Back in 2003, I spent 2 months in England and Scotland, and spent time in Keswick. I ate at the Dog and Gun Pub on a rainy and chilly Sunday evening, just in time for the traditional and very delicious roast beef dinner. There was a huge, roaring fireplace and big tables full of happy diners. For dessert, I tried the famous Kendle Mint Cake which was gloriously minty and refreshing. I then sauntered back to my B&B, where I slept like a log under a warm goose down comforter, serenaded by the many sheep who roam the streets at night. Keswick was great fun!

E Mack Ah, the bad British food myth was started by American GIs stationed here in WW2. I really enjoyed this....and I'm from Durham. Funnily enough just returned from a few days away in the Lake District which is, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Definitely a crown jewel of England.
The reason I love the landscapes in Britain so much is because they are not high. There comes a point with mountains where the scale is too big for the human eye so you don't take it as much as smaller scenes. You feel swamped instead of connected. The Scottish Highlands etc are just right. I also love the variety. Scotland is wild and awe-inspiring and England is luscious and romantic. Each have a purpose.

Nana kee , London looks like Thailand now, and Turkey, Pakistan, Israel, china good luck with your visit to everyone's capital, all the born Londoners are slowly moving out to the countryside, being squeezed out I'm afraid. 😉🏴
I've been to the Lake District and climbed a hill. It seemed fun and I would do it again in a heartbeat. A simple life, a simple trip. A beautiful part of the world.
I was there once. It's such a beautiful place but too much a monitored country. Police at every corner arresting suspected "illegal" immigrants, laws just too strict. Greetings from Ghana.
What on earth are you talking about? I am a native Brit and there certainly are not police on every corner - and arresting immigrants for no reason? How would they do that exactly? Demand to see your passport on the street? Don’t be absurd.
Planning my England tour for the future and your videos are the best I've seen on the internet. And you're a true gentleman in presenting and behavior, love your style. Everything well explained.
While visiting northern England, do not miss out on a trip to York, it's truly inspiring and depending how much time you have the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Yorkshire coast around Whitby is well worth a shot. The only thing to remember is that although the Lake District has some of the most stunning scenery in northern Europe it is also the wettest part of England, so bring your waterproofs, having said that when I last went, it was warm ans sunny all week. Food wise try the Cumbrian sausage, the local lamb and also black pudding! Enjoy!
When you visit England, GO IN THE SUMMER. I love my country to bits but I really dislike the weather for most of the year. Very cloudy, gloomy, cold and wet for like 9 months
He is so right, Catbells does leave a lasting impression on your memory! I'm 23 now, and I still remember climbing Catbells at the age of 5 or 6 with my parents and grandad. It was a beautifully sunny and warm day, but the wind was strong, so there were even a couple of mini tornadoes / dust devils on the hillside, and the view on this video is just as I remember. Amazing, when you consider I haven't thought about that day for perhaps 10 years or more.
I go to Durham University and I get to graduate in this beautiful cathedral, I see it every morning as I walk to lectures and I still can't believe how lucky I am! There is a tradition here amongst students that you aren't allowed to go up the bell tower until you graduate. If you go up before, it's supposed to be bad luck

You know what attracted me most is the nature, the beauty of it. very fascinating...two thumbs up for you sir great job...I really enjoyed it...more power...
Nothing - and I mean, really, absolutely nothing - is more extraordinary in Britain than the beauty of the countryside. Nowhere in the world is there a landscape that has been more intensively utilised - more mined, farmed, quarried, covered with cities and clanging factories, threaded with motorways and railway lines - and yet remains so comprehensively and reliably lovely over most of its extent. It is the happiest accident in history. ....Bill Bryson US born writer now living here
This video brought me the sweet memories of our short visit to the schools in Durham . We were taken to see the Cathedral in Durham . The Bsmburgh Castle a farming area in a bus . It was really a nice and unforgettable journey I ever had in my life. That's why I am longing to come there again to lead a peaceful life.
Visited Durham 35 yrs ago. Stayed in the university dorm next to the cathedral while students gone on summer break. Can still vividly remember the area like it was yesterday & this video brings it all back to mind. The feeling of history surrounds you here & I believe strongly it's haunted - but not in a bad way. Definitely stop here if touring England.
I miss my old country when I watch these Videos. But before I moved to Canada, I spent a solid three months travelling the nooks and historic areas of England and the West Country. I was from Surrey my wife from Nuneaton Warwickshire. We live in a different kind of beauty, Central British Columbia Canada. The raw Mountain Beauty and the Wildness is different.
I remember an American friend coming over here for short visit. She was absolutely taken away by our countryside and wouldn't stop going on about it and showing pictures of, to me, average English countryside. I guess I've took Englands countryside for granted.
South England was pretty boring countryside wise, beautiful yes, but similar to the rural area in the US that I'm in. The more North I went though, the more obsessed. and OML, IRELAND! I would not mind living in Ireland for half a decade honestly.
Brilliant and informative as always. With regard to Durham Cathedral, within this magnificent building is the final resting place of the Venerable Bede, outstanding scholar and scribe of early Saxon England.
MrTorleon. Hi Mr Torleon, actually it is Saint Bede, the Venerable Doctor. He was a brilliant historian and Doctor of the Catholic Church. His reputation for learning gained him the title of honour: Venerable Doctor. Brilliant intellectuals were acknowledged with distinguishing titles, for instance, St.Thomas Aquinas is known as the Angelic Doctor, Saint Francis de Sales is known as the Gentle Doctor, because of their particular dispositions.
The Lake district is easily one of the jewels in the tiara of England . Everywhere you look nature has endowed it with superlative views and fabulous scenery .A journey through this enchanting region will leave a lasting impression on the mind of the traveller .You would be forgiven if you attempted to break into verse however maudlin . Was Wordsworth destined to be born here or did he find his calling because of his place of birth !
"This royal throne of kings, this sceptered isle, This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, This other Eden, demi-paradise, This fortress built by Nature for herself Against infection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world, This precious stone set in the silver sea, Which serves it in the office of a wall Or as a moat defensive to a house, Against the envy of less happier lands,--This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England." William Shakespeare
Until the 1990's the area around Durham was a centre of the coal mining industry, when it didn't look quite as pretty as it does today! The view from the top of Durham Cathedral's tower is stunning on a clear day. You can go on a guided tour of Durham's Norman castle which was the Palace of the Prince-Bishops of the County Palatine of Durham until 1832, and thereafter a Hall of Residence for University students! Durham is about fifteen minutes by train from the much larger city of Newcastle-on-Tyne, which is also well worth a visit!
Excellent! Man you did good work. You highlighted very good places I enjoyed a full video after long I see a video where I seen villages green hills lakes and much more. Rick! God bless you for such a inspiring work that is the great source of enjoying at home.
I'm from England. The Lake district is very beautiful and there is a lot of things to do there. I highly recommend it if you get the chance. I'd love to visit Siberia and the Caucasus region. Russia is so huge, Murmansk to Vladivostok. You are lucky.
If you ever visit Durham, make sure that you attend Choral Evensong (Vespers) in the Cathedral and climb to the top of the tower (lots of steps!) to enjoy the fantastic view. Next door to the Cathedral is Durham Castle which was the Palace of the Prince-Bishops of Durham until 1832 and thereafter Hall of Residence for University students, and Is open to members of the public via a guided tour!
I'm so happy to call this region home - I'm from just outside the Lake District, on the coast. Nice to see a documentary that doesn't focus solely on Windermere (a lot of tourists think that's the only part of the Lakes to exist!).
Another nice video from Rick Steves! Many thanks! I was in Durham in May 2022. To try to take a selfie with the façade of Durham Cathedral, I walked around, and back & forth on the river path, and finally learned that there was/is NO spot where anybody could see the whole façade up-close on ground. At least, this video is a confirmation. The best angle from which I saw the whole Cathedral most pleasantly was on the train from Durham back to York. And that beautiful sight lasted only 1 second.

I'm from Thailand ,I love England so much and hope visitting in my life.
You are always welcome, just don't be 1 of them annoying tourists..
Nana kee , London looks like Thailand now, and Turkey, Pakistan, Israel, china good luck with your visit to everyone's capital, all the born Londoners are slowly moving out to the countryside, being squeezed out I'm afraid. 😉🏴
That place is really breathtaking. I'll move to England in three months and I can't wait to visit those places. Greetings from south Italy

I've been to the Lake District and climbed a hill. It seemed fun and I would do it again in a heartbeat. A simple life, a simple trip. A beautiful part of the world.

One of life’s greatest pleasures …
GREAT BRITAIN IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY ON EARTH THEY HAVE BEEN BLESSED BY GOD THEIR ACCENT AND THEIR BEAUTIFUL FACES
England is a gorgeous country but there are others just as good.
We aren’t the best country in the world but are one of the best and, yes we are very blessed to have such a beautiful country to live in.
@@Gungus-v1g I wonder if you say that on other countries pages.

Durham is such an atmospheric city, many happy memories of rowing on this river as a kid and hiking on the Roman wall
Excellent. Beautiful countryside. I have been to lake District while studying in UK. Beautiful country and nice people
Planning my England tour for the future and your videos are the best I've seen on the internet.
Enjoy!
How did it go?
When you visit England, GO IN THE SUMMER.
I love my country to bits but I really dislike the weather for most of the year. Very cloudy, gloomy, cold and wet for like 9 months
Please put me in your suitcase
@@SpitfireMLG I love your country for its weather, I don't like too much heat.
I was so impressed with the friendliness of the people in the north of England.
How lucky I am to live in Cumbria and the ability to see this countryside every day and night

Thanks you very much Sir for this video

This is the best travel video of Britain on You tube----excellent in every way.
I have had the privilege of visiting the lake district and have friends living in the area. One of the truly magical places in the world. Cannot wait to return for another visit.
The Lake District is obviously a hiking paradise, also given the very scenic landscape. I've great appreciation for Ricks videos, and also like the unexited and relaxed way he presents them - a real treasure to be digged out :)
Living in the country is freedom, breathtaking.
The beauty of Northern England is undisputed but it comes at a cost of a somewhat grey climate which can become depressing. Any visitor to the region should not miss Durham Cathedral, one of the greatest and awe inspiring buildings in the World.
I enjoyed every single minute of the video, I wish it was endless though, good voice narration and quality history informations, makes the video a soothing experience for English history fans like me. Thank you Rick Steve!

I was born in County Durham and the Lake District is my favourite place in the world..so this was a bit of a no brainer. Thanks for sharing.
If I ever got the chance to live in England, I would certainly abandon the big cities and rather settle in the country side. You Brits are so lucky. One love
It's a shame so many people think London when they think of England, there is so much more to see
I don't like large cities, and I love Devon and Cornwall
Tom Johns not British, English please :(
I also have the same thinking as we need calm and peace, great weather.environment.
There’s parts of Manchester in the Peak District and the Lake District is only 2 hours away England’s not that big lol
Artistically presented, nature and its beauty personified.
Dear Rick. Your guides are fantastic. I thought I knew the best of Europe, but it took your wonderful videos to really make me look again. Thanks.
I studied at UCLan, Preston for one semester as an exchange student this year. I am an English major in Korea and visiting Lake Distirct was one of the most memorable expriences in England. I could see why so many poets like Wordsworth and others came to this beautiful place. Wish I could go Lake District again near future.
Wordsworth was born there. Local lad.
Preston?? Horrible place
I really appreciate the beauty of England. I love different places from valleys to cities, thanks Mr. Steve for bringing us in England through your videos. Hi Aslya, greetings from Ireland 😘😀
I see why Wordsworth loved this landscape, so beautiful and inspirational! Glad to see the land is so wonderfully taken care of!
It is the happiest accident in history. ....Bill Bryson US born writer now living here
There is more and limitless greenery than anywhere in the World. I Really love Europe.

@@edwardswarbrick118 actuarial, Bede was never venerated as a Saint, hence the ‘venerable’ title..

My Wife and I hike the Lake District several times a year, it's heaven on earth to us both :)
The conversation trying to sort out the what & how of cricket was priceless.

Michiganders will come to England when it's safe to do so.
Durham is about fifteen minutes by train from the much larger city of Newcastle-on-Tyne, which is also well worth a visit!
its beautiful. I live here now and exploring..
Excellent! Man you did good work. You highlighted very good places I enjoyed a full video after long I see a video where I seen villages green hills lakes and much more. Rick! God bless you for such a inspiring work that is the great source of enjoying at home.

so how was it love?
If you ever visit Durham, make sure that you attend Choral Evensong (Vespers) in the Cathedral and climb to the top of the tower (lots of steps!) to enjoy the fantastic view. Next door to the Cathedral is Durham Castle which was the Palace of the Prince-Bishops of Durham until 1832 and thereafter Hall of Residence for University students, and Is open to members of the public via a guided tour!
You work Russia OK good
I'm so happy to call this region home - I'm from just outside the Lake District, on the coast. Nice to see a documentary that doesn't focus solely on Windermere (a lot of tourists think that's the only part of the Lakes to exist!).
I love the old gingerbread shop in Grassmere. The Lake District is heaven on earth.

I studied in England and I never had a chance to see the real beauty of England. I must travel again and go Northwest

tamino27 sometimes we think we can't afford it we can do a lot of things on a budget with a bit of careful planning. Want it wing it and chance it.
Be careful visiting England because of the rise in racism since they voted to exit the European Union. My friend's family had a frightening experience when they were confronted by a group of local people who told them to go home. It was not a pleasant experience. Many Europeans have left the country since this vote to leave. Just be careful.
what i like much about England is that all hills and mountains are accessible by walk
