It's time for the final game of the Phoenix Wright Trilogy. I streamed this last week, and we're going to be streaming from where this video ends TOMORROW starting at 3pm GMT+1. You can catch it live here www.twitch.tv/rtgame and watch my entire Phoenix Wright series so far here ua-cam.com/video/5tUoqIcvG34/v-deo.html
The reference to the Harlem Shake was not actually a reference to the meme, but to the original dance. What makes this especially fun is that, by pure coincidence, the meme happened in the same year as the case takes place. So the localisers weren't referencing the meme, but Grossberg could have been.
Every time I see Godot’s “I’ve never lost a case” line followed with him saying he hasn’t done a case, I just think of a giga chad meme with his visor on giga chad
The most notable part of the first case wasn't that Phoenix was on trial for murder (again), or that we defended him as Mia, or even learning how Payne lost his hair. It's how Grossberg just WOULDN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT HIS ASS. IT NEVER S T O P S ..
I thought it was that Phoenix ate a glass bottle and didn't have surgery the first time I played it. However, in Apollo Justice, we do learn he is 90% invincible since (slight spoiler) he got ran over by a car, launched into a pole, and only broke his ankle.
I dunno, I think it's a pretty spectacular twist that the main character was a ghost the whole time, what with him chewing up and eating a literal bottle of poison in his origin story.
I think my favorite thing about Dan's playthrough is how quickly he shifts between being really super into the case and then zooming way out and just being like "This court is an absolute joke"
to be fair ace attorney as a series really is just a constant pendulum swing between charming character designs/good storytelling and just the most ridiculous out of left field bitch slap of an immersion break with one dialogue box😂and its just that on repeat for like 7 games and its great
Idk if this was mentioned in the video (haven’t finished it yet), but people in Twitch Chat were so disturbed at Desiree’s voice that about 1,500 people just straight up left the stream when it happened. We never got the viewer count back to normal. Edit: I forgot to mention this but also- a TON of people were spamming chat with the lesbian emote during (and even before) Dessie’s intro. The emotes also stopped abruptly once her accent kicked in
RT’s accent for Desirée sounds like an Irishman trying to do a Scottish accent, but that Scottish accent is also trying to do an Irish accent. It’s beautiful
I still love how the reason Godot half asses the trial is because he already knows about the murder and so lets phoenix supply both a motive and the opportunity for Ron to commit the crime so he can use it against him in the much more serious charge, and now phoenix has to face the guilt of being the reason Ron is accused of the crime. Devilishy clever, Godot.
It also shows how well vile Godot is. He is willing to send a man he probably knew was innocent into a murder trial while letting the real killer escape. It really shows how pathetic Godot is as he said himself, which makes this episode better in introspection, he doesn’t care about Mia’s legacy nor what she or he stood for. He lost her and his life as he knew it and couldn’t move on so he wants to drag everyone he can reach back so that he isn’t alone. He either thought don was wright or let don make a mockery of the court as well. Godot is one of those sympathetic villains who are really despicable deep down.
It really is a brilliant way to keep Godot from immediately losing all of his presence. An important part of being an antagonist is being able to be a credible threat to the protagonist. Without that no one can really be invested in their dynamic and battles. At first, we're introduced to Godot as a legendary prosecutor who has earned even the respect of our main rival, on top of that is his odd name, which mentally seperates him from every other previous antagonist, all of whom have been, for lack of a better word, normal people with full names. Then we finally meet him face to face, and he sports an intimidating design, a killer voice, a character quirk that, while amusing, isn't nearly as extreme or unserious as some of the other characters, and a mysterious character on top of all that. Except, small problem, he's never been in a case before, and it should be hard to take him seriously because of that. After all, that basically puts him on the same level as Winston Payne in our heads. The twist with him having known about the murder all along, basically means he was just playing along with Luke, Ron and you the whole time, which establishes him back as a credible threat in our eyes. It's a genius bit of writing.
@@archivist_13 I'm of the firm belief that Godot is one of the best-written characters in fiction, and that's because he has a presence that no other prosecutor has- a presence of superiority. Phoenix is scared of Manfred, and for good reason- he has the courts under his thumb- but Manfred's flaunting of this isn't because he cares about Phoenix. Godot, however, wants to ruin Phoenix, and thus he doesn't need fancy tricks or loud declarations to make the player squirm. He is playing the long game, in a way no other prosecutor is- He doesn't actually care about individual cases, he cares about making Wright look like an idiot, putting him in situations where he is *forced* to make bad decisions. It's why, while Edgeworth will dissect both Wright and the Witness to find the truth, and Franziska will carefully pick apart EVERYTHING to find a single flaw within her "perfect" case, Godot will go CONSISTENTLY on the offensive, constantly peppering him with insults and demoralizations. Godot is not here to find the truth. He's barely there to win. Godot is there to make Wright suffer, and that makes his slow change genuinely beautiful. Because without Wright's help, Godot was suffering to a degree he could never make Wright suffer.
Here's a recap in case you missed something: There's Grossberg, who feels pain in his ass There's Phoenix, consumer of glass And there's the great thief, Mask *_STAR_* DeMasque And that's everything you need to know
fun fact: the english translation of that line is the same as it was in the original DS release. The DS release in question was from 5 years BEFORE the harlem shake meme. The line RETROACTIVELY became dated.
@@misirtere9836 Whats better is that the game canonically takes place in 2013 or 2014, which is when the meme became a thing. They managed to retroactively date the line to the year in the (at the time) future it was meant to represent.
Okay, hear me out. The judge is an immortal being. In the flashback five years ago, he looks exactly the same, acts the same, and has the same position. Then at 1:29:11 the judge says two of the most glorious sentences I have ever seen conjoined: "Bailiff! Get my steed!" Now this is absolute nonsense. The judge views himself as a keeper of order who doesn't put up with Phoenix's nonsense. This is clearly not a joke, but it also makes absolutely no sense: Under what circumstances would he have a steed that the bailiff could fetch him? I am firmly convinced that the judge is a human who was cursed a thousand years ago to live forever. And humans were not made to live forever, so after about two or three hundred years, his mind is completely decrepit, and he is suffering from every kind of old age mental instability that a human possibly could, but he just can't die. This would explain his effective stupidity, his timeless appearance, and this absolutely inane line. His beleaguered mind is mixing up the past with the present. He likely obtained his eternal job as judge because people thought that an immortal being would be extremely wise and therefore very qualified for the position, and now he has tenure.
Honestly if the only paranormal thing in the entire series was this, I would have no problems with it "he has no beginning and as far as we can tell no end, we just call him judge" although it would be quite different without the other paranormal things tied to spirit channeling and whatnot
OBJECTION: the trilogy takes place in Japan in the original release and thus it can be assumed that he is a descendant of the Japanese judge in TGAAC (I can't remember his name) who we know to be a different person due to spoilers proving that he isn't eternal. (PS: I understand that it is a jokes so don't try to woosh me.)
As someone who knows this game and like 90% of the lore, watching RT question the “Feenie” jumper, and Pheonix’s career, and immediately going “well it can’t be this lot so it’s clearly her” gives me SO MUCH serotonin.
reminds me when egdeworth said "it's over, senator Alba, I am the Ace Attorney Investigations Miles Edgeworth!" and spent about 3 more hours trying to beat him.
@@Viscidsquare040 as someone who personally loves doing bad impressions, having a go-to warm up line that you can always hear in the character's voice in your head can be very useful but... it can get silly if you're as bad at impressions as Dan...
"Has Mr. Payne ever won a case in his life?" Fun fact: if his comments in the 4th game are true; he was undefeated for 7 years making him the prosecutor with the 2nd longest win streak (that we know about) in the Ace Attorney series.
@@YasEmisDaBus Just goes to show that win record isn't an accurate representation of prosecution prowess (at least in the AA universe). There are a whole host of better prosecutors in the games that don't have as good a win record... because of Phoenix Wright 😆
I like how he said that "Phoenix Wright is canonically a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!" as a joke, not realizing that in the Capcom Vs. Marvel games, Phoenix Wright does indeed appear, meaning he IS actually a part of the MCU. But imagine being him in that scenario. You're walking next to people who shift mountains by punching, world-class fighters, people who control the wind, sun, and sky, robot kids who create black holes to thwart a mad scientist, the ACTUAL mad scientist who give those universe obliterating robots a run for their money... And you're just a guy.
And yet Phoenix Wright can still hold his own with those people-with his attorney’s badge on his lapel, Maya by his side, and the power of bluffing, there’s no stopping this lawyer ‘til he gets the (W)right verdict!
43:17 When I play these games, I like to imagine that the judge notices Maya channeling Mia, but he doesn't say anything because he's scared that everyone will just think he's going senile. Also, don't you just love it when you get the first trial that isn't a murder, it's a theft, but it's actually not a theft, it's a murder? How novel!
I mean with some of this judge's "PRETTY GIRL, MUST COMMENT" tendencies, you might thought it'd have come up at least once. And that he'd have mentioned the transformation.
I think in the show he does comment on the channeling one time but Mia shuts him down with a “that’s your imagination acting up” so he’s too embarrassed to bring it up again

6:21 Mia is rightfully shocked here. She would have sat in on some court cases during her training, and that would lead to the natural conclusion that prosecutors and lawyers can claim whatever they want as long as they're aggressive enough towards the judge. Well perhaps now we may understand why Grossburg was at the boat house. Yogi was selling him medication for his piles, all medicine fresh from the chemical factory as well.
This is actually when Payne is at his most competent. Back before Mia absolutely destroyed him, he was known as the 'Rookie Killer'. Then Mia beat him and he lost his nerve. Can’t wait for the reveal that’ll happen in the next part~
48:35 Actually, that’s very likely! Hamburger and Spaghetti are both words with their own japanese spellings. The spelling of the word hamburger uses the japanese character “ba,” and the word spaghetti uses the japanese character “pa.” These characters are very similar. In fact, they’re really the same character, just with different accents.
Apparently, the decision to make so much of Grossburg’s dialogue about his hemorrhoids was a sort of last-minute decision on the part of the devs. I’m not sure if this was a character trait ported over from the original Japanese version, but I know for sure that the English version’s reference to the Harlem Shake was NOT an attempt at referencing pop culture. The original version of this game, the third in the original trilogy released in 2004. Nine years before the hit song of the same name.

Former Theatre major and avid Ace Attorney enjoyer here to settle the debate on the pronunciation of Godot! (and also to infodump about him cause i really love his character lmao) *There is a TL:DR at the end Godot’s name is in fact inspired by the play “Waiting for Godot” (that’s why there are a few references), and the playwright stated that it is pronounced GOD-oh. However, it is pronounced go-DOH in the English dub of the Ace Attorney anime (as that is how many people pronounce it in the US) and the Judge implies that it is pronounced that way by mispronouncing his name as “Gobo” in the second case. There is more evidence that it is pronounced this way, but it is HUGE spoilers, so I’ll include it at the very very end tagged with ⚠️ (i’m really just including it bc i think it’s neat lol). So, you can pronounce it either way. People will argue about how it’s pronounced but really both are correct, like how people debate over the pronunciation of “caramel” or “pecan”. In conclusion, say whatever you want motherfucker. (i also recommend looking up Godot’s development on the AA Wiki because his designer, Tatsuro Iwamoto, included so many interesting things that are so clever in hindsight. however there are obviously huge major ultra mega spoilers there, so please check it out AFTER the playthrough!) *TL:DR - You can pronounce it either way lol (also don’t come for me i just like talking about funny coffee drinking man) ⚠️⚠️⚠️SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE GAME (Paraphrased from the AA Wiki) Godot’s full/former name, Diego Armando, was likely chosen by the designers as a reference to his alias, as it is a portmanteau of the last syllables of Die*go* Arman*do*. Put together it spells “Go-do”, implying that it it pronounced “go-DOH” (also, if you really want to be ~deep~ about it, you could probably speculate that this is how he came up with his alias). ⚠️⚠️⚠️

Perfect timing! Literally this morning I was thinking about how much I wanted more RT plays Phoenix Wright and here we are
haha i was thinking about it like two hours ago
I ended the last one he posted yesterday so same xd
I finished playing this game exactly today!
I am literally so excited to see him play the last case, which is in my opinion, the absolute best one.
Best in the series, second to none.
Yeah, one of the best cases in the whole series, can't wait to see him play it

I swear RT is getting scarily accurate at guessing who the real culprit is
to be fair, Atmey is considered one of the most obvious murderers in the series.
Its super easy to tell since a lot of these guys are overly suspicious... and Dan is not the kind of player that rules out anyone it seems... so unless the killer hasn't been introduced, he'll probably know who it is
There’s no way he’ll guess the killer for the 3rd case though. Probably the biggest surprise in the whole trilogy
If you ever played the games, you kinda just get like this after the first game. There's only so many people involved, and figuring which one had enough motive becomes pretty easy. The hard part is not presenting the evidence 3 steps ahead of the game tbh.
I mean, Atmey is absurdly obvious. He's basically a Saturday morning cartoon villain, and we love him for it.
I love how Payne's "Objection!" voice clip is higher-pitched than Mia's (and Franziska's, I'm pretty sure)
54:23 I love the fact RT's voice for Atmey after seeing him is quite similar in tone to Ian Sinclair's from the AA anime, just goes to show how well the voice fits the persona
I cannot describe the amount of joy I felt when I saw this video. Ace Attorney is one of my favourite series from RT, and it coming back makes me so happy! Thanks RT!!
HELL YEAH, IM SO SO SO SO HAPPY THIS SERIES IS BACK

I love that RT is like "That's the killer" within the first 10 minutes of both cases, and he's fucking right (sorta).
6:35 - 6:50 Honestly, pronouncing Dahlia as da-LYa makes a lot more sense with Ace Attorney's meaningful naming. I think that might have actually been the intended pronunciation.

I like how in the Phoenix Wright universe, the prosecutor can apparently force the defence to cross-examine their own witness. I know it's not the most absurd legal nonsense in this game, but that one is still funny to me.
Who doesn't look at Dahlia in the court record and just go "murderer"
Former Theatre major and avid Ace Attorney enjoyer here to settle the debate on the pronunciation of Godot! (and also to infodump about him cause i really love his character lmao)
*There is a TL:DR at the end
Godot’s name is in fact inspired by the play “Waiting for Godot” (that’s why there are a few references), and the playwright stated that it is pronounced GOD-oh.
(i also recommend looking up Godot’s development on the AA Wiki because his designer, Tatsuro Iwamoto, included so many interesting things that are so clever in hindsight. however there are obviously huge major ultra mega spoilers there, so please check it out AFTER the playthrough!)
*TL:DR - You can pronounce it either way lol (also don’t come for me i just like talking about funny coffee drinking man)
⚠️⚠️⚠️SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE GAME
(Paraphrased from the AA Wiki) Godot’s full/former name, Diego Armando, was likely chosen by the designers as a reference to his alias, as it is a portmanteau of the last syllables of Die*go* Arman*do*. Put together it spells “Go-do”, implying that it it pronounced “go-DOH” (also, if you really want to be ~deep~ about it, you could probably speculate that this is how he came up with his alias). ⚠️⚠️⚠️
Always remember kids, if there’s ever a case about a phantom thief involving an ace detective, the ace detective is automatically the culprit.
