Folks, this IS the original version of “Mandolin Rain.” Bruce felt the minor key wouldn’t receive much radio play in the 80s so he rewrote it in a major key for better radio play. Years later he returned to this version because it best reflects the emotion and coloring of what he intended.
Thank you fo rthe info!! I really love both versions, I really love the old 80' poppy one, and I love this western movie like thomas newman kinda song too, both different in music, same lyrics,, but different tone, color, emotion, musical story telling....
Oh wow... this is a great version, but the other one just jams, when i was 16 this wouldn't have hit me the same way. As a 50 yr old i can listen to anything by Mr Hornsby. Wish i saw him live...
I may be a dummy but I've never heard of a musician doing that. It is pure genius. It opens up a whole new musical concept for me. Does that make sense? I try now to listen to other songs recomposed like that. Wow...
I saw Bruce in Antwerp last year. The gig was unforgetable. What a great performer. The day after I met him in the Ramada Plaza Hotel and had a chance to talk with him for a short while. For me again an unforgetable experience. Thank you again, Bruce for your time and nice pictures to remember.
One of the most challenging tasks for a composer is to revise one's own song, especially after years of regularly playing it. Sir, you did it perfectly, I'm breathless...
Waited many years to hear this live. Finally after being postponed by covid concert was rescheduled. After working 12 hours and having to drive hours to get to the concert and wake up at 3am for work the next day, he played none of my all time favorites. Then at the very end said he was going to play this song then ...wait what...gotta go. Heartbroken. He owns a large section of my all time favorite songs but played obscure B side songs and fiddled around on a dulcimer for half the night. Don't get me wrong, I've built dulcimers and love them but I wanted to hear THIS, Bruce doing what no one else can do. Glad to have the recordings I guess. Always leary that artsy geniuses will go the self indulgent path.
Bruce Hornsby is one of the greatest musicians yet very underrated, he has an amazing talent, "Mandolin Rain" is one of many beautiful songs he created, love the old school music!!, I wish I didn't have to listen to modern day crap!!!!
You're one talented musician. I'm 40 and have always loved 'the way it is'.. but I'm only just discovering your other beautiful work. Thanks for sharing your amazing gift.. it happies my heart xx love from NZ
Incline Thine Ear Music I hate this version ever since my dad first introduced me to Bruce after he saw him and Ricky Skaggs back in 2008. I think this is in minor key that’s why
An immensely talented musician, composer and one who just exudes character and depth of understanding. Personally, I'm hooked on the original version but that's likely because I've heard it so, so many times. Bruce, you bring light, love and joy to all who listen to your music. You are a treasure of the American spirit of innovation.
Not only do you make the most beautiful music in which all heaven participates, but you are also a very great music artist which nobody can and will imitate 1:1, even if they try again and again. I thank you with great and heartfelt respect. An unknown beaten man from central Europe.
Simplemente sublime, una interpretación perfecta desde la delicadeza de cada nota y acorde en el piano hasta esa voz bellisima y super afinada,Bruce un Master por donde se le mire...
I'm hoping my son will stay with his piano. I'm using you for inspiration. You're beautiful, always have been. Brings me wonderful memories of my youth.
A Williamsburg boy at his best...a “musician extraordinaire” in every sense...plus a down to earth regular guy. Cheers Bruce...see you on down the road.
Love him, saw him in person in 2005. He is extremely talented with a great voice. Also liked him when he played with the Grateful Dead. I love that song Mandolin Rain.
This is so beautiful I love this song he's one of the best piano players wow I can't even say in words how beautiful this piano playing is he's a pro for sure I love this so beautiful can I request a little cascade tinkle on the high notes piano omg that would be bliss
I always wished I could play like you Bruce... I didn't even think you played anymore.. I would 💋 love to sit beside you and sing. My bucket list is kinda dumb.
I just said I like the original better. Ugh. I’ll let this version set in. By far my favorite song of his. Thank you for making me actually listen/hear it. 👍🏻
@Alice Daniels Me too. Goosebumps again and again and again and............. When I´ve heard this version for the first time in the movie with Robin Williams, I was instantly hypnotized, and since then, whenever I hear it, still the same. It is indeed hauntingly beautiful, totally agree.
I heard Bruce didn't start playing piano till he was 18! This has stuck with my as a pianist:0 Fyi this is absolutely the better version. Not to compare. But it is. FACT
OMG. You know how you get used to the album version of a song and nothing else ever sounds quite as good? Well this version just blows me away. Don't get me wrong, I love the original, I have for many years. But this is like a knife to the heart. Tears streaming down my face as I write this. Maybe the most beautiful piece of piano music I've ever heard. And that voice.... Listening to this just transports me. I'm a devout atheist but hearing this is like some sort of religious experience. I'm floating somewhere outside my body as the sound washes over me. Pure genius.
David Smith the very fact that you acknowledge a faith experience proves Gods existence. You even started your sentence with oh my God. It’s much more than an expression, Jesus has priceless meaning! Glad to see the song opened you up to him, even if it’s a first step. God bless!
David Smith wow be sure you tell that to Jesus when you meet him! I’m sorry for whatever happened to you in your childhood. Sounds like you need a hug or some serious counseling.

He went back... The memory is what he shares with us. I'm embarrassed to be there. That doesn't happen often. He forgot about us. That is just fine. Somebody recorded it. I'd like to thank them!
I wish he would compose for movies! To me he’s always been one of the best song writers and I think he’s proven in this rendition that he could compose for movies and be very successful at it. I’ve always been envious of his talent playing the piano. I wish I could play half as good as he can. Very gifted musician.

That's brilliant! This is a haunting version, but I love it in the major key. I think he did the right thing.
Thanks Issac, really interesting, I suspect he was right, 80's chart music was not a natural home for the minor chord.

Not many artists (actually none) completely recompose their songs. This is just genius.

Haunting, dark and a beautiful
The song came and went
Like the times that we spent
Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent
I laughed and she'd smile
It would last for awhile
You don't know what you've got till you lose it all again
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
listen to my heart break every time she runs away
listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears roll
Down my face as she turns to go
A cool evening dance
Listenin' to the bluegrass band takes the chill
From the air until they play the last song
the bluegrass band
I'll do my time
keeping you off my mind but there's moments that I find
I'm not feeling so strong
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
listen to my heart break, every time she runs away
listen to the banjo wind
A sad song, drifting low
Listen to the tears as they roll
Down my face as she turns to go
The boat's steaming in
I watch the sidewheel spin
And I think about her when, I hear that whistle blow
I can't change my mind
I knew all the time that she'd go
But that's a choice, I made long ago
Listen to the mandolin rain
Listen to the music on the lake
listen to my heart break, every time she runs away
listen to the banjo wind
A sad song drifting low
Listen to the tears as they roll
Down my face as she turns to go
Listen to the tears as they roll
Down my face as she turns to go
Listen to the tears as they roooooll -
Down my face as she turns to go
Pure bliss..
