A way too long video about a way too long game that gets way too personal by the end. A video that says everything I've ever wanted to say about Metal Gear Solid 4 for the past ten years so I never have to talk about this game again.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is deeply impressive, beautifully personal, and there is nothing like it in this medium.
seriously though fuck this game

if they let us save the B&B units, and let snake or rose rehabilitate them that would be interesting. Having them killed off makes them as forgettable as the FROGS.
It would have been difficult to implement with any depth, since you can kill or save each B&B as they appear. If devs wanted them to have a conversation with the player or with each other, to talk and interact with other characters during cutscenes, or to appear at different points in the game to assist you, there are potentially 14 combinations or more depending on how a developer writes them (e.g 'nanomachines turn their mind into a single unit').
e.g if x = a B&B you killed, and 1,2,3,4 are each member of the B&B Unit, then combos look like:

Watching a man who fought and sacrificed everything for his country gradually withering away, but getting meaningful conversations and nostalgic memories to wash down the bitter pill that is loss. Its upsetting and unpleasant, but that's how final goodbyes are. It's beautiful but heart wrenching. Idk. That scene (you know which one, BANG) will never be the same in my eyes again. I used to think it was hilarious and baffling, mostly stupid, with the highlight of unironic cool being Ocelot.
Now, Eva protecting Solidus and Snake getting burned protecting her, and that entire final 45 second or so stretch of cuts and shots at the end are the most incredible, epic shit I've ever seen.
The music really kind of highlights Kojima's love for cinematic setpieces that ramp up in tension and end in a feverish climax (also see the scene of Sam and Igor's disastrous and terrifying corpse disposal gig, early in Death Stranding, which I would actually say is one of Kojima's most well-directed and artistically unique scenes he's ever done. I also haven't finished DS yet so no spoilers pls)
And why not? They’re GREAT AMVs that sell the scenes they’re put over extremely well.

He has a monkey, a coin, a catchphrase and does magic tricks. Of course Kojima would keep him around for the entire game

Lo and behold, he's there selling autographed Drebin photos and I just had to ask him what the hell was up with the B&B Corps backstory part in the script. From his perspective the script reading and acting was really well done and he was enthusiastic about what he was saying and referencing. Then...Laughing Octopus' lines appeared. And midway through a take, he stops and asks "What the hell is this? What am I reading? This a joke?" Nope. Was straight from Kojima himself. "How the hell does this character suddenly know this? Why does he know this? Why is this important to the player?" He was told yet again, from Kojima himself. Read the lines and ignore it. Did his job wonderfully, but years later at that con, the baffled look on his face sticks with me whenever I play, or watch reviews of MGS4.

that makes the situation even funnier. even as a kid I had no idea why suddenly I (or Snake to be exact) needed a background exposition on the boss I just killed. every other game in the franchise knew how to naturally insert characters backstory (especially if you're on the "bad" side), so knowing the VA himself couldn't take this seriously is beyond funny.
ps his monkey and raiden share the same mo cap actor, and that's a backstory I would rather like know than any of the B&B's
Sometimes actors don't know what they're getting into as Peter Weller is still baffled by Buckaroo Banzai. As for Payton, I'd have enjoyed hearing about his time on Deus Ex.
Khary Payton is a champ va. Honestly that may be the reason a part of me kinda liked Drebbib

I’ve never played Metal Gear, but you’ve made me feel like I grew up alongside each character, then you stabbed them to death and pointed out how bad it all was, but also how it shouldn’t work, but does work, and I can’t tell what to think about the game, but I’ve been filled with new vigor to work on my art.
Because if a game this big, this bad, and this hated can be simultaneously awesome and loved, maybe I have a chance out there.
Exact same thing with me
Metal gear is just such a fundamentally brilliant series that even when it’s bad, it’s still kinda camp.
Same, I've just finished this video and watching it over the weekend has really pumped me up creatively again out of a confidence slump. Seeing an artist or creative, especially one like Kojima, take such big swings and have so many ideas over half a dozen works created over a decade is just inspiring. Even if they don't all land, looking over the Metal Gear series always makes me feel a sense of wow.
I haven't read your commet, but I completely agree with everything you said

If Naomi went into this mission KNOWING she would be destroying the only thing keeping her alive and went through with it anyway for the greater good of the world and the next generation, and the kind of thematic moral sacrifice that would represent in tandem with the original ending where snake dies? Or even if turning off the nano machines was somehow the thing that killed the dangerous foxdie in Snake so that Naomi’s sacrifice ALSO saved Snake’s life along with the lives and freedom and personal identities of everyone else?

You mentioning your perspective on the ending changing with your friend taking their own life really resonated with me, I had my perspective on it change as I grew older too. I played this game when I was a kid, and as a kid I always thought it should have ended with Snake killing himself, and I felt the fake out with Big Boss coming in to explain everything ruined the tone on an ending I overall enjoyed. Shortly after I graduated college my dad died and I essentially was thrown into adulthood without him to help me figure things out. Over the years I feel like I found my way and being a few years into a graduate program, I can't help but think about how I still don't know what I need to be doing and longing for him to be here just for reassurance.
My relationship with my dad was complicated, we loved each other but as is in your early adulthood you argue about stuff that really doesn't matter, but you take it personally because you just don't have the same perspective as each other. Replaying this game and well, watching this video again (I know I'm not the only one who watches this at least once a year) I thought about what Kojima said in that interview, and how all Big Boss is doing is just really coming in and telling Snake how things are going to be okay. Hearing you go over Kojima's interview about losing his father at a young age, and how the ending is exactly that, just him having his dad tell him that he respects him as a man, just made me kind of go "Yeah, I get it".
Anyways, great video, it's definitely one of the best on the platform

good video, and I'm a little displeased your sentiments toward 4 aren't so common. I basically feel the same way about the whole thing: there are awful parts and amazing parts and the ending, while messy, "felt" right in the right ways. Even if you DON'T know the metatextual details like Big Boss's Japanese VA here being Solid's VA's father, or Kojima's personal motivations, you can feel them nonetheless and it resonates. I also really love how the game actually ends: the conversation between Snake and Otacon. It's just nice. I consider 4 to still be the end of the series. V and others are like supplements, 4 is the completion
The convo between Snake and Big Boss is fine in isolation (meaning ignore most of the whole plot with retcons and Zero being there since he was kinda silly there and was transparently just forcing him in to tie up loose ends) and the plot would've been much more solid if they designed the whole plot about the two's history and emnity and final "reconciliation" (though frankly I'd suggest having Big Boss just be strapped in somewhere with what Snake speaks to an AI ala the Patriot Campbell that manages to take in enough of Big Boss' personality combined with Snake himself figuring stuff out rather than just Big Boss yapping on). With Raiden absent, Liquid Ocelot's final fight actually using Ocelot's skillset rather than the fanservice wannabe fighting game and more importantly Ocelot's ends strictly serving Big Boss l/Big Boss AI through serving the Patriots (which let's Ocelot keep to his characterization in MGS1-MGS3 of being a Patriot agent while still making Big Boss important in his ends) while "Liquid" is just trying to burn it all down.
1:20:34 Watching this scene again (for like the fourth time since I love this video), I think the apple that guy drops is actually the one Snake receives from monkey in Act 2 at 30:00, as said apple appears to fall from behind the guy Snake is holding. This makes it even stupider, that not only would Snake have kept that apple in his kevlar vest that absolutely does not have pockets big enough for an apple, but that he would pack it for this completely different mission into an urban area, and only now at the church would it fall out of his apple pocket.
Kojima is stupid as hell but I am excited for Death Stranding 2.
It was a gift why wouldn’t he take it
The apple might be a lame reference to Adam and Eve. Also , good point, the apple probably belongs to Snake.😊
MGS2: "Gets called a fanfic by a translator"
also MGS2: *has a very accurate prediction of the future*
Kojima has vision, he just lacks in decisive and consistent direction.
that's quite true, the first MGS already does retcons, to the prequel series Metal Gear
I think the translator was criticizing his writing and narrative elements, not the story ideas themselves.

No I hate that part. It's a good video, but I hate the music he uses.
Snake: "Raiden what're you doing? What happened to you?"
Raiden: "Your mom lol"
*_(Cue Snake Eater fanfare)_*
Underrated comment
Too true.
*rules of nature starts playing in the background*
There's a beautiful symmetry between Raiden in Rising and Gray Fox. I know it's tragic to see a character whose been through as much as Raiden turn back to violence. But Gray Fox's words sum up his motivation "Fighting was the only thing I was good at. But at least I faught for what I believed in."
That's exactly Raiden in Rising. He's fighting for a better future so children don't have to go through the same thing as him.
And the best part is he succeeds, arguably he deals an even bigger blow to the military industrial complex than even Solid Snake when he erased the patriots.
He also manages to use the wisdom Snake imparted onto him to simply not just throw his life away, he is putting his life on the line in combat, but now he does it knowing he has a home and a family to go back to, and that is just delicious.
@@Roler42 I mean no, a bigger blow to the private military industry complex than destroying the patriots is to abolish PMC’s as a whole.
@@Roler42
This is also something unique to him as a _Metal Gear_ protagonist; Raiden is the only protagonist that has a family and home he can reliably go to and be safe and at peace, something not even Solid Snake offered himself as he continued to travel the world to stop Metal Gears with Otacon and eventually Sunny. Despite embracing his violent past and partaking in brutal military combat, he’s finally at peace with himself and the world that made him.
And in some ways raiden succeeds where gray fox fails....

@@hishkapish4817 they seem like they have a decent relationship, but obviously they can't be together for a while and Raiden has no qualms with flirting with Courtney (which I really can't blame him for, especially after all the crap he went through because of Rose)
Love seeing the recent comments. Love this video.
But was Raiden that innocent? I mean, you blame Rose but her actions were justifiable. It was his decision at the first place to drown his sorrow, and pain in alcohol instead of taking therapy and fight with his past like a man.
@@TheKrowkaBoo he's obviously not, but between him and Rose, Raiden is ultimately the victim, and the whole "fake marriage, fake miscarriage" thing wasn't the first time Rose fucked him over, considering she entered his life at all with the intent to spy on him for the Patriots

The most lasting effect this game has had on my life is that I sometimes text my brother “Oh wait! We’re on PS3™ System!” in response to questions he asks me, which is something I can’t really say about MGS 1-3 I guess 🤷♂️
Lmfao
That is hilarious. 🤣
I wanted to let you know that this is, in all honnesty, my favourite video on UA-cam.
I've seen it for the first time about 2 years ago. When I was in a very depressive state, under medication and all.. Nothing out of the ordinary but my own personnal struggle.
And eventhough the video was 3 hours long I couldn't help but keep watching it to the end. Because your video managed to talk about a video game franchise that I've experienced myself, in a way that helped me dive back into the memories of it all.
In about 3 hours I could remember the whole game and how it made me feel, meanwhile your essay brought up so many interesting new things to the table for me !
I don't know how to describe it, but the pacing of the video really catch me and I can't help but watch it entirely everytime. Because yeah, I guess I've seen it 4 times in the last 2 years. Which is very weird and could be considered a waste of time, but since the video's so long, it helps with grasping all of what is said into it. And to me, what is said matters.
The pacing isn't the only thing here, the humour is there, and the selection of songs used, as well as the Protomen parts. I just think you worked a lot to make this and it feels so good to be entertained by it.
And not only entertained, because as I mentionned, the essay has some very insightful things too, regarding the game's story, but also the game design, and also our own relationship to it as players.
And the fact that this video seems to be quite personnal for you, makes it quite touching as well.
It's.. It made me feel a lot of things, back when I first saw it. And everytime I've been watching it again since then.
It makes me remember why I loved these games, why I love to still be around, why I love that people get to share their interests the way you did.
And to me, these 3 hours of videos, they're very important. The fact that I can take 3 hours of my life to enjoy this, and feel grateful like that at the end of it.
It makes a lot of the struggles in my life worth it.
So yeah, thank you, and I wish you the best !
I recently moved across the country and I listened to this between stops. Now I drive a lot for my job and on longer trips I listen to this, I love all the information and narration from papa steak.

@@akapotatobrad This is a 3 year old video
Ah scene selection. The good ol days
You are a hero
What do I have to do to get a lil vid for mgs5?
Steak?
Steak!?
Steak!!!!
Nothing, my dude, that game was actually trashy fun and not up its own ass, murdering its own narrative. Fans of the series will boast about how the series made daring changes between iterations, but then when they find themselves perturbed at one of those 'daring changes' it's suddenly a bridge too far and Metal Gear is NO LONGER best when it's actively trying to not be Metal Gear. I find it so difficult to take the "NOT MY METAL GEAR!" crowd seriously. They're right though - it's not theirs and it never was, it's understandable they'd be upset at finally realizing it. Steak is good for all types of bribing though. That's why we don't use it as currency.
@@fuzzydunlop7928 yeah, that game is amazing, it's flawed, but few games can boast having me hooked for over 300 hours or trying to have every single achievement, there are some bullshit missions but in general is a very enjoyable experience.
@@javierortiz82 )ĥ
@@javierortiz82 sadly the episode 2 with all those replay of mission was so shity and not memorable. But the recon was amazing.
@@santeixeira9301 yeah, I'm 10 s ranks away from the last two achievements and oh boy it can get tedious, specially when you didn't complete the "listen to the 4 conversations" objectives.
This is hands down one of the greatest UA-cam videos ever made. Very good job man! 👏 I know this took a lot of work.
Agree 100%.
I've watched this video about 4 times now yet, it never gets old..
"Rose lied about a miscarriage"
Her voice actor also voiced the girl from the Loss meme. Let that sink in.
I wanna see the loss meme with Raiden and Rose now
@@TheShadowOfHumanity Quinton Flynn wouldn't be a bad voice match for the guy who voiced Ethan, now that you mention it.
Jessica Wachsman voiced rose?
@@aubreyskipper9642Nope, but Lara Cody voiced Lilah in later episodes. I think those were produced after MGS4, but before Loss, but don't quote me on that.
what does it want now?
