They didn’t play it safe and to me that’s much more meaningful representation. Still love good omens of course, I just wish shows would stop tip toeing around queer love in general. @@Watersiteplay I mean no one really knows much about pirates of that era, lots of illiteracy among pirates and anti pirate propaganda being put out. But on the whole, yeah it's very reasonably historically accurate and not crazily less accurate than other pirate content.
Even finding each other isn't that bizarre. It's not like pirates sat around in the middle of the ocean waiting to get lucky. There were only so many places you could go for repairs and supplies, not to mention where you could be reasonably certain to find prize ships. It's how piracy worked after all. Apart from Stede's crew on the Revenge if you didn't loot you weren't getting paid and if you weren't getting paid or the supplies were close to running out mutiny would be a better choice than death. So successful captains stuck around the shipping lanes until they headed back to wherever their home base was.

I don't think I've even read a fanfic where Lucius actually died. In all of them, even the angsty ones, he's still alive. The fandom just decided 'nuh-uh, we're not doing that'. We need our boy alive.
(And anyway, he has to be alive if the writers want to bring the crew back together. There is no chance of redemption for Ed and Izzy otherwise.)
Lucius was my favourite character all along and I cried my eyes out when he died. I litally need this character to exist in season 2.

Then I heard it was about pirates, so I gave in and watched the show. And.. I expected gay but I didn't expect GAY- (Lucius was a huge help honestly.) So... Pleasantly surprised. Now obsessed with fandom. And probably gonna look at some Gay vampires next.

I’m so used to popular shows, especially stuff that isn’t anime, just leaving it implied, because they don’t want to “upset the cishet audience”. But then they like- they actually KISSED. MAN, when I tell you I was grinning like an idiot the entire time I was watching this show- like all the little ways we see them slowly start to care more and more about each other, especially when we see Ed the moments before called for an Act of Grace, he look desperate. Watching the new season and SOBBING
This is one of the fandoms where mostly everyone came for the gays. Such other fandoms that come to mind include Good Omens, The Owl House, Steven Universe, and Gentleman Jack.
Kinda sad people only like and defend a show for just that one reason and end up being the crazy toxic fans of the show most of the time never made sense to me how that happens they are within their right to do so though
@@clarencehemphill3403 It's mostly a part of being underrepresented in media and being made to feel dumb for hoping to be represented. I can confidently say that only two characters have ever made me feel any semblance of being represented, so yes, naturally I'm more likely to cling to those characters, since other characters were so obviously nothing like me that I never felt represented. I could relate to most characters, but I never saw myself in them. I try to keep a healthy distance to them, in order to not become toxic or something like that, but I can't fault other people for clinging onto every scrap of representation they can find.
David Jenkins talked about it beautifully in a few interviews, and various members of the crew behind OFMD have retweeted/posted beautiful texts written by fans who explain better what this show means to them.

I feel like he's the only normal person in a crew of clowns. Then again, he's too dramatic all of the time, he's dark, he's abusive, manipulative, but I also kinda sympathise with him because he's exhausted and suffering 24/7. He's incredibly nuanced and complex and Con O'Neil's performance is just a whole new class of acting.

I watched this show from the beginning and thought it was gonna be a fun historical pirate comedy starring my boys Rhys and Taika. When it turned into a rom-com, I literally went, “Oh this show is going to explode.”
THANK you for the Izzy Hands + Con O'neill fan reprrsentation. Izzy is a freak and people love him (in a non apologist or toxic way) and Con is just an unhinged icon.
Izzy & Con are both chaotic in different yet wonderful ways!

I honestly love the show. Usually stuff with pirates is intense gore and swashbuckling. But with these guys it’s an insane and hilarious comedy with gay pirates. It’s hilarious and I love it, the whole crew is amazing.
Also, that one time Taika Waititi retweeted a fan's heartfelt tweet of their shitpost edit saying, quote, "We made a romance, not a bromance." I love this show so damn much.
Don't forget the bit of it that are also in the Good Omens fandom, and now are both reconciling over the fact they're both waiting for a season 2.

I love how the creators of the show are in active love and support with the fan base. It's so nice to see when you're used to certain companies (especially those with a capital D involved) striking down everything fan created and sending cease and desists to kids making fan blogs or art of the characters they fell in love with. Fans engaging with the content is such a beautiful thing (not to mention it's the best advertising you could ask for) and I'm glad that David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, and the entire cast of the show are as enamored with us as we are with them.

So refreshing to have a fandom with so few drama and fan-wars ^^ But at the same time, are we really surprised?
I think the lack of drama and fan wars can be attributed to how the source material delivers in every single aspect of the story. It leaves nothing to be desired, no wasted potentials, no queerbaiting, nothing to complain about. Even that cliffhanger, that cruel cruel cliffhanger makes sense in the story, and the showrunners appear to be trustworthy, so nobody's complaining about that either.

I am completely obsessed. Love every character ( I disliked Izzy during my first watch, but after seeing more of him as an actor and on twitter, I can not help but adore him.....the actor and his brilliant hilarious acting, not what he does), love the actors in general.....I have a crush on both Rhys and Taika.....and Jim, I think. Taikas eyes and hands and arms and voice and accent make me weak. Rhys is a handsome little devil and his stand up made me laugh so hard......his vx effects bits kill me. Jim just confirms my own identity and that I am definitely pansexual. The song choices haunt me. I listen to Chains so fucking many times a day. Lucius is just ......I can not believe this is his first official acting role and I love that Taika saw his little humorous internet clips and asked him to audition. Lucius bitchyness and support and deadpan casual conedy talent are a sight to behold. The Badmintons cracked me up....as much as I hate them....great acting. Olu is just wholesome, sweet and yes, would have been the right captain placeholder choice. David Jenkins deserves an award and more recognition for creating this......I love Taika to bits but it pains me that a lotta people credit him when it should be David. I am sure Taika had influence but....I am sure you get it. And the finale killed me....I am just holding on because of the fandom, music and crack bids and fanfiction. I even read the newly popped up Viago/Anton ones....such fun. Waiting a year is gonna be.....horrendous....

Question about fandom (unrelated to Our Flag Means Death, I'm just generally curious): I'm a Special Education major. Recently we learned about an evidence based practice for helping students with autism learn and practice life and social skills called Power Cards. Basically, you come up with a behavior goal the student needs to work on like keeping their stuff together, asking for help, using polite language, sharing toys, etc. then you make them a card with a picture of their special interest and 3-4 simple steps to do the behavior goal including why that relates to the special interest. Ex: My Power Rangers books are special, so when I come to class I will put them in the special box to keep them safe until it's time to read them again; or Obi Wan Kenobi puts his lightsaber away when he's done with it, If I put my materials away when I'm done with them like Obi Wan I can always find them when I need them; or Firefighters follow directions to keep themselves and others safe and do their jobs well, I can follow directions like a firefighter. My question is, if I also like the thing my students are obsessed with, is this an extremely short and sweet fanfic or because the entire intended audience consists of one specific student does it not count?

Interestingly, the show made the characters significantly older than they actually were. Bonnet was only thirty when he died. Blackbeard was maaaybe in his late thirties when he was killed. Always find it interesting how they age pirates up. Tended to be mostly younger men in their 20s and 30s rather than 40s and 50s. You didn't generally live to be old if you were a pirate.

I watched for The Gay and I’m very much a fan of Taika Waititi, but buttons is unironically my favourite overall character.

Literally saw someone on Tumblr say, in full seriousness, "I will never watch ofmd because it's copying black sails and failing miserably at having a good plot/interesting characters" or something along those lines, without even having seen the first episode. Why do people feel that we can only have one good gay thing :'( let every thing be gay and good. No reason to argue.
