Also Pokemon is owned by Gamefreak. But Nintendo has a controlling interest, promotes the franchise, and is an exclusive to Nintendo just like Yo-Kai watch. It is hypocritical to say that Nintendo didn't make it. And if you believe that then neither Star Fox or modern Donkey Kong are Nintendo properties,

I find it bizarre that the yo-kai watch games, whilst they were still beign produced, were consistently improving with every entry, whereas pokemon's titels continued to degrade in quality. This might be an example of how priority affects the end product, as both prioritized different things. Yo-Kai watch is like Terraria, in of that they decided to can any ambitious ideas (I.E. Terraria Otherworld and Global launch YKW games) to focus on its main market/title, fleshing it out to become the best version it could possibly be, like a fire ant colony, before being made available to the public. Pokeon is like Minecraft, where as they started shifting focus away from the main game series to spin-offs and merchandisables, it had been to the detriment of the main meat and potatoes of their respective franchises, with Minecraft acquiring a series of lackluster and dissapointing updates post-1.16, and Pokemon posting atrocities like SWSH and SV, knowing they would sell. The difference beteween the two is that for both franchises, there is a corporate entity that doesn't care if people protest or fully boycott the game; those franchises had grown so large, that they began to render themselves unwise, making decisions which actively hamper the main draws to said franchises in the first place.
Recently yo kai watch has been getting some love (mostly through the memes) and im happy for it, it'll be cool if we could enjoy both franchises without conflict.

it would have been hillarious if this ended up similar to the mario and sonic rivalry and they both become extremely iconic with crossover games and fandoms trying to argue whats better. its a shame level 5 went bankrupt
Damn, I’ve played the YoKai Watch games and really loved the franchise as a whole. Super whimsical in its writing and despite of being a monster collecting rpg game, it did just enough and more to be its own thing. Also favorite YoKai is Venoct, super cool design and character overall

Yo-Kai watch games are just full of a ton of good game design that Pokemon lacks.
Almost any complaint you hear about Pokemon games especially the Switch titles are practically non-existant in Yo-Kai Watch 3 from good animation, tons of free DLC, a competitive format that rewards creative teambuilds, the desire for real tkme anime esque action battles via Busters-T and more.
I appreciate you bringing up how Alola clearly took a ton of notes from Yo-Kai Watch stuff.
My personal favorite Yo-Kai is hard to pick cuz I love just about all of them but if I had to narrow it down, maybe Moolinda, Quagmira, Putasockinit and Draaagin.
Hey Yokai Watch still exists even though its presence in the West has largely disappeared. It even has a Nintendo switch title called Yokai Watch 4 that can be found in Japan. I don't know if there's an English translation, but the series is still kicking. I really hope the series comes back to the west. I miss Jibanyan...

I hope that Yokai Watch can make a comeback in America soon! I've spent many hours on 1, 2, and 3! It's one of the few game series I actually felt like replaying! The series is so charming and felt so different every game! My favorite Yokai have to be any Komasan variant, Tomnyan, and Illuminoct!

This video was actually really cool, I never noticed the similarities between Gen 7 and Yo-kai Watch! Oh and also my favorite Yo-kai are Usapyon and Komane. Oh and by the way, Yo-kai Watch itself even has some similarities to Ni no Kuni 1, as both are made by LEVEL-5 and both share a director, Ken Motomura.

I always felt gen 7 was one of the more hollow generations in terms of post games. Yo-kai watch didn’t make me fall in love with it when I played it either but i was a big fan of the gen 7 anime
SM’s post game was solid and USUM’s can rival that of B2W2???
@@T_kats USUM IS a solid improvement, but sm’s postgame consisted of battle tree and a few ultrabeasts. I personally really liked aspects of gen 7 like the Ultra Necrozma battle and going through the wormholes and the team rainbow rocket thing, but that’s all USUM content

yo kai watch was honestly such a cool series, thankfully there are still hopes for ykw4's localization since they announced its localization in china last year. Been a fan of the series ever since it came to the west, I remember being so excited after getting a 2DS with ykw1 pre-installed and proceeded to beat it in a week. Hard to believe I've been a fan of it for nearly over a decade now, that it's been around for nearly a decade, which also lets me realize that I'm old.

Thank you so much for making this video! I have a lengthy comment to make as someone who is an older fan of pokemon and yokai watch. (and digimon etc.) I've been waiting awhile for someone to really talk about this.
My situation is a bit unusual as I wasn't in the target demographic when the game came out. I was almost 20 when yo-kai watch first came out (with a younger sibling in the target range). I had always wondered how adults viewed pokemon when it started, but this is probably as close as I'll get. I am and always have been a big weeb/otaku. When the anime first came out, I overlooked it as there had been tons of people trying to claim the pokemon crown. However in late 2014, I had heard that yokai watch and it's toys had been the number 1 buzz of the year in Japan. So I got curious and gave the anime another shot. I was instantly hooked, and I understood why it had hooked so many in Japan. It reminded me of how I felt during gen 5 of pokemon where it came out in Japan before the US.
I was still a pokemon fan at the time, but I was starting to grow distant. I played gen 6 and liked it enough, but felt like that wow factor from earlier gens was missing. This was before pokemon go blew up (which I also enjoyed as it's own thing). So yokai watch felt like it came at the perfect time. The mascots were adorable and had unique personalities, the anime was silly and charming but occasionally serious and heartfelt. Over time my memory of the anime faded as it's been hard to find anything of yokai watch anymore, but that opinion still holds.
So when it came to the west in 2015, I was ready and excited! I thought Hasbro would be great for marketing after having gotten into MLP G4, Nintendo seemed like they wanted to push it, I thought "maybe it won't be as big as Japan, but it could still be healthy competition like Digimon sometimes is". Woo boy, was I wrong. I felt that the western toys lacked the appeal of the Japanese ones. They felt cheaper and more rushed, and a lot of cross-media abilities that made the original soar were removed or planned but never done. There was merch IRL not on the website, and merch on the website not IRL. You had to grab merch fast because anything outside of the first wave was very hard to find. I knew a friend who bought YW3 on physical, gamestop had 1 copy in the whole region, not store, region. That bad. I enjoyed Wibble Wobble for the whole year or so it existed. Following the anime dub got harder with time. Basically, it was getting harder to be a fan in the US as everything was just not working out. In Japan it wasn't much better, things were getting burnt out after 3, and when I finally played 4 in Japanese I'm like "there's no way the western fans would even get this because half of this content isn't out here!". And then, silence. Yes there was a spinoff here and there, but the golden era was over. I really hope the future is better.
Now pokemon fans, I have a bone to pick with. Yes it was cocky to claim yokai watch could kill pokemon in the west, but the way they treated the franchise never stood right with me. They never even gave it a chance. Pokemon fans often instantly bash the competition, then complain that pokemon has no competition! I noticed the influence gen 7 took from yokai watch, and it felt like no one else cared. Even the anime switched up it's designs and format! But for a long time it was radio silence online, until younger fans started talking about how they missed it. I miss it too! I miss the anime, and the silly medals, and the games, I miss what made yokai watch great. Pokemon is once again back in the state where it got too comfy, and now they are making more moves that sour fans. I hope that people finally give the monster tamer and mon collecter genre room to grow into more than pokemon competitors. I still love this genre and am happy to see others do too.
Edit: My fav yokai are probably Jibanyan and Komasan. I loved them so much in the anime. and Hidabat my beloved spirit animal!

There was one or two big names I remember from the original yokai watch fandom, but I felt like I hadn't really seen that interest reflected on UA-cam until recently. I think a lot of people are hoping Ghost Craft turns out well!
I had been wanting to get back into things for awhile, but after 4 came out and the west plans fell apart, I was seriously worried that it might not come back. I understand that from a company POV it wasn't as big as they wanted it to be, but I also think the scene has changed a lot since 2015. Pokemon is bigger than ever, and PalWorld really shocked me with how well it sold. I think that if they take their time and market it well that there is potential for a revival. Digimon had it's own dark years where not much was going on, and even if it had to milk some gen 1 nostalgia to do so, it's now back and doing a lot more in the west than back then.
Who knows, depending on how things go maybe I'll eventually do my own content about it. I know YW isn't super popular among older adults, but I feel like it did more than merely copy pokemon. I remember reading an interview where they mentioned some of the ideas of the franchise, and I think something I like from Japan mascots is the idea of giving things a personality, in a similar but different way that Pixar used to. Sanrio and San-X have done similar imo. (I also feel like it took some influence from Doraemon, which also had a Disney XD dub at the time) There's this new Sanrio character called Hanamaruobake, where it's pitch concept is something like "a ghost that shows up to people and gives them a hanamaru symbol, which in Japan means you did a good job!", and I swooned. That's such a yokai watch idea to do, and I love that! I loved the idea of these little yokai being around and secretly having influence on the world. And I liked how that each one felt like an individual character in the anime, in the same way early pokemon did with it's characters. Like you see Hungramps' design and think "a hungry grandpa? what's so special about that?", but then you hear his back story and man it still makes me tear up. lol
Yokai watch has a lot of heart, and I think it's something that pokemon needs to embrace more. I miss that in pokemon too, before it became the marketing machine it is today. (I am technically a gen 1 fan of pokemon, but I am not a gen wunner. I will always give the new stuff a chance.)
@@senflyer-I’m an older Pokémon fan who has loved Pokémon since 1998. I embraced the Yo-Kai Watch series as soon as it debuted. I was going to buy the game at launch back in 2015 but ended up getting a very early copy of Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon instead. I eventually got a new copy of Yo-Kai Watch for $5 clearance back in 2020 and I rode out Covid-19 with Jibanyan, Whisper, and the other Yo-Kai Watch characters. Still haven’t 100% it but I finished the main story and some post game.
Then last year I found a cheap sealed copy of Fleshy Souls at my local pawnshop and it has made my old 3DS more loved than my Switch which my daughter plays Let’s Go Eevee and Bluey on.
I really wish they would localize the Yo-Kai Watch switch games. I wanna play the remake and 4. 😭

Admittedly - I think something like Digimon is its own thing. It does its own stuff since its a tamagotchi sibling and such
But as for my beloved Yokai watch, god - if it wasn’t for sun and moon copying soultimates, then Ykw would be far ahead of Pokemon. Sadly, once Ykw shrank, the quality became so.. so much worse for pokemon. Ykw got better (After the train wreck of busters 2)

I love the Yo-Kai Watch games, it's so sad that nobody plays these anymore. The anime is not that great and I dislike that the Pokemon anime changed because of the Yo-Kai Watch anime, but the games are just amazing. I'm still obsessed with Komasan, Jibanyan, Whisper, Wobblewok, Melonyan and Master Enma. All the secrets and details in the game's huge world are great. I would pay my entire life savings just to get another Yo-kai Watch 3 and maybe some sort of "Yo-Kai Bank" so you can keep your Yokai in later games. The vibes in those games always manage to cheer me up whenever i replay one of them

Yo-Kai Watch had it's own charm, & I really loved the 3rd game & blasters. I really hope the fourth game gets localized soon, because I really want to see Nate, Whisper, & Jibanyan again.

I remember watching the Yo Kai Watch show when I was little, and I feel like I might re watch it sometime, but I'm still a bigger fan of Pokemon.
I never got into yokai watch or know how it represents yokai, but one of my favorite yokai have been spider related ones, tengu, and oni.
Yokai Watch was trying to be different and it worked which is why it was beloved by fans. What you said at 8:35 was why the franchise has sadly died.
Pokemon is still going not just because of new fans getting into it themselves or by older fans and how widespread it is, but also GameFreak was keeping up with the momentum of consoles. It's more obvious when we look at the jump from the Ultra games to Let's Go games. They learned their mistakes with gen 1 and 2 including transferring pokemon if we know their development history. If YKW 3 got released on the Switch, YKW would've likely still be around.

If Yo-kai Watch returns, they should make Jibanyan as a newcomer for Super Smash Bros. 6 in the future.
And speaking of Digimon, would also like to see Agumon as another Smash 6 newcomer (since Digimon first started as virtual pets (a “boy’s version” of Tamagotchi) and the virtual pet genre hasn’t been represented by a fighter in Super Smash Bros. yet, plus it’s another Bandai Namco franchise, just like Pac-Man and Tekken).
Sort of a basic choice for yo kai watch fans but my favorite yo kai is king Enma or Unkaind for a more obscure choice

I don't mind yo-kai watch being silent for a bit level-5 it's a AA studio with a lot of IP's and alot on their plates and so many of these had to just sit around and wait while yo-kai watch took all of level-5's attention so I'm perfectly fine being the one waiting now while they finally give other projects since love(have you tried megaton musashi its great)
In contrast to my profile picture my favorite yo-kai is actually shmoopie. Too many memories with that cutie to ever pick anybody else but thornyan's a pretty close second

My fave yokai is Snartle! I got him early in YW1 carried my team~ 🎉

jibanyan is my favourite but theres a reason, i never had the full version of yo-kai and yo-kai 2 and was limited to the demo versions, while playing the only character i liked was that 2 tailed red cat that is jibanyan

I grew up loving Pokémon but my littlest brother loved yokai watch but grew out of it and I’m surprised it actually scared the Pokémon company because they always seem untouchable when new games similar to them come out
I bought YKW4 from Japan outta desperation for more. I understood next to nothing and needed a translator, but it was pretty cool, and had a lot of fun mechanics and characters.
There’s a fan translation but you probably need to hack your Switch to play that one.
Gen 6 was fantastic but waaayyy too easy
Yeah I personally think all pokemon generations are good, but I think Gen 6 is for sure lower on my list

Is there any actual confirmation that things were inspired by Yokai Watch because everything here is just asserted as if it were fact? G4 also wasn't the last planned Generation for Pokemon??
Have you played the Yo Kai Watch games? It is pretty clear if you have played them, and I don’t think Pokémon would ever come out and say “we were inspired by our competition”. Also, as I mentioned, inspiration is a good thing!
As for the Gen 4 comment, I will admit this was an error on my part. There is a blog from before the release of D/P talking about how they wanted it to be the ultimate version of Pokémon and some translations of that article used words that implied that it was the last one. However on Game Freak’s blog site, it says the ULTIMATE Pokémon game.
@@readitandweeb the problem isnt that there are similarities between YW and Pokemon, its that the similarities between the two are asserted to be intentional when the Pokemon staff have never said so- especially unusual when most past interviews with GAME FREAK staff talk about their inspirations ad nauseum
