      They're both great pedals. EHX makes great _and_ affordable drive pedals. My EHX Hot Wax is my go to, for guitar AND bass. It's EHX Crayon circuit first, then the Hot Tubes circuit after, and the two together - the Hot Tubes is my favourite of the two. Another great cheap drive pedal is the TC Electronic Cinders, a Blues Driver type pedal with a tone that punches 2-3x above it's weight. Ok, maybe the build quality on these isn't quiet up there with £200 drive pedals, but they do sound all that; and the build is decent enough. Caline Blue Sky too, sounds great, again a bit of noise and not _amazing_ build quality, but for a little over £30 ... and the noise cleans up well running it off rechargeable battery

    I’m with you on this one man! It sounds great. I’ve been wanting to get this pedal for a while. I love the way it compresses the sound. It’s supposed to replicate a cranked Marshall but it reminds me a little of the overdriven desk sound of recordings like Black Dog or Revolution.

    Nice! It’s fair to say you rather enjoyed that! As ErebosGR said, there are touches of OCD, but dialled back overtones of a Timmy or Hotcake. The quest for the perfect drive is never ending (I have too many..), but man, that sounds good and very versatile. When EHX get it right, they get it right. Tempting…

      @@AlexisGuitars it’s an amazing amp. long story short, but I had my car serviced on the drive. my Marshall was in the boot, the mechanic an older guy said he used to play round Liverpool in the 60s and had an ac30 in the loft, been up there almost 30 years, might not even work did I want it. I kind of laughed and said he should sell it. 2 weeks later there’s a knock at the door and I was handed a vintage ac30! Wouldn’t take a penny for it.

    Sounds a bit harsh and raspy in this demo, but I assure y’all, this is a sweet drive that will do everything from low gain crunch to saturated high gain, and it just eats up a boost. You could play an entire gig with a Tube Screamer and the OD Glove. It’s a killer dirt pedal, don’t let the price fool you.

  • @ErebosGR
    @ErebosGR 2 роки тому +2

    Oh yeah, it sounds awesome, very amp-like.
    IIRC it's almost a clone of the Fulltone OCD v3 but with switchable internal voltage (9-18V).
    The Harley Benton (Joyo) Ultimate Drive is also an OCD clone but of v4 which people didn't like as much.
    And as with other pedals that can be run at 18V, the higher voltage means more volume output, more headroom, less compression.

    • @AlexisGuitars
      @AlexisGuitars  2 роки тому

      Yes it absolutely reminds me of an OCD in tone and features. I've tried a few OCD clones (HB included) and this is the closest at about half the price! I have a review of the HB Ultimate Drive on the channel. I like the Ultimate drive, but I don't hear the OCD-ness in it - it's just a fun pedal in its own right.

    • @ErebosGR
      @ErebosGR 2 роки тому

      @@AlexisGuitars Well, there are 2 versions of the Ultimate Drive. I don't know which is which but they're based on the v4 (which has an added germanium diode along the MOSFETs) with a few component values altered, so they're not exact clones.
      The v4 does sound very different from the previous OCD iterations (that's why a lot of people didn't like it), so maybe you were used to the older ones?
      ToneStart has an article on the differences between the 4 versions.

    • @ErebosGR
      @ErebosGR 2 роки тому

      @@AlexisGuitars I found a great article on MusicRadar that explains the differences between the clones better. Apart from a few different component values, the Ultimate Drive also had originally the germanium diode soldered in reverse (probably by mistake) which made it sound ever more different than the OCD. Maybe that's what you have. They corrected it in a later revision.

    • @AlexisGuitars
      @AlexisGuitars  2 роки тому +1

      Could well be, although my ocd is a v1.6, so I could be comparing the ultimate drive to the "wrong" ocd haha. I do like the ultimate drive especially at low-mid gain, it just seems to saturate and thicken up more than the ocd at higher gain (from memory)

    Did you have the chance to compare the ehx hot tubes?

    • @AlexisGuitars
      @AlexisGuitars  2 місяці тому +1

      Hi mate, I normally use the crayon on its own actually. If I'd use it as a boost, it would be before the glove, though, as I prefer tone shaping low gain pedals before the main gain pedal (which for me would be the glove in this case). I don't have a hot tubes unfortunately, and I don't have time at the moment for new videos, but I'm hoping to get back into it again...at some stage! Thanks for watching!

    For the price it sounds good…it sounds like my Dirty Little Secret pedal which is a Marshall Super Lead sound, and a switch to be a Hendrix Super Bass tone…but this pedal is $120 less, simplified to less knobs(no full band eq) and just plug n play.
