I work from home as a freelance writer and blogger. I already follow these exact tips you shared because they really work. Having a regular schedule even when you don't "have to" makes a huge difference. I generally work 9 to 7 and end my day by reading a good book and my breaks throughout the day usually involve a walk around the block with my dog. Using my Day Designer planner and bullet journal helps me stay organized with my tasks throughout the day as well.
Best wishes to all of those other remote workers out there!
    Rebecca

Amazing tips Ingrid, I work from home too.
I just like to add two:
    - I need go outside and be in contact with the nature unless 30 minutes per day, I just love fell the warm of the sun and some fresh air. I am very lucky, i live very close to the beach and I can spend a part of my day there .
    - Morning excessives gives me a lot of energy and help me to think clearly :)

I LOVE working from home....started doing it 7 years ago and wouldn't want to return to the office workplace (or that drama)!
Awesome tips here... For myself I have learned that structure is of the utmost importance. I MUST have a daily routine, I don't
do well with willy-nilly work habits.
I prefer to work very early in the morning and get my 'work day' finished so I can spend the rest of the day doing 'me things'.
Out of bed between 4 and 5 AM and hit the shower as if I were going to an actual office job. I keep my work space separate
from the rest of the home (in my basement). I work for four hours.... then take a coffee break and watch 30 to 60 minutes
of TV/news or sit on the deck and enjoy nature. I then return to my basement office and work another 4 hours. Then the rest of the day is mine. Of course...you have the beauty of 'flexibility' if anything more interesting comes up....just remember that
you do have an obligation and any 'stolen time' needs to be made up.
Sometimes there isn't anything interesting to do in the evening, maybe the weather is bad or nothing good on the tube, so I'll
put in 'bonus time' in the basement office, this allows me free time to use later when something more exciting may be
    happening.
Working from home is all about time management and discipline. It's a GREAT way to work and much less stressful then
being in the office environment. Also, you save a ton of money on gas, food, and clothes!
Downside.... You are isolated to some degree. You do not have people interactions and you will, at times, find yourself yearning for human contact. You also have to realize that food is WAY too available. Be sure to live a healthy lifestyle and take time
for exercise and watch your diet!
Keep your home office area free of distraction. No TV is a good thing! Do not get in the habit of checking youtube or social
media every five minutes! Work time is for work, play time is for play....keep them separate and you'll have no probs.
Good Luck, and ENJOY the freedom!

Something to tackle the isolation and the occasional feeling of loneliness is to head to a cafe or something for a few hours. I find even just being around other people and having a change of scenery can do wonders for that side of things!

I'm usually foggy and have trouble focusing, especially in the mornings and days. (I'm a night owl.) ..and I always think it's really good to KNOW what you're going to do tomorrow to wake up with a purpose! Try to plan what you're having for breakfast, even, so you start with a motivation to get up right away and so you already know what's been planned for you. i.e., "I'm going to wake up at this time tomorrow to make poached eggs for breakfast, then I can start this project." Knowing and planning the day the night BEFORE is so helpful to combat morning or new-day fogginess for me!

This was a really helpful video for me. I have been working from home for over 18 months now, and I am at that phase where I feel like I am a slug and a mooch for working at home, and I feel like I don't have the right to stop working just because I don't go to another place to work. I am soooo glad I am not the only one who feels discouraged and lazy. My personal tip is to always have your office buddy with you. D'argo (my 9-year-old dog) has learned the work routine and is always super psyched to do it. He jumps up in the morning and tap dances until we go upstairs to my office. He hovers around the office while I am working, shares snacks with me, and if I have been sitting too long will come over for a cuddle, reminding me to get up and stretch my legs. If you can do it, it is an amazing feeling to have someone as pumped up for work as your own personal office pet.

+Kathryn Davidson Also, I have a window behind my computer monitor that faces out into our awesome back yard space, which gets great sunlight most of the day. It also lets me keep an eye on the dogs when they go outside to play, and keep track of inclement weather. Sunlight works for those days when you don't have enough pep in your step!

The beginning of this video is exactly what is happening in my life right now. 6 months in working from home. A dream after 19 years in the corporate world...thought I could finally take ownership of my home life and creative side...but the opposite is happening. Great video...lots of common sense I needed to be reminded of. It;s easy to say "just make a schedule!!" but unless I have a lot of meetings---its so easy to find myself in yoga pants at 3PM. Thanks again!!

I have found it super helpful to get out of the house, even if it's for a 5 minute walk, a yoga class, an errand or meeting with friends. Having a schedule outside of the house is key for me. If I stay in the house for an entire day, home starts to feel much less home-y! Thanks for the video, Ingrid!

Definitely go outside! When I'm feeling sluggish spending 20-30 minutes outside in the sun feels like I just took a nap, it's so invigorating! Even if it's not sunny, awakening your senses to the wind and ambient sounds is so relaxing and really makes you think about what really matters and how small you are and how small your seemingly incredibly huge tasks are.

I love love love this. this is the best advice, even for young people who are just constantly on their computer, phone and social media at home when you're not working yet. now that I'm older and have been through all of that, I love your advice for having the bedroom being technology free cause in time I've learned that disconnecting is the best feeling ever where you can just have your you time and focus/relax. I think when I finally have my own place that is exactly what I'm going to do and just have a separate room just for hanging out and going on the computer/gaming stuff (tv, xbox, etc) :) Ingrid you're the best!!!

This is very helpful. I work during the mornings at a preschool as a teacher and go to college in the late evenings so the whole middle of the day is time that I have to spend doing work from home. This is usually creating lesson plans for my classroom at work and then doing homework for school. Dividing up the day like you said, helps keep me focused on one thing instead of worrying about everything at once.

Love, love, LOVE this! UA-cam is just my hobby but even on my days off I try to keep it within the 8-5 (okay fine, 8-6) time zone, to separate it from my personal life. Another great rule of thumb is the "touch it once" rule, handle whatever it may be immediately. I apply this to once I "touch" the off button on my alarm, I get out of bed. If I read that email then I have to tend to it. It is so refreshing to tackle tasks and you end up clearing a lot of time to do the things that you're passionate about instead of dealing with tedious, though necessary, tasks!

This was highly helpful! I'm only 13 but when it comes to the stuff I like to do (such as UA-cam, writing, party planning, and playing/practicing instruments) I like to see it as work that I love. I am definately a beliver in having cold water at your desk. Sometimes when the water starts to feel just blah I will add cucumber, lemon, and mint to add refreshing bursts of flavor. I know when I grow up I will definately be working from home so I will always come back and rewatch this video for reminders

How do you actually get into working from home though while getting a steady reliable income? Working through the system with a typical 9 til 5 job just isn't for me and I just want to live my life free and do what I want without feeling trapped and other people controlling me.
I quit my job today because I hated it. All the jobs I've ever had I just quit because I hated them. I'm constantly looking at the clock counting down the hours until it's time to leave and then it all starts in that cycle again the next day and I don't think it's normal. We've all just been brainwashed into thinking that that is how we should all be living.
I was so scared to tell my nana that I quit my job because I would judged and she would be disappointed even though staying in jobs makes me unhappy. Life is short. Why would I want to live it being unhappy.
I'm 21 from England and I'm just stuck. I'm not incredibly talented at anything and don't really have a true passion for anything. I enjoy art and reading but my arts and crafts skills aren't up to scratch that I would consider doing something with it.
Even if I did try to do something about it what would I be doing about money in the mean time? It's like our lives are just controlled by the aspect of needing money to do things I hate it :( I hate the thought of having to "sponge off the government" but that's the only option for me right now and it's sucks that that is how the world works.

    • @gracemarie983
      @gracemarie983 9 років тому +4

I quit my job as well because I have 2 daughters and working full time felt like they were growing up without me :( There are so many opportunities out there. You need to find one your passionate with. I'm really into health and fitness so that's what I do. I've been doing it for a few months and LOVE it! I just opened up a website a few days ago www.gracemajeed.com.

    • @232DeepBlue
      @232DeepBlue 9 років тому +4

+CastleFlameGal you're just 21, you have plenty of time to find what your true passion is :)
I think a good thing to do is to get a part time job or something and use that extra time to find out what you want to do. Maybe take some classes?
If you are really driven to make a living out of something you like to do, you will have to make some efforts, and it will not come easily. Sometimes all it takes is an idea and start working on it, sometimes you have to find the right company (a lot of companies take remote employees, like designers or accountants).
      Good luck!!

      Florencia Pinochet
Thanks for the advice. It's the getting a job part that I struggle at anyway and then when I get one I never enjoy it so end up quitting. I don't understand.
It's this constant cycle and I feel guilty for doing it and that I'm a failure and that I'm never going to enjoy anything and stick at it. I have no other way of getting money so I literally get money from benefits even though I really don't want to but that's the only way I can survive without being trapped in this miserable cycle of being at work almost all the time and even then I feel kind of trapped because then I'm trapped in the constant control of the benefit people controlling what jobs I should and shouldn't be applying for and if I don't apply for ones that I am apparently "capable of doing" then they can just stop my money and then I have literally nothing. It's really got me down today. I've never been so stressed and down in my life. I'm usually a very optimistic, look on the bright side kind of person but today I'm just feeling depressed lol.

+CastleFlameGal I´m sure you´ll find something you can stick to in time. But work is work and it can´t always be fun. We all do things we don´t love because we have to pay the bills. It´s the contrast that makes you enjoy your free time so much. If you had all the free time in the world, it wouldn´t feel as great as you think. Just try to find a job that you don´t hate and enjoy the sense of accomplishment once you get your pay check.

      @DioneN 9 років тому +6

+Soli Verypersonal so true! Every job has good and bad points, good and bad days, and unless you're lucky enough to not have to worry about bills and supporting yourself, we just have to suck it up sometimes!👍🏼 It's life!

This video is really helpful. I also work from home and I sometimes find myself past 8 p.m. in my pajamas and my work only halfway finished, because it's so easy to procrastinate all the time.
Another tip is to get outside and get moving (walking, cycling, anything) as often as possible, because if you don't you'll realize that you're spending all your days indoors.

I don't have a stay-at-home job, but I often have do schoolwork at home, and it's very hard to find that balance, like you said in the beginning. This is especially true on the weekends.
I love the post-it note over the list idea! I love lists, but the amount I have to do some days overwhelms me, and that seems like a good trick to stay focused on one task and motivated!
    Thanks again!
