  • How To Solder A Gas Tank Repair | Soldering A Copper Patch | E30 Fuel Tank Repair & Repaint | 011
In this BMW E30 Project episode, I get around to repairing the leaky fuel tank and soldering a patch on the pinhole I found in it just above the filler neck in the last episode.
Here's what I use in this video:
    Solder: ebay.us/6qAhEH
    Soldering Flux: ebay.us/fhP5kP
    Rotary tool: ebay.us/ZPSOCi
    Rotary tool wire brushes: ebay.us/Gvv0zb
    Parkside Angle Grinder: ebay.us/RUQyni
    Epoxy Primer: ebay.us/GeNmxP
    Sealey spray gun: ebay.us/1qe504
I initially thought I might be able to do a bit of a quick and easy bodge and simply put a self-tapping screw in the hole to plug it, however, I wire brushed the steel fuel tank again to find the hole was a lot larger than it initially looked.
This sadly ruled out any of my bodges and left me wondering how I could go about welding a patch onto the tank safely.
After a good bit of research I decided against JB Weld which was recommended to me, and went for a more traditional solder repair, soldering a copper patch onto the hole. It helped that I already had everything I needed to do that so didn't need to wait for JB Weld in the mail.
You often see these putty repairs recommended which are definitely only "semi-permanent" at best. I'm confident my solder repair as shown in this video is a life-long repair, and this tank is going to last me many years into the future now.
After the gas tank solder repair was done and dusted, I moved back to the original objective I had with this tank, and got it repainted and restored up to it's former glory.
I opted for silver instead of the original black colour for the fuel tank, and zinc nickel plated the hardware and fixings.
Leaky fuel tank holes are a common issue with steel BMW E30 fuel tanks at this point, and replacement gas tanks are getting more and more expensive as fewer are manufactured. So hopefully my experience with this will be helpful for others looking to save themselves some money.

I’m the middle of full restoration, great videos. Like to know if you have idea of the size of the 3 foam pads you used to avoid noise 😊

Cheers! Hmm can't remember their size exactly, something like 6x10cm. I don't think its especially important luckily. 😃

Welcome aboard mate, not a million miles from us on the coast. :)
It's hard to stay focused, and to be honest this project is going way slower than I'd ever imagined. But I'm just trying to keep things in motion and avoid grinding to a halt.
That's one of the reasons I decided to document the E30 build on YT in the first place actually, makes me a bit more accountable to actually get on with it. :D
Maybe you should do the same?

Nice work on the tank! The inside of your e30 looks super clean almost like it just left the factory! Did you absolutely have to remove the rear subframe to get the tank out?

Way too hot with that torch. You burn the flux. For next time, use tinning butter as in lead loading. Don’t mean to be on your case, just trying to help you and the people who will watch.
