    I found a gimpy queen and moved her to try and get more use out of her before she was killed by her colony.

    I like that you said, "They know better than I do." I see so many beekeepers who obsess over mashing every queen cell they see. Seems to make sense to let the colony re-queen if they feel the need.

    I know you posted this a long time ago, so I apoligize if you already know or have seen this. Netflix just added a show, Hive Alive. In the second episode at about minute 16:45 they're talking about a worker "trembling" sending a message to the other workers that they need more nectar receivers. Maybe that's what your worker girl is twerking about at the end of your video?? Thanks for all the time you take to film and edit your videos, they're fun to watch!!

    Good stuff. Q: what triggers the hive to go against a living Queen, even one with a slight limp? Is there a class/type/number of (special / 'decider' / anarchist (lol)) bee(s) that get together and decide it's time for a change? The Q in the vid was by all accounts a good layer, and therefore, surely, a good Queen.
    Most interesting. Thanks for sharing.

      Could be that they get worried it might be something genetic and the bees go paranoid with the thought that from now on all babies will have a useless leg which surely will bring down production.

    Its amazing how these small creatures work together. If they find the queen isnt work with the group. And all of them make the agreement she has to go. Its crazy. I could litterly watch these little girls work all day. Actual human woman 2 have trouble coming to a agreement. Muchless thousands of them coming together on one agreement

    Hello all,
    Being quite new in beekeeping, I was wondering if someone could answer this question:
    I am told that the bees are the ones "deciding" when to build queen cells. If this is the case, does the queen willingly lay in these cells ?
    Thanks for your answers.

      If a queen acted selfishly like that, it would make a weaker hive, which ironically would make her dna less likely to carry on. So evolution works to prevent that. It doesn’t actually “work” of course, but that behavior gets not passed on as successfully

    How does pesticides sprayed onto planted fields near your property affect your decision to keep bees there?

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 років тому +1

      +teknonut1946 We don't have crops around us but I would want to know when and what they were spraying. The crops may not be anything the bees are attracted to.

    • @teknonut1946
      @teknonut1946 8 років тому

      +628DirtRooster After watching your videos and others I've decided to give it a try. To the n. w. and the s.e. of my 3 acre residential property are maybe 1-200 acres of fields that are usually planted in soy or corn. With out tracking down the owners of the big coop farm operation to find out what they are spraying. I'm not an expert but I'm sure corn and soy are tended by bees for pollination. Should I give up hope or is there a distance to how far the bees will travel to seek pollen and nectar. If so I could set my hives up far enough away to not be contaminated by the spray. I have a spot maybe 2-3 miles away I could set the hives, would that be far enough?

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  8 років тому +1

      teknonut1946 They travel that far sometimes to forage but if they find something (food source) closer to the hive they won't bypass it to get to a field of soy beans. You may be safe like that. Or you could keep them at your place and just relocate during the times the crops are being sprayed. Also I'm not sure at what point these crops are sprayed but the bees will only be attracted to them when there are blooms on them.

    • @teknonut1946
      @teknonut1946 8 років тому +1

    Why did you remove their frame of honey instead of moving it to the edge of the brood? Surely they will need that for the winter? Maybe you don't have winter there!

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  10 років тому

      Our winters are so bad we have to wear long pants. LOL We really have pretty mild winters but the reason I took it out is that we will have a honey flow here again in a couple of weeks from golden rod and that will get them most of the way through winter. Our winters are so mild that the bees fly a lot and we still end up having to feed them some to get through to spring.

    • @constantgardener823
      @constantgardener823 10 років тому

      628DirtRooster I have to leave 15kg (33lbs) of honey in each hive to see the bees through the winter. I only take any surplus out when I do the spring visit and later use that to give new colonies some stores to start them off. I would normally only feed over-wintered colonies in a real emergency, in March or April. It is at that moment, when the colony is growing really fast, that they risk running out of stores, - especially if the weather is bad.
