Today's video is dedicated to exploring the (underrated?) easter egg synth engine in Mutable Instruments' Rings. I remember when I first discovered the secret synth. I fell in love with not only the sound, but the whole concept of hidden features. I wish more manufacturers would include such secret gems as it really adds to the mystique and magic of a module.

The jam at 7:00…. makes me feel like everything I do is important, like, watering my plants is vital and sophisticated
That Fat Mono Synth part! So. Funky. So. GOOD!! 😆❤🔥
Thanks enormously for your video, I've had Rings for 7 years and had absolutely no idea about any these 'hidden' functions. You've opened a new world to me!
Haha that must’ve been a pleasant discovery! ☺️
I been ignoring Rings lately because I've run out of ideas on how to patch it; same old same old. This video opens up a new world for this classic module. Thank you for doing this.
Glad to hear it! Hope you made some cool new patches! :)
Your Rings videos are always a highlight for me, they instantly rekindle my love for that module. Thanks a bunch!
Cheers man, making the videos has the same effect for me! lol
Ally, .. thanks.
This being a good example of depth that's built into many modules, of recent years. Like peeling an onion.
Just another fan here to thank you for your great videos. They're up there with the very best synth tutorials, and somehow you do that while simultaneously playing chill and listenable grooves. Please keep up the good work!
Thank you for your very kind words ☺️
listening to you enjoy stuff is just the best company while i'm working. thank you
Really love you walkthroughs, makes these modules much easier to understand! Also, serious Boards of Canada vibes on some of the easter egg sounds, love it
Thank you! and yes totally getting Boards of Canada vibes from this module!
Your content is always spectacular. The real world use in making music with your equipment is on display and very beneficial for people trying to understand the possibilities of these instruments.
Thank you! These things are for making music after all!
Thanks for the Easter egg demo. Love this. So chilled !
Thank you :)
I’m building a patch for an upcoming performance using Rings in the hidden mode and your video has given me so many directions to take my patch! Can’t wait to see what else you come up with!
Glad to help! I hope your performance went well :)
Wow, this is AMAZING had no idea that Rings could turn into a Roland, and it sounds SO GOOD, thanks so much🙌
That must have been a nice surprise! :D
love the mono synth sound!
That drone! Very inspiring and a good reminder that simple works extremely well
Cheers man! And yea sometimes simple is best!
Pretty good video, as always! Love Rings can´t get enough of this module, like you i guess. :)
Thank you! It's the gift that keeps on giving!
top quality content as per! keep it up!
Loved the chord drone parts. Really nice. Subbed.
Thank you :)
Please never stop producing content.😊
Haha! I hopefully won’t any time soon!
So good. Trying the Easter egg mode on my rings right now.
Cheers man! Hope you enjoyed it!
Absolute class!
My first Unperson video, and I am all in. Going to go get reacquainted with my Rings now.
Cheers man! Hope you had fun jammin with Rings again ☺️
excellent ! thank you
OMG, it just clicked! I was scratching that itch to get a reverb module... in all 3 modes, fx on audio can be used as a mono in/stereo out (verb/chorus/formant filter). Outs cancel eachother out in pseudo-stereo (phase issue) BUT you can either invert the phase on an out or hard pan L/R with a panning mixer like the Behringer 305. Super!
Are you saying you can use the rings fx to process external audio? 😃
@@TheUnperson Oh yes, my friend, that's exactly what i'm saying... all that and CV control over the wet/dry with the trimmer underneath :) That reverb is actually REALLY nice. No control over damping or time but still super useful. The formant filter is also really interesting on harmonics rich content like a buzzy oscillator or noise. It was like 2AM when I watched your vid and I had to go try the fx's before going to bed... at 4AM :)
That was fantastic 🎉
Thank you ☺️
Nice demo, well done. The Weird Vowel Filter Jam had strong Legowelt North Sea vibes. I think I read that the Easter Egg was based more on loosely modelling a string machine, like the Roland RS-09. But it sounds wavetableish, because the Brightness knob scans through the registrations, different volume balances the across the stack of partials, orderered by brightness.
Great track! I'm gonna have to delve a bit more into Legowelt - not too familiar with them!
@@TheUnperson Definitely check him out, a real synthesizer fanatic, but there's a visionary aspect that gives it's own special character. To my ear, he set out in the lineage of Drexciya and tracks like The Journey Home and Black Sea. Especially on a big early club electro of his, Disco Rout (Ghostly). But my favourites of his are Drexciyan like concept albums, but his own take, lo-fi, aged and crunchy, and full of great synth sounds: the Crystal Cult 2080 LP (title track and How I Live are good sample tracks); and the Paranormal Soul LP too. The bleepy, woozy, phasic track 'Elementz of Houz' is _beautiful_, could easily be a lost Chicago-Detroit connected classic. Transformation of the Universe is a lovely track too. It's worth knowing him for his free sample packs of his vintage synths on his very funky website. Love his JD-800, and others. There's some good full live performance videos and in-studio interviews elsewhere on UA-cam.
@@compucorder64good lookin' out
Holy shit I’ve been listening to 90s hip hop r&b and this would be a perfect baseline synth, thank you!!!
haha this thing can absolutely do retro hiphop and rnb!
a e s t h e t i c, that chords mode. NICE !!
cheers man!
I could listen to this man talk about MI forever. Please never stop
haha cheers man!
Hi. Thanks for your great videos. There is a alternative firmware out where you can switch to easter egg with pressing just one button. And many more great features.
I have that firmware installed and it’s great. The mini elements and the frequency lock features are game changer.
@@lifeformmusic3301 thanks. I have to install the new version. I have read about it. I already have the alternative firmware from this guy on plaits. As you say, frequency lock is a dream and i thing for rings even much better. Tuning rings is not the funniest part on this great module. 😅
Is the alternative firmware for Rings stable? I loved the alt firmware for the OG tides, but found it crashed a lot, especially in PLL mode. Would have to restart my system a lot.
@@Space_pulse I have found it to be stable
I haven't heard about this! :O will look into it now!
The moment you did the switch, the word “Casio” sprang into my brain..
This is not a bad thing IMHO..👍
Definitely not a bad thing... there's some classic casio's i'd absolutely love to own!
@@TheUnperson there’s shades ofin the MN Teleharmonic
@@outaspaceman i used to own the telharmonic and i really miss it. My friend has one that I'm gonna try steal for a video!
@@TheUnperson I have one I not had time to get into since DB got put in the case..
Don’t get me started about my Casio collection..
I had Rings years ago and i know there might be another hidden mode, with a 2 OP FM synth and a Reverb at the Position knob.
There is indeed! Holding down the right button when in the green mode unleashes the fm mode. It’s a lot of fun ☺️
Sorry if this has been answered. But I am just getting into modular and bought a nifty bundle. I notice that you are using a different power supply. I'm curious as to why that is? I also saw on one of the listings on Amazon says they have bad PSUs but that is the only place I have seen that mentioned. Should I be worried?
When you started with the vowel/formant filter, my mind went to S&H triggered with the note, or through a clock divider. I don’t have Rings to try it, but I wonder if the VCV Rack version has that mode.
It should do! That's a really cool idea - I'm gonna try it out!
Thanks for this mate. Fascinating. I'll never part with my Rings. 👍
me too mate!
Somehow “like” isn’t strong enough ❤
haha thank you!! :D
How did i not know about this hidden mode????
Rings is probably the most versatile of all MI’s. And you can double that by installing ‘mini-elements’ firmware. I was thinking about getting a second one but they are out of production by now 😢
I only recently heard about this alt-firmware. I'm gonna have to check it out!
@@TheUnperson so it seems the only down side is this firmware runs at 32khz internal sample rate rather than 48khz. Maybe it can be modified in the future to run at 48khz.
I have to ask this stupid question: How do you revert to the original Rings mode? Because now whenever I power off my system and power it on again, I'm still in this easter egg mode.
Hey! You could try a long hold on the right button. If that doesn’t work then the same knob configuration with a long press will do it :)
@@TheUnperson Thank you!
hi - wonderful video --- What is the layout of the rack ? all the modules.. ? I have Rings and maths, and am looking to pair them with interesting modules..what are some good ideas? _Roderick
I would recommend some effects! In this video I am using the Data Bender (glitch style effect) and the FX Aid (multi-fx), but there are so many cool effects modules to choose from. Beads is a lot of fun too.
How do you exit the mode?
The same way you got in :P
Ahh of course. Also any idea if the nanoRings clones typically have the same secret mode? Specifically the Jack Plugg one?
Daft question, but how do you get back out of easter egg mode after using it?!😅
same way you got in :P
@@TheUnperson Thanks! Thought I better find out before I tried it! 😅
Great video...I have this module and marbles, clouds, plaits and all I can get out of them are tuneless beeps and boops,,nothing musical like this at all.
thank you! Are you using a keyboard or sequencer? Rings and Plaits are very musical modules :)
@@TheUnperson I use both,,you are using CV and gate from keystep.? I been trying that with rings,,getting somewhere now...how do I switch back OUT of easter egg modes??
w...how do we switch back OUT of east egg mode ? oldd right button again for 3 sec?
