    The Nose:
    - One of the first lessons in the Yogi Science of Breath is to learn how to breathe through the nostrils and to overcome the common practice of mouth-breathing.
    - Many of the diseases to which civilized man is subject are undoubtedly caused by this common habit of mouth breathing.
Benefits of nose breathing by Dr. Maurice Cottle, who founded the American Rhinologic Society in 1954. Your nose performs at least 30 functions, all of which are important supplements to the roles played by the lungs, heart and other organs.
Nose breathing imposes approximately 50 percent more resistance to the air stream than mouth breathing during wakefulness, resulting in 10-20 percent more O2 uptake.
    Nose Breathing Benefits:
    - Warms and humidifies incoming air.
    - Removes a significant amount of germs and bacteria.
    - Increased risk of developing forward head posture, and reduced respiratory strength.
    - A dry mouth also increases acidification of the mouth and results in more dental cavities and gum disease.
    Mouth breathing:
    - Mouth breathing causes bad breath due to altered bacterial flora.
    - Proven to significantly increase the number of occurrences of snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.
    Nitric Oxide:
    - Nitric oxide (NO) is released in the nasal airways in humans. During inspiration through the nose, this NO will follow the airstream to the lower airways and the lungs. Nasal derived NO has been shown to increase arterial oxygen tension and reduce pulmonary vascular resistance, thereby acting as an airborne messenger.
    - Since NO is continuously released into the nasal airways the concentration will be dependent on the flow rate by which the sample is aspirated. Thus, nasal NO concentrations are higher at lower flow rates.
    The Diaphragm:
    - Mouth breathing is considered an abnormal and inefficient adaption of breathing mode and it may induce functional, postural, biomechanical and occlusal imbalances.
    - To evaluate diaphragmatic amplitude (DA) in nasal and mouth-breathing adults. The study evaluated 38 mouth-breathing (MB group) and 38 nasal-breathing (NB group) adults, from 18 to 30 years old and both sexes.
    - Mouth breathing reflected on the lower recruitment of the accessory inspiratory muscles during fast inspiration and lower diaphragmatic amplitude, compared to nasal breathing.
    The Benefits of Diaphragm breathing:
    - 16 athletes during an exhaustive training session. After the exercise, athletes were divided into two equivalent groups of eight subjects. Subjects of the studied group spent 1h relaxing performing diaphragmatic breathing and concentrating on their breath in a quiet place.
    - Results demonstrate that relaxation induced by diaphragmatic breathing increases the antioxidant defense status in athletes after exhaustive exercise. These effects correlate with the concomitant decrease in cortisol and the increase in melatonin.
-Diaphragmatic breathing reduces heart rates, increases insulin, reduces glycemia, and reduces free-radical production as indicated by the higher antioxidants levels.
-The consequence is a lower level of oxidative stress, which suggests that an appropriate diaphragmatic breathing could protect athletes from long-term adverse effects of free radicals.

I ask this with humility , shouldnt you breathe two breaths in thrlugh both the nose and mouth and 1 breath out through mouth when running.... for proper oxygen intake and co2 outake since running is not the same as when still, your heart rate is faster when jogging.. ps i started low beart heart rate running and OMG it changed my life

Ray Rivera I tried this, started a few weeks ago, I would say that it took 1 month until I notice no difference in my ability to run. However I only started running like 3 months ago so it’s not like I had the best cardio at the beginning. I would always try to breath through your mouth no matter what
Also as stated in the video it helps with oxygen absorption into the body.

I am a very successful high school track athlete and for the 4/5 years as a runner I was a mouth breather. I started nose breathing while running and what surprised me the most was that my jaw was forced forward. By the end of a 30 minute run I would have to begin mouth breathing because my jaw muscles were too tired from being in their proper place. Fortunately my jaw muscles have improved and now they no bother me after about 5 runs since nose breathing. My cardio has drastically improved and my mouth no longer gets dry. every time my mouth gets dry it results in a bad run but with nose breathing that is no longer a problem. What I have taken away from nose breathing is that my airways have expanded, I can run faster for longer and my mouth no longer dries up which acts a a placebo for a bad run. I also found that because I was breathing heavily through my nose, all the built up mucus is blown out. I know that a build up of mucus in the nose is a fast way to get sick so this is a nice way to mitigate a build up of mucus

I taught myself how to nose breathe when I was around 8-9 years old when I figured out that I could control or recover from an asthma attack by breathing through my nose rather than my mouth.
The calming effect is interesting because I have always been the one my family came to in a crisis as I was the calm one. I never thought that nose breathing would count toward that.
Just watching this video made me check to see that I was nasal breathing and I was, haha.
It also must be why I hate it when I have a cold because its tough to breathe through the nose and have to mouth breathe which feels kind of weird.

I like how he touched up on; recovery from injuries. I got into a bike collision and luckily had nothing fractured, except a minor one, on my upper back, near the trapezoid area, obviously correlated to the nervous system. But luckily, that was it... only had scars and laserations on numerous parts of my body.
But what I realized was, I normally have a great of blood-flow, due to my diet, breathing, supplement in-take and I couldn't help but notice how fast my scars were healing, within 2 days after the accident. I guess it has something to do with blood flow, oxygen, nitric oxide, and of course breathing.

    Thanks for this information, Patrick.
I had been living the first 24 years of my life with a nasal obstruction. (A deviated septum and enlarged turbinates).
I had surgery to clear my nasal obstruction, and immediately after having healed up enough to breathe through my nose I noticed numerous quality of life improvements. No more daytime yawning, less brain fog.
I noticed I still had a dry mouth though from overnight mouth breathing, and I tried taping my mouth shut while sleeping. It was such a drastic change:
-Sleeping 7-8 hours now instead of 10+. I wake up feeling refreshed.
    -Constant fatigue gone.
-My concentration is better, no ADD medication required.
-Nasal breathing during exercise has massively improved my exercise induced asthma, I ran 5ks consecutively for the first time ever, with little challenge. Before I'd get an asthma attack in a matter of minutes from exercise.
-Decades long depression gone, I think my poor sleep was impacting my mood far more than I could have ever guessed.
    Thank you so much!

What is fascinating to me is the link between nose breathing and the parasympathetic nervous system. The vagus nerve, the largest in the body, is connected to the parasympathetic nervous system. It relaxes everything in the body including the digestive system. How many issues are connected to the digestive system? Breathing only through the nose in even, calm breaths allows every system of the body to relax and repair.

Excellent information, I am nearly 70 years old and have until just recently been a prolific mouth breather. I broke my nose when young and always thought that, that was the reason I seemly couldn't breathe through my nose as much. However just recently I have developed a sort wooping cough that keeps me awake at nights, especially if I get a chill or the like. It got so chronic that I just new I had to just close my mouth and breathe through my nose. It seems to have worked. I still have this desire to cough from time to time, but I have confidence that all that has been shown by the learned speaker has filled the missing pieces that I was not aware of. I thank Mr McKeown very much.

Great video, I have been meditating for about 7 years now and doing breathing exercises for the past few years. I would like to get my dad into breathing exercises. A few months ago he had a Laryngectomy, meaning he now breathes through a stoma in his neck instead of his nose and mouth.
I'm wondering how it would be for those neck breathers to do these kinds of breathing exercises as they can no longer breathe through their nose.
Do you have any idea how it would be or have you dealt with anyone before? Any information would be highly appreciated.
I know this wouldn't be in high demand but I'm sure it would be highly appreciated by Laryngectomees if you could make a video on this.

One thing I'd love to add is one can do acupressure up under their jaw (massage the deep under jaw muscles and surrounding area) and flexing the tongue at the same time up to the roof of the mouth!! DO this as an exercise of your jaw and OMG the benefits are amazing! This can also and should be done to the sinuses that are beside each nostril. One might notice INSTANT relief from pressure there, like from a sinus attack due to allergies! Massage the face with hard presses to the point you can belay take it. Just take it slow and steady.

to add to this, there is a time to be mouth/stress breathing and that is during extreme physical exertion such as high school sports or HIIT training. the key to this is that afterwards you need to be breathing through your nose and slowing your breathing or even try breathing exercises where you are exerting quick successions of nasal breaths to get that diaphragm to move and calm down. also remember when taking meditation breaths, the key is to calming the vagus nerve which plays a huge part in many many bodily functions. I.e heart, lungs, gastro and many others.

Off on how long humanity has been around, for the Earth is only 6,000 years. That said, the other information on nose breathing is great & certainly makes sense to me personally.
One ironic problem I have observed for a long time now with others who have given instructions for breathing exercises to calm the body's related systems down & lower heart rate & blood pressure to go into a more relaxed state of being is that they instruct to exhale through the mouth. This makes it so that the follower of these instructions does not get the full benefit, & maybe in some cases no benefit, from these exercises, for the mouth becomes dry &, of course, uncomfortable as a result.
It is so often taking information from there, & some from here, & another piece or portions from over there, & so on to come up with a fuller picture on so many things.
Thanks for what good information you provided here, Patrick McKeown (Oxygen Advantage). 👍🏼

If you want to refer to the Bible for the age of the Earth, then you could be incorrect. Cause I don’t think the Bible is a perfectly reliable source. It’s imperfect.

    • @fiery.mercaba
      @fiery.mercaba 2 роки тому

The irony of that you being named @@Adam-te9uu are questioning, nay, rather denying the Book of the Creator is not lost on me.
But, yeah, I have not the time currently to lay out several facts before your eyes to indicate to you how wrong you are about the Bible, but if ever you knew just how incorrect you are, if you truly knew, you would be so incredibly shocked.
This much else I will say to you. It is not without reason that atheistic evolutionists try so hard to discredit the Bible, & it is because their consciousness is well aware of the frauds they have constructed in the areas of geology, dendrochronology, paleontology, zoology, taxonomy, anthropology, astronomy, etc, to prop up a pretense of that their belief system is reality, all this while they know the Bible exists & unwaveringly declares concepts that are diametrically opposed to their own & that oftentimes highlights their folly as being folly.
The Bible challenges their madness & folly, it is unapologetic, & its adherents who really believe it & have experiences in interacting with it are numerous & also unapologetic. To maintain their fantastic fantasies, the evolutionists has to try to accuse the Bible of being untrue, &, all the while they raise so much resistance against, they become more & more spiritually blind & unable to see what they ought to. As it is written, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
Relatedly, as I remember this now, just recently I saw an episode of the trivia game show Jeopardy! in which they posited a clue that spoke of how that the Bible speaks about "corn" being in the Middle East when corn, as in maize, was supposedly not known to be in that geographical area back then, & I was like, "Are you serious? You all are that ignorant to say something like that?", & I just shook my head. You see "corn" in the Bible is not a reference to maize, but is an English word that simply meant "seed" or some type of "grain" back in the time of, say, the KJV Bible translators.
So there it was they were trying to use the Bible to supplement their array of questions for their television program (which I am glad they do, for I love the Bible & it exposes more people to the Bible) while at the same time belittle it, & they ended up making themselves jokes, though they don't even realize they have.
As it is written, "God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."
