I just discovered your channel - thanks for bringing me back to my childhood - the BTTF movies were some of the best movies of all time! Also, I wasn't aware that the clock tower was featured in so many other productions!! Freakin' awesome!!
Awesome video! Christopher Loyd stated in an interview that he was lifted in a cherry picker to the clock from the outside where technicians where leaning from the inside-out to strap him in.
the two clock tower panthers "cats" are actually from the movie Cat People 1982. The Universal prop department made several cats for the movie's faux zoo set - and later the art director on Back to the Future re-used them. You can see the "cats" in the movie Cat People - located above the entrance/cages of the panthers.
I worked on the lot about 3 weeks after the fire in 08. It was so heart breaking seeing all of that section completely destroyed. I got to stand on those steps at an event in 2016. I didn't know the columns were still there. That so awesome and you are so lucky.Thank you I really enjoyed the video.
kudos to Universal Studios for envisioning a future where the original studio sets would become a role playing/tourist paradise for all of us kids that lived this 20 years or more ago. I honestly can't believe this isn't a tour yet based on the popularity of the studio lot tours and the BTF movies. Universal missed out on using this lot during the filming of wandavision as that would of fit well in this area, though Disney handled it in my opinion. Thanks for the virtual onset tour.
Kudos indeed. I'm fairly sure if you book a VIP tour and it isn't being used that day for filming, they will swing you by there and inside the courthouse.
That's great fun. Seeing behind the facade is cool - when you climbed up, it reminded me of the Back to the Future DLC for Powerwash Simulator where you get to clean the clocktower!
What's crazy is that in the small town i live in we had an old bank that looked very similar to how that building looked in the movie minus the clock on the front but with the 4 columns and it sat vacant for nearly 20 years until a coin and card shop moved in and the had the front of the building under construction forever and when done it was just awful and people complained and threw fits because it did not fit in with all the rest of how downtown looked and after 10 years or so they went out of business and the building was bought by a Jewelry store that was expanding and moving from another location. A week after they bought the building they were featured in the local paper because it was discovered that that card shop had just done like this is shown in the video around the pillars only he followed on thru on the inside and actually between the pillars and the wall back behind it built rooms for storage. Anyway the paper ran this huge section dedicated to this because even though the jewelry store owner wanted to get his store back open once they had discovered this they decided to rip all the added on stuff down from the building and restore it to how it looked as a bank. they sought out this building because it still had the old huge vault inside. Anyway a few months later they had an open house and i could not even imagine the money they had sank in the place. As an added plus when they were working in the old attic they discovered the original large 4 sided clock that use to sit on a pole on the sidewalk by the curb and that had it rebuilt and installed back where it was close to 100 years before. they are still in business in that building and it looked so nice when it was done it started a whole thing of the other owners restoring the faces of their buildings and now the downtown looks for the most part like it did late 60s to mid 70s it really depended on how crazy the owners went it. the whole downtown looking so nice even gained some attention because some indie filmmaker came here and they shot some 3 part mini series set post vietnam and they used the downtown for a parts of it. I have no idea what it really was and a few people I knew did see it and they said the downtown looked good but the movie was unbearable so i never watched it.

This video back so many great memories! About a decade ago, I was hired to rig and stunt coordinate a 500 foot zip line coming from the clock tower down to the street below for a BTTF event. I literally took that same path up to the roof. Unfortunately, the small door you saw just leads to the inside of the façade. For the film, there were several ports that you could remove to get outside that small ledge. When they rebuilt the top, they didn’t put those in so there is no way to get to that ledge easily. Once I rigged the 3/8 inch steel cable and cut it locked off on both ends, I had to climb up on the roof, then hold onto the line at the edge and swing down and then jumped over to reach the ledge below. Lol… Yes, I have pictures! Then I had the Zipline trolley and was the first one to test the system, as I usually am.. Yes, the zip line was insanely fun but getting to that launch spot was always a pain! The biggest problem for installing it was that that top peak with the clock façade didn’t have much structure up there so we had to run it back another 85 feet to get to the steel behind it. Even with all that trouble it was still such a joy to get to bring that scene to life.
Those red lights you saw on stands inside the building are 1000 watt Mole Richardson "pups". Workhorse light from the old days of film/tv before so many lights have been replaced by LED. At one point you see the fresnel lens opened. This is known as "open eye" and was used sometimes to give a harder pin point of light usually to cast hard shadows from blinds and such. This is also how you change the burnt out bulb too, lol.
in 2008 we got to see the clock tower roof and the cats on our vip tour, the roof was indeed taken off to film ghost whisperer but we got to have a photo whilst leaning in the window dock climbed through. The roof was the original with the 1955 red pristine bricks, and also had some grey paneling on it from bruce almighty. The roof thats on the court house today isnt the original it was completely re built. Wish could post you a photo to show you the original and the cats as well before some were sold to various places.

That's so cool that the original facade is behind the new facade of the clock tower. I wonder what happened to the original clock. The new one looks less fancy as the original. I still remember touring Universal in the mid 80's and the tram car went pass a car carrier full of KITT Cars. Was pretty cool.
I wonder if the BTTF super fans (featured on discovery channel) have the clock. They didn't say, but they showed it and it might be a replica. They do have two the cats as well as a few other screen used items.

Just watched a video and showed the crash that we did through the window on the back to the future part two I am one of the Stuntman on the far right side that went through the window. We did all the Hoverboard stuff.
I know where the clock is from the clock tower. This is so weird. A video popped up on my feed so I clicked on it. This dad and son in Massachusetts have the largest back to the future movie memorabilia collection and they have the clock. Their collection is unbelievable. Christopher Lloyd was in the video also and went to see all the stuff. What a cool video. They have hundreds and probably thousands of original props from the movies. It's crazy. Cool video to watch. It's just weird but good that it just popped up a couple days after I watched this video. Well, mystery solved.
Yep, have been in many times. We have also been on the roof, it's pretty amazing, but a little sketch as well. It is still a working set BTW... a lot of stuff continues to be filmed there which is amazing.
Makes all sense in the world as if anything movie production is based on if it ain’t broken don’t fix it. / make it as cheap as possible. Ok there is space enough in front. Just slap a facade on part of the facade. We don’t need to tear anything down. It’s more stable and we did not threw anything away = we have more material if we want and can reside parts if we again want to film something with pillars
Long time watcher, first time botherer. We went to Universal Studios Florida (not California) in 1992 and again in 1993 and on one of those occasions, on the back lot tour, amongst various props (Including part of the Casablanca aeroplane) we saw the ‘original clock’ from the BTTF courthouse. So assuming this was the truth it seems it somehow made its way to the other side of the US after the late 80s renovation you describe in the video. I can’t remember if I took a picture - back then you had to use your 24 exposures sparingly so not sure if I deemed it pic worthy at the time. I’d have taken 50 of it now and probably made it my Lock Screen. I’ll have a look though. Brilliant video, absolutely loved it. Thanks!
After the fire, the clock tower survived. I saw it less than 10 years ago when I had an annual pass and took the backlot tour 50 or 60 times that year.
Does anyone know if one of the script drafts prior to production actually includes a clock tower in the plot, instead of a courthouse? I know about earlier versions that involved using a nuclear blast, but not anything that might explain why they call it a tower in the film. It would kind of make sense because if the writers are thinking of something that would be especially attractive to lightning, a tower that's much taller than surrounding structures might occur to them. I know it has a lightning rod in the film, so they help explain it that way.
I'd like to think he knew about it at the time. Also note when he drives past the Marty cinema in 1986, there's an ET poster on the cinema wall. Another Franchise-ception.
So many of my favourites filmed at that location! Always loved To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Twilight Zone and of course Back to The Future! I always recognise the set and it feels like a kinda second home. Seeing it in The Twilight Zone, even though it was filmed before I was born, it makes it seem more real and vivid somehow, kinda like time travel oddly enough!
If you watch the series "Expedition : Back to the Future" with Josh Gates and Christopher Lloyd, , it explains where the original Delorean's & many of the props ended up as well as the statues from the clock tower roof etc. I think all episodes are on UA-cam
I'm just beginning the video @0:54, but I visited the U.S. and did the tour back in summer 1992 (the King-kong attracxtion was still alive and the "No Landing" marking were still visible on the blacktop. BUt If I remember right there was a fire that destryed the King Kong attraction and also the courthouse square facades. Therefore if the column stands they are not original anymore.
The Studio Tour website has details of all three fires that affected Courthouse Square and specifically mentions that the Courthouse facade survived every time.

Just started watching and I have goosebumps already.
That was incredible. Thank you!! :)
I noticed it in the twilight zone just yesterday!
I was like wow, how did you get this kind of access and just now realized you’re in the industry!
It would be really cool if they removed the new facade and just bring back the original Pillars. That would be awesome.
I get Franchise-ception by KITT mentioning Back to the Future. So wild lol. Nice touch.
“I can fly”. I remember a rumor if Knight Rider had made a fifth season KITT would’ve actually flown. I wonder how they would have accomplished that.
If you watch the series "Expedition : Back to the Future" with Josh Gates and Christopher Lloyd, , it explains where the original Delorean's & many of the props ended up as well as the statues from the clock tower roof etc. I think all episodes are on UA-cam
This is awesome first time I've seen one of your videos and you cover my favorite movie, instant sub!
🙌
Universal Studios will always be my favorite themepark.
Right? Legendary!
How did Adam not go behind to see this, if he did I missed it, I mean he did every BTTF filming location.
I didn't realize this is still being used. I thought it was just something they did in the 80s.
Very cool to see what's behind that famous clocktower, awesome filming location tour :)
Nicely done 🙌🏼👏🏼
Some high end video production in this one. You’ve come a long way
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot 👍🕹
Man, almost got tears :/ Btw. music at 8:16 ? Reminds me a lot of Star Citizens' tutorial mission from 2015...
Great video and well produced too, really put a smile on my face!
I love all the musical cues you add. 👏👏👏
Huge thanks to those who created them - credited in video description 🙏
