- This week I compare my new LA Chopper Bourbon Frisco Mini Ape Hanger handle bars against a Bung King 6" Riser with my stock Iron 883 bar (that's what Harley calls it). It's a comparison video by default because I didn't know the proper maintenance that needs to be done on ape hanger bars after your iinstall them. Learn from my mistake and enjoy some entertainment too.

A good piece of advice I got on bars is to also consider the width of your shoulders compared to the bars. Wide shoulders and narrow bars can make the handling twitchy. Narrow bars look and feel really cool but might handle like garbage, especially on a narrow front end like a sporty.
That advice makes sense. When running the Frisco bars I felt there wasn’t much play, i felt I had to be precise with my movements. Thanks for sharing that tip!

That happened to me on an old FX, swapped to 18” apes, they folded quicker than a tent in a hurricane on me during the second ride after install. Good times.

Glad you healed up okay, and that the Bung King bar and sliders did their job! A good reminder that I still need to get the rear sliders installed on my 883 (I don’t currently have a lift to get the back wheel off the ground).
They certainly did! Make sure you get confirmation on the color, because I did order black, not gray. LOL.

We all learn things differently and sometimes we over look small things that cause us big problems so it happens so at least you are looking at it as a learning experience and that’s a good thing.
One bit of advice though you are bending your wrist to much and having it bent at that angle for any time will cause wrist pain. You want your wrist lvl when you are riding so to achieve this just bend your wrist slightly the other way at the start before rolling on the throttle and it will be more flat and lvl at the spot you are holding to keep speed.

Glad you're ok but don't blame the bars for your maintenance failure. I've run several apes and they stay just fine when installed properly.
12" mini apes on my Sporty. Took awhile trying bars on the Titan before finding out wide rabbit ears are surprisingly comfortable and light handling.
The two points I was attempting to convey in the video were….I didn’t install the bars myself so I blame myself for not knowing to check the torque after first use and later in the video conveyed that you can’t blame the mechanic as it’s your bike and your responsibility to perform your own T-CLOCS before each ride. Second point…..if I had decided upon risers or T bars, which was my first inclination, rather than a less expensive handlebar option, which has a cantilever motion, I may not have experienced this failure. I apologize if the video didn’t convey these points succinctly or quickly enough up front (not sure how long you watched) but that’s the crux of it.
@@KennyQuestShow It's more the way you threw the bars like they were to blame. Honestly I don't think the stock Harley risers are particularly good. I have had those fail to hold a bar in place. My brass Throwback risers seem much more secure. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like they make those anymore.
@@jameshill8498 I appreciate you elaborating. At the time, I wasn’t happy that I spent money on bars that were now bent and unusable, due to something that was preventable. In the days passing I relaxed a bit as I shared on camera. In the end I have the set up I’m happy with for that bike. In the future though I want apes for my chopper/bobber so I need to be thorough with the install and this experience will ensure that!
I get that, I spent almost $200 on a new back tire that for no apparent reason causes the ass end of the bike to wobble. Tried everything, balanced it twice and replaced the bearings. I finally had to throw it on the burn pile and buy a new tire. Bike is riding good again but I am out a pile of money, not happy.
@@KennyQuestShow Heck last year I put a new wheel on the Sportster, new tire, new tube even a new rim strip. Even had a Shop install the tire. 200 miles later at 70mph on the interstate, boom, tube completely blows out, tire is knocked partially off the rim. Bike slides this way, then that way. I end up in the hospital for the week with pretty severe chest injuries and 5 months of recovery.
I get the frustration. Lol
