He was the only clay court player I would watch during that era that typically had long (boring) moonballing rallies on the dirt. Amazingly aggressive game using sharp angles, going at the lines for winners and lots of trips to net to finish off points. And of course that wonderful lively, free spirited temperament. There will always only be one Guga!
Guga was one of my favorite players to watch, too bad his career was cut short from injuries. When people talk about equipment changing the game they usually talk about racquets but Lux Big Banger probably had the biggest impact on how tennis is now played. If you have one, you should have worn the Vollaix Brazil shirt in this video....would have been kinda cool.
One of the few players to beat Sampras and Agassi in the same tournament at the 2000 Masters World championships for # 1 player in the World ! Purple Luxiilon !
Tennisnerd, I’m a Brazilian, tennis player and coach and a big guga fan. Really nice video and definitely made me more and more interested in improve my game to try one day to play with a guga racquet 🎾
Guga ganó su último Roland Garros con la i.Prestige Intelligence, pero no la mencionaste en el video. Es una de mis raquetas favoritas de la vida. Saludos.
Loved Guga’s game!!!! I played a Pro tour back in the 90’s so I just got myself the new 2.0 just to feel like being back in the old days. It’s won’t be my main racket but it’s just fun to play one of these ol’school rackets again
Nice vid. Who doesn't love Guga? I have a memory of him using something with a crossbar during Head's Titanium days. Like a Ti Fire? Don't know how they would have paintjobbed his PT630 with a cross bar!
He already said that he had problems with the bar and in a match that he was angry, he throw the racquet in the ground and the bar broke. He suddenly feel the racquet was better, so he and his coach broken the bar in all his racquets until Head return new ones without the bar

@@hugoyamamura5654 Im brazilian and checked your link. He played with the new racket and smash it on the court and prefered it after break. Them he and his coach Larry tried to break the others one in the same place for the others tournaments. But when going to Europe he made a risk move and decided to bring with him the only 2 old model rackets he still had and he was runner up in Rome and champion in Hamburg using just 2 rackets. When he arrived in Rolland Garros Head sent him 6 sticks of his old model just painted like the new one. He trained with just 2 of them and played with these 2 the whole tournament to be the champion. In his words he "liked them with a bit of use" and if he had to use one of the other 4 he didn't trained with he would be "a lil worried" . Thats the history. All in 2000 season.
I remember seeing the Luxilon logo on the strings of a lot of Spanish claycourtes starting in 1995-ish. He made a big splash at the RR but there were lots more players using the same Luxilon strings as Guga. I guess when you win a grand slam people are going to scrutinize your equipment which why maybe Luxilon became more mainstream after his 1997 win, since even Agassi started using Luxilon strings a couple of years later
Alberto Berasategui used Poly Star strings going back to the early nineties '91'92. Poly strings were indeed around and used by pro players way before Guga came to the scene.
Yeah, I seem to recall a story that he bought the mold after it was discontinued. I think he started off with a Puma (which was made by Kneissl) and than used an Estusa. But they were basically the same racquet with a paintjob.
Dam! I was buying the Premiere Tour, thinking that was what he was using. I saw him using different "cosmetic" racquets, but was certain that it was still the Premier that he was using to win Rome, Monte Carlo, Roland Garros...
I wouldnt mind seeing one of these about James Blake, Mardy Fish, or Lleyton Hewitt. Im pretty sure Hewitt would be the easiest of the 3 because he didnt change brands and likely didnt change frames the majority of his career. James I believe played with Dunlop Wilson and Prince during his career and Mardy was with Wilson, Dunlop, and Slazenger.

I'm a huge guga fan, here in Brazil he is a legend, staying right next to Senna and Pelé. Thank you for this video!
SENNNAAAA
He could’ve been so much better and could’ve won many more grand slams if not for those injuries.

Love the way whenever PT57A is mentioned, Tennisnerd mentions every player who uses it👏

He never changed his racquet. It was paintjobbed
He used the ti fire that has a bridge above the throat..@@eltonalonsopompeu615
finally tennis nerd dedicated a topic to this amazing player!!!

do Beckers racket please :)

Becker bought 200 frames of the Puma racquet before they went out of the tennis business.
Legend!!!
Let's dew it!!! Oh wait, wrong Guga.

Any info on whether he had silicone in his handle? When were silicone filled handles first used?

You should review the racquet of jo wilfried Tsonga, the pure aero plus!!!

guga vs nadal
mustve been a lot of lead at the top of the racquet for him to have that balance point
Diego Schwartzman next!
How many French opens would Nadal have won if Guga had remained healthy??
