Literally me when I saw that article on Google talking about how OFMD forgets about being what makes the show "great" and that is it's pirate-ness and I was so pissed like it's a love story between two men!
I get why people are complaining about him saying when queerness “isn’t shoved in your face” since that’s the same thing that so many homophobic people say when they want to see less queer media. However, I think the point he was trying to make is more of “I didn’t want to make a show where there was the very awkward, unnatural ‘im gay and this is why it’s weird and different’ talk - i wanted to make a queer show where representation isn’t questioned for a single minute, it’s just normal.” Like he’s said that he wants queerness to be normalised SO many times
yes! exactly! I love that he made it so natural and normal and the main focus wasnt that they were gay it was that they were in love! (idk if that makes sense)
@@gorgonzola9373I used to talk a lot about this in the writing world, were people created the genre of LGBTQ books, where the conflict comes from the fact the characters are LGBTQ, were I much rather just reed (or see) a cute and really good love story between 2 people, independent of their gender
I understand it’s more real ig ? Since not everyone in this age is okay with lgbtq but I just more stories with some plot where the gay characters are happy and the biggest plot climax isnt the fact that someone’s gay and someone doenst like that
Exactly. This is the kind of stuff that makes it seem normal. I love queer shows about coming out and stuff, focused directly on the queerness, it's cool, but you'll never get anyone who isn't gay or an ally watching that. With our flag means death it's casually queer, when Mary asks "who's her name?" to Stede and he answers "Ed, his name is Ed." and she doesn't bat an eye that he said "his". When Jim's auntie calls them by a different name and Jim says that they go by Jim now she doesn't mind and just calls them Jim. That's the stuff.

@@lockwie9176 I think there's good odds he'd vastly prefer for people to just go "he hasn't said so we don't know what label goes on him, but we aren't having sex with him so it doesn't matter." As a queer histortian, what makes our flag means death so great is that not only are the characters not making a big deal of being gay, but that's how life actually was on pirate ships! The term "mates" or "mateys" comes from same sex couples on these ships! The only major inaccuracy in this regard is that those on the mainland would be very homophobic, but we see that they are still less accepting than the pirates and other sea-faring individuals. I love the show so much.
A fair few comments on here about whether he has the right to speak for queer people… so… throwing my two cents in. I don’t believe based on various comments he’s made that he identifies as straight, regardless of who he is or has been with. I myself am bisexual but have been in a het relationship for a long time. I do get a bit annoyed personally by LGBT people who question my opinions because I haven’t divulged my full relationship history and they’ve therefore assumed by sexuality based on my partner. Let’s not gatekeep queerness firstly, and secondly can we agree that anyone who is supporting LGBT representation despite the dark turn our world seems to be taking is doing good? 🖤🏳️🌈
Omg not me getting emotional seeing Taika & Keke Palmer talk about queer representation - two people who haven't had a big moment "coming out", but so clearly are in some way part of the community :')
taika put what i love so much about ofmd into perfect words. as a lesbian its cool to have media where people are coming to terms with their sexuality (since obviously i experienced that myself) but i hate that most every queer rep has that built in somewhere, or the character suffers in some way for being queer. but in ofmd, they’re gay, and they’re happy, and it just IS!!! they go through heartbreak but not because the world wants to keep them separate for being gay. it’s because stede and ed are both dumb little men (affectionate) who make mistakes like literally anyone else in relationships does
I appreciate his work so much; accept human beings & stop trying bring each other down. We are different & that’s beautiful. We have something in common, and it’s usually good food, at least one good dish. Protect each other, it’s a community we need to learn to coexist better.
I'm so glad my kids are growing up in this generation in NZ. I sailed on the lady Washington for a while and 85% of sailors, especially tall ship sailors, are queer. So calling it a “pirate show” just sounds like code for “love story between two men” to me
I’m glad he made Our Flags Means Death cause these other things he’s talking about, especially Love and Thunder, is just rubbish. Our Flags is great and expresses the heart of his normalization narrative. But love and thunder is the polar opposite; it suppresses queerness, offers it up in crumbs and meaningless bits, mostly palatable to those who wish to overlook queerness and not fully engage with it. A cheap, overdone trick. And if love and thunder were his only foray into queerness I would have called him an impish braggart, but thank goodness Our Flags means death exists.
Omg yes! I could not agree more. Disney and Marvel selling Love and Thunder as ”really gay” was so shitty of them. Like we know Valkyrie is queer but there was nothing queer about the movie. Absolutely nothing. Instead we get a straight romance once again. Like Valkyrie’s sexuality wasn’t actually present in any way, It’s not surprising knowing Disney tho. They don’t actually care about representation, just checking off boxes. They still care way too much about their conservative viewers, producers and countries they sell their movies to
Love and thunder is a blockbuster made for masses. It costs a lot of money so it has to earn a lot too. Producers dont want to risk their conservative audiences refusing to pay to see their product and thus dont give directors as much creative freedom as with projects like Our Flag Means Death. I think of it was up to Taika the representation in Love and Thunder would have been a bigger part of the movie. But sadly mainstream media is not at this point yet. Thats also kinda what Taika was saying here, that he hopes in the future he and others will be able to write various love stories casually and people will just accept it no matter the gender of the characters. Mentioning same-sex relationship in a movie is not as good of representation as showing it ofc but its still does some good for normalizing them. And doing this step will make the next one easier. Please dont just automatically blame creators, there are often more things going on in the background and a lot of limits they have to deal with because of e.g. people paying for the movie having certain rules about what they can show, especially in mainstream media.
@@Garsnoos To be fair tho, I agree with this comment. Its so sucky of disney to act like they are doing so much and to want praise for the smallest things. (Still glad we at least have got these small moments tho since its better than nothing). But I just feel bad when creators are blamed for that even tho they often want to do more but arent allowed to. We have e.g. instances like the owl house and steven universe - they got the representation but the showrunners had to fight hard to get it and also had their shows shortened bc of it. And they were not as big of a scale as blockbusters played in cinemas so there was still more flexibility than with mcu movies.

He hasn’t formally come out. I personally believe that queer people should come out on their own terms and since he isn’t out I didn’t want to speculate on his identity. He has stated “everyone is queer” in the past and he may be bi but I didn’t want to explicitly label his sexuality.
i love him but it really rubs me the wrong way when he thinks he knows whats best for queer people and when he goes on about how its great that gayness isnt "shoved in your face"
i think he's trying to communicate that, in order for equality to happen, we have to be as unfazed by a queer couple on screen as a straight couple. which in my opinion is totally a great way for queer culture to integrate into main stream culture, because if we are constantly held apart or labeled as 'the other' by everyone, there will always be a divide, and Waititi seems to be closing that gap in the way he isn't making a huge deal out of gay characters.
@@astridr4997 yeah i get that but he's skipping a step in a similar way to the "i don't see race" argument. Like no we're not there yet, we need to acknowledge our differences first
I mean he makes a point.... How represented do you feel by disney or Marvel's ham fisted money grab representation vs shows like ofmd. More and more often we're getting dissapoiting or shallow virtue signalling instead of actual representation in media. Take the lazy "queer reveal" in loki in contrast to genuine diversity in jojo rabbit
As a queer person I think he meant that’s it’s not a “coming of age thing” or a struggle or person in denial of their sexuality they’re just simply gay and I love that
It's just overexposure. He's had back-to-back major projects released these past few months and so every entertainment news outlet is using his name for clicks. Just turn off the media noise and consume his content on your own.
Go watch something different and have a break from him then. I mean having a sort of burn-out from something you love is something that happens. The best for you and everyone else is that you move on to something else instead of developing some undue hatred and end up spreading negativity.

what are these photos of taika at the end
It’s from the interview clip that I used. The original video is linked in the description
I sailed on the lady Washington for a while and 85% of sailors, especially tall ship sailors, are queer. So calling it a “pirate show” just sounds like code for “love story between two men” to me
I love him so much ❤️
Ele é muito estiloso para ser hétero. Um cara hétero não tem a capacidade de ser tão estiloso como o Taika.
@@Garsnoos
To be fair tho, I agree with this comment.
I adore this guy!!!! Fun, funny and SEXY AF
I’m pretty sure it’s older than the Greeks. They just named it, maybe
love this guy so much
What is the show where he kissed the guy dressed like Thor. Where he also smashed the eggplant. Is it a talk show?

Taika made some insanely transphobic comments on tweeter back then.
I fucking LOVE OFMD. ❤️🏴☠️🧜♂️🧜♂️
“Ally…” the man’s literally bi
He hasn’t formally come out. I personally believe that queer people should come out on their own terms and since he isn’t out I didn’t want to speculate on his identity. He has stated “everyone is queer” in the past and he may be bi but I didn’t want to explicitly label his sexuality.
шикарен.
There is something very suspect about this man
I think so too hehe
i love him but it really rubs me the wrong way when he thinks he knows whats best for queer people and when he goes on about how its great that gayness isnt "shoved in your face"
i think he's trying to communicate that, in order for equality to happen, we have to be as unfazed by a queer couple on screen as a straight couple. which in my opinion is totally a great way for queer culture to integrate into main stream culture, because if we are constantly held apart or labeled as 'the other' by everyone, there will always be a divide, and Waititi seems to be closing that gap in the way he isn't making a huge deal out of gay characters.
@@astridr4997 yeah i get that but he's skipping a step in a similar way to the "i don't see race" argument. Like no we're not there yet, we need to acknowledge our differences first
Then let’s not assume he knows what’s best. He’s just trying to be a good ally in his own way
I mean he makes a point....
As a queer person I think he meant that’s it’s not a “coming of age thing” or a struggle or person in denial of their sexuality they’re just simply gay and I love that
Too bad Taika isn't a comic-book movie icon and isn't Thorfan+ ally.
I'll be happy if he stops butchering Thor movies. Other than that he's great
Why has this man pissed me off sm lately
I used to love everything he did
Damn, he did one bad film and suddenly everyone hate him...
It's just overexposure. He's had back-to-back major projects released these past few months and so every entertainment news outlet is using his name for clicks. Just turn off the media noise and consume his content on your own.
I had same experience with RDJ, they're just humans and get tired and we also get tired when they're everywhere, it's OK to pause and not to obsess
Go watch something different and have a break from him then.
I mean having a sort of burn-out from something you love is something that happens. The best for you and everyone else is that you move on to something else instead of developing some undue hatred and end up spreading negativity.
@@lockwie9176 too late

Jojo Rabbit was still a crime tho.
By manipulating Kate Bush's popularity for himself? Oh yes sounds like what a gay icon would do tssssss
Lol chill dude. Stop being so miserable. Just be chill and spread good vibrations instead!!! 🥰❤️😘
I fully don't understand this comment
@@Malpractice101 She was all the headlines while he wanted the spotlight. Any Kate fan isn't going to claim some nonsense he came up with to latch on to that. A Kate fan would be extremely thrilled she's finally being recognized in the US because they know she's as important as any of the top tier performers Americans hold dear. So he is just trying to lasso the spotlight for his project, and should be called out for it. That's all.
@@CHAD-fr4hh let people get away with acting like a-holes just because you need to keep the day as shallow as possible? No.
Need to work on being a het icon first by not cheating on his pregnant wife with his personal assistant and supporting wifebeaters like depp and fassbender lol
when did he cheat on his wife? and when did he support those people? like did he say it on twitter or something
@@yoongitrash2699 He cast Fassbender for his soccer movie he shot in 2019, but the other stuff I'm like 99% sure is made up just to bash him. Like how would this rando on YT know whether he cheated or not, lol. Personally I've not heard of wifebeater allegations against Fassbender & Depp just won a court case regarding those allegations, so..
i need context-
@@soupwantstosleep context: this person made it up.
When did he cheat on his wife? Johnny depp isn’t a wifebeater lmfao and he has never said he supported fassbender he was in 1 movie he made. He made 1 movie you dislike and you decide to spread lies about him? What the hell
He's not gay
He is an Ally
Pretty sure he called himself queer
either way he's a gay icon w/o being gay; going extra measure to celebrate the community will be celebrated into the community too💁♀️✨
@@augustinemonet1935yep, he did. He also said he's attracted to both men and women but doesn't want to label himself
Happy to enjoy anything Taika does . Unfortunately he expects me to accept his world view that 2 men kissing is that interesting.
It would be interesting for him to come up with an lgbtqi oriented movie from a hetero gaze. Like what is “straight camp”
