  • In this video we fly one of the most challenging approaches in the US. Join me as we fly the RNAV (GPS)-F approach to RWY 15 in low visibility at the Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (KASE). Steveo1kinevo flew this approach as part of his annual recurrent training at SIMCOM in Orlando Florida (link below). Thanks to Microsoft Flight Simulator we can fly the same approach in similar weather conditions and experience the excitement spotting the runway approach lights. This is a 43 nautical mile flight that takes about 15 minutes in the TBM 930. Complete flight plan and instructions given throughout the flight.

Thanks for the great video Sir. I had dozens of flights into ASE before the VOR approach based on DBL was established (which is pretty much matches the current RNAV GPS-F) . I heard Aspen Airways had a private microwave landing system (MLS) back then but I'm sure they weren't sharing. Before the approach was established center would vector you up the valley and assign 14,000 MSL. If you didn't see the ground it was divert to Eagle or Rifle. When I was flying the old 20 series Lear Jets in there on that VOR approach and the weather was at or near minimums you had to make sure you arrived at the MAP fully configured for landing for the decent to the runway or you would have for go missed for sure. You stirred up memories of great flying times for me Sir. Thanks again. I subscribed and look forward for more of your fine videos.

Thanks for your terrific comments and the subscription. So cool to hear these real world stories matched up to my videos ... and that is what this channel is all about. How exciting to fly the legendary Lear jet! Glad the simulator can bring back such vivid memories. Blue skies Hank!

Enjoyed the video. Thanks for posting it. I do have several questions. I am still learning.
Why did you activate only the first leg of the plan? Is that standard procedure?
When you set the rate of climb/descent, does that free you from having the adjust the speed manually?
Once under the AP, why did you have to enter the desired heading? Isn't it in the plan?
Also, why did you have to manually adjust the altitude? Isn't it already in the plan?
Why did you turn on NAV mode mid-flight, rather than from the beginning?
Why did you disengage the AP so early?
Your answers will be helpful to me (perhaps to others, too).
Looking forward to more videos from you.

Thanks for watching with interest! Here are the answers:
Why did you activate only the first leg of the plan? Is that standard procedure?
When you activate the NAV mode when the AP is on, the aircraft will fly that leg. When the plane reaches the waypoint at the end of the leg it will automatically fly the next leg within the flight plan. Yes, this is standard providing you activate NAV mode within the first leg of the flight. We needed to fly headings outside of the flight plan before actually flying the first leg.
When you set the rate of climb/descent, does that free you from having the adjust the speed manually?
No, you have to adjust the speed manually. No auto throttle. When descending, you must pull back on the speed or you will be overspeed very quickly.
Once under the AP, why did you have to enter the desired heading? Isn't it in the plan?
We started off in HDG (heading) mode, not NAV mode. The plane will fly in the direction of the set HDG when you turn on the AP. The departure calls for flying in a HDG of 343 right after liftoff. We switched to NAV mode when flying on the 273 direction (to intercept the 303 radial). I switched the AP from HDG to NAV mode just before intercepting the 303 radial.
Also, why did you have to manually adjust the altitude? Isn't it already in the plan?
Unfortunately the G3000 unit in MSFS will not automatically switch to the new desired height. I entered the values in the flight plan just as a reminder for the different altitudes during the flight.
Why did you turn on NAV mode mid-flight, rather than from the beginning?
Because we started in HDG mode at the first part of the flight.
Why did you disengage the AP so early?
I wanted full control of the plane and could adjust the speed and direction more quickly during the steep descent. If the AP messed up (for lack of a better term) there would not be enough time or distance to correct the approach after ALLIX.
Hope this helps. You will get a feel for the AP capabilities with practice!
      Thanks again!
FYI We fly to the HDG of 343 after liftoff to avoid apposing traffic (landing in the opposite direction) on a 5 mile final for RWY 15.

Superb! and very close to real life. What visibility, cloud layer and ceiling settings did you use?

Thanks very much Daniel for watching and commenting. I set the clouds to overcast and dropped the bottom layer down to about 1000’. It is great fun practicing in IMC conditions. Please do consider a subscription. Cheers!
