Here is my list of recommended things to purchase if you are just getting started flying. Regardless of where you learn to fly, it is good to have these on hand. The FAA manuals can be downloaded for free but I still prefer to have a printed copy. In addition to the FAA material, I recommend you check out the below items from Aviation Ally. Their training aids break down complex topics into easy-to-understand language, making aviation accessible to all. I have personally used all of these materials and believe they can help you.

Did it go well? What I do after each one is ask, 'what went well?', 'What could be improved?' & 'What will I do differently next time?' only a sentence or two for each answer. But I review my notes before the next lesson. My 'best' one has been 'What will I do differently next time?: Perhaps try latching the door before taxi-ing'

Alright post Discovery Flight. Even though the instructor did the pre-flight inspection, I asked him if he would show me how to check the fuel and oil and where they’re located because I wanted to know. He was happy to do that. When we first plugged in our headsets I could hear him just fine. However, after we started the engine, I couldn’t hardly hear or understand anything he was saying. Mistake on my part not speaking up soon enough to let him know I couldn’t hear him. I did ok on my taxing out but definitely felt I kept over correcting the left tendency and the nose would pull hard to the right. He also let me do the the take off, but since I couldn’t hear the verbal instructions he was giving me, it was a bit messy sadly. I think I pulled the nose up too soon. But we got up and just like you said, it was surreal looking down. I finally told him I was having a hard time hearing him and he adjusted the volume then it was a world of clarity from then on. I did so good on my simple bank turns, that he let me do some steep bank turns. He also had me do 4 forward slip maneuvers. Those were my favorite part! I almost couldn’t stop smiling and saying “wow”. I felt so happy and proud of myself. Then he showed me the positive and negative G forces pretty quickly in the roller coaster fashion. Sad to say, it made me vom in my mouth and I just swallowed and choked it back down. After coughing for a few seconds, he told me to open the window. I felt totally good to go again and was right back to making more turns and slips without a problem. We were at a small uncontrolled airport. He set up the approach for the final and he let me do the landing. Another smashing rush of adrenaline that I couldn’t believe was real. Second mistake, I forgot to let go of the yoke and tried making the taxi turn like I would turn a car. We both just laughed. I did better on my taxing back in to park. My right leg was shaking a tad from the adrenaline and having to stretch to really control that right rudder and break. I’m 5’5, 123lbs so I think I’ll try thicker shoes next time instead of flat Vans. And need to raise my seat up to help see over the cowling better. The heat didn’t bother me at all, I’m used to working in a hot warehouse with no a/c and no fan. We went up in a newer 172S, which also helped me relax a bit seeing it was a newer cockpit than some others I’ve seen. My instructor was so positive and encouraging and kept saying I did a great job so that was an incredible feeling to walk away with. He also sent me all the photos and videos he took of me flying. Seeing those when I got home made it even more surreal and kept pacing around my house texting the pics to friends and family as I kept reliving each moment. Definitely a literal type of high I will never forget and I absolutely cannot wait to get up in the air again!

It’s taken years for me to take this step (I’m calling it “scratching a 30-year-old itch”) and I have no idea where it will lead me, but my expectations are to simply enjoy every moment. My first ‘discovery flight’ was with a friend of a friend who just happened to have a 152 at our local airport ( ENW Kenosha) and I was hooked.
That was back in 1985. Got my private SEL ticket @ 61.5 hrs in 1987.

Great vid from an old pilot. My grandson wants to be a pilot(are you sure? I asked) and after he was sure, I agreed for him to take a discovery flight. I had him watch this and soon enough , he ran back to his room and got on MS Flight Simulator.
Yeh I told him it’s a drug, it will bite and bite hard!

Very nicely produced & presented. Could have done with this before I started learning. I like the logo. I'm currently learning in a Flight Design CT2k for a UK PPL(M), weather has been prohibitive recently but waiting to do my solo navigation.

@@FreedomFlight1 It was great! Flew a 2021 Piper. Not going to lie, I was a bit nervous. I guess I question my aptitude and ability more than anything else. The fear of learing something new like this at 53. Eventually, I'll need to either sign up and move forward or stop watching UA-cam videos. LOL
@@ron1969 A good instructor will slowly transfer their knowledge and experience to you, bit by bit - not all at once. You'll get it, it's a process. Just don't ever give up.

Just took my discovery flight here in Virginia two days ago and I super excited to start my flight training....btw I experienced a ditching off the coast of Alaska in 1962 as a child on a DC7...so I am taking on the challenge in my late 60s to master the fear...and wow it is really an amazing experience to fly a plane!!

I just had my first two flights about a week ago and I'm addicted. The first flight I was in full learning mode, but the second flight I was able to enjoy everything more. It's really such a peaceful experience, I've completely changed my plans for the next few months just to pursue flying. I did ground school first and spent a lot of time learning, which helped a ton. Having to opportunity to fly and see places around your area is super cool, my instructor was pointing out places that felt like a significant distance away by car, and they were right over the hill

After 45 or so years of flying 36 with an airline what I remember is that first flight in 1965 and my first solo. WOW I believe I can even smell the smells from that C 150. Thanks for reminding me. Acts 4:12.
Its crazy how those smells bring back memories isnt it? About a year ago I was able to go see the man that owned the flight school I learned to fly in. He was in his 90's but STILL had that same C150 in his hangar. It had not flown in many years, but when I climbed in it, the 'aroma' instantly took me back to 16 years old, ha.
I have a discovery flight lined up before the end of the year and support from a current airline pilot to guide me through the process. He sent me this video and I’m excited to try flying a plane!

thank you for response, i took my first discovery flight yesterday,sun 3/5/23 here in fla. i absolutely loved it!! light winds , 3-5 mph, he let me do everything, taxi, takeoff, landing, i did need some help on the flare though, i took the hour flight, what a great time!! ( cessna 172)

My discovery flight is Tuesday and looking to be a pretty beautiful day for a flight. 80 degrees and partly cloudy. I’ve been wanting to do this for years since I was 16. I’m 25 now and I see that it’s a good time to start flying. I’ve been on flight simulators for like 12 years with lots of experience. Around 8,000 hours actually. Mostly military flying and aerobatics with some GA flights here and there. But I’m confident that I’ll impress my flight instructor and that I’ll earn my PPL in no time.

Thanks for the great video! I had my discovery flight about a month ago and everything you described in this video happened during the flight. Especially the super challenging taxi. I’m now on lesson 3 and struggling with trim. I either apply a bit too much or too little, any tips?
Great glad it helped! On the trim...ask your CFI to have you fly around for about 20 min or so exclusively with the trim wheel and rudders to control the plane (dont touch the control wheel). I do this with my students early on to help get over 'which way' to move the trim. Plus it is kind of fun to see how well you can actually control the plane with trim alone.

Hi Anali, thanks for watching. Congrats on taking that first step! I’d suggest you get both the books I have listed in the video. You can download them for free from the FAA or follow the Amazon link to get inexpensive printed copies (I recommend). At first it may look like an overwhelming amount of information, but rest assured, it’s not hard to learn it just takes time. There are a lot of online ground schools, the Sportys Pilot Shop program is great if you prefer that over textbook reading. However, maybe wait until after your flight before investing in an online groundschool as your instructor may have other options. Let me know how it goes!

Thinking about doing a discovery flight in Anchorage, Alaska here soon. Probably on my r&r days off from the Slope here soon in early January 2024. Only decision is which one company to go with.

Hello! Well I might be too late to ask questions but I am watching your video at this moment where I have the other Google tab to book an appoinment for my Discovery Flight and I am a little bit nervous so that's why I am here. I have a question for anyone who has already gone throught he DF- do I have to know all of the instruments before I do the DF? I have been playing the MFSimulator and I'm doing some practice on how to do some landing and it's so fun and I even get nervous and I take it as if I am really flying. Thank you for the video, this made me feel better.
Hey sorry for the slow reply, no, you certainly do not need to know and understand all the instruments before your first flight. Your instructor will teach you everything you need to know when you get there. Of course, if you do have an understating of some of the things in the cockpit you will just be ahead of the game…and probably even enjoy it a little more. Flight sims are an excellent way to learn and get familiar also. Let me know how the flight goes!
Thanks for your video. I took my discovery flight about a month ago and loved it. I’ll need to research a different school, however. The woman I flew with is just a one-person operation with a line of students out the door. Although I’m in no big hurry to get this done, I’d like to keep continuity and not too much down time. I suppose it’s best to learn as much as you can on the ground before going back up?
Yes, the more you can learn on the ground the more efficient your flying will actually be. However, don’t go too long without at least a quick flight to keep you motivated! Thanks for watching.

You cannot solo unless you are 16. However, if you are younger than that, nothing prevents you from training. Many people have soloed on their 16th birthday!

Nice "discovery" video!! I'm recently retired, and always had the itch to get my PPL. So now I have the time, but funds would be difficult, but if I take my time I could swing it. My concern is that I'm a diabetic. No Insulin but, is that still a road block? Or, should I go the LSA route?? Thanks

What Timing I have a Discovery Flight scheduled for Sept 12th at 10am here in SC . I have a real talented young lady CFI is going take a 70 year old male up for not my first flight , but the first time with hands on! looking forward to the experience . It has been so cloudy her she may post pone we'll see . May be I can comment afterward . I have about 4 to 6 hours of completing ground school and will start review in prep for the text . I have my discovery flight in a few weeks in a Cirrus SR20. Decided to quit my 10+ year career in insurance and enroll in a flight program in Indianapolis, IN. Can’t wait, and don’t worry, I’m prepared to not make much money for a while. Haha
That’s awesome man, congratulations for taking this big step. Learning to fly is a rewarding journey and then flying for a living is a rewarding career. I also fly for and teach at a major airline. My new hire pilot student last week switched careers also and didn’t take his discovery flight until he was almost 40. He’s now doing what he always dreamed of, flying for a major airline.

My discovery flight is this next Sunday! I can’t believe I’m beginning to fly a plane before a car! (I’m turning 15 next week) -Any tips on taxiing?? I don’t know why I’m most scared of taxiing. I feel like it’s hard to control since I’ve tried to taxi a plane on a flight sim before. The Rudder Pedals seemed stiff and kinda hard to keep on centerline 😅😅

any tips on knowing if your gonna get some air sickness or what to do if you do get air sick but still want to keep going?
Don't let the fear of becoming sick keep you from pursing being a pilot. Give your body a chance to get acclimated to the sensations of flight, once it does, you will probably never get sick again. There were times early on in my training where I got nauseous, but after a while those tendencies went away. If you find you are prone to getting sick, ask to keep your flight lessons very short at first, keep plenty of fresh air coming in, and focus on something outside on the horizon. Whatever you do, just don't give up because of it, you will get past it!
Great video! I am 16 and I hope to be able to schedule a discovery flight sometime this year. I want to become a pilot but I am worried about the expenses of flight lessons. Any advice will be greatly appreciated
I know it’s very expensive. If you decide to do it as a career, it’s likely to be a great investment into yourself. Even slow progress is better than no progress. Hung around for the least expensive place to train. Smaller airports outside the city tend to be less expensive as less traffic getting in and out of the airport. Be super prepared for each flight, ask what to expect from your instructor so you can be very prepared. It’s worth it, I assure you. Thx for watching.

That’s great! No not really, watching videos like you are already doing can be helpful for knowing what to expect. Just show up prepared to have your life derailed as you about to join the rest of us and probably become highly addicted to flying. I wish you the best!
So I scheduled my FAA medical exam, do I need to have it done before or after my discovery flight?
Good question, you actually don’t have to have it until you make your first solo flight.

Maybe a month or so ago I came upon an aviation video here on UA-cam. I started watching more and more and more of them. Right now I study here Private Pilot License information almost every day. I became addicted. There is one " But" though .....
I have great acrophobia and am a complete white knuckle flyer. Have you ever heard this before? I don't know that I could ever get past ground school. Thoughts? :)
Hi Kris. You are not alone feeling like that, trust me. I encourage you to stay committed to learning. The more you learn, the more you will truly understand. As your understanding increases, your fear will naturally decrease. When you do start flying, make sure you are very clear to your instructor if you are still very hesitant in the air. A good instructor will work hard to slowly build your confidence. You'll get there....as long as you don't give up, just don't quit!
My discovery flight is today in a few hours. I thought id be terrified by now, but somehow i feel more excited then anything, which is weird on account im a nervous wreck 😅

Definitely never too late. If you haven’t already, look up “In The Pattern” at Denton Airport. Ask for Sherman, the owner. Tell him I sent you. Good man, running a nice operation.

When I went to do my discovery flight first thing we did, me and random young instructor we jumped into wrong airplane which in that moment I was holding myself so hard not to laugh 🤣🤣🤣🤣. And then during the whole flight he was so quiet 🤐 I was the only one talking and asking questions.

is there an age limit on how old you can be to do a discovery flight?
No there is not, I doubt any school would turn you away as a student for being “too old”! There are a lot of people that take this on later in life.
Is this the first step to getting a private pilots license? I been thinking about doing it but never knew how or where to even start.

I started by doing a ground school, which really prepares you for getting into the sky. It's much less intimidating when you know what everything does and some theory, I highly recommend it. That plus a discovery flight is the way to go, do those two things and you'll learn the next steps
Wish my discovery flight was like this. The CFI that took me literally just said lets go, we hopped in and took off. No idea if he did the inspection or not. He let me do some turns and we came right back. Showed me the facility and then just told me to have a great day.

My question Im guessing is not a common one. :) A few months ago I was bitten by the aviation bug but due in part to not having the funds quite yet have been doing a Lot of ground studying. Probably over 100 hours, so this isnt exactly a casual interest. B U T ..... have you ever dealt with a new student who has acrophobia? I heard one man say he got past it but on his Discovery flight he had a full blown panic attack.

Great question Kris. I feel confident you can get past this, just don’t give up on it. It’s imperative you find the right flight instructor, one that understands your fears or concerns and is willing to make addressing them a priority. If I was flying with you, I would just make sure we took everything very easy and give you time to get acclimated. It will happen. Much of this is probably “fear of the unknown”. Once the unknown becomes ‘known’ I think you’re confidence will increase and then you will feel more secure at high altitudes. For what it’s worth, I’ve been flying for 35 years but I hate extension ladders! ha. I just lack confidence in them and never got over it ha. Hang in there, this will be worth it!

@@FreedomFlight1 currently I’m 95% complete with my ground school so I have been asking around for CFI’s in the DFW area. Do you work for a flight school or independently?
@@BrianRhodes9763 unfortunately I’m not available right now to take on any students. If you are in the Denton area, I’d recommend In The Pattern though. Ask for Sherman, he’s the owner and could set you up with a good CFI there.
How many times can i take a discovery flight
Good question. I would say as many times as you feel you need to take one to adequately decide if this is right for you. For some, maybe several years have taken place in between. For others, maybe you are wanting to see what a flight school is like and has to offer. I dont think there should be a 'limit' so to speak, however, if you keep going to the same school and instructor every week asking for another discovery flight they might cut you off at some point! ha.

No there is not a limit. Only min agree to solo is 16, min age for private is 17.

Not sure what caused that! I’m definitely still early in the learning stage of trying to produce these. About to finish up my next one on basic radio communications. Flying airplanes is much easier than video editing if you ask me.

What is the age limit for learning how to fly?
The FAA does not have an age limit as long as you can pass the FAA medical (flight physical). The only age limit is for part 121 (airline) flying which is limited to 65...for now. Thanks for watching!
As someone who wants to become a pilot, but have an irrational fear of heights/hearing about all the pilot students that have died. How would I go about conquering this?
Just take it slow and communicate this to your instructor. Make sure you find someone that will work to build your confidence. Im certain you can overcome those fears. The more understanding you have and confidence in your ability and the aircraft the less fear you will have. Thx for watching.
im petrified of heights and in 2 hours i start my 1 hour flight, in summer im going to do my first sky dive SOLO not tandem... have i lost my mind or is this a 40 year old man chrisis? damn whatever it is it's driving me to the extremes whats next rock climbing without gear? all of a sudden this year i woke up and decided to try everything before i die

That’s 5’1” tall if my math is correct. If that’s the case, 157cm is no problem at all. Seriously, there are plenty of professional pilots that height, don’t let that stop you. Thanks for watching, hope you take that next step!
