The Tim Bobbin delph was a large disused quarry that was situated only yards away from the Tim Bobbin public house, which itself was located alongside Padiham Road. Triangular in shape, it contained water that was reportedly 150ft long and up to 90ft deep but in the days leading up to Boxing Day, a severe frost had covered the water with a thin layer of ice.
And for two young boys, this was too tempting an opportunity to miss!
Just after four o’ clock in the afternoon, Frank Hartley and his friend, Thomas Hewitson - both twelve years old, had ventured into the quarry, and, with boys being boys, both were eager to slide onto the ice.
Hewitson would be the first to take the lead, stepping out onto the ice closest to the water’s edge. Anxiously he slowly made his way further along, and happy it would be able to take his weight, his over-confidence would quickly evaporate as he began to jump to test the strength of the ice.
Without any warning, the ice suddenly gave way, plunging Hewitson into the freezing cold water.
Hartley, after seeing his friend disappear below the surface of the ice quickly went to his rescue. Unfortunately, this would also prove to be a mistake as he himself would end up in the water.

Hi there. I'm relatively new to this channel and have just watched this episode...so very sad. My father died 63 years ago, when I was 2, trying to save 2 men who were drowning in the dangerous surf in Sorrento Australia. His friend, who was a very strong swimmer and my father, were in a milkbar, when a woman ran into the shop screaming for help for her husband and brother in law, who were drowning in the surf. They ran down to the beach and into the water. My father was not a very strong swimmer at all and after a futile attempt to save the two men who had disappeared in the surf, my father was caught in an undertow. When the life savers arrived with their surfboards, there were several attempts made to rescue my father as his friend had managed to make it back to shore, but when they were finally able to reach my father it was too late. When they brought him back to the shore, ambulance officers worked on him for 2 hours but it was too late. It was later reported that it was a miracle the tradgedy had only taken 3 lives, as several of the life savers themselves also had to be rescued. I know my father was a hero but having to grow up without ever knowing him or having him in my life, is something I have and never will, get over.

The concrete, bricks and iron work are what remains of Hapton Valley Colliery, a huge drift mine that connects to other local mines, such as Gannow and Barkley Hills. A lot of the water in the area spring from the mine.

Only found your channel this last week - I am hooked! Binge watching in order from the beginning!
I was struck with the Vicar's comment at the funeral I do not hear it as he was condemning the boys - I heard it as trying to reconcile the loss of the five brave souls who sacrificed themselves for others - whilst there are wicked/evil souls in the world who live.

Many thanks Wendy. We try our best, sometimes we will get things wrong and if we do, all we ask is that people rectify it for us but in the right way. We do research as much as possible before going out to film, but there will always be people out there with perhaps more info on the stories. We have loads more to come!

If there was ever a definition of a hero, those five men define it. What a sad end for the families to deal with. They must of understood the risks as each family member went under the water yet they continued to help. Incredible bravery. The Vicar would have had direct contact with the families and i am sure he would have his faith tested and may explain his sermon. He was saying how he felt and being honest how he saw things. I hope those two boys went on to live fruitful and positive lives. Well presented guys.

Many thanks for that! I think the story has been written in a few books over the years. I think there is more in the old newspapers though that tell a truly heroic and yet sad story in more detail. What those men did back in the day was nothing short of heroic in my opinion 👍

Quarry Bank street is behind the Tim Bobbin so it's not too difficult to determine the whereabouts of the scene of the incident. It would have helped if you had marked the Tim Bobbin on the map you posted. This would further clarify the exact position of the reservoir.

Yeah, I've seen a couple of UA-cam videos of the same story but both have visited the wrong quarry. The one in this story most certainly disappeared and replaced with housing directly behind the pub. The other quarry is around 3/4 mile further ahead which people seem to think is where it took place.

The river bit you got to and asked the questions about are Hapton Valley pit related.
Edit, it was behind what is the crematorium now. The crem and cemetery are linked at the bottom and below that is hapton valley. Houses built on the former area a bit further south behind the tree line.

    • @AcornElectron
      @AcornElectron 2 роки тому +2

@@DaysofHorror well there’s the Hapton Valley pit collapse. Also, linked to that area is the Molly Wood Lane/Molly Brook murder as the stream that goes through the bottom of the crematorium is greenbrook. It goes into a culvert tunnel under the road, motorway, railway, canal and mollybrook lane and reappears in a field above the lodges for what used to be the Dye works. In fact, that same stream flows past to the rear of Brook Row former location where ANOTHER of your videos took place.

A tragic story. Enjoyed the video though. This reminds me of an incident that I did some research into quite a few years ago. I was walking through the churchyard at Thurnham near Lancaster not far off the canal when i saw a gravestone with the names of 3 children inscribed on it. They were aged 11,9, and 8 all from the same family and it said they had all been drowned. It was only quite recently that I found a report in the newspaper archives giving details. Apparently they'd been playing on the ice on the canal at Galgate and I assume the ice broke, but all three were drowned. Whether they died together or whether it was a vain attempt to save their siblings we'll never know because there were no witnesses, just a shawl floating on the canal. What the parents went through is hard to imagine but again a very tragic story. I can give you further details if you want to research it yourself at any time.

Thats another tragic example of lives lost back in the day from kids just having innocent fun. @@DaysofHorror The tragedy happened on the 18th January 1879 at Galgate. It was reported in the Lancaster Gazette on the 22nd January. I think you're maybe not being fair with saying people wouldn't do that today. People will put themselves at risk as long as they'll be no legal repercussions afterwards. I think we get that bad impression from videos of violent attacks and street crime where people worry of being prosecuted as a defender.

In Islam we would consider those men martyrs and believe that they would have a special place in Heaven. The speech of the reverend is absolutely uncalled for. It is almost asking for the two lads to victimized because of their accident. What a shame that such a heartless condemnation could have been delivered by an auspicious member of society. Those lads would naturally be feeling guilty about this incident for the rest of their lives. It was not necessary for the reverend to turn the local population against them and make them the pariah in society. Shame.
I was a little concerned when I saw you handling those rusty metal objects. Dont forget about tetanus. Just a little scrape and you could also be another tragic victim. If you are often in a place where rusty metal is rather get a tetanus inoculation to protect yourself.

Hard to imagine pal. Really is. I mean, as they went into the water one by one, I guess it just became a situation whereas each of the men just wanted to help those already immersed in the water and it just escalated from there. There are loads of similar stories like this, maybe not in terms of how many people die in each story, but loads of people died skating on ice back in the early days.
