Towering over the town of Haslingden, Cribden Hill imposes its presence in a grand demeanor. And whilst it may look picturesque from spring right through to the autumn months, it can arguably be as intimidating as well as beautiful looking during the winter months, and it’s during this period back on Sunday, 6th March, 1910 our next story takes place.
Young Isabella Walker, who was just 2½ years old, had spent the best part of the day outside playing with other children. Although it had been a cold and mixed type of day, this hadn’t stopped any of them from enjoying the rare opportunity of making the most of their free time together.
By mid-afternoon, many of the children had returned home, leaving Isabella pretty much alone. It seems that she still had an abundance of energy still to burn off and so she went back to her home to spend time with her elder brother and sister, John and Hilda. John was seven and Hilda, ten years of age.
Unbeknownst to her, both John and Hilda had already been sent out to a farm a short distance away to collect some milk and so, after finding only her mother and father at home and with her brother and sister nowhere to be seen, she left the house to go and look for them, or so it seems.
Time would soon pass, and despite John and Hilda returning home with the milk, it would be around 5.45pm when Isabella’s parents, Frederick and Margaret would for the first time realise Isabella was missing.

I think we have only filmed two videos where the ending didn't end in tragedy. This and the Pike Law Five, those boys missing in Pike Law quarry. I'm going to check them all now just to see if there are any more 😆

Wow! I was so amazed as this story unravelled to reveal that the little girl had survived. I have twin grandchildren who will be 3 in December and the thought of one of them being on the moors alone for over 40 hours and surviving is horrifying!!
What a lovely change though, to hear a story with a happy ending.
It also shows how much times have changed, that a little one so young would be allowed to wander or to play out by themselves on farmland.

Hi Chris. I really love these stories. I live in Skipton and write books on the abnormal. My stamping ground is anywhere around Skipton, Ilkley, Grassington,, Keighley, Haworth. I've seen your vids on Skipton and Ilkley moor. Have you anymore stories from this particular area? I'm housebound (stroke) so cannot visit these places myself, but can write about them, giving due credit to my sources. I did several vids of my own before the stroke. You might find "ghosts of sheep street, Malcolm Hanson"

Having walked along Cribden Hill on a few occasions, and sometimes when it is bitterly cold and foggy, whilst it may be hard to navigate the terrain, it's still a relatively small area in which the police searched and still didn't find Isabella straight away. My only thought maybe is that she wandered off completely away from the hillside and over the top part, only to come back to the hillside and to where she would eventually be found later.

Unbelievable ending , Thank goodness Isabella survived all the odds , how can a two and a half year old just be allowed to wonder the moors .

We were only talking about this story yesterday when driving though Rising Bridge. You could see the mist as it was blanketing the hill and I said to Vickie it's amazing how a young girl could have survived all that time on her own up there. And to be spotted by chance - at least it made for a happy ending I guess.

Only one I think I've covered so far with an happy ending. I'm sure we will find others but yes, I agree, it's always nice when the ending isnt as dark. Still can't get my head around how she survived so long in the freezing cold and with food or water and being at such a young age.

    Wonderful story.
My sister and I had sons more or less the same age. One day we went to the supermarket and we took our 2 and a half tear old sons with us we put our sons down on the floor in the supermarket and immediately they scooted off in different directions. You have no idea how fast they were for their ages. We ran about trying to find them and I found mine and lifted him and put him in the supermarket trolley but my nephew was missing. We ran outside by this time knowing that he was not in the supermarket and found him looking a bit confused walking in the.middle of the traffic on the busy road next to the supermarket. Our hearts stopped and my sister hysterically with tears in her eyes scooped him up and rescued him from an uncertain fate. We were so traumatized by this incident that we caught our breath and took them straight home. I immediately went to buy some denim and I made my son a special vest and lead for the future so that when I took him on any walks whether in the city or country he could walk on his own but could not scoot away and put himself in danger.
I can understand how in that quiet countryside the parents allowed the older children to walk alone on a mission to a designated place but how in the hell do you not keep a careful eye on such a small toddler.
An added thing which I find incredible is that even though her mother was at home doing chores and she only had 3 children she did not notice their daughter was missing for so long. Shew goodness me. That's incredible. But maybe this was a different time and place. I also cannot wrap my head around the parents of the other children who she was playing with not realizing how tiny and defenceless she was making sure that they accompanied her back to her home and making sure she would be safe and cared for there.
But anyway thank the Lord she was found and her adventures didn't lead to her death. I hope she had a good and happy life afterwards.

The thought of her eating their sandwiches that their wives certainly made for their packed lunch is a heart warming one. A scene lost to time.
These days they'd go get a sausage roll from gregs or get a half eaten McDonalds out of the sauad car

Absolutely! And its amazing how she found the will to survive for 41 hours alone on the moors. What I failed to say in the video was, during the police's first search on the Monday, they were within 250 yards of finding her (where she was eventually found on the Tuesday). The fog seriously hampered everyone's search.

Glad the little one was found its not often theres a happy ending. They definitely made things to last back in the day. I know things and times have changed but a 2 1/2 child wouldn't be out of my sight especially living up there. Not blaming parents as i said times have changed. The wee darling must have been at her wits end as her parents probably were as well.

We tried to find more info on Isabella but after her ordeal, the local papers never seemed to take any further interest in her. We can go back again, now we are a little more experienced in searching online records, and see if there is anything more to add to her story and life.
