- Carved into a red sandstone cliff are the last "cave" houses to be occupied in England. These homes were occupied into the 1960`s and are now protected by the National Trust. The Trust has furnished these buildings as they would have been when last used as dwellings. This scenic location on the edge of heathlands has wide views over the Staffordshire countryside.

Hi Joseph & Peter. I could fancy staying in one of these for a short break (with a few modern amenities tucked away somewhere) but not long term. It did feel quite snug with the open fire. Years ago these were seen as a better option than some of the places in the wet valley bottoms. Thanks for watching. Robert & Ivor.

wow that is so interesting cave houses
Those were some neat man made cave dwellings. I know of a few man made ones here in Southern Utah as well. It is an interesting way to build. Thanks for the tour. Have a great day.
There were several places where there were cave dwellings in England. Where we live in Nottingham a layer of fairly soft sandstone meant it was easy to create cave homes. Many buildings in the city have caves below them, some used as domestic cellars and others as great places to store beers under the older pus and bars some of which have been trading since the 1100`s. Three in Nottingham dispute a claim to be the oldest in England. Thanks for watching. Have a brilliant day.

They actually did feel snug and cozy. Years ago before the arrival of modern amenities they were preferable to the nearby village in a wet valley bottom. Thanks for watching.

They felt surprisingly warm and snug on what was quite a chill day. When people chose to live here it was in preference to the village situated in a very wet valley bottom that had few services. The cave homes were pretty dry and healthier by comparison. Obviously overtime the balance of comfort has changed. Thanks for watching once more. All the best, Ivor & Robert.

As I have said before, there are just so many beautiful places in our world. It is so easy to find such variety. Obviously in Iceland you are surrounded by nature at its most impressive. These houses did feel quite cosy and would be fun for a few days but I think we would soon be missing the space and comforts of home.

Yes occupied till the 1960s, if the trust hadn’t acquired them, I’m sure someone would have turned them into luxury apartments.
