This is a good summary, except it doesn't mention the arts scene. For a city its size, Winnipeg has an abnormally high number arts facilities, including art galleries, a symphony, an opera company, Fringe, Jazz and Folk Festivals, Folklorama, theatre companies, music clubs, several recording studios, book stores, and thousands of citizens who patronize or particpate in the arts.

I disagree with a few things you've said. First, slum seems like a harsh word for downtown. I moved here from Toronto. I live and work downtown and I love the lifestyle. There are definitely transient people downtown, but generally they don't cause any trouble and you will find transient people in any downtown core. I have lived here since 2016 and I haven't owned a car since I moved here. I love walking and biking and I take the transit, cabs and have a membership with Peg City Car Co-op. The city is so small, you really don't need a car. Especially if you live within walking distance to work. Also, the culture in Winnipeg is like most big-city suburbs - most people have cars. So if you go out with a friend, just ride in their car. Winnipeg is one of the few capital cities in Canada where you can easily afford to live in comfortable to luxurious accommodation in a downtown setting.
There are plenty of solid areas for solid ROI. But the returns can be different depending on area. If you are looking for cash on cash return, you might look at some areas where property prices are lower and monthly cash flow is high - but in the long run these areas don't appreciate as much. Alternatively, you can look in faster-appreciating areas but the monthly cash flow may not be as lucrative. Although, I have found in almost all areas of Winnipeg that it is still reasonable to find deals that provide positive cash flow!

Hmmm... that's a good question. Snow usually starts to stick around November and has melted by mid-April. The City is usually pretty fast to clean the roads - so I would like to think around a 6-month window if you are okay with biking in the cooler weather. I'm not that versed in what appropriate motorcycle weather is though!
You can get your bike on the road in April. One problem is that there is a lot of sand and gravel on the streets from the winter. They don't seem to get the streets swept until the 3rd week of April I ride from May to the middle of Oct. After that the nights are getting chilly. At the end of Oct. the snow can come anytime. I have to warn you that motorcycle insurance insurance is very expensive here. I pay around $1200 for the riding season. That would be about the average.

Comprehensive and honest! I just moved here a few months ago. I agree with everything except needing a car. The bus system works just fine for me even in the winter. Maybe because I live right across the bus stop. Uber is pretty reasonable if I’m running late and groceries can be delivered to my doorstep for cheap

Great points. We moved from Toronto to Wpg in 2023. Housing here is SO CHEAP! Kids love their schools. Our commutes to work are so easy and so fast. We used to spend so much time in traffic and it added a lot of stress to our lives. As you said, the downtown is sleepy. Not that much going on. For us, the $$$ we save from low mortgage, etc, we use that to take 2 or 3 int'l trips each year.

My wife got an excellent job in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1996. We bought a house and moved down there and were there for 9 years and had exactly zero problems with crime of any sort. Little Rock had so many wonderful people and great things to do, we greatly enjoyed so many things during our time there. Here’s the odd part, we had no idea that Little Rock had one of the highest murder rates in the USA for cities of its size, the kind of murder rate that Winnipeg would gladly point out they did not have. BUT the violence in Little Rock was almost exclusively between certain types of people and happened in certain neighbourhoods and we had no idea it even existed (this was before social media and smart phones). Yes, anything can happen in most any city, but don’t let crime statistics make you fearful when considering places to live, do your research on the best places in your destination city and when you make your move it’s highly likely you will be fine. In term of Coldness, wet cold feels much colder than dry cold, bc and Ontario have wet cold, Manitoba has dry cold, global warming also makes Winnipeg warmer than I came 20+ years ago. I was born and lived in a mega city in Warm weather for 20 years, overall I don’t think winter is terrible here
Just to add about things to do in Winnipeg, especially if you're looking for night life. Winnipeg (precovid) has definitely seen a resurgence over the last few years. Unfortunately, due to covid restrictions, these bars and venues have taken a hit, but hopefully, we will see another resurgence. The food scene in Winnipeg is also great. However, like most consumer items, expect a price increase...but inflation is hitting all of Canada, not just Winnipeg. Thanks for highlighting the positives in Winnipeg. I lived in Toronto for 3 years before moving back home to Winnipeg and just like Wpg, there are certain neighborhoods in Toronto that you do not want to venture into at night. As for Toronto's downtown ...there are only certain parts of the downtown that stay busy. It's not as lively as people think (I know cause I lived downtown Toronto for a few months). Certainly Winnipeg needs to improve its downtown "quality of life", but I think it's improving with all the "revitilizing" going in Winnipeg's core. Again, thanks for the video! 😁
I was born in Winnipeg myself.. it always sounds so bad but it's really localized.. there's some really safe places to live and not worry. Avoid the west end, north end, maybe the west Broadway area... St James is iffy but honestly, I work downtown, and there's alot of good things happening. Don't take the stigma for fact.. Definitely stay out of the west or north end, and the point Douglas area
Downtown is nice if you get out of portage place I'm thinking. City place is iffy. Come to Hargrave Street Market. It's so much safer. It's really localized
To clarify on the weather, winter average during Dec, Jan, Feb, and March is between -15C to -25C. Summer average June, July, Aug, and Sept, is between +20C to +35. Only once in my 40+ years here, has it ever been -50C, and only a dozen or so times has it been worse than -40C with the wind-chill...but yes, when it's cold, you best have a warm place close by!
I concur. I've lived here for over 60 years and I'd say that each winter there are about ten or fifteen really cold days. Most winter days are cold, but not to the point where you cannot be comfortable outside. If you dress properly you will be fine.
Don't waste your money on running block heaters in your cars in the winter, what you need is a car BATTERY HEATER. Most engines have hard time turning over in the cold not because the oil gets slow moving but the main reason is in the cold the BATTERY outputs only a small percentage of crank AMPs and has hard time turning the engine. Battery heaters use about 10% of electricity of block heaters. Also make sure to use synthetic oil in your engine which doesn't get thick and slow moving in the cold and this will help even more. Synthetic oil is more expensive but again you save more money from not using a block heater and also synthetic oil lasts twice as long as regular oil so you only need to stop for oil changes half as many times. We have been using this combo of battery heater and synthetic oil in our cars (all parked outside all year around) for many years and never had any problem starting any of them. Use a car battery heater and save a lot on energy cost. Thank you for the video Jennifer!

I wouldn't say that you need a car, i used to get everywhere on a bike even during the winter and many many people don't bother with cars. I've also driven for 20 years without winter tires but moving here for the first time might take some getting used to lol I live in my dream house in the North End and I'll probably be here until I croak lol. To be honest, this is not our area of expertise as we don't work in the rental space. I believe that you would be within the limits of the rules, so long as you don't let your pets loose outside or chain them up for extended periods of time. Dugald is soooo close to Winnipeg. To the Winnipeg perimeter, it is only a 6 minute drive. It is a developing community - think small, prairie town with new houses going up. It's a great community!
@@markusaurelius8822 We have seen some increases - hydro rates have remained the same. Cost of groceries have increased here and are on par with the rest of Canada in terms of increases. Home prices also had a sharp incline followed by a bit of a correction to early 2021 pricing. I will try and do more thorough research and post a new video!

Hi Jack - unfortunately nobody on our team deals in rental contracts. We all specialize in resale or new construction. Truthfully, there isn't an organized rental market here. People usually do best by searching Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, and Rentals.ca
In 2006 me and my family were supposed to move to Edmonton from Nova Scotia but we stopped here at my mom's aunt's house for the night and my dad decided to move here because he really likes this city and he probably didn't want to do more traveling LOL. I grew up here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
I lived there for many many years and did my Uni there. When I moved to Ottawa, the peg is thought of as a slum. I really liked the place. Now I've been in the UK (not london) for 20 years and my wife and I are now planning of moving back to Winnipeg. Houses in Winnipeg affordable for us aside from the taxes. The land transfer tax is quite high and the solicitor fees are quite high compared to the UK. Crikey. But we'll make a go of it!
The big difference between Winnipeg and any other big city in N. America is the lack of Expressway Highways besides the Perimeter Hwy (Which itself has taken a long time to finally turn into a real highway like what other cities have). Because there are no expressways, it can take forever to get from one side of town to the other. Also, the city is addicted to speed camera revenues.
And by forever, let's keep things in perspective to other large cities. For instance, clients moving here from BC tell me their daily commute is 3 hours from one end of the City to another. Here, it would be 45 minutes...

My husband and I recently retired and are looking at moving to Winnipeg. What have you heard is the best area of the city to buy a home for young retirees in terms of activities (clubs, recreational activities, learn to play bridge, learn to curl..etc) and opportunities to meet people?
There are some really great areas in the city for all of these activities! I would highly recommend River Heights, Riverview or Norwood flats as they are all somewhat centrally located and close to a variety of community clubs that offer these activities! They are also all close to green space as well.
Like other cities in Canada, Phentermine drug s do make more crimes in Winnipeg than before, I lived in Winnipeg since 97, overall it is a fine place to live, don’t need to believe the data about most murders per 100 people, I used to live in west end area which is a so called bad area for many years and it is fine for me
I lived in Winnipeg for 4 years. In the winter, if the wind is coming at you from the side, the cold feels like it's going to cut your nose off...loll...that's what happens when it's so cold!

You'll be one of many East Indian students living in the city. Most rent rooms or basements. Some get together and rent houses. The areas mentioned earlier are close to the UofM, but there are other areas close by also, such as Lindenwoods and Bridgewater (a newer area). Last point. A lot, and I mean a lot of East Indian students like to live in the Maples area. It is not close by, but the area is like Mini India. The area has tons of East Indian restaurants, East Indian grocery stores, a few Gurdwaras (probably spelt that wrong) and a theatre that usually show Punjabi/Hindi movies on Sundays. It is fill with East Indian families who rent out their basements or rooms to students. The area has tons of East Indian students renting. It has come to the point that I see more East Indian people walking the streets in the area than White folks.
Nothing wrong with Winnipeg MB. Crime is not as bad as they mentioned. Yes certain neighborhood are dangerous,but there are plenty of areas which are super safe . Buses are very available most of time but same neighborhood buses don't run 24hrs. Bus shelters are not warmed in winter, that's downside side. Winter is harsh as western INTRARIO.
Winter is more harsh than Western Ontario - but equivalent to North Western Ontario (we are only two hours away from Kenora, Ontario). However, the windchill has a more profound effect here which does make it feel cooler.

Hi Peter - for rentals, that is actually not an area we work in. We are strictly resale or new construction purchases. Even my own rentals, I hire a company to rent out! Your best bet is to check out Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji and Rentals.ca. For car insurance, it is handled publicly here and will depend on a variety of factors that are quite personal (age, driving history, car type, etc). I would call MPI as they can likely give you a quote by phone! If you want to try their online calculator, it can be found here: apps.mpi.mb.ca/irc/vehicle.asp#

What I can tell you is that I know that the Universities and Colleges all have great programs to help place students in jobs, and if you want an overall idea of job offerings here then Indeed is a great place to start to see prospects. Many service businesses are understaffed and could definitely use the help too!
11 Winters in the sixties was enough for me. Never forget the day (January 27/71) we left Winnipeg, it was freezing cold. Upon arrival in Calgary by plane, there was water running in the streets. A Chinook!!
Hi Annemarie - there isn't an organized real estate market for rentals here, unfortunately. As a result, we don't work in that area. The best spots to find available rentals is usually between Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, and Rentals.ca as well as checking property management pages.
That's a tough question to answer! There are some gyms that offer more limited services and only bill about $20 per month. There are some though that have an abundance of services and charge closer to $100 per month. It depends on what you are looking for!
The Pan Am pool is your best value. Run by the city so the Rates are lower than most Gyms.Also you have indoor track all year and a swimming option as well . Easy to get to.Just don’t expect a lot of high tech machines and because it’s City they are closed on all holidays

Here’s the odd part, we had no idea that Little Rock had one of the highest murder rates in the USA for cities of its size, the kind of murder rate that Winnipeg would gladly point out they did not have. BUT the violence in Little Rock was almost exclusively between certain types of people and happened in certain neighbourhoods and we had no idea it even existed (this was before social media and smart phones). Yes, anything can happen in most any city, but don’t let crime statistics make you fearful when considering places to live, do your research on the best places in your destination city and when you make your move it’s highly likely you will be fine. In term of Coldness, wet cold feels much colder than dry cold, bc and Ontario have wet cold, Manitoba has dry cold, global warming also makes Winnipeg warmer than I came 20+ years ago. I was born and lived in a mega city in Warm weather for 20 years, overall I don’t think winter is terrible here

Just to add about things to do in Winnipeg, especially if you're looking for night life. Winnipeg (precovid) has definitely seen a resurgence over the last few years. Unfortunately, due to covid restrictions, these bars and venues have taken a hit, but hopefully, we will see another resurgence. The food scene in Winnipeg is also great. However, like most consumer items, expect a price increase...but inflation is hitting all of Canada, not just Winnipeg.

I lived in Toronto for 3 years before moving back home to Winnipeg and just like Wpg, there are certain neighborhoods in Toronto that you do not want to venture into at night. As for Toronto's downtown ...there are only certain parts of the downtown that stay busy. It's not as lively as people think (I know cause I lived downtown Toronto for a few months). Certainly Winnipeg needs to improve its downtown "quality of life", but I think it's improving with all the "revitilizing" going in Winnipeg's core.

I was born in Winnipeg myself.. it always sounds so bad but it's really localized.. there's some really safe places to live and not worry. Avoid the west end, north end, maybe the west Broadway area... St James is iffy but honestly, I work downtown, and there's alot of good things happening. Don't take the stigma for fact.. Definitely stay out of the west or north end, and the point Douglas area
Downtown is nice if you get out of portage place I'm thinking. City place is iffy. Come to Hargrave Street Market. It's so much safer. It's really localized

To clarify on the weather, winter average during Dec, Jan, Feb, and March is between -15C to -25C. Summer average June, July, Aug, and Sept, is between +20C to +35. Only once in my 40+ years here, has it ever been -50C, and only a dozen or so times has it been worse than -40C with the wind-chill...but yes, when it's cold, you best have a warm place close by!

I concur. I've lived here for over 60 years and I'd say that each winter there are about ten or fifteen really cold days. Most winter days are cold, but not to the point where you cannot be comfortable outside. If you dress properly you will be fine.

Don't waste your money on running block heaters in your cars in the winter, what you need is a car BATTERY HEATER. Most engines have hard time turning over in the cold not because the oil gets slow moving but the main reason is in the cold the BATTERY outputs only a small percentage of crank AMPs and has hard time turning the engine. Battery heaters use about 10% of electricity of block heaters. Also make sure to use synthetic oil in your engine which doesn't get thick and slow moving in the cold and this will help even more. Synthetic oil is more expensive but again you save more money from not using a block heater and also synthetic oil lasts twice as long as regular oil so you only need to stop for oil changes half as many times. We have been using this combo of battery heater and synthetic oil in our cars (all parked outside all year around) for many years and never had any problem starting any of them. Use a car battery heater and save a lot on energy cost. Thank you for the video Jennifer!

hi there! i've been following your channel for a while and i have a question. i heard each province has their own pet rules for housing and renting, about how many animals you could have. is there a limit in manitoba? i have 3 cats and 2 dogs, i will have some problem?
To be honest, this is not our area of expertise as we don't work in the rental space. I believe that you would be within the limits of the rules, so long as you don't let your pets loose outside or chain them up for extended periods of time. @@markusaurelius8822 We have seen some increases - hydro rates have remained the same. Cost of groceries have increased here and are on par with the rest of Canada in terms of increases. Home prices also had a sharp incline followed by a bit of a correction to early 2021 pricing. I will try and do more thorough research and post a new video!

@@markusaurelius8822 The sharp incline in prices was about 20% from the beginning of the pandemic. However, with the correction currently happening some are speculating we will lose about 12% of the home values - and thus be up by about 8% from when the pandemic started.

In 2006 me and my family were supposed to move to Edmonton from Nova Scotia but we stopped here at my mom's aunt's house for the night and my dad decided to move here because he really likes this city and he probably didn't want to do more traveling LOL. I lived there for many many years and did my Uni there. When I moved to Ottawa, the peg is thought of as a slum. I really liked the place. Now I've been in the UK (not london) for 20 years and my wife and I are now planning of moving back to Winnipeg.
Houses in Winnipeg affordable for us aside from the taxes. The land transfer tax is quite high and the solicitor fees are quite high compared to the UK. Crikey. But we'll make a go of it!

The big difference between Winnipeg and any other big city in N. America is the lack of Expressway Highways besides the Perimeter Hwy (Which itself has taken a long time to finally turn into a real highway like what other cities have). Because there are no expressways, it can take forever to get from one side of town to the other.
Also, the city is addicted to speed camera revenues.
And by forever, let's keep things in perspective to other large cities. For instance, clients moving here from BC tell me their daily commute is 3 hours from one end of the City to another. Here, it would be 45 minutes...
The hockey team is pretty bad right now, hopefully they'll make improvements and make the playoffs this season. Go Jets.❤

My husband and I recently retired and are looking at moving to Winnipeg. What have you heard is the best area of the city to buy a home for young retirees in terms of activities (clubs, recreational activities, learn to play bridge, learn to curl..etc) and opportunities to meet people?
There are some really great areas in the city for all of these activities! I would highly recommend River Heights, Riverview or Norwood flats as they are all somewhat centrally located and close to a variety of community clubs that offer these activities! They are also all close to green space as well.
You're going to want to look at the North End or Point Douglas. Highly desirable and affordable.
Like other cities in Canada, Phentermine drug s do make more crimes in Winnipeg than before, I lived in Winnipeg since 97, overall it is a fine place to live, don’t need to believe the data about most murders per 100 people, I used to live in west end area which is a so called bad area for many years and it is fine for me

I lived in Winnipeg for 4 years. In the winter, if the wind is coming at you from the side, the cold feels like it's going to cut your nose off...loll...that's what happens when it's so cold!

You'll be one of many East Indian students living in the city. Most rent rooms or basements. Some get together and rent houses. The areas mentioned earlier are close to the UofM, but there are other areas close by also, such as Lindenwoods and Bridgewater (a newer area). Last point. A lot, and I mean a lot of East Indian students like to live in the Maples area. It is not close by, but the area is like Mini India. The area has tons of East Indian restaurants, East Indian grocery stores, a few Gurdwaras (probably spelt that wrong) and a theatre that usually show Punjabi/Hindi movies on Sundays. It is fill with East Indian families who rent out their basements or rooms to students. The area has tons of East Indian students renting. It has come to the point that I see more East Indian people walking the streets in the area than White folks.

Nothing wrong with Winnipeg MB. Crime is not as bad as they mentioned. Yes certain neighborhood are dangerous,but there are plenty of areas which are super safe . Buses are very available most of time but same neighborhood buses don't run 24hrs. Bus shelters are not warmed in winter, that's downside side. Winter is harsh as western INTRARIO.
Winter is more harsh than Western Ontario - but equivalent to North Western Ontario (we are only two hours away from Kenora, Ontario). However, the windchill has a more profound effect here which does make it feel cooler.
So why would people live in the dangerous areas?

Hi Peter - for rentals, that is actually not an area we work in. We are strictly resale or new construction purchases. Even my own rentals, I hire a company to rent out! Your best bet is to check out Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji and Rentals.ca. For car insurance, it is handled publicly here and will depend on a variety of factors that are quite personal (age, driving history, car type, etc). I would call MPI as they can likely give you a quote by phone! If you want to try their online calculator, it can be found here: apps.mpi.mb.ca/irc/vehicle.asp#

What I can tell you is that I know that the Universities and Colleges all have great programs to help place students in jobs, and if you want an overall idea of job offerings here then Indeed is a great place to start to see prospects. That's a tough question to answer! There are some gyms that offer more limited services and only bill about $20 per month. There are some though that have an abundance of services and charge closer to $100 per month. It depends on what you are looking for!
The Pan Am pool is your best value. Run by the city so the Rates are lower than most Gyms.Also you have indoor track all year and a swimming option as well . Easy to get to.Just don’t expect a lot of high tech machines and because it’s City they are closed on all holidays
