I'm 22. I've been on tretinoin since I was 18, because my dermatologist prescribed it for a case of super bad acne. I didn't even know about the Retinol hype in the skincare community until about six months ago, when I saw someone rave about tretinoin and I was like "hold up, what?? I've been using that for years!" I use 0.05% Retin-A and weirdly I never had a purging/peeling period, didn't even know it was supposed such an intense treatment! Weirdly enough, now that my acne has gotten significantly better and I've gotten more into skincare, I've been leaving Retin-A aside in favor of non pharmaceutical products. Maybe when I get older I'll get back into it, but for now I see no use for it for me in the short term! Thanks for the video Renee!

the line of retinol products from The Ordinary work perfectly fine. In my experience I've seen the exact same results from The Ordinary as any high-end expensive brand. My favourite used to be the Granactive emulsion, but they stopped selling it in Canada, so I've switched over to the squalane version and it's been awesome. I saw results in one week.
I just started tretinoin 0.005 this past month (1x a week). Prior to that, I had been using the Granactive Retinoid 2% in Squalane from The Ordinary a few times a week for two months. This week, I added one more day on with Retin-A (tretinoin). I'll do it on Saturdays and Wednesdays (2x a week) for a month before going to 3x a week the following month. I use the Hada Labo Super Hyaluronic Hydrating Cream + CeraVe Moisturizing Cream on my skin (letting that dry down first) before I apply a pea-sized amount of Retin-A (tretinoin): avoiding eyes and lips. I wash my face with CeraVe Salicylic Acid Cleanser in the morning + sunscreen after my morning routine + another time during the day. So far, so good.
Brilliant discussion about retinol variants. I'd never heard about Bakuchiol so thanks for sharing that. There are so many "new names" in the industry that I'm thinking many are probably gimmicky and I'm glad you've brought up this one. I hope it is useful to skincare. I am a huge fan of the Ordinary and have been since watching one of your discussions about 3 years ago on it. Thank you so much for what you provide in this channel. the ordinary retinol formulations are awesome. no discomfort whatsoever and results are instantly felt and seen. using the 0.5% at the moment and i also alternate it with their alpha lipoic acid which is another genius product of theirs. their products are just the most simple and legit in the market. the hype is absolutely real.
Oh my gosh, this video is very helpful. I've been using adapalene differin on my acne areas (which is a big portion of my face), and I've noticed that my skin "thinned" and has become very sensitive, even putting cetaphil kind of burns. Now I know that my skin badly reacts to adapalene or maybe retinoids in general, I'll use it with more caution from now on.

Hi Gothamista, sooo nice to see you again. I am wanting to try a retinol product and am leaning towards a product with bakuchiol. This video was so thorough and interesting! Retinol is a complex subject and you explained everything so clearly. Thanks and look forward to the next video. 💖💖

So happy to hear your experience with the Curology Tret mirrors my own (we even have the same prescription mix!). I was on 0.025% from the pharmacy for nine months and my skin was utterly decimated; within two weeks of beginning Curology my skin was back to beautiful normal. I recommend it to everyone who's considering trying Tret. ❤️
I love Curology! I started using it last year and as my skin adjusted I was able to increase the percentage of Tretinoin. My acne really cleared up and my fine lines softened as well.
I’ve used prescription Renova for years after an initial period of irritation I can use it every night with no irritation. This was the least irritating prescription product I tried Enjoyed the video good information❤️
I recently bought the Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid 2% for some fine forehead lines (I'm only 20 but I live in Australia lol) and help with acne and I've only used it twice and I've noticed such a difference when I wake up. i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
F Earless make sure you’re wearing sunscreen daily and reapplying! Makes more of a difference than retinoids and if you’re not using sunscreen your retinoid will make you sun sensitive and make things worse not better.
F Earless I had to look up fortnight to make sure it was 2 weeks since that phrase is never used where I live 😂 I would definitely work your way up to at least every night at minimum. Retinoid work at preventing skin aging but only when you’re using them consistently.
Re: Curology--they actually gave me an EVEN LOWER percentage of tret than you: I got 0.009%, and it has made my skin super happy. They're a great option for retinoid beginners.
What a brilliantly timely video..In the last couple if months I have bumped up my Retin A to 0.1% and I do feel that it is a bit too irritating for my sensitive skin...so I am really looking forward to your next videos, as your views are always welcome Thank you for another interesting video.
Hello gorgeous. I was waiting for a day you’d talk about retinols. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts. I am eagerly awaiting your next part of this discussion. Take care. Wishing you happiness and great health 💕
Everyone is different. I am using compounded tretinoin at .2%, that’s the correct percentage, it’s not a mistake. I have no irritation at all, except when my face isn’t dry and I have applied it on wet skin. I use it from hairline to nipples, on, around and behind ears, and all around my eyes, up to my eyelashes. (Don’t get it in the eye!) My dermatologist told me I don’t need fractional laser or any Botox or fillers. Tretinoin is the thing I would take with me on a deserted island. Thank you for your in depth review ❤️
About 2 years ago I wanted to start experimenting with retinoids, so I ordered The Ordinary's retinol 0,2% in squalene. I was so careful, diluted it with more squalene, removed it an hour after, but it still irritated my skin so badly it looked burned. I was so scared that I haven't tried until I saw your video about some Ordinary products. I ordered the granative retinoid 2% emulsion, and my skin absolutely loves it! I used it once a week, and it does magic with my dry, flaky, sensitive skin. I'm so glad I didn't give up
I bought The Ordinary granactive retinoid for my mother and after 3 months her melasma (+30 years old) started fading and new, plump and beautiful skin emerged. I just can't believe it! I use Sundays Ridley one but it's too strong for me. Thanks for the summary, is informative and fun to watch as usual...
Yes, tretinoin is very drying and if your skin is moist, when you apply it, it will feel like it's burning. But you can use it in conjunction with pure oils, such as rose, jojoba or argan. These will substantially reduce the drying effect while not reducing the efficacy.
Thank you so much for all the helpful information!! This definitely made me more informed without being overwhelmed with all the information on the internet about the various retinoic acid derivatives. I'm new to skincare, and I've been trying to gradually add products to improve my skin (double cleansing, toning, essence, moisturizers, etc..) and as I'm entering my late twenties I've been thinking a lot about starting Retinol treatments. I will probably start with a lower percentage granactive retinoid emulsion based on your review and explanation. Thanks again so much!!
This video came at the perfect time for me.. I’m actually on the Curology program myself, (same ingredients that you were prescribed) and I’m on week 8. Still experiencing that rough phase of purging/occasional little whiteheads coming in patches around my chin & sides of my mouth, and the dry flakiness in my skin is REAL. On top of my usual essences & serums, I’ve been having to incorporate some heavy duty hydrating serums, essences and masks, with calming & healing ingredients like aloe, Centella asiatica, Cica and loading up on the fatty acid Ceramide moisturizers & oils etc. This is my first time using a tretinoin rather than retinoids (previously used TO retinol in Squalane, and differin gel in my teenage years for acne) and I was curious as to how long this phase would last! I know it’ll be different for everyone, but it is kind of frustrating when you are going through that phase especially during the winter...just praying that it’s all worth it in the end! In the beginning of my journey I slowly incorporated the curology into my routine, and then I used it every night for 21 days as part of a challenge that curology invited me to do. After the 21 days I decided to scale back to using it only several nights a week, alternating with other actives (AHAs & bhas) and having 2 nights that I skip actives all together and just do a sheet mask etc. curious if you feel that is a good way to carry on or should I try using the Curology for several days in a row and then having a break day in between & save the other actives for the end of the week. I’ve been playing around with different regiments to see what gives me the least amount of reaction/sensitivity and overall dryness. Any feedback would be much appreciated and I’m looking forward to hearing more about using retinol!
I looked at the ingredient lists for the Osmosis products you recommend and was disappointed to see fragrant oils which can be very sensitizing. I can't figure out why they would be included with a retinol. Can you help elucidate?
I'm using their correct serum currently, it has citrusy smell that comes from essential oils but i haven't experienced irritation from using it every evening
BEST VIDEO ABOUT THESE!! I'm soooo glad someone said it about the ordinary one! I have been using for months and didn't see anything but I do love the texture of it 😝
Hi Renee, How are you? I hope your doing well. This was such a outstanding review, you do such great research for us and Thank You. I am on Retin A 0.1, I have been on Retin A since I was in my twenties off and on. I finally got back on it when I turned 50, so that was 10 years ago. I had to start all over with the 0.25 and gradually got back up to 0.1. I took my sweet time about it too. Now I only use it 3 times a week and that is good for me. I also put cacay oil on after the retin A is put on my face, I at least wait 35 minutes before I put the cacay oil on though. I notice when I do use the cacay oil over the retin A, I do not peel, if I don't use the cacay oil, I peel. I really like the cacay oil with the retin A. Well Renee, I hope you have found your holy grail for Retin A. Please Take Care, I just Love you, and God Bless You 😇💞
This is the best overview video I've seen. Bravo and thank you. Differin didn't provide antiaging benefits for me. Paula's Choice 1% retinol booster smooths my skin quickly. It is my first skincare application each night. I don't add it to any other product. I use Paula's Choice ceramide enriched moisturizer over it.
@@susanmcf1 do your ever tried the clinical 1% retinol treatment? Which is better and how long does it last? What is your opinion compared to tretinoin
This is great! I have been using retinol for years and I still have uncertainty about it. One thing I am certain of is starting slowly! Can't wait for more🧡 Thank you Renee.
I very much enjoy your reviews backed up with science and logic. One of my favorite You Tubers is Angie on Hot and Flashy. She's been on You Tube for maybe 6 years and when she began, at about age 50, she was not using Retin A. But she's been using tretinoin for about 5 years and is using the Curology now, so it's interesting to see the improvement in her skin today compared to her first videos.
Please do a video on which step to put retinol with k-beauty night routine! Very confused where it should go. I put in on after toning and Missha first essence. Wait as long as I can then followed by moisturizer. Can't wait on the follow up video
Great video. Please, please do a video or part II of it as how can we incorporate these variants in our skin routine. And for how long we need to keep on using it, when we need to take a break and what shouldn’t be used with them.
I’ve been using for a month The Ordinary’s Granactive Retinoid 2% in squalane every other day. I hope it’s right. It’s not irritating my skin at all. But not sure whether to use any other skincare products with it
Mam, I was really fair before but as per time passed I started getting tanned because I hate wearing sunscreens, love going out, roaming and now I am tanned and now I feel like I should have wear sunscreen before 😖 I want that previous skin 😭 Can you please make a video on how to overcome with this tanning problem?? Plzzzzzzzzzz 💕 Love your videos and love you 😘😘😘
I suppose the only tan that's not damaging your skin is a fake tan. If you find they make you look orangey and not matching your skin try to find one with erythrulose instead of or in conjunction with DHA. DHA is the most common (and cheaper) tanner, bit especially pale skin quickly turns an unappealing orange hue with it.
I can’t wait for the follow up video re: complimentary skincare with retinol. I am sensitive and spent several years getting my skin used to tretinoin .05% every other night. My derm found precancerous spots on my face from old early 20’s sunbathing (ugh) and I had to undergo a topical chemotherapy treatment which was agonizing but successful-now I’m having a hard time getting back to where I was with the tretinoin. Stuck on .025% every third evening. I’m not rushing it, it’s been about 8 months since the calcipotrienne + fluorouracil treatment I had to do and that’s where I’m at. You had a great video several months ago where you said using the Paula’s Choice niacinamide booster helped with your skin tolerance-I think that has helped me. I’m still going slow and steady lol...
Im not gonna lie, I havent watched your videos for a month or so because I got accepted to a top 5 University in the UK ($$$) and you always manage to sell me at least 5 products in each video. Ive been in the market for a retinol lately though and theyre insanely confusing and worrying to me but I knew exactly who to come to :) . hope everything has been well with you! I remember when you started your journey with rets I cant believe that was 2 years ago already
I don't understand how you can have rosacea and sensitive skin but then love all the fragrance-containing products you have to try out for your job! Anything with fragrance will be ok for a week for me, then after that I turn into a flushing tomato, covered in itchy hives. But it's usually ok for a little bit - until it's not! I would love to know how you get around this - do you take anti-histamines or are you a magician with foundation and lighting? I love all the things that smell nice - would love to know how you can actually use them without turning into a red, itchy mess!
I am 20. I have acne prone sensitive skin and I have never used vitamin A in my skincare routine. Which product would you recommend for beginners like me?
Thank you for this! I suffer from mild rosacea and my skin is so sensitive. I was using Paulas Choice retinol after building up to 1% over the years and my skin couldn't handle it. I thought I would never be able to use retinol again. I can't wait to try these!
i am currently using retinoic acid 1% for almost 2 months now, and believe me my skin is good!!! my dermatologist recommended it to me. my pores looked smaller, my ice picked scars healed, but not totally. you will experience purging after 4 week, and believe me, i lost hope because i thought the medication was not working instead it makes my pimples come back, but when i visited my dermatologist, its normal.
is The ordinary's granactive retinoid a good start for acne-prone,sensitive skin for beginners like me? Im on my 20's and I want to use vitamin A for my acne and also preventing fine lines
Been using osmosis correct retinaldehyde serum for 2-3 weeks and it definitely improved my acne-prone skin, made pores clearer and smaller and brightened skin tone. I wasn't using a retinoid prior, experienced some dehydration during adjustment period but it's manageable and now I'm successfully using it every night alternating with acids in the morning every single day. Osmosis serum contains some essential oils but it hasn't stopped me from enjoying it, in fact i look forward to applying it because of intoxicating citrus smell. I am finished with 7ml travel size tube and already got full 30ml waiting for me
Yassss!!! I missed your vids so much, Renee!! You know so much and your info videos are so practical and insightful! As a woman around her middle 20's and with acne this helps out so much! So thank you!!
Hey. Very informative video. For a person who has never used a retinol product before, should I start with a 0.2% retinol by the ordinary or the granactive 2% emulsion given that the granactive is supposed to be nonirritating.
I enjoyed this review! There is one minor thing that rubbed me the wrong way, though. The goal should not be to get rid of stratum corneum, at least not every day. It IS the topmost layer the epidermis and made of dead skin cells, but it acts protectively. Instead it's best to get rid of only the upper layer of stratum corneum, called stratum disjunctum - dead skin cells that have begun peeling off on their own by severing junctions with the neighbouring cells.
Hey Gothamista, can you also talk about teenagers to people in their late 20s who use adapalene for acne, should they continue using that after the acne is gone, for the anti aging benefits or should they level up to tretinoin or maybe some other retinol? Like how to transition? And loved the video 😊💕
Adapalene has no data nor much efficacy in anti aging. The friend could continue using it safely to continue with the glow, mild exfoliation and acne prevention. But if they really wanted to focus on anti aging, imo adapalene isn’t where I would put my focus.
It’s believed that adapalene should have similar anti-aging effects to tretinoin based on its mechanism of action. Also, I've heard from a few derms that it can be used for an anti aging benefit. If you're looking for an OTC retinol/retinoid, adapalene makes the most sense given that it's an FDA regulated drug and it's efficacy has been clinically proven.
I feel like I’m doing something wrong because I was given a script for trentinon at its lowest % for my acne, with no skin irritation but not long after applying it my skin went into overdrive with oil production and it just got worse as the night went on. Really weird.
@@Puglover130 do you have any links to studies to back it up? I'd like to read it, bcz as far as I know some dermatologists consider adapalene or differin to be as effective as tretinoin. What I feel is that it's still way better than other retinols and derivatives. Also I have Sensitive skin so I fear tretinoin might wreak havoc.
thanks for your video :) do you think the retinol 0.2 is more effective than the retinoid emulsion 2%? I have been using the emulsion for about 3 months now to manage my acne, however I don't really see huge results... so I was wondering if I should maybe switch to the ordinary's retinols... what are your thoughts on this?
Ive been using products with Retinol for year. I use ordinary 1% in squalane and alternate with using differin gel. I going to test out the new product from DE but I am interested in your recommendation and want to try out the Osmosis Pur, which strength do you think will suit me. I think my skin is ready for an upgrade.
Thanks so much for making this video! Its so informative and the timing is perfect! Im thinking about trying a vitamin A moisturizer or serum for the first time but I am not sure how long it typically takes to see results or how long the effects will last. Does retinol require perpetual use to maintain results?
I’ve been using the osmosis Renew for about a year I do love it I like that I can use it morning and night. I see that you’re using the Medik8 now. I was wondering what the differences in the 2. Also can you use the medik8 in the morning? Thank you for another great video
Adapalene (Differin) sounds like a great alternative since its an Rx strength derivative but OTC, but I notice you don't gravitate towards it. Does it only work for acne and not anti-aging?
Whether or not Adapalene has anti-aging effects is kind of up in the air right now. It should 'theoretically' have anti-aging effects but there hasn't been as much research as Tretinoin or Retinol. The research that is there claims that Adapalene has anti-aging effects but some people might prefer using other retinoids that have been more studied for that purpose :)
My mom is looking for something for her fine lines. She's 50, pretty normal skin. We have good genes, so she looks like she's in her late 30's. She said she's specifically worried about around her eyes, but her skin is so sensitive that I worry about starting her on any type of retinoid. I am thinking about getting her started with the ordinary .5 in squalane since my skin LOVES squalane and I responded very well to it. I am probably going to "level up" soon to something stronger, but I want to start her out in the most gentle way I can. This video was super helpful in that it kind of solidified my decision. But like you said, I'm worried about her eventually using anything around her eyes at all. The whole trial and error thing makes me nervous with her because she IS so sensitive. If you have thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Otherwise, just wish me luck, I guess. 😂😂 Love your videos, Renee. They're always perfect timing.
PS. I'm starting her on the klairs midnight calming cream before I ever start her on the retinol to prep her skin for a few weeks. Then I'm going to have her introduce 1 drop of the retinol into the calming cream at night. Plus, of course, I've FINALLY convinced her to use a daily sunscreen since I told her if she wants to use retinol that she has zero choice in the matter. Lol Let me know if you think I'm being too aggressive!
We cannot get Differin or any other in the UK. I too wish to start. I'm using Dr D gross eye serum and cream with ferulic acid. Had samples and liked it for 1 week or so, so I bought them. 10days in my eyes are more creapy the before and feel dry. Any suggestion? Suppose to be within reason no reaction....

I recently bought the Ordinary's Granactive Retinoid 2% for some fine forehead lines (I'm only 20 but I live in Australia lol) and help with acne and I've only used it twice and I've noticed such a difference when I wake up. i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I really enjoy the immediate effects, how hydrating it is. This is a good place to start - Its how I did!
F Earless how often do you use it? And in what order?
F Earless make sure you’re wearing sunscreen daily and reapplying! Makes more of a difference than retinoids and if you’re not using sunscreen your retinoid will make you sun sensitive and make things worse not better.
@S Khan I use it maybe once a fortnight after toning and then apply moisturiser. I don't use any other actives with it
F Earless I had to look up fortnight to make sure it was 2 weeks since that phrase is never used where I live 😂 I would definitely work your way up to at least every night at minimum. Retinoid work at preventing skin aging but only when you’re using them consistently.
Re: Curology--they actually gave me an EVEN LOWER percentage of tret than you: I got 0.009%, and it has made my skin super happy. They're a great option for retinoid beginners.
how much did you pay for it Mara?
Thank you so much for including us! Xoxo
(Don’t get it in the eye!)
My dermatologist told me I don’t need fractional laser or any Botox or fillers. Tretinoin is the thing I would take with me on a deserted island.
Thank you for your in depth review ❤️
Yes Renee! I am obsessed with retinoids and skin care and loving your content.
So happy to read this!
I'm so glad I didn't give up
Thank you so much Renee for the new upload!!! And finally, a curology review by my most trusted UA-cam skincare source!
I'm having amazing results with Curology. I mix it with a moisturizer since I have sensitive skin. It still works beautifully.
Thank you so much for this! I've genuinely been trying to understand this and I haven't found anyone explaining Retinoids as clearly! Xx
BEST VIDEO ABOUT THESE!! I'm soooo glad someone said it about the ordinary one! I have been using for months and didn't see anything but I do love the texture of it 😝
Thank you for your opinions. My question is,if we can not use retinol next to the eye are, how can we get rid of the wrinkles? (in the 30's) :/
Hi susan, may i know how long could your booster last if you use it everyday?
Using 1 pump, I would say 2 months. A year ago I switched to tretinoin.
@@tanyukheng1828 about 1-2 months
You are the most wonderful UA-camr. I never not learn something from you. U👩🏫 me👩🏾🎓😁👍🏼
I am so happy to hear that! Thank you so much!!
Such a wealth of information. You are amazing. Thank you, Renee!!
It’s like you can hear my thoughts and then come through every time! I was just hoping for a video from you about Retinoids!
Love all these categorized videos you do! Really needed this
I JUST got into retinoids...and this video pops up....thank you!
Thank you for this! I suffer from mild rosacea and my skin is so sensitive. I was using Paulas Choice retinol after building up to 1% over the years and my skin couldn't handle it. I thought I would never be able to use retinol again. I can't wait to try these!
I love that you mentioned Osmosis products. I’m a huge fan of many of their products.
i am currently using retinoic acid 1% for almost 2 months now, and believe me my skin is good!!! my dermatologist recommended it to me. my pores looked smaller, my ice picked scars healed, but not totally. you will experience purging after 4 week, and believe me, i lost hope because i thought the medication was not working instead it makes my pimples come back, but when i visited my dermatologist, its normal.
is The ordinary's granactive retinoid a good start for acne-prone,sensitive skin for beginners like me?
Finalllyyy, I've been waiting for this!!❤️❤️❤️
YAAASSSS... THE QUEEN IS BACK
Hey. Very informative video. For a person who has never used a retinol product before, should I start with a 0.2% retinol by the ordinary or the granactive 2% emulsion given that the granactive is supposed to be nonirritating.
The skincare queen is back 😍😍😍
I enjoyed this review!
May we have an updated haircare routine along with your hair type?! 😊 you’re such a beauty!!! I could listen to you all day
I just did one a few months ago but yeah I will regularly be updating that as things change!
Oh shoot I must have missed it! I’ll go look for it. And Thank you for the reply
But if they really wanted to focus on anti aging, imo adapalene isn’t where I would put my focus.
i'm interested in that as well !
When someone is starting on Retinol, how often should it be used? Once a week and then add frequency? Or nightly? Thanks!
2 days on then 2 days off
thanks for your video :) do you think the retinol 0.2 is more effective than the retinoid emulsion 2%? I have been using the emulsion for about 3 months now to manage my acne, however I don't really see huge results... so I was wondering if I should maybe switch to the ordinary's retinols... what are your thoughts on this?
I use osmosis level 4 and have never had any irritation or peeling from it and I love it!!
So happy to see this notification! Renee , you are my most favourite . thank you for this. I was waiting for your retinol video.
Wow this video finally made me understand how Retinals work ! super educational ✨
Thanks so much for making this video! Its so informative and the timing is perfect! Im thinking about trying a vitamin A moisturizer or serum for the first time but I am not sure how long it typically takes to see results or how long the effects will last. Does retinol require perpetual use to maintain results?
So interesting! And so helpful! I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!
I’ve been using the osmosis Renew for about a year I do love it I like that I can use it morning and night. I see that you’re using the Medik8 now. I was wondering what the differences in the 2. Also can you use the medik8 in the morning? Thank you for another great video
I was literally just looking into retinoids today and had no idea where to start! Thank you so much for this 🙌🏼
Adapalene (Differin) sounds like a great alternative since its an Rx strength derivative but OTC, but I notice you don't gravitate towards it.
I've waited so long for this. I'm so excited!!!
Love your videos, Renee.
Lol
Let me know if you think I'm being too aggressive!
What should I start with? Never used any retinoids yet. Thanks ladies 💖
J R Thanks 💖
We cannot get Differin or any other in the UK. I too wish to start. I'm using Dr D gross eye serum and cream with ferulic acid. Had samples and liked it for 1 week or so, so I bought them. 10days in my eyes are more creapy the before and feel dry. Any suggestion? Suppose to be within reason no reaction....
So glad to see a Retinoid video from you!
I’ve been waiting for this video! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 thank you Renee! I love u!
💜 you!
This came in just in time! Can't wait to get started with retinol.
