During filming and editing of My Modular Journey - Episode 7 (Monsoon), it became clear to me there were no real "deep dives" of Monsoon, a successor to the popular Clouds module by Mutable Instruments, and I even put a note in my video that I feel I should take a deeper look into this module for the benefit of the modular world. Monsoon (and it's siblings) is quite amazing.

Slight mistake, you said the one knob on clouds blended all the parameters together and you couldn't CV them, this is wrong. There was a button press that changed which parameter the blend knob was altering, and the other parameters would stay at their last set amount, and the cv in was applied to whichever parameter was adjusted last

Cool, thank you for the correction. I never owned Clouds, and only went by what the Monsoon manual said on Page 5: "While Clouds provides a single knob and a blend-mode-switch button, Monsoon gives each blend parameter its own knob and its own CV modulation input."

Update: I am in the final editing stages of the remaining 5 modes of Monsoon, and hope to upload them soon. I am grateful to anyone who found this series helpful, because I sure did! Diving deep into Monsoon has taught me so much more about the module as well as Modular Synthesis itself. I love this Journey!

What a fantastic explanation of Monsoon. Thank you.
It has helped me feel far more in control of my own Monsoon module.

One of the most useful things you can say in any deep dive is what CV input voltages are expected or allowed. Bipolar or unipolar. Mutable Instruments modules seem to be all over the map on this. Some things can be 5V, some are 8. OCHD blasts things with 10V bipolar when unattenuated if I recall. Pam's offers the ability to reduce it's output by percentage, which is very useful.

Extremely useful video (series) about Monsoon (notably, different knowledge from original Clouds).

I just binged all your other videos before coming to this one, which is a little odd because it was your first.
I've had such a hard time wrapping my brain around Monsoon, mostly it just makes things really muddy and I never have any idea what is happening. Other times it gets absolutely bonkers and makes scary sounds, and again I have no idea what is happening. Sometimes that's fine, but I knew I was barely scratching the surface of what I could make it do.
Thank you so very much for making these videos. They help a ton and I will be coming back to reference them frequently.
The only tip I have to offer is to really attenuate your modulators, on Monsoon more than most modules or else you get the angry jet fighter monster from the Shimmer in the book/movie Annihilation. Honestly that's what this module reminds me of most - The Shimmer and how it warps and changes and destroys everything.
I really appreciate all the time and work you put into making these videos. Can't believe it took so long for someone to do it.

Thank you! This is the best tutorial on the interface and their functions I've watched so far. I bought a Typhoon recently (first module along with a uZeus) and the documentation on it is sparse and undetailed IMO. Very clear audio (except the end stuff.. adding a compressor-limiter might help next time) and taking your time with each function really showed how the grains interact and now I understand a few things that I couldn't from reading and noodling or from other videos that blurred functions or the input audio was too busy. Thanks a lot for posting this!

Very nice walk-through. I'm going to look at all your Monsoon videos! I had an original Clouds, then a Grayscale Microcell, then a uBurst and now a Monsoon built by Calsynth. I chose the Monsoon over the Typhoon because I rarely used the input and output VCAs and to save space.
One thing I am still not clear about is the relation of the Pitch to the grain size. When I raise the pitch the grains seem to come faster, along with the change in pitch. Is this correct, or am I imagining it?
One thing you didn't demonstrate is the pitch shifting with feedback. With pitch centered, feedback can run away quickly. But if you raise or lower the pitch, each time through the feedback loop, the pitch is increased or decreased. This greatly reduces feedback runaway and it sounds somewhat like shimmer reverb.

So, can you freeze a sound in the buffer and still be running audio through, playing on top of the freeze? Or no

    • @VisionsMusicGroup
      @VisionsMusicGroup  2 роки тому +2

In fact, yes. The Mix (wet/dry) knob controls whether you're allowing live audio to come through, or just the buffer playback. In the middle, you can hear both.

I'm definitely a latte drinking soyboy :-) My love of Juno chorus goes back 40 years, when I bought my first keyboard ever: the Juno 60. I miss it to this day (software/clones notwithstanding). Thank you for watching!
