  • There might not be many reasons to downgrade Windows Pro to Home but for the few instances when its necessary it would be nice if it could be done without reloading and loosing your data and programs. That's what I'm showing you how to do today. We will download a Windows 11 Pro machine to Windows 11 Home without loosing data.

Since you've been repairing computers for so long I would be curious to see a video about all the software that you think a computer technician should have. Also, all of the tools you think they should always carry. Keep your videos coming! Cheers!

    I started out at a Big Box store at some point, and noticed policies required a fresh install of Windows on some hardware that made it's way into the store. I have used a similar method to this with ISO's in the past, and I'm glad to see that they still work. Keep up the great content for everyone. We all need the helpful steps you provide in these videos!😊

    Loved your video... I totally agree about being self employed... I've been successfully self employed in IT and all I would say to anyone considering it, is get started and be honest with yourself with the difference between what you know and what you speculate... You don't have to start with enterprise level experience jobs, just start with home users and gradually increase from there...
    There is definitely a huge market out there....
    One more thing, take the time to give yourself a way to undo anything you're about to do.. (grab a backup first or work on a copy of the data)

    I have a fresh install of Windows 11 on my computer, which is how it shipped originally. It also says Windows 10 in the Registry. Likely because the NT version didn't actually change. If you look at command prompt, it still says windows 10.0.version.

    Choosing the wrong edition of Windows is pretty common in the corporate world as well; most admins want to install the "better" edition; and that even extends into the Server side as well, when an admin loads Datacenter edition instead of Standard. Many just won't ask because it would infer that they didn't know...

    One thing I would really love is a valid instruction set for transitioning an existing windows installation onto a hardware encrypted bit locker disk. Pretty much every source I have seen claims that either it would be very difficult, or essentially it's impossible, and I can't imagine why there isn't a method to do that. I would really love to have that available.

    When you do this "in place install" does it remove all the files that comes with Windows Pro, like Bitlocker? I get the feeling leaves remints behind, but if it leaves a .OLD file from the previous windows, then you can just nuke that and you're good.
    Oh as for people who work for geek squad, they are often restricted on what they can do when dealing with customer's computers. Mostly to cover their asses, so they adopt archaic and simple procedures depending on the problem, and they tend to use them for FAR too long.. long after proper solutions and fixes have been made by vendors, or even by Microsoft.

    How can you change the Windows 7 boot screen ?
    I used to work for a bank and the boot screen didn't say Windows 7, it had the banks name and the login and password boxes and it had a message display after login that said the machine was property of the bank.
    Then the normal desktop would appear
    I would really like to know how they changed the boot screen and put in their own jpg or background and how they put in the box with their message after login before the desktop came up.

    The reason you cannot use the Pro Key to activate the Home version is because all of the Pro version contents are still in Home they are just dormant. The Pro version key just unlocks that additional functionality. There for if you have the Pro version you already have the Home version just with all the features unlocked.

    I understand that it's better to "fix" an issue rather than do a clean install, but I find as apart of preventative maintenance to do annual clean installs of my OS like spring cleaning your home that I run into fewer problems with my PCs. I do it not to fix an issue, since often you have data you need to save/recover. I do it to keep things tidy and prevent issues from occurring, since installing/uninstalling apps and using "cleaners" or other apps that supposedly "clean" or boost performance really really don't actually do that, compared to a clean install of your OS.

      @@comicalhexical no that only deals with windows system files, not the junk data left over after months or years of installing/uninstalling games and apps that aren't apart of windows it self.
      Uninstall will not remove files created by the user from the game or app, such as game saves, configs, mods, since it's considered user-made and isn't included in the uninstall manifest to be deleted.

    • @comicalhexical
      @comicalhexical 3 місяці тому

      @@fragalot if you're installing/uninstalling tons of apps in the year then you have an issue of storage space and your time would be better suited buying a bigger drive. There's no reason for you to be installing all these apps if you're just going to be uninstalling them in the future.

    • @fragalot
      @fragalot 3 місяці тому

      @@comicalhexical When why does the "uninstall" option even exist in the first place? It's not about storage. There's no point in leaving games and apps installed if I'm done playing them, or I find an alternative app or just don't need it anymore.
      I built my own NAS for long-term storage, and I have about 2TB of space on my main PC. Even if I did get a "bigger drive" I'd still have reinstall windows on it and all my other stuff.
      There's PLENTY of reasons to do clean installs on some sort of regular basis since it will eventually bog it self down since Uninstallers don't get everything, and always something gets corrupted, slows down, or just doesn't run properly.
      You can use your computer however you like, and I'll use mine how I like, there's no wrong or improper way of using it.

    Hello. No matter which usb storage I connect to my computer, I get a message
    (It's an error) And win11 gives you the option to scan and fix the problem.
    The problem is that this also happens with newly formatted external USB 2 hard drives. Also usb2 memory pen.
    Always when windows tries to scan and repair the disk, CMD (scandisk /f e:) it always says at the end that it failed and could not repair. During this process things on the disk were deleted and other things were done. Some of the content is now more damaged than before!
    On a usb hdd disk, I formatted with full format and afterwards I did a full sector scan without any errors. After copying a few files, win 11 started complaining. Why?
    One of the explanations is that it is windows.
    I have experienced this with 4 USB HDDs and several USB sticks

      Yes, Windows 10 and 11 use the same keys. I do the same as you for customers computers. It's a lot more convenient for my customers and for me setting it up to just image the old OS to the new computer. The only time it gets complicated is when imaging an MBR partition to a system that only boots UEFI. However, mbr2gpt can typically fix that but it makes a little bit more complicated. Especially if Windows doesn't already come with the storage controller drivers installed.

    Windows 11 shows as Windows 10 in the product name for compatibility with installed software.
    Win10 was supposedly the last version of Windows until MS came up with Win11, so developers checked for Windows 10 and didn't need new versions to check for Windows 11.
    Even a clean install of Windows 11 will show as Windows 10.

    You said your reasons for wanting to downgrade to Home is not being able to determine if a PC you're working on is activated for Pro or Home since it won't boot. I'm sure there are tools that let you figure this out. Isn't there a command line that you can use that tells you that info? What about booting off Hiren CD, or windows install media, run REGEDIT, then load the registry from the windows drive, and look in that same path you went into at 6:00 and just see what it is. Wouldn't that work, assuming the boot drive was still READABLE, just not bootable?

  • @michaeljavert4635
    @michaeljavert4635 3 місяці тому

    Not sure I understand the why. Windows 11 is the same as Windows 10. Like lipstick on a pig, and the only difference I notice in home or pro is the addition of bitlocker being able to be used in pro. I have the opposite problem. Whenever I have to reinstall my main P.C. and want pro, which I have, it defaults to home and I usually don't catch it until it's all installed, so I have to waste more time modifying the "Sources" folder. Otherwise, it doesn't ask me, and I am usually half conscious, as my normal state... Always some ferkakta mishigas I have to do.
    But great video anyway. Even if I don't understand why. Wondering if it works the other way. Like having home, when wanting pro and not wanting to do another total reinstall, IF not remembering to modify the "Sources" from the install files.
    Also, that "Update" is malarkey. And it takes a lot of time even when there's no connection to the Internet. Another thing I will change in Windows when I rise to power.

    So when we took the "free upgrade" to Windows 10 it had an expiration date attached to the generic product key? There's no going back to Windows 7, and this PC is too ancient for Windows 11. The problem is it locked me out of my network controls. I'm connected to...something, but it's fickle and microsoft is vague about what they expect me to do to continue using my PC long enough to research what I need to upgrade. It's like corporate ransomware. Might as well just give us a popup paywall so it's not such a headache to figure out. I called at least three scammers before I got actual Microsoft support. I might've paid to avoid the day I've had today...now I'm looking at just getting a Macintosh.

    You peeked my curiosity. When I built my computer, I installed Windows 11 Pro from scratch. It's never had any other operating system on it. When I go into the registry, it is identified as Windows 10 Pro......... Go figure.

    It's not a clean install but still you are replacing all system files from iso so I would still name it as reinstall - well, dirty reinstall.

    The reason that it says Windows 10 is because the kernel is the Windows 10 kernel. Windows 11 is just a rebrand of Windows 10 after the system requirements changed. Windows "12" will also be a rebrand of Windows 10. They built the kernel in such a way that they can just add to it instead of starting from scratch every time. The last guy in charge who just left decided to name it Windows 11 in a misguided attempt to reverse course. The new head is already rolling things back but is now stuck with the Windows 11 moniker.

      @@iftikhar-ii7cyWindows 10 Pro and 11 Pro are both free if you upgrade and in almost all Notebooks have a free Windows 11 Pro key
      And even then a Windows key is not that expensive
