A 30 min episode on one guitar, you know it must be a special peice.
Love the wood binding. it's one of my favorite touches to these "furniture" style LPs

I would argue that the late 70’s Norlin quality drastically improved over the previous era. That led to fantastic “pre-historic” reissues among a ton of other fantastic custom guitars. I really like the early 80’s V and Explorer reissues.

Love seeing the shot of this guitar along with its “relatives”. Also super cool that you have not only the first super custom, but Les Paul’s own guitar! Love the show Austin!

Although it's not a collector's grade condition, the story of the guitar is more important. The first super custom, own by Les is nice story to tell 🤘🤘🤘

Worth it! Beautiful!! In 79 I was 27. I've got a lot more dings and scratches on me in the same 44 years. That guitar has character with the dings and scratches and to think Les Paul himself could have put some of those there. Don't complain young man.

This guitar should be behind glass in a show room? I can’t imagine using it to gig with, and I think you’re brave to disassemble these guitar’s no matter how careful you try to be accidents happen, wearing screw heads, slip of a screwdriver? Some guitars from public owners yea but you know the history IDK😏

I have a 1979 Les Paul Standard that came with P90s and pankake mahogany body, maple top, maple neck and ebony fretboard. At some point, someone had gutted it and put in Super Distortions, which frankly look and sound incredible and will never leave the guitar. The only thing i did was add treble bleeds and swap the magnets for double thick, short Alnico 5 and it did exactly what i wanted - smoothed the highs without loosing any beef.
It's my favorite guitar sound ever. There's something about a Les Paul with an Ebony Fretboard and Maple neck. Still has the chunk, but an added 8khz-10khz brightness and complexity without being overbearing. It is an absolue juggernaut in tone.
If the pickups in this lack some beef, an easy, reversable thing would be to swap the magnets for Alnico 6 (yes, 6!) or Alnico 8. Either will give you more mid push and that gentle alnico compression

Firstly, congratulations on finally snagging your current SUPER RARE Les Paul find with amazing provenance Austin! Secondly, the shielding base plate stamp is my birthday! Yet despite its flaws, to me (and probably you too) the historical value of this piece in the terms of all things Gibson and the Les Paul model is the same as or equal to nothing short of priceless. Truly an astoundingly beautiful milestone of a guitar. Onward to the next hunt! Right on and collect and assemble for the museum on! \m/

This is a beautiful guitar that you can play and not worry about getting a little ding, with all the Murphy Labs fake aged guitars this is a real survivor, it is hard to understand why an apology for its condition is needed. I love the wood binding and added wood appointments, the less plastic the better.

Hey Austin, congrats. My opinion, with some wear on the guitar it lends itself to be played! Not only as a collector piece. If you chased and lusted over this thing for years, I would agree the condition would be somewhat of a disappointment but now you can play the darn thing with out worrying a bout a ding or a small sctrach here and there. Enjoy it, my friend, as someone in the past has already!

The super custom is my kind of Les Paul. I would even accept one with a headstock repair. providing it was a good repair. and if there was a super custom in natural finish. I simply love all the brass parts especially the brass nut. even one of those adjustable brass nuts even though they tend to make the tone a little brighter. and all the wood parts that would normally be plastic. in fact even more wood or brass would be be nice. such the pick-up rings and the pickgard in brass or wood. and use all the cool parts such as the TP 6 tailpiece and the harmonica bridge and even the flip out winding tuners. I guess I could build one myself? just find a proper LP custom candidate. and then hunt down all the cool parts. and make a real fancy boy Les Paul. it would probably be a difficult task. but it would be worth it to have such a fancy boy Les Paul? even though if it didn't come from the factory that way.
hell why stop there? a person could even do this with an ES 335. hell the world is you're oyster.

I so enjoyed this episode! I am a Norlin lover, and have one, a 1979 Les Paul Custom, heritage cherryburst, in some kind of fantastic condition, purchased through Olivia's. I also have an amazing Riverside Red 97 LPC Catalina, purchased from CME, who get me the best guitars! I have mainly strats and at my age, I'm starting to think about what will become of my collection. I'm leaning toward a music school or something. My friend if I were you I would never get rid of that guitar but there is only one other above that one that you would probably want and it was in a music store in Gulfport, Mississippi many years ago, it was one of six Les Paul's that Les Paul himself had hand carved and put 24-karat gold pick up playted pickup covers on it, it had real mother of pearl in the neck and it was an extra thin Neck it was a very unique looking guitar and they turned down eleven thousand dollars, $11,000.00 for it . Mr Samuel Fitch on the Gulf Coast collected Gibson's and martins and he offered them $10,000 and they wouldn't take it I wish I could remember the name of the music shop I know where it was located in the Hardy Court shopping center I just can't think of the name of that music store, but yes they had an advertisement it was in a glass case nobody could touch it and they said it was only one of six Les Paul's like it in world, and that Les Paul himself hand carved this guitar it was very unique looking and if I ever meet anybody else that knows where that guitar ended up at I will let you know. Also right up the street from it pinkston's music store in Biloxi on the pass road had their music shop and their special guitar was a non-electric guitar and they wanted close to a million dollars for it, it had a picture of Glenn Armstrong inside a glass case and people can only see it they couldn't touch it and it had real moon dust enclosed with it they said that Mr pinkston was a personal friend of John Glenn Armstrong and that Armstrong took that guitar to the moon and brought it back with him. The people at the chancery vault in Biloxi, Mississippi could tell you who inherited his estste. Mr pinkston Died last year I believe, iand the store was closed, Christie's could probably auction that guitar and the picture and the moondust off for $100,000,000.00

Well the top carve as I understand varied. Was the standard or custo, consistent. Neck and head stock break angles, varied enough. Then you get into the 60s, where the SG came from. 68 they brought back LPs, into the 70s Norlin era. Nolin is responsible Der these super customs n others. I have a 74 custom black, won't trade or sell. If you find an old one, hearing some MOJO?? Get a pro setup, refret, whatever it needs. Brass parts etc, your getting vintage tones on a new guitar.
