Pros and Cons of Living in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada - What to know before moving here (2021)!

  • Today, we discuss the Pros and Cons of Living in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. There are some considerations in here that you might want to look into before moving or living here! I tried to give the top pros and cons that seem to come up from clients that are moving to Winnipeg, or moving away from Winnipeg! #LivingInWinnipeg #MovingToWinnipeg #RelocatingToWinnipeg
Pro #1: The People: The most genuine and kind people. Heck, we have the “Friendly Manitoban” license plates for a reason! It is not uncommon for people to strike up conversation with complete strangers here - which can be quite alarming at first. But it is just our way, to say hello to a new face. The residents here enjoy a more relaxed pace than many larger cities within Winnipeg. Although our population is over 700,000, it really does feel like a small town.
Con #1: Crime: Our per capita crime rates are higher, and yes we have been deemed the murder capital of Canada. But honestly, do not choose to not move here because of the crime. Much of the crime here is localized to specific areas or regions and a lot of it is non-violent in nature. A high proportion of our violent crime is often gang related, and if you know what areas to stay out of at night, don’t anticipate any problems - unless you plan to live a life of crime. Then I am sure that you can find trouble here. But any good Realtor can direct you to neighbourhoods that would be considered perfectly safe to live within.
Pro #2: Diversity: I would argue, that cities of similar size elsewhere in Canada are not nearly as culturally, racially, and religiously diverse as we are in Winnipeg. I think this diversity has made us a very welcoming and accepting community with a variety of cultures to experience.
Con #2: Transportation: Winnipeg’s public transportation system is not the greatest, with routes coming more seldom, but couple that with the cold weather when you are waiting a few minutes for your bus and those waits feel even longer. The good news is the expansion of Winnipeg’s Rapid Transit system which has improved not only many of the bus routes, but the amount of service options.
Pro #3: Dining: We have a great food scene here with a variety of options available - because of our awesome diversity. Winnipeg has amazing dining options due to its ethnically diverse population. Whether you have a craving for Dim Sum, Sushi, Steak, BBQ, Indian, Lobster, Tapas, etc. there are great options for you to indulge in.
Con #3: Construction: Due to our short summers and cold winters, Winnipeg has a very short season to do road repair. What this means is heavy construction during the summer which creates a lot of lane closures, detours, in every which way of the City.
Pro #4: Cost of Living: Our cost of living here is much lower than cities of similar size across Canada. While the National Home price average currently sits at just shy of $700,000, in Winnipeg our average home price slashes that in half - at just over $321,000 according to CREA. You may think that it would be expensive to heat a home in a province that is so cold, but Manitoba is a huge hydro-electric exporter as a result of many of our damns and hydro infrastructure. As a result, our electric costs are about one third of the kilowatt rate here than that of our counterparts in Ontario.
Con #4: Mosquitoes - We do have a high proportion of mosquitoes here because of the abundance of rivers, lakes, and flat lands that hold waters. Mosquitoes love water afterall. If you are not afraid of citronella candles and a little bit of bug spray, it would not be unheard of to use these products between the months of June to August. In years where the mosquitoes get really bad, the city of Winnipeg will often fog certain areas of the City. There ARE things that you can do in your own area to limit the amount of Mosquitoes around you too.
Pro #5 Sports: For playing, a lot more space and venues. Professional sports teams as well. The Winnipeg Jets have made the playoffs fairly consistently over the last few years, the Blue Bombers winning the Grey Cup in 2019, we now have FC Valour - a professional soccer team. The Goldeyes are our professional baseball team and offer very affordable tickets if you are wanting to take the whole family to a game on a hot summer night.
Con #5: Downtown living: In other large cities, the closer you live to downtown, the more expensive the prices become. Not in Winnipeg. Our downtown core is thought to be more of a slum at times, and as a result, not as desirable of a place to be. That being said, there have been strong pushes to revitalize our downtown core. Luxury condominiums like the glasshouse skylofts, the Canada Life Centre, Waterfront Drive, True North Square, among others.
There are also two bonus pros and cons in the video - so stay tuned!

Good video, I lived in Winnipeg most of my life and I love it. The only con for me about this city is that we have 50+ murders this year 😬, but most of the murders are either gang-related, domestic violence, or people just getting into arguments (guaranteed alcohol in involved most of them). Hopefully next year and more we get to less than 40.

I am a ewcomer in Winnipeg (Arrived on december 15th), and I must say that the first impression of the city and the people has been very positive, I am living in the area of St Vital Center and I have been told that it is a fairly safe area and as you say the people so far have been very friendly.

I’m gonna be honest, none of these cons sound like they’re that bad. I’m from the US, so I can handle mosquitos. The worst thing to me sounds like the crime rates, but again it seems like there are certain places that are safer than others and as long as you can keep your wits about you, you should be fine it seems. Plus as long as I’m not living in the US so there’s an advantage there too. Pro Number 7!

Great video. Ive been living here since 2016. I used to live in kitchener waterloo ontario for university. Only good thing about over there was it only a few hours drive away to toronto. But wpg is kinda in the middle of nowhere. But i still like it here. I think we will see a lot of growth in the next 5 to 10 years tbh seeing all the developments all over the city. Also waterloo is not as cold temperature wise even though it was still very cold imo.. but it snows just as much or more over there. Climate wise i prefer winnipeg cause of lots of sunny days. People wear sunglasses while driving in winter in winnipeg it was funny at first but i like it lol. As long as you have garage, or covered or indoor parking for your home, or even just invest in remote starter to warm up your car in the winter before leaving, its very tolerable imo.

It kinda makes sense cause winnipeg is kinda blue collar. But there’s definitely lots of higher quality jobs too and some tech jobs I never really considered cuz I don’t code ynno. Social life is actually pretty good. I’m part of lgbtq and there’s a few clubs for that which was there last weekend and it was packed. And there’s a lot of straight clubs and people in other cities think it’s surprising that winnipeg has night life but compared to Toronto I guess it’s meh, but compared to kw I think it’s great. Keep in mind there’s quite a few sketchy areas within the city. Also winnipeg has developments but we don’t look similar to Toronto or kw. We don’t build glass buildings much. Mostly low to mid rise too. Try to visit before you decide I suggest :)

Overall it is not like Weston area or South Point Douglas which are more like slums. Downtown is just not enough affordable nice places and too many condos that sell slower and stay empty. Nice places then are not found ease, just many new condos as rents are low compared to other large downtowns of Canada. Plus Winnipeg downtown needs a full grocery store and more late night or 24h cafes and pharmacy's. I think there is currently only one donut shop 24h. It's safe been only robbed like twice in 40 years. Winnipeg needs to think about the diversity you need in downtown to make it safe and lively. The central park area has people out and about later but also limited in proper places to go. They tend to use the park, so it comes across as a bit like a winos place to drink but many are just nearby residents enjoying the local park. And they drink! That said, it's not that bad a slum area, and just needs some economic balancing aka "light gentrification", with a few new affordable highrises. It would draw more working class people into that area of downtown, which could use more working citizens in the area. Central park is also often overlooked place by Winnipegers, even though it has a big culturally diverse community. With a...just a few insane criminals, prostitutes, pimps, and dealers to add to the urban vib!

Ask any Winnipegers why they dont wanna shop or live downtown and they will tell you they dont feel safe there. This is the number one reason. Im not saying this is true. I lived there for a year and it was amazing but there are parts of downtown that needs major overhaul. For one the Portage place area and the adjacent park. With tons of bums and drug addicts shooting meth in broad daylight we will have a hard time convincing people to live and shop there. So I believe we need more policing there. We need a solid plan to house the homeless. Drinking in public and littering should be criminalized. More police presence. When all of this is done, you will attract more people to live there, and with more people comes businesses. Thats how we revitalize downtown. But as long as the city turns a blind eye on the homeless and drug addicts trashing our downtown, we will not see a vibrant city centre.

I got mugged twice in Winnipeg. Brutal winters... blizzards and alcoholism is off the scale. People do a LOT of drinking in Winnipeg to pass time.

@@mianasim1243 No, sorry. We do not deal in commercial real estate. For under $200,000 you likely would just be buying a business - not a business and property.

Mosquitos have become a BIG problem as they have become immune to poisoning. There have been many cases of yellow fever and all businesses that are related to electrical stations are over saturated with many having gone out of business as they can't compete against the large corporations. You'd have better luck in Ireland or even Greenland where they are desperate for such services.

More opportunities in Newfoundland Gurvinder. Nicer place... warmer winters and low crime rates/low cost of living. High wages. 👍🏻💯
