I live and work in the Lakes, it can be challenging getting around in the summer holidays, but it’s a lovely place for people to visit. Glad you enjoyed it.
I was born and have lived in the Lakes all my life, retired now. Thankfully I don't live in among the crazy touristy areas, and quite honestly, I just avoid them like the plague. When I want my Lake District "fix", I head for one of the villages or areas away from the tourist trail..... One village in particular I often visit, was a favourite of the famous Lakeland Guidebook writer, Alfred Wainwright. He almost bought a house there before eventually settling for a bungalow just outside Kendal, where he worked as the Local Council's Treasurer at that time.... It's a lovely village too, with a pub, a church, a nice little cafe, a chocolate factory, a vilage store, and a farmer's market every Month.
My uncle and aunt live round here, they have a boat n alsorts, its super posh. Can understand how it might not be for some people. Best time to visit is when the school holidays are not on x
Agree re Grasmere. Good walk(s) from Ambleside and a pint in Grasmere at Tweedies (pub round back) then walk or bus back is best way to see Grasmere. Assume you've tried Keswick. The Bank pub does ace food and beer. Sure you can park van at bottom end of village also...... keep the honest reviews up.
Another great video, your best work is when you are both in the pub! Followed by a long scenic walk the next day. You compliment each other so well! Keep the videos coming.
I crave getting out in my van and having a few pub crawls after watching this. Going off up to N. Yorks coast in October. Your vids have given me some ideas. Missing the North. Down to earth and crap weather. Gotta love the coast in a storm. The drama of it. Improves the chips after and the cosy pints. Keep the vids coming.
Loved how you did the music for Helen walking down the path... You timed it perfect... Drone shots were brilliant.... You two together funny as ever 😂 brilliant... Xx
If you ever come down south to Plymouth, let me know! I have an amazing place right by the river that you can park for free, it’s a hidden gem and NO ONE knows it, so it’s always empty and beautiful! great videos ❤
Oh James, it really wasn’t for you was it. At least you can console yourself with an expensive pint in a pub. I was shocked at the price, not being a drinker myself. Never mind - that’s life and you show it in all its glory. Another very watchable video for us. 💕💕💕

There is a beautiful place up the west Cumbrian coast called Silloth. Its a place you would love especially in the summer. Its never busy but has great scenery and history. You can almost throw a stone over to Scotland it's that close. Has a victorian feel to it. Parking is not an issue. Their is an old ww2 airfield close by that used Wellington bombers and American bombers probably because of its out of the way location away from the main bombing sites. It's a beautiful not often travelled part of England North of Maryport. Its a perfect quiet route and in summer the sunsets are Mediterranean like. I've cycled from the border twice down that coastline and it is a living picture of beautiful scenery.
Stayed in the swan for a couple of nights out of season it was lovely about 5yrs ago it was busy ..and the food was top notch . Excellent guys as usual..👍🏼
I love going on here and seeing you have posted a new vlog James, because it's like opening a present which I know is going to be exciting and enjoyable. As always it was exciting and enjoyable, thank you. I also love Helen's saying... "If in doubt, drink a stout." I am going to remember that saying, because I too drink stout. As far as parking is concerned go to the garden centre car park in the centre of Grasmere. Enter the garden centre from the car park entrance and browse inside of course if you want to, otherwise walk straight through and out the front entrance to roam the village.
Absolutely love Grasmere Gingerbread well done James and Helen putting these lovely little places on the map with your wonderful touch of humour. Would so love to bump into your both one day 😊
I think they are absolutely my favourite UA-camrs whenever you’re feeling down you just need to watch these two I find them hilarious. Cheers me up no end
We have just had a break in Wensleydale, Hawes was quite quiet as it was just before the schools finished for the holidays. Things aren’t so expensive there either. I’d spend my time exploring and walking between pubs but my other half isn’t a fan of walking a great distance. I love the lakes, been to Ambleside and Windermere around Christmas as well as summer breaks and it’s a lot busier and hectic, prices suit the wealthy discerning tourists. Always good to come home to our own pub and a decent pint though.
Hawes quite quiet? You obviously didn't go on a Tuesday - market day........ When in Hawes, a visit to the Creamery (cheese factory) is a must. Lots of places to get good grub. I recommend the steak pie & chips at the Chippie just down from the public loos, or the cafe up the stairs, right next door to the Spar shop - lots of choice on the menu there. It'll take you 10 minutes to decide what to have! My fave there is the cheese & onion quiche, served with red onion chutney. Really nice! And if you're in Hawes, you are just 20 minutes or so from Askrigg, where the original 1970's series of All Creatures Great & Small was filmed.... Askrigg is a really charming village, and is well worth a stop-off. The food at the Crown Inn at Askrigg is off the scale!! Their steak pie could win an award.....The sign over the bar is worth a mention. it says "We will not judge you on race, skin colour, size, height, weight, sexual orientation or religion. We will base our judgement entirely on whether or not you are a tw@t"..... That's Yorkshire humour for you.
Well me and Maggie stayed at grasmere for a week many years ago nice place and know watering holes we stayed in the dove Cote and found the Travellers rest pub down the road and a few were had to sum it yes a beautiful place but we will not be rushing back
Haha we did the same in our motorhome at 10am and not a parking space to be found , after driving around the lakes for 2 hours we abandoned it and drove to the Yorkshire Dales instead ....the lake district is like a theme park nowadays and we were there in the Autumn midweek .
The lakes are great to drive through but I wouldn't stop it's just too busy and the price of everything makes you feel like you are been ripped off.... The roads are really dangerous... Every one seems to be driving too fast for the small roads and it always raining like Scotland...
At least you walked more than 10 yards which is more than most do, unless they are walking from one gift shop to another. Come on Helen, you should have got Mr Grumpy up on the Hill.
That's Nowt! It's practically empty compared to when I went in July. July was full of coach parties of school kids hundreds of them. Also because there was a nationwide £2 per bus journey regardless of the milage the lakes where packed. You wouldn't have liked it if you think it's busy in your vid.
Just found your channel how did I guess you were from Rotherham before you even mentioned New Broom nice to to have a Yorkshire UA-camr proper folk who like a beer and pasties. I unfortunately live in Mansfield now for my sins they don’t half talk funny round here 😂
This place is beautiful. All my ancestors have been in the States before 1800 yet the "spit companies" tell me I'm from Merseyside, and Southwest Scotland. This Lake District is the center of all that. This place belongs to England but I would love to see it one day.
Beers come in daft packaging now , I dropped mine in the kitchen and youd think the house was on fire trying to save a can of lager , great video as always guys, keep safe
God you two are literally me and my husband, 😂 have you been to hawes, we went sat for one night in van, lovely drive upt dale and 4 pubs I think, bit expensive tho, for 🍻 plus there is the cheese factory, gromit😂 and gorgeous walks, maybe even a cold swim at Wainwath falls, that would be funny Thanks for your great vlogs, take care both of you
Long time viewer 1st time subscriber 👍. Is it Sam reed or Sam red that established the bookshop? Congrats for doing what many don't have the bollocks to do, hope it's working out well. 😁
It's Sam Read. I don't know how long it's been Sam Read's. I have an old postcard and on that it's called 'Ye Olde Bookshoppe" ( if I remember rightly) and it was already a bookshop in 1961 when I went to school in Grasmere. Hasn't changed that much since then, Grasmere has.

Visited the lake district a few times from Scotland and really love it but have to agree so very busy
You're right. Too many people!!
The lakes are great to drive through but I wouldn't stop it's just too busy and the price of everything makes you feel like you are been ripped off.... The roads are really dangerous... Every one seems to be driving too fast for the small roads and it always raining like Scotland...
It's not *always* raining. It only rains on days ending in AY. And it's not the roads that are dangerous, it's people....
you came to the pub i work in i hope you enjoyed it i must have been on my hols
Helen could be my drinking buddy as i love Guinness too! Loving your videos James
I do that Helen 😂 please please let there be a parking space 🙏🏻😂 where as my husband just moans and groans and swears like a trooper 😂😂
😂😂
Great video , your banter between each other is great in your ups and downs of visiting , eating and spilling around the Lake District
Thank you!
James you need to chill Helen enjoys learning new things I wondered what Helen wished Helen is brilliant ❤❤❤ and you are too James xxxxx
She wished for a different boyfriend I think!!
@@bythecurb 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I don't think so
At least you walked more than 10 yards which is more than most do, unless they are walking from one gift shop to another. Come on Helen, you should have got Mr Grumpy up on the Hill.
Mark II Escort mate. Was looking on the back to see if it had the old "Mexico" logo, but nah. Great vid as always guys. 😁
Thank you
RS2000, can tell by the slopping front end. Prices gone through the roof for these, only 10000 produced.
@@iainferguson764 Yeah both the RS's & Mexico's were a real hit back in the day. Even today, they still pull in the buyers.
was last in the jigsaw shop 5 days before lockdown started, thank goodness I bought half the shop
They are very popular in that area, my mum loves jigsaws
Hahahaha!! 18;18 mins in...Fella with the outfit n pink brolly, lookin at you like ?? No self awareness what so ever!! Laughed my head off🤣
Couldn't agree more...., get back to Bridlington! Love you both xx
Im going for a whole week, next week. I'll make a vlog. I love Brid
That's Nowt! It's practically empty compared to when I went in July. July was full of coach parties of school kids hundreds of them. Also because there was a nationwide £2 per bus journey regardless of the milage the lakes where packed. You wouldn't have liked it if you think it's busy in your vid.
One of the very few pluses of living in London nothing is expensive by comparison especially a pint.
The most beautiful place in the world in hills away from people
Just found your channel how did I guess you were from Rotherham before you even mentioned New Broom nice to to have a Yorkshire UA-camr proper folk who like a beer and pasties. I unfortunately live in Mansfield now for my sins they don’t half talk funny round here 😂
I feel your pain, I once lived in Leeds!!! 😂
Again an amazing video, just I have question can you suggest some scenic destination for 3 days in the UK, must have camping facility please
So many lovely places, we loved Northumberland, Yorkshire Dales near Masham and the Peaks
😂 Gotta save the beer!!
eyupthehills are alive with the sound of Guinness ❤
Yes James .
"Hell is other people ".
You two are great genuine people I love you both
Thank you
I just missed you we called in Grasmere Monday evening when everyone had left. Would have bought you both a beer if I’d seen you
Oh now you tell us!! 😂
God you two are literally me and my husband, 😂 have you been to hawes, we went sat for one night in van, lovely drive upt dale and 4 pubs I think, bit expensive tho, for 🍻
plus there is the cheese factory, gromit😂 and gorgeous walks, maybe even a cold swim at Wainwath falls, that would be funny
Thanks for your great vlogs, take care both of you
Thank you, we plan to visit Hawes soon
Bridlington has been absolutely heaving today mate not seen it this busy in years.
I'll be there next week for a full week. Looking forward to it
Hi Guys ggreat video! i did a wild camp up at easdale tarn it was great! BUT, Lakes apart from that very expensive! shame they have to rip people off
Never do the Lakes Anymore ,Too many Tourists ,Thro the Country needs them too spend ,But the Prices are raised by us Brits ,Prefer Northumberland.
It has been spoilt by the sheer amount of tourism. So many places spoiled now Whitby etc. The Instagram thing hasn't helped matters
@@fidgetspinner343 True, I used to love Whitby but its too busy and expensive!
So you're not a tourist yourself then?
Don't bother with the cotswolds, just the same
We live locally to Keswick and avoid the rest of the lakes as much as possible between March and October. I love Dumfries and Galloway coast
IF IN DOUBT
DRINK A STOUT !!!!
ABSOLUTELY 💯 👌👌👌
Long time viewer 1st time subscriber 👍. Is it Sam reed or Sam red that established the bookshop? Congrats for doing what many don't have the bollocks to do, hope it's working out well. 😁
It's Sam Read.
I don't know how long it's been Sam Read's. I have an old postcard and on that it's called 'Ye Olde Bookshoppe" ( if I remember rightly) and it was already a bookshop in 1961 when I went to school in Grasmere. Hasn't changed that much since then, Grasmere has.
Through the garden, I was feeling your pain. 😅
James bit half crust half filling bit, a true gent.
That's a Wordsworthian sky. Great vid.
Love the videos guys , but those pasties look heartburn material . Hope you enjoyed them . 👍
Can't park and around and around....Been there, done that, Got the tee shirt. Bus is cheap from Bowness up to Buttermere though as an alternative
