Today we talk about a cool set of 1993 twins! A metallic green explorer and flying v set with celluloid pickguards. I was aware of the Les Paul Studio and SG Standard run of these but hadn't run into these before. Sadly, they didn't get the custom shop edition decal though :(

The problem with taking off the pearloid guards is they shrink and never fit the guitar again. If you take it off, screw it down to a piece of wood so it won’t curl u like a potato chip.
John Entwhistle probably would have rocked that Explorer Bass.
I think Gibson should make more guitars with a Floyd.
no thanks.....
I hate offgassing. And generally speaking, most of the people around me don’t appreciate it either.
the first one has had a re-fret. there's chipping from where the frets have been pulled.
You should add that if they DO have the old celluloid pickguard and they should take it off, they should ALSO screw that pickguard into a piece of plywood immediately, or the shrinking will continue and it will NEVER go back on the guitar in the future due to warp and shrink
The worn off gold on the pickups of the LP studio is probably from natural wear from playing the guitar. All my guitars get wear on the plating of the pickups on the bottom side from playing them. A lot of players end up touching the pickups on the bottoms and tops, on the outside of the pickups. Even my newer 61 SG with gold hardware that I got like a year ago is missing some gold on the bottom of the pickups.
Yea gold plating wears off with use. The wear patterns are kinda part of the appeal. You can tell the guitar has been played, and even how it’s been played (e.g., if someone rests their hand a certain way or does a lot of palm-mutes), by the wear on the bridge and tailpiece.
The green SG with the gold hardware with the custom shop decal was super cool 👏🤘🤘
My 94 Lucille had tarnish from the pickguard. Gibson would not replace the pickguard
That voyager has a body mounted Floyd. If they send them out right (especially with the bolt on neck) it is going to be like a hard tail that can dive. It shouldn't do anything weird and shouldn't have any tuning issues since it wont float.
With a 34 mm block. No problem doofus
@@NicholasManupella-zj1kdShow us on the doll where the bad man touched you.
I have one of the Blonde Beauties. Bought it in ‘08, a year after they were made, and surprisingly the Guitar Center where I got it had marked it down a good bit to try to move it. One of the best LPs I’ve ever played…after I got done modding it. “For shame, modding a limited run collector’s piece,”I hear you cry. It’s reversible. Replaced the tuners with locking tuners (drop-in replacements, no drilling), swapped the stock nut for a graph-tech tusq, put a Bigsby on it (with a Vibramate so I wouldn’t need to drill it), put straplock buttons on it, swapped the bridge for a roller bridge, and swapped the black back plastic covers for cream so they wouldn’t look so out-of-place with the other cream plastics and binding.
I do have almost all the stock original parts, just in case I ever sell it (which I probably won’t)…except the pickguard and gold mounting bracket that came in the case with it, and the original strap buttons, which unfortunately I lost at some point. It wasn’t drilled for the pickguard and I didn’t want it and the bracket and original strap buttons taking up unnecessary space in the case compartment, which I use to keep a strap, spare strings, capo, and tuner in, so I took them out of the case, and…I think I may have accidentally left them at my old apartment when I moved out. Alas, it’ll never be truly all-original again. Just 95%. But since I don’t plan on ever selling it anyway, not a big deal to me.
I got mine in 07 when they were introduced, even got a Gibson calendar with this guitar featured on one of the months. The only thing I’ve done to mine were the strap locks, everything else is original. My dad got this as a gift so I’ll never part with it. I’ve gigged the hell out of it for the first 3yrs I had it but it’s still in excellent shape and has great tone even compared to my 59cs.
@@davidking2835 Yea I love the tone on mine. My only complaint on the sounds with mine would be that it’s a little less easy to get loud pinch harmonics on the high B and E up past the 12th fret than on some other guitars I’ve got, which is likely tied to having low/middle-output pickups, but that’s it. It’s got a very characterful vintage sound without losing any versatility for more modern tones.
You don't want to demo the Lzzy Hale Kramer just because it has a Floyd on it? 🤣🤦🏻♂️
The bottom string on the Explorer Bass is wound opposite to the other 3 strings. That will be fun to tune! ;)
so what are the three knobs on the Explorer bass supposed to do? One pick up so I would only expect one tone and one volume.
Nothing wrong with a Floyd. Set up correctly they can be dead stable tuning wise. Most folks who complain about them just don't have the motivation to deal with the set-up process. As a child of the 80s I've owned (own) many. I actually prefer the Washburn Wonderbar. Can palm mute without detuning, break a string and the other 5 stay in tune, surface mount so no routing etc. The original Kahler beats the Floyd for me as well. More stable IMO. But alas I've gotten lazy and mostly play T.O.M. equipted guitars these days. Lol. I still find locking tuners to be useless though. A properly wrapped tuner and properly stretched strings work just as well.
It looks like it's flush mounted for dive only, it wouldn't even float.
Im glad they brought back the 85 Voyager body but why did they have to make it Lzzy Hale sig. At that price, might as well get the bc rich ironbird prophecy.
I would love that bass but i would slap thunderbuckers into it instantly.
Is that the same with all brands celluloid pickguards? I know fender used them and occasionally reissues do. A lot of people also buy aftermarket celluloid pickguards for strata.
your graphics have gotten really funny lately and I really appreciate it 😂🤣
I thought The EB-4 was an SG style bass with a single pickup with some sort of switching feature
Gibson did a violin bass?!?! Woah, I had no idea! I know about Hofner and such, but didn’t know Gibson did one
Yeah the Hofner is one of those instances where the knockoff is more popular than the original.
Long before Hofner did, in fact.
@@VincentBricki hope hofner thanked Paul for that😂
Only seen two in action. James Dewar (Trower) and Felix Pappalardi (Mountain).
@@russellmorgan5611 Jack Bruce played one at the Cream reunion shows.
Cmon, Trogs, I’d love to see your new pointy Lizzy review.
that blue sparkle SG is a MUST! absolutely gorgeous
Why would some rest that Les Paul against bricks and mortar? Surely that would risk damage to the finish on the neck!
Machine head played the green flying v at dynamo festival 1995, check it out
You’ve missed out on the sparkle
Merry Christmas Trogly! :D
Time to nerd out: Actually, that was the EB-4 T (as in Tobias), different than the EB-4, which is more Gibson's style.
Shoutout to the 12th fret
check out the epiphone goth explorer…. not rare but not plentiful and the specs and woods will surprise u. they were 59 spec
The Steve Stevens LP looks like a Robert Kantor modded one.
It was a custom order
This would be awesome if it was really Steve Stevens
@@vadenk4433 my name is Steve Stevens...but not THAT Steve Stevens
Okay im not a fan of single cuts whatsoever but the finish on that last one oh man I'd love to see a V in that sparkle. Kirk hammets latest inclusion is cool but uhg i cant stand emg pickups
Meanwhile…in reality world, you take those pickguards off and they will continue to shrink and will not fit the screw holes ever again…so, lose-lose
As someone else has suggested, screw it down to a piece of scrap plywood
Evening all!!
Didn't John Entwistle play an Explorer Bass
This ‘96 sparkle burst LP is todays winner but all this bling’s got me looking at the ‘64 Clapton Firebird.
That V/EX set for $6,000 was amazing. MAN I am pissy I missed that.. 😂
I'm not sure why Troggy didn't jump all of that
@@JokersWild70 He said he made an offer. You know how shrewd a businessman he is, right? Doesn't get talked about much in the comments and there is no reason to talk about it in his guitar documentation vids but dude is a money man. He takes it seriously and that's why he is where he is. He can say no to a DREAM over $100.
EDIT: I don't know him personally and should've prefaced with the fact that this is not something I know of personally, only from a few people who have haggled with him. That he is smart, careful, and stoic when it comes to it.
The market for those new Lizzy Hale Voyagers, judging from the marketing promo is supposed to be teen girls.
WHAT TEENAGE GIRL WANTS OR NEEDS A FLLOYD ROSE!?
Or, you can just get pearloid pickguards custom cut or stock in the usual pickguard material that looks like the original celluloid. Seems better than the guitars being chemically eaten alive or permanently stored in pieces to prevent it.
Whats up CC?
@@jonathanhudak2059 Hey brother man!
Yes, the problem for my Firebird with the unique red and white lined guard is finding someone who can make it with a stable material that still LOOKS the part.
@cataclysmicconverter howdy sir!
@@Trog Quite a few custom makers out there and it's not that expensive considering. And for clarity, that wasn't aimed at you and your particular Firebird, but owners with this conundrum in general.
how do you tell if its celluloid?
I really appreciate that you post every day. Thank you Trogly ❤

just a thought...BUT...the art of buying and selling guitars is....NOT to buy them all......haa....cheers...
Cant imagine a better way to come back from a two week long work trip than "Welcome back Troglodytes!"
interesting guitars for sure thanks for sharing
Please, if you Can get your hands on one of them, demo the baritone silver burst Explorer or 7 string Explorer or V
How bad is to come back in yr channel after I while and just see Gibson Gibson Gibson, you are more than that
That’s what I like and I’ve built a community around that. Plenty of other channels if you enjoy other brands!
He throws in a variety every once in a while and other guitar brands are always mentioned to bring context or comparisons. But I only started watching this year so I guess I like me them Gibson's too.
Thanks for the info on the Custom Shop Edition badge
Hey there
Great episode , love the twins , the Explorer bass & Explorer in Seafoam are uh-mazing !...The Brunswick Blue SG is very handsome , and the Blonde Beauty is quite a looker ...Thanks Trogly !
Thanks for sharing.
i remember when this guy keep comment other people post about how expensive other seller sell the guitar.
he himself sell thoose expensive.
as much you untitle for ur selling price.
so are other seller.
Austin, I'm so Happy that you have been bitten by the Explorer/Flying V Bug! I have to say that after a few years of EVERYTHING Les Paul I was begining to think your were spawned by George Gruhn! He called me every dirty name in the book when I spoke with him a few years ago about my then passion of the Gibson SG and he ripped into me like a Great White Shark! Telling me that I needed to get my head examined for not owning the ONLY guitar that matters The Gibson Les Paul. He told me that the tonality abilitiy of the Les Paul put's every other hard body guitar to shame and after buying my Black Beauty with 3 pickups I finally realized what I had been chasing in a guitar that is capable of so many tones! I still love my Explorers and Flying Vs and they are special in their own way but I'm glad you opened up your tastes for other Gibson guitars and you can't go wrong collecting the Explorer or Flying V!
That Brunswick Blue sparkle SG Custom was sharp! My favorite of all of tonight's guitars! Would love to see the Trogmeister demo that new Lizzy Hale Kramer guitar! Come on Austin get your spandex pants and platform boots out of your closet and rock that ax!
Lizzy Hale? Trading at steep discounts, lol.
Show us your best!
A Gibson guitar is a problem in general! 🤮
So Kramer basically made a BC Rich Ironbird for Lizzy Hale ????
Never though a celluloid pick guard would look that good on the v and the explorer
✌️
Peace Peace Hector Merry Christmas.

It must be ugly guitar week.
What's up with Gibson trying to Sue? But I only agree that 1 is to make white pickups. They are already ruined A couple awesome guitars. You don't see Fender doing this. This is why I don't like the brand. They remind you of a rich person that snort cocaine. And has problems with people who do drugs.
Didn't Rick "Sav" Savage once play an Exp. Bass in the early days of Def Leppard? At least, he was depicted in the made-for-VH1 biopic as playing a bass in that body shape.
He had a Hamer explorer style bass.

That new Lizzy Hale Kramer looks very dangerous!
more fender
Pretty amazing that Gibson would sell a guitar with a fret board like that. All chipped and chewed
That explorer looks to me as it had a refret. The lines around the frets and some of the rough edges makes me think about it..
Clickbait title got me. I'll avoid this channel in the the future
Not clickbait at all - if your case shroud is changing colors, you have a problem with an off gassing pickguard that will ruin the finish of your guitar if left alone
This has to be satire, right?
This new LH sig it's by far the most ugly guitar i have ever see
That lzzy Hale kramer is hideous! What an awful ugly guitar!
