Okay, I want to hear your thoughts! Is that what you expected? And with these results, does that change how you feel about these cameras and which one you would ultimately buy?
There is one reallife situation for such a long use and that would be live-streaming. Would be interesting if you would compare the cameras while plugged in.
Nice video, still mind blown that the action 3 didn't overheat on 4k 120FPS.
The test of 4k 120 has a significant difference in time, but the 4k 60 after about an hour I think both are fine and either work depending on your workflow. I have been using the GoPro for a while, so not sure if I would change it especially on how little I use my camera now vs my ZV1.
Very informatif and really help me to make the decision. Next, I realy would love to see You comparing GoPro Hero11 vs Dji Osmo Action 3 vs Insta360 X3, especialy for the image quality. Again... Thank you for your video that realy helpful... 😊
Dude Need a night light trail (Night TimeLapse) Go Pro is bragging about it... please do...
I run my cameras at very long lengths as I film as I am flying airplanes so this test was very important to me. I am very excited to start using the Action 3.
Steveo-I have started filming my flying adventures and I had started with 2 GoPro 8's and looking to upgrade to 11 or the OSMO action 3. What audio capture cable do you intend to use with the Osmo Action 3?
@@GrummanCheetahPilot curious as well for same purpose. Did you end up getting a cable you like?
Same use case for me, looking for first cam for a piper as I get my PPL to see what am doing right/wrong after. No a/c in the summer has me worried of overheating. Curious your experience.
Oh because I'm a dog trainer I run them extended periods of time to record sessions for families. Need the portability, stabilization and durability of action cameras when working with dogs, and I run higher extended frame rates when I may need to catch a moment and replay in slow motion to break down what happens situationally. I work year round outside for hour sessions at a time, so scorching summers at 90+ degrees, and during the winters as well. I saw you asked in the video and I know I'm a pretty niche use case, but that's why I super appreciate these reviews! Thanks again!
So which one you bought? DJI ACTION ?
Thank you so much for conducting these tests!
The nerd in me loves this work on overheating. Thanks for putting in the work for us. Congrats on the new addition to the family.
Cory, you rock man, thank you so much! And holy heck are overheating tests long. Mainly it’s the cool down times. Test > cool down > charge > cool down > test again🤣
you have no idea, this is the video i have been waiting for from tech reviewer 😂
Wooohoo,.. .been waiting for this video. A much better controlled environment David, you too are learning and improving mate. Thanks for the 18hrs put into this video and can't wait for the full comparison video next week. Cheerio!
Holy Moly, thank you Dave for making my day. I got the info I needed the most!
David, I know a ton of old people have already advised you, treasure these times with your little ones now! I truly treasured mine and I still feel like I missed so much.
Thanks for the great video! I am glad to see the side by side comparison!
Great test. Very well thought out
I am excited to see DJI Osmo Action 3 and GoPro Hero 11 go head-to-head in low light. Although action cams are not reliable in low light. But, I still want to know who would rise its performance against each other.
I'm also waiting for it.
Gene Nagata from Potato Jet did a comparison. Action 3 is slightly better since it has a larger sensor than Hero 11. Hero 11 is slightly better in daylight due to having newer and better sensor than Action 11.
@@HDApex Yeah. I saw that video. DJI OA3 is better in low light. However, I want to see David's perspective and his nerdy opinion about it. As in, going to the specs of each action cam from ISO, exposure, AWB, etc.
Dji wins on low light.
I don't know if the action 3 still has the HDR video mode, because in the action 1 you can record practically in total darkness even better than a DSLR, shocking but true.
Great video. Love these tests and I appreciate the effort it takes to produce it! Side note: The ending clip was adorable.
THIS is the review i've been lookin' for! thanks!
superb comparison David, very clear. cheers
I record long cycling tours, 2h or so at 4k60 with my DJI pocket 2, so there are people for sure who use it like that. There’s a bunch of walking channels who do.
There’s also people recording sim racing, little to no airflow ,so yeah
Awesome video! I can't wait for the full head to head video!
@DavidManningvlog thank you for the valuable review and all the hard work you put into making this
Thanks for the video! I use my GP:H11 primarily as a dashcam currently (original projects I got it for on are hold XP), so overheating has been something I've been testing to find the ideal settings for it. The issue as a dashcam I'm finding at this time is that I'm having to pump hot air over it as running cool air would fog up my windows and freeze me to death in the winter XD So while it is getting airflow, I imagine it is adding to the problem rather than helping during the winter months. Current tests I've run are at the 5.3k 30fps setting in the cinematic preset. With this setting, it lasts about 32 minutes before thermal shutdown with the media mod pacl (unfortunately 10 minutes shorter than a my typical commute one way) and at least 50 minutes without the media mod (no trips yet longer than that). While I don't anticipate too much change to this, my next tests will be at 24 fps with the media mod and I might look into a battery powered fan or something to see if I can get a touch more life out of it. I expect the sweet spot will be a 4k setting for video quality and longevity, but it is something I will be playing around with over the next few weeks.
Always waiting for your videos before making a decision! Thanks for supporting the community
Great test that everyone wanted! Thanks for your time.
A lot of work. Appreciate it! Thank you
Great comparison! I am sticking with the GP11, overheating won't be an issue for me because of how I intend to use this camera and besides that the rest of the features seem to be better on the GP11. I am jumping all the way from GP Hero 4 Silver so this will be exiting!
Thanks for going through this brutal test
Extremely useful video! I'm debating on which action cam I should get to run as a drum camera for filming live shows. Image quality of the GoPro 11 is very impressive, but I love the reliability of the Action 3. Still unsure, but this video was definitely helpful showing the Hero 11 doesn't overheat at 4k 60. Thanks for making!
Awesome test David . Thanks 👊🏻👊🏻🦾
Thank yo for this honest review 😊
It's the choice of which oven you want along with other features
I just bought the DJI Action 3 and just started playing with it.
Whenever possible I want to use the protective frame and yes; I think this will impact cooling and make the camera shutdown quicker. With the protective frame, indoors and no fan to aid cooling the camera does stop recording after 27 minutes at 4k 16:9 60fps and 13 minutes at 120 fps. I measured the temperature of the camera with an IR thermometer and this reaches around 40°C.
Even though this means the camera may shut down even here in the Netherlands on a very hot day I am happy with these results. I think there is a high chance that I will "shut down" before the camera does 😁
DJI did some pretty big improvement on the Action 3's battery life! It's easy to be impressed by the fancy features and new tech but at the end of the day the battery's reliability is what elevates our filming experience !
Epic test!!! Thank you for taking the time to run it. 🙏 It’s a different animal down here in South Florida where our temps run about 20 degrees hotter. I will say, DJI OSMO Action has never let me down. I’ve accidentally left it mounted as my dash cam for all day in the sun and it still recorded a small skate session no problem. I have no doubts about the OA3!
Yeah DJI just need to get better colors now...
@@filippov123 truth! GoPro’s colors are on point!
Great stress test setup!
Baseball and Softball games in the Southwest are real use case scenarios in which you are using 4k or 5.3k and 60 fps. Mount the camera to the backstop and then zoom and pan in post edit to get all the action. The problem is when the games run 90 to 120 minutes long and the temperature is over 100 degrees. Being able to handle the heat is a must. My own testing has the sunlight on the black body adding to the build up of heat, so even with a decent breeze it can still shut down. A Sun Shade and Raspberry Pi Heat Sinks have helped with a GoPro Hero 9 continue to run for most days and games. Glad to see they are looking into the issue and building solutions into the newer models. Thanks for the video.
Your comment/question on why would you use 4k/60 or 120 for long periods of times....scuba diving. I turn it on, jump in and when I surface I will turn it off. Dives can last 30-50 minutes depending on depth. I currently use the Hero 7 and have zero issues with 4k60. The 4k120 is tempting as it would help with slowing down video for situation or improving quality with fast moving fish. I would think if I was staying above the 16m limit there would be no issue as it would be somewhat "watercooled", but in a dive case I'm not sure how it will do since the plastic and air inside won't transfer heat as well. I do like how you did test it in a practical situation, slight air movement and mounted. Wish they would get these early models in some divers hands too. Best review and heat test I have seen yet. Thank you!
Man that’s a lot
Of work! Thanks. I’ve become so tired of my Hero 10 freezing up and doing such weird stuff. I’m really optimistic for the DJI OSMO Action 3.
The opposite of click bate! Multiple cameras tested and a bit of a battery test to boot :) Super impressed with both the Action 3 and the Gopro 11 especially it's recording 10 bit! Thanks for doing this test.
Thanks for the honest review.
Excellent work David , thanks for these comparisons tests and as you say, you never film for these long periods so it’s not a problem . I look forward to the low light tests lol atb Dave 🇬🇧
Great video, Thank you! 😄
Thanks for the thorough reviews and tests. My use case is normally 1080P/60 maybe even just 30 fps but filming in my garage for auto repair or various DIY projects. Here in Phoenix my garage gets over 100°F in the summer and sometimes I have to film outside in the sun at 100°F+ temps. I try to keep the camera shaded but am always having to stop the project and toss my camera in the fridge for a bit. I'd be curious how long any of them would run in those conditions. About every 6 months I watch reviews of all the mainstream action cameras to convince myself to pull the trigger and get one. Looks like the DJI Osmo Action 3 is dangerously close to checking all my boxes including a more attractive price.
Cool, good test. The result I expected. I'm most interested in whether DJI has improved the stabilization with small numerous shocks, which the first one handled on average.
Thanks for doing this test. I know it takes a lot work. I own the pro 10.
Another Awesome Video!!! Thanks for the Genius Cam Testing!!!!! 😍
I’m glad somebody made this comparison. I was literally standing at Best Buy today, about to buy the GoPro 11, but I found some consumer reviews about overheating problems on it. In my experience, I bought the GoPro hero 3 and the GoPro hero 5 as soon as they came out, and both of them had a lot of issues with freezing until the firmware updates. I like the quality of the hero 11 more than the DJI, but I may wait a bit before picking up a new action camera. 🥶
me too. wanted to buy gopro 11
Thanks for that
This is a great test for me, as someone who does run the cameras for long periods of time to film my drum videos!
David, loving the massive output of videos! I expected those results to be fair! I'm looking forward to the direct comparison! :D
I have two Hero 10s that I've been using for the past year to film fishing videos at 4k 30 fps. I film for up to a few hours at a time straight. I'm basically walking slowly up a creek. They both overheat constantly in basically any temperature above 70 degrees. I freaking hate those cameras. I'm going to hate-buy the Hero 11, but I'm also going to get the Action 3 as a backup because I've lost trust in GoPro.
What have you found which one should I get
DJI OA3 has definite usability improvements. Better water resistance/depth rating, physical button to switch presets. Is the battery a lot better than the Hero 10/11? I use these cameras in the ocean, so even if I have spare batteries, often it is not safe to swap batteries. So general battery life is important. Overheating is never a problem for me, in the ocean, the camera gets cooled down, and anyway I shoot mostly 1 min clips.
Thank you so much for doing the battery tests David!!! Wow! I’m so happy the DJI Osmo Action 3 won! And with blazing stars! I went ahead and ordered it and with Adventure Combo and it was ALL under $500!
Btw, that box should be saying, “Manning.” Just saying!
Great demonstration! I've been on a hunt for a good action camera! The Action 3 will be great for my long road trips and those I hyperlapses I do of the places I visit!
Doing the Lord's work! Appreciate the scientific testing for all of these cameras 🙏🏻 Osmo Action 3 continues to impress!! Great video, sir.
Hey David great video as always. Has anyone ever done a video with them with constant power supply? I have a hero 8 and was trying to use it as a bts wide angle camera and it overheated within 5 minutes. Would love to see someone like you try. Thanks again for the amazing content I'm always learning new information from you
I'd been using the 10 quite frequently for quick interviews in various temperature, direct sunlight to shaded environments. (w/media mods in all cases) Recently, I mounted one on a race car without the media mod and it sat for quite some time baking in the direct sunlight...temp around 80 degrees with ligh breeze. The camera inadvertently was activated twice for 15 minutes each while stationary.. Finally, the tired time it was started, the car began to roll out and 30 seconds later it overheated and shut down. Point being any indoor test in a mild temperature environment will not give a adequate test of overheating. These camera overheat when operated in an already heat induced environment.
New Action 3 is such a good camera, thanks for the heat test 👍
Nice comparison
To me an action camera is my only camera, so I will have to record all videos by it. Overheating is always my concern, my Gopro 10 never works well - it dies everytime. Thank you so much for the review, I will carry the dji Osmo aciton 3 for upgrade, very impressive!!!
This review is really starting to make me think about replacing my GoPro8. The battery running time on the Osmo Action 3 is insane without any of fhe overheating issues that plague GoPro.
And alot. LOT more cheaper than GP11
I used to use my GoPro hero 10 black for recording the video of my podcast. It stayed in one place the whole hour long episodes. I did it in 4K 60fps because I wanted the better quality when I zoomed in. It always overheated and corrupted my footage…
I switched to a real DSLR for my podcast but I am going to GoPro hero 11 for my vlogs and travel videos for sure! Thanks man!
I do POV trail running and cycling videos and I do have the requirement of shooting 4k30 for up to 2.5hrs (for a half marathon run). So running off external battery and not overheating is very important for me. For the previous generation I switched to Insta360 One RS, but now I might have to go back to Action 3 especially when they release 10bit.
I run my action cameras for 4 to 5 hours none stop obviously not counting having to change batteries, because I have them mounted on my kayak. And that's why I'm waiting for my DJI action 3 to arrive. Great test matey
Great video David! I really appreciate your thoroughness in setting up the test conditions. I'd like to see how long the Insta360 X3 lasts too. Thanks!
I've never had the X3 overheat! Or the X2 for the matter. The key on the X3 and it's the same with all these action cameras is to set the screen to sleep after a minute or so. On the X3, you usually don't need the screen while recording in 360. You'll get the best battery life like that too!
Hey David Manning, on the subject of GoPro and heat. How about setting the GoPro to max settings, put it in a container of cold water, run until the battery goes flat and see if it has made the water warmer.
Thanks for this review, after researching if you want quality image go to Go pro but in Survival DJI is the best option.
Thanks for your testing. I do run GoPro's for long run times documenting Tesla FSD beta and other real world documentaries. Not everyone uses a GoPro for tiktoc or Twitter clips. My Hero 10 got the came time as you at 4K 60. I was planning to get the Hero 11 but after seeing your test, I ordered the Action 3. I also run my drive tests with external USB C power so the Enduro battery is not really exhausted. Your quality test was interesting but I look forward to the Action 3 when it will have 10 bit color as well. Will I also get the Hero 11? No, I will wait for the Hero 12 to see if GoPro does better. Thanks again for helping me decide to break away from my family of GoPros since the Hero 3's.
Best lineup of devices for heating test
Awesome video! I use a GoPro Hero 7 Black to record fishing videos. I record the entire trip and edit the footage later. I use a power bank instead of the battery that it comes with. I am able to shoot continuous video from 3 to 5 hours straight at 4k 60fps. In direct sunlight at outdoor temps around 90 degrees it will overheat after a few hours every now and then, but if i have my bimini top up on the boat for some shade it will record the whole time with no issues. Most folks i know that record fishing videos for youtube record this way. so you dont miss any action. You got me wanting to buy this Action 3 now! Sounds like the perfect camera for recording long hot days on the river!
Nice job. Like you say, we don't really shoot this was normally but it's good to know. The only scenario I could see might be a school sports team, like football, letting an action cam or two run continuously at 60 or 120p. Even then, if someone changed the battery between each quarter, turned them off and let them cool a little until the start of the next quarter, they might get a whole game of 60 or 120p video.
Keep up the good work.
John Quinn, Glasgow, UK
Wow. 3 videos in three days. I’m impressed. 👍🏼
I’m actually impressed with your dedication. I’ll buy some CUTS using your code now.
I just got a DJI Action 3 yesterday and put it to use straightaway at 4k/60. I shoot longform outdoor video (typically non-action, so low airflow), and was surprised and a bit disappointed that it did overheat after about 30 minutes of shooting. It was around 85 degF yesterday, though, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Fortunately, I just had to wait a few minutes for it to cool off and then resumed shooting.
Holy cow. That DJI Osmo Action 3 is pretty freaking awesome. Love the 5-way review!
Little late to the discussion, but this has pretty much sold me the Action 3. I am going to be using it in Mediterranean climates (Cyprus can his 40 Celsius easily in the summer), so having a camera that isn't prone to overheating is a big sell for me. The GoPro had me debating for a while but I just can't justify it if I pay £400 and the thing can't record a road trip because its a bit too hot.
Just hope that the newer models have fixed their focus issues and we're golden!
The DJI Osmo Action 3 looking good, looking forward to seeing your comparison with the GoPro Hero 11.
The end was the best part! Hahaha the rest was really good too!
Great 👍🏻 information good work brother best ever
I use mine when I go out kayak fishing so I run mine using looping for hours at a time. I like these tests as they are huge for me.
Agreed! I do the same thing. I use a wind screen on my GoPro and that causes the overheating to be worse sometimes too.
i filmed with GoPro's for a long time. Now its up to the DJI Action 3 - Thanks for testing all these great cams.
Great test, with really interesting results, thanks for doing it. Recently got my first GoPro (H10), and loving it. I live in the Arctic and cameras overheating is not really an issue. 😅😂
it dies when too cold too haha
@@fdsaffff haha! Yep
I live in South Florida, so if I was to pick at this point it would be the Osmo 3. But going to wait for your full comparison next week. You daughter is so cute...God bless her!
Great review but one thing is missing. I traveled a lot. When you using the camera as a dash camera record the beautiful view. Go pro and action 2 over heated under the sun exposure within 10 mins. This is the reason I have go with Action 3. This is very important for lots of people.
I just got a go pro 10 and it overheated in a air conditioned car (72 degrees) the first time I used it. I got a INSTA 360 X3 and it doesn’t overheat. Wish I didn’t get a go pro.
Most review videos are done by pro-Gopro people or sponsored by Gopro.
Go for Action 3 which is a more practical camera with less problems, Action 1 was a good camera.
Great video!
I've been using the Action 3 for a few months now and love it but must admit I have had it over heat a few times. First was when I was doing work on my 4wd and it was mounted to the windscreen so clearly very little air flow and it was on Hyperlapse. Since then I have had it overheat on the Tripod when in direct sunlight at around 30C (Australia) and again on the windscreen when driving and windows down. In saying this though each time I have had it running for 20 minutes or more.
Totally appreciate this video! In tropical Singapore, overheating is a big pain in the ass!
DJI action 1 never had any overheating problem. Action 3 went back to Action 1 design. Gopro always have overheating and crashing problems.
ok, got it, GoPro=better dynamic range and stuff, but overheats faster than Action 3, GoPro still doesn't show in app mirror image WHILE recording. Buying the Action 2 was a coin of trust to DJI. Question: How can we return Action 2 to Dji and get a discount for an action 3 cause the Action 2 was a test made on the buyers who trusted them. The trust must go BOTH ways. For my use, GoPro will not be used (ever), until they solve the live in app stream, and DJI must keep up the good work but must gain back the buyers trust. Good to see Action 1 (the legend), back in a new coat :) I just love when DJI listens to his community. And you made another perfect video.
Happy to see DJI outperform gopro.
Wow! I am shocked at how much longer (better?) the Osmo Action 3 ran. So glad they have returned to the OA1 form factor. Think I'll be picking that up now after skipping the OA2
My real world use of my gopro 7 hero black is to mount it to the wall at a bar and point it at our band's stage, plug in power to the USB C port and hit record and let it roll until the card is full (about 4 hours).
That is what it can do and that's what I expect from the 11 if I decide to go that route. I'll get one on amazon, see if it can do it and if not, send it back and get the DJI.
Wow, the Hero 11 and Action 3 have made amazing improvements
I'll tell you when I use those cameras at 4k 60 for that long. When I film my son's baseball games with my GoPro mounted on the fence behind homeplate. 1.5-2 hours long. Tournament weekends mean at least 2 games sometimes back to back. 😅 I have had my GP shut down on me this past summer and I didn't realize it until I went to download a clip of him making a highlight play. 😥
Ok, how did you know my name was Brandon? 🤣
Hahaha! I'm a magician!🤣
I routinely use a GoPro 10 at 4K 60 linear with horizon and max stabilization doing mountain bike and motocross videos. In the 90 degree humid Florida sun I routinely get 55 minutes from a regular battery and 65 from a Enduro operating in one continuous clip.
Love hearing that Tim! The tough thing with all of these different tests is that real world situations have so many variables so people get different times. Stoked to hear it’s doing so well for you!
@@DavidManningvlog Love your channel Dave and so great to see an upbeat person with ethics, morals and one who puts family first!! Keep it up !!
This is definitely real word need to know. I am looking for an action camera for filming tennis matches. Currently recording at 1080p60 with a LG G6 phone, but looking to go 4K 60. Tennis matches easily last over 1.5 hrs and I hook up an external battery pack to keep the camera running the whole time. This is outside on a tennis court with no shade. From your testing no GoPro will work for my needs.
I use the osmo action 1, because I use it for rowing where I have to start the camera before I go out onto the river. I usally run it at 2.7k 60 and it usally lasts about 1hr 20m (80mins) which i think is pretty good
The winter is coming mate, what about a low temp stress test? Great work and nice video! Cheers!
I’ve seen other reviewers say the 11 overheats before the 10. It’s a little confusing, it would be nice to know if the 11 lasts longer before upgrading.
I bought this camera with the hope that it can handle Real Estate Life in Sunny Yuma, AZ. I am excited to give it a whirl! Thank YOU for your in-depth review.
Hi David, hope you'd be able to do a comparo of GP11 and Insta X3 - the Gopro new sensor size and features like fixed horizon, and Insta360 usability improvements and features - make them perform very similar tasks for content providers. Would like to see your take on that. Cheers!
