I love your videos. I've learned so much from your channel. Bees are amazing and we need them to survive. I'm grateful there are people like you out there taking care of them & educated people on them. Most people just want them dead. I'm highly allergic and carry an epi-pen but I want them left alone around my house. They are around the side of my house. I just let them be. That's their part of the yard and they can have it. Not everything has to be destroyed. Now spiders & snakes, they have to go. 😆 I know snakes have their purpose too. As long as they stay away from my house and don't harm anyone I'm ok, for the most part. Spiders not so much. Got bit by one. An 15 mintues after getting bit, I started feeling really awful. Arm started swell soon after. Within an hour I was physically sick. I went to bed feeling like I was going to die. The heat coming off my arm was like 3rd degrees burns. By 10 or so hour I woke up to my arm being about 3 & half times larger. And abcess had formed sometime during the night. It was 6inches long and it went almost all the way around my arm. It had gotten so big or I had moved wrong that it burst open. It was the worst smell I've ever smelled and pus was everywhere. After seeing a doctor & having it drained, it took forever to heal. That was over 20 years ago. If you press the skin where it was, there's probably still a 2 inch indent in my arm, maybe deeper. It still tender at time. I apologize for the long spill. Thank you for your videos.
Those plastic weirdness frames are part of the reason I quit using plastic foundation. I had better luck with foundationless and starter strips. I think they're easier to fix when they get a little wonky and a lot less effort than full sheets of wired foundation.
That dog reminds me of our dog we had. When we gave the dog a special treat, the dog gave us something back all the time, but mostly mice. That dog was a better mouse catcher than our cats. That one day my wife dropped a cake and gave it to the dog. After that the dog was gone and gone then finally came back a 1/2 day later to bring us a beaver as a thank you.
We had an Australian Shepherd hat always brought presents home. We lived in back of a Tom Thumb. She brought home bread, cooked chickens, raw meat of all kinds, cinnamon rolls. When desperate, empty cans, but always something. A nomad tribe would have honored her throughout her life!
I've been fascinated with beekeeping for a while and I love your channel! I love your gentle nature and compassion towards your bees. Really fun to watch and I feel so full of bee knowledge after a binge on your channel for a day!
I apologize for what could be a dumb question, but I was under the assumption that you can't introduce a queen into a different hive, that they will reject the queen. You mentioned having to find a queen for one of the boxes, what is the process for doing so?
I wish i could make videos, to show every one how to use baling wire around the frames, to hold comb in > it don't pop and its REUSABLE too! much more easier than rubber bands, cheaper and safer too if they do make comb over it, it pulls threw it or out of it easy

They take her out before the new queen emerges as far as I can tell. Any time I find emergency cells I've never been able to find a queen in the hive. That was a nice build on that lid wasn't it?
I find all this fascinating sumink ud never see in normal days of your life! How u know what's a queen cell ? Love ur removals as well keep up the good work
I've noticed something about washboarding on a couple of packages I installed this spring. The bees built comb great and the queens started laying at about day 7, but even though there were bee hangout on the landing board the whole they never polished the boxes until they started capping brood. The cappings had fiber material in them even though these were new colonies placed with no resources. I think the washboarding is a way to gather capping material.
Like that yellow gripper tool you use to lift the frames out of the boxes. Interesting that the bees know to get rid of a queen who doesn't lay many eggs. I always learn something new from your videos.
I just want to say I love that your dobe has a shorter working dog crop instead of that ridiculously long show crop. If I ever have a dobe, I'm going to have the dog cropped in that working dog style, and not the show style, and then go to shows with that, and watch people have conniption fits, because of the crop, lol.
The funny thing is that some dogs don't learn. No number of stings is enough to make them stop hanging around hives. They're kinda like beekeepers that way. Like owner, like dog. 😃

With and unlimited bee supply this one doesn't know when to quit. I have to distract him with a ball or something or he'll chase them for a half hour or longer.
I have did several cut out and put comb in with rubber bands and have always wonder what happens with the bands break inside the hives and how the bees act when it happens.
My Mom had a bee chompin' dog like that when I moved back home with her after a divorce to help her live out the last 3 years of her life, she didn't want us kids to send her to a home to live her days out and here dementia made it hard in the end but with the help of my sister for the last year we made it happen. I didn't have to be there, I had a good paying job. Anyway, that dog would chomp on any bee it could get at within a 150 Ft cable run it was on while it was outside! I could tell when he got stung in the mouth but, it didn't deter him. There wasn't a bee on clover within his reach that was safe, I never understood why he did it. Maybe he got something from the bees we don't understand, bet we never will.
It's the thrill of the chase for some of them. We had a doberman that used to chase bees. I had to sell him after he killed all the neighbor's chickens. He didn't tear them up, just chased them down and killed every last one.
DR, I did a walkaway split with someone in April . They must have had the queen because this hive has no eggs and is quickly losing members. I have a strong hive and would like to get this hive back in action. I would like to do a 5 frame nuc. Is it too much to take from one hive? I don't want to ruin both of them. Your thoughts?
Yeah, its double stacked. What the hell, I'll give it a try. Always hesitant because I don't want to screw it up, but got to start doing it. Also , one last question, how are you dealing with the mites. When do you test and how often?
guitarfend I don't test. If I see any I do a sugar shake. For some reason we have very little trouble with them in our area. If you do a walk away split and it's unsuccessful then just merge the bees back into the original hive. I have a couple of videos on merging colonies.
at the 6:30 time mark there is a feeder. do you leave that in year round, or do you pull it and add a new frame? love your videos. keep up the good work.
Yah! They're killers! Mine was really good at killing June bug larva. They give me the creeps and Meats was really good at taking care of any kind of bug that bothered me. Really miss that old dog. Need to find me another.
I hate to say this. but the rubber bands is a time bomb tic tac tic tac as they POP, could kill a queen and bees i use baling wire warp around the frame to hold comb in, but have to take it out when the comb is glue to the frames I see your ready to stack some more brood boxes, we watch your blogs and enjoy them Cheers
Ha! Yes they are. I've used all kinds of other methods but it's just a pain to try and get chicken wire or plastic netting out of the comb after they attach everything. I'll have to show the cut-out frames I built a long time ago.
thin bailing wire and wire the comb in around the frame like a W all you do is bend each end wire over the top and bottom frame and if they do make comb into it its easy to pull it out. I kept a bunch cut about 1' and 2' long pieces balling wire! ITS CHEAPER TOO THAN RUBBER BANDS and IT DON'T POP and REUSABLE! Cheers bro
I saw something about laying workers. Supposedly they lay several unfertilized eggs to a cell. How did you know it was a queen problem and not that the workers were laying instead?
I've been wondering whether a queen made from eggs laid from a bad queen would make a good queen. My bees seem to only like to make comb in 2 boxes. I'm thinking of trying to get them to make more comb etc by trying the Rose Hive method. I read someplace that wash boarding meant the bees had nothing productive to do. I've seen mine do that and did nothing about it. I think when I see it again I'll add empty frames to the hive or do something else so they'll have some work to do.
Funny that I never thought about experimenting with them while they were doing that. I'm not sure why they would have nothing to do since that box was not overloaded. I wonder if it may be genetics of the queen. Every year I have a few boxes that washboard a lot. Most rarely do. I think this summer I'll pick the worst one and requeen with a laying queen and swap out the brood with another hive and see what happens in the next few weeks after. Maybe I track wash boarding hives and see if I can come up with a theory. I'll be watching as you beat me to figuring out the mystery. I checkerboard most of the time when I add boxes or move up from nucs. Usually I only do it to try and get them to draw out frames that have brand new foundations.
Re-queening is a good idea. Or just let that hive stay queen less for a week to see if they stop wash boarding while trying to make a new queen. If its the queen and her genetics - rather than pinching the queen from the wash boarding hive - instead put her in a new hive with frames of bees from 2 or 3 hives and see if she has a lot of bees wash boarding the next season. That's a lot of trouble, but you'll end up with one more hive than if you pinch the queen in the wash boarding hive. There's probably half dozen or more ways to experiment and see what you might do to find a theory. You'll be better at figuring out that mystery than me. I have a wide and 2 daughters. I haven't figured them out yet, so I'm pretty sure I can't figure out 20,000 females. If I can manage to remember - I'll probably checker board this year. I saw a queen rearing video by Billy Davis telling how his bee club raises queens. They put in a dry, but fully drawn frame in the breeder hive once a week for the breed queen to lay into. They take the eggs from that frame to make queens.
Some people around here use terramycin or Mite Away Quick Strips. I've never used any type of mite control and fortunately for us the climate around here somehow keeps them down naturally. I've only ever seen two mites in all my hives and I think they came from a commercial yard I got some bees from one time. Thanks for watching.
A queen cell is for making a new queen. All fertilized eggs are female and any egg can be turned into a queen but they have to be in a special cell due to their size, what they eat and the ability for the first born queen (there is always more then one cell) to kill the others.
Umm I am a new beekeeper and I was wondering why do you have rubber bands there in the first place?. Is there a link to another video you could send me please?
I have only two hives with the same issue. I've already pulled the queen. Should I pull a frame from my other hive that has eggs or go ahead and find another queen? Enjoy the videos
Depends on how much brood is in the hive. If there's still a good amount of brood I'd just add a frame with eggs. If pretty much everything has emerged I'd add a laying queen if I could find one. Good luck with them.
Between my two hives brood count is about the same so for whatever reason something went bad with queen#2. Her laying was sporadic with no pattern. Seemed like she was moving across the board on every frame but miss laying. How long should I wait to add a frame of eggs to get better chance of getting a queen cell
I always have been afraid of bees. I don't know why. The pain doesn't hurt from a sting. Could you tell me a way that you stopped feeling the pain or afraid from bees?
Just from experience. I was jumpy too when I started. You just have to spend time with them. Once you learn how to handle them and how to act and react you can relax and enjoy your hobby. I can deal with it if all there is is a little minor burning sting. The worst part is the itching the next day.

Washboarding is when they gather on the outside of the box and walk back and forth in place line they are line dancing or something. They seem to be kind of licking the box while they do this.
It's possible that they actually are cleaning the outside of the boxes to try and hide it's smell from potential robbers. They tend to washboard when? (Dearth)
Dragonflies are chasing and eating my girls. There is a wetland beside our property and this is where the Dragonflies are coming from. This is also where the girls go to drink. Is there anything I can do to stop the Dragonflies from eating my bees?
There is nothing that will stop them but you can do some things to help control their population long term. Stock the wetland with fish that eat the dragonfly nymphs if it will support fish life; and place toad houses around your property. For some reason tadpoles have a negative effect on dragonfly nymphs. Hopefully they aren't eating enough to hurt the strength of your hives. Good luck.
If they aren't taking to the new frames you can mix the frames up. I'll usually put two or three brood frames up into the new box and intermingle the new frames in the old box. You can also put your new box on the bottom and they will start working it faster since they have to travel through it as they come and go.
isnt washboarding just simply what they do with a wild nest? they not all inside the nest in wild some bees go on the outside guarding maybe its the same for the box? just a thought.

My idea is washboarding may be caused by warm weather. Too hot in the hive with everyone in there. Cool breezes outside

The queen cells hang vertical. All worker and drone cells are horizontal. Thanks for watching.

All brood cappings are a fibrous. I'm not sure what all is in them but they are definitely different that caps over honey.
Yep, I just made the observation that they didn't washboard until they needed to find fiber for the brood caps.

I notice some of your frames appear to have the black plastic foundation, how do you like them?

Depends on the strength of the hive. Five frames isn't much if you've got a double or triple stacked set of ten frame deeps.

What happens when two queens end up in the same box? Also it was kool to see the stick bugs.
One queen will usually kill the other from my understanding.

My bees seem to only like to make comb in 2 boxes. I'm thinking of trying to get them to make more comb etc by trying the Rose Hive method.
I read someplace that wash boarding meant the bees had nothing productive to do. I've seen mine do that and did nothing about it. I think when I see it again I'll add empty frames to the hive or do something else so they'll have some work to do.
Funny that I never thought about experimenting with them while they were doing that. I'm not sure why they would have nothing to do since that box was not overloaded. I wonder if it may be genetics of the queen. Every year I have a few boxes that washboard a lot. Most rarely do. I think this summer I'll pick the worst one and requeen with a laying queen and swap out the brood with another hive and see what happens in the next few weeks after. Maybe I track wash boarding hives and see if I can come up with a theory. I'll be watching as you beat me to figuring out the mystery.
I checkerboard most of the time when I add boxes or move up from nucs. Usually I only do it to try and get them to draw out frames that have brand new foundations.
Re-queening is a good idea. Or just let that hive stay queen less for a week to see if they stop wash boarding while trying to make a new queen.
If its the queen and her genetics - rather than pinching the queen from the wash boarding hive - instead put her in a new hive with frames of bees from 2 or 3 hives and see if she has a lot of bees wash boarding the next season. That's a lot of trouble, but you'll end up with one more hive than if you pinch the queen in the wash boarding hive.
There's probably half dozen or more ways to experiment and see what you might do to find a theory. You'll be better at figuring out that mystery than me. I have a wide and 2 daughters. I haven't figured them out yet, so I'm pretty sure I can't figure out 20,000 females.
If I can manage to remember - I'll probably checker board this year. I saw a queen rearing video by Billy Davis telling how his bee club raises queens. They put in a dry, but fully drawn frame in the breeder hive once a week for the breed queen to lay into. They take the eggs from that frame to make queens.
See, I told you you'd figure it out first. You already have more ideas than me.

Some people around here use terramycin or Mite Away Quick Strips. I've never used any type of mite control and fortunately for us the climate around here somehow keeps them down naturally. I've only ever seen two mites in all my hives and I think they came from a commercial yard I got some bees from one time. Thanks for watching.

Depends on a lot of factors like strength of the hive, time of year, why she died or left.....

What is a queen cell? what is a queen cell for?
A queen cell is for making a new queen. All fertilized eggs are female and any egg can be turned into a queen but they have to be in a special cell due to their size, what they eat and the ability for the first born queen (there is always more then one cell) to kill the others.

I have only two hives with the same issue. I've already pulled the queen. Should I pull a frame from my other hive that has eggs or go ahead and find another queen? Enjoy the videos
Depends on how much brood is in the hive. If there's still a good amount of brood I'd just add a frame with eggs. If pretty much everything has emerged I'd add a laying queen if I could find one. Good luck with them.
Between my two hives brood count is about the same so for whatever reason something went bad with queen#2. Her laying was sporadic with no pattern. Seemed like she was moving across the board on every frame but miss laying. How long should I wait to add a frame of eggs to get better chance of getting a queen cell

I always have been afraid of bees. I don't know why. The pain doesn't hurt from a sting. Could you tell me a way that you stopped feeling the pain or afraid from bees?
Just from experience. I was jumpy too when I started. You just have to spend time with them. Once you learn how to handle them and how to act and react you can relax and enjoy your hobby. I can deal with it if all there is is a little minor burning sting. The worst part is the itching the next day.

laying worker is when you dont have a queen and they are laying drones in worker cells
So if the drones don't like the queen they replace her?
The workers make that decision. The drones like all of them as long as they can fly.

Washboarding is when they gather on the outside of the box and walk back and forth in place line they are line dancing or something. They seem to be kind of licking the box while they do this.

It's possible that they actually are cleaning the outside of the boxes to try and hide it's smell from potential robbers. They tend to washboard when? (Dearth)
What is the maximum number of colonies you have in your yards?
Dragonflies are chasing and eating my girls. There is a wetland beside our property and this is where the Dragonflies are coming from. This is also where the girls go to drink. Is there anything I can do to stop the Dragonflies from eating my bees?
There is nothing that will stop them but you can do some things to help control their population long term. Stock the wetland with fish that eat the dragonfly nymphs if it will support fish life; and place toad houses around your property. For some reason tadpoles have a negative effect on dragonfly nymphs. Hopefully they aren't eating enough to hurt the strength of your hives. Good luck.
how do you get bees to move into top brood box.
If they aren't taking to the new frames you can mix the frames up. I'll usually put two or three brood frames up into the new box and intermingle the new frames in the old box. You can also put your new box on the bottom and they will start working it faster since they have to travel through it as they come and go.

isnt washboarding just simply what they do with a wild nest? they not all inside the nest in wild some bees go on the outside guarding maybe its the same for the box? just a thought.
+Julian john Washboarding is just when they rock back and forth licking on the surface they are standing on. No one knows why they do it.
