How to do Buteyko Breathing Exercise for Adults

    In this video Patrick McKeown will show you how to perform Buteyko Breathing Exercise for Adults.
    The Buteyko method or Buteyko Breathing Technique is a form of complementary or alternative physical therapy that proposes the use of breathing exercises primarily as a treatment for asthma and other respiratory conditions.
    Buteyko Breathing Exercise:
    -Gently breathe out through nose
    -Pinch nose with fingers to hold breath
    -Hold breath for as long as possible
    -Sway or nod your head as a distraction
    -Release nose and resume breathing
    -Calm breathing as soon as possible
    -Wait half minute to one minute. Repeat six times.
    Results suggested that breath holding increased the nasal volume, due to shrinkage of nasal membrane promptly and evenly within the nasal cavity.
    Nasal airway resistance was decreased during breath holding in man and during experimentally induced asphyxia in animals.
    When nasal breathing takes place in the presence of significant obstruction, there is an increase of FCO2, a decrease in FO2, and a decrease in nasal airway resistance. In other words, when nasal breathing is forced to push against significant obstruction, the effect of this obstruction appears to be that of decreasing the nasal resistance.

    This works i did it like 7 times and didnt work right away, it worked only for 1 nostril, but then he says:"if you breath thru your blocked nose your nose will open" so i continue breathing thru my nose with my moouth completly shut and now im breathing decently and for me thats amazing because i couldnt breath even a bit from any nostril, i was full blocked on both nostrils.

    Just did the technique for congested left side that had stayed congested for a few days. Did the head movements on the first few and then walked the last 2 times. Results: some sense of clearing but still blosked; very lightly blew my nose; now completely clear. For me it worked better than a nasal rinse.

    Oh my! I did it and it opened my clogged nose instantly. I thought both my nose were clogged. I have this breathing problem for a few years already and my ENT even suggested surgery. But when this guy on the video said to pinch one nose to see which one is blocked, I realized it's only my left nose and it opened up immediately just after one round. Amazing! I just hope it will work permanently. But he said just keep doing this technique and it will work permanently.

    Pinching your nose opens up chest airways by acupressure reflex (gv26).
    You can get the same effect naturally without any anitics by tightening lips (stiff upper lip).
    In an asthma attack like ​ do not gasp for air with slack lips and instead inhale with firm lips to relax chest irways by acupressure reflex gv26. So fiddling with the nose and tightening lips have the same workings.

    Thank you very much! I just ordered your book on the buteyko method, I loved the oxygen advantage, I can't wait for this one. Actually, I litterally can't wait, I need to ask you a question (and sorry if you explain it in the book): Why do we need to pinch the nose for the first exercise ? Can't we just stop breathing ?

      Hi Charlie, thank you for your interest in our method. It is not necessary to pinch your nose, yes, you coluld just hold the breath, until you feel a strong air hunger, if you are uncomfortable with pinching the nose.

    When inhaling, does it matter how long the inhale as long as it is light and through the nose? Or is it the same as the excercise where you take a short inhalation?

    My nose has opened. Suffering from hayfever and wheezing .rhinitis.
    I have discovered this today after using the blue inhaler tester every couple of hours. I will report here after using this technique for a couple of days .
    Had been hyperventilating and using the inhaler at an increasing speed. Only after doing 5 mins of this rxcercise my left blocked nose is open. My loud wheezing has gone down 80%.
    I will come back and report at the end of day about my inhaler usage

    What about central sleep apnea?

    First method against a congested nose: pinch your nose and hold your breath for about 30 seconds + until you have Medium-strong air shortage. If possible move a bit meanwhile, for example nod. Then breathe and take a break for 30sec-1min. Repeat 5 times.
    Second method: pinch the nose and walk as long as you can until you have air shortage, then breathe.

      this excersise is one of the Buteyko techniques... There is not only one... I think you mean reduced breathing, which is explained in another Patrick video...

    This is Kung-Fu breathing! This is the meditative way of breathing used for 1,500 years by practitioners of Kung Fu. Also block one nostril at a time and place your index finger in the center of your forehead.

      Dear Gio, slow breathing improves functioning of the autonomic nervous system. Gently, slow breathing through the nose. Breathing should not be hard. Light breathing means to take less air to your lungs so that you feel air hunger - but not to feel stressed while doing this. One can breathe low and light at the same time.     deviation of septum is nothing i had that. Problem was the turbinectomy wich cuts off tissues who humidify and filter air correctly...

      That's difficult Elie G,
      Things like adenoidectomies, tonsillectomies and turbinectomies have been the go-to for many doctors for years to improve breathing issues.
      However, medical studies have shown that they may only be a temporary solution to improving breathing. Also, removal of tonsils/adenoids/turbinates at an early age can lead to a greater chance of secondary infection in later life.
      Daily functional breathing exercises, better nutrition and breathing only through the nose should help.

    weird but I find my eyesight slightly sharpen after holding breath / slowing the breath down. Does anybody notice the same?

      Yes. I have been allowing my breath to slow down twice a day in meditation, by allowing my outbreath to become longer and longer. (I started meditating that way after a 3 day Buteyko training in 2002 which changed my life.) I have often noticed that my eyesight is clearer after meditating. I no longer have asthma, and I have only had colds about 5 times in almost 20 years.

    Also, he should say to only sway or nod your head if you need to in order to refrain from inhaling for as along as possible. But are we supposed to refrain from inhaling for as long as possible. That is implied but not made explicit. Nodding your head uses energy and will decrease the amount of time that you can keep from inhaling. Unclear instructions.

      The purpose is not to push harder than you can doing the nose unblocking exercise. Do it as long as you feel comfortable. Also, measure your CP score. Nasal stuffines diminishes with CP 25 seconds plus. Wearing the tape at night is also beneficial.

      I do both, to good effect. Butyeko is for general breathing throughout life, WHM is for a limited series of deep breathing rounds, for me, in the morning. Along with the cold exposure, it is having a very profound effect on my health - I have ME and have more energy than ever before.

      Reece A. I know a little bit about wimhof... Doesn't Wimhof have a part of his technique where he holds the breath with empty lungs...therefore increasing CO2? He has both retention with full lungs and empty lungs.

    Hi so I just learned about this the other day, but the guy who taught kept putting huge emphasis on making sure i breathe from my diaphragm, but if you are breathing lightly, slow, soft, shallow, im barely taking from the top of my lungs let alone breathing from my diaphragm! How do i do both at the same time? So confused.

Hows it going Reece I suffer from epilepsy been so for 6-8years, this technique has had some changes and cures amongst a lot of epileptics, so I'm giving it a try already as I'm here typing🙌. What I understood is that, breathe 2times normal through your nose and out your nose, then on the 3rd time do a gently half deep breathe, and hold it for 15-20sec. while doing so nod your head up and down as saying yes and let go of the air Through your nostril after that, inhale again through your nose but gently in small portions, in and out.. and after 1mnt repeat for 5times.. Hopefully this helps

      thank you, but that is still not breathing deep from the diaphragm, like everyone keeps saying is important to do, maybe they are wrong, because with this you are barely pulling from the top of the lungs. and after i hold my breath, which causes me a little anxiety, i breath faster, deeper and more breaths to make up for holding my breath which is defeating the point, i guess in have to keep practicing and hopefully the slight panic feeling will go away, i was holding my nose and that was making it way worse.

      Reece A. Seems to me that that's what's happening to you, the anxiety of having to hold your breath and inhaling heavy after you holding your breath/out. Cause what I understood was, after you hold your breath for the 15-20sec inhale again through your nostrils but in a gently/normal manner as if you weren't doing anything.. (as if the breathing technique you're practicing isn't taking place).meaning that to not get spooked, control your breathing . after that let 1mnt go by and practice again a total of 5times so 10mnts total I say, but take your time it's best to do it right than doing something completely the opposite . Hope this helps more

      @@reecea.419 If your anxious and gasping for air then don't hold your breath that long. Start with maybe 10 secs and as you practice you will be able to go longer and longer without gasping for air.

    Hold your breath? What breath? We have exhaled. More clear would be to say "refrain from inhaling." Holding one's breath usually means to inhale and hold the breath, but in this exercise you are to exhale and refrain from inhaling.

      An understandable comment @samiranmondal9818 as so many breathing techniques take inspiration from yoga and other traditional breathing practices.
      Also, both Buteyko and prayanama insist on nose breathing.
      However there are many differences between the two when you look closer.
      This medical study showing the benefits of Buteyko and pranayama for asthmatics is a good example of the two being used in a clinical setting.
      Buteyko performed better but both were beneficial.
