Visited the prop department during filming. They were set up in the Railtown 1897 Tri-Dam building. They had, if I remember correctly, five Delorean time machines. One was the 1950's version, one was a hover craft version that was being modified with train wheels, one was a regular time machine they had as backup, and one was split in half for close ups of the dash. The guys there were cool, and let me sit in the original version. Also, being constructed out of balsa wood in a corner was the full sized rail guard the train crashes through at the end of the film. I remember one of the guys mentioning they were getting ready to transport the 50's car out to Monument Valley for shooting. At the time I had no idea what they ware talking about. LOL I'm sure there were other things laying around that I missed, but being able to sit in a real Delorean time machine was just mind blowing.
Two of my high schools friends snuck onto the set when they weren't filming and ended up getting ticketed and tossed by the Sheriff's dept. for trespassing. A couple weeks later me and 3 other friends snuck out there while they were filming. Couldn't see much because we were hiding near the trees but a buddy climbed up a tree to get a better look and all he saw was somebody from the crew taking a dump near some bushes and the guy just pulled up his pants when he was finished. Went back a couple weeks later with a friend after they were done filming and actually snuck on the set. On the way to the set there was a Deloreon fitted with locomotive wheels. I snagged Mr. Fusion off the back. It was a Krupps coffee grinder with a funky base bondoed to it. I had it for years but I lost it in one of my many moves. My buddy snagged the Hill Valley sign you see @ 2:55 mark. It hung in his garage for years. I also grabbed a nice cast iron spitoon that was inside the bar and a yoke for a horse. The only thing I have left is the spitoon. We were nervous walking around there so we didn't load up too much. I don't think any security was there that night but you never know. Couldn't wait to see the movie when it came out and was a little disappointed when it did.
