- I've always loved this piece by VW. I hope you enjoy it too.
English Folk Song Suite is one of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams' most famous works. It was first published for military band as Folk Song Suite and its premiere was given at Kneller Hall on 4 July 1923. The piece was then arranged for full orchestra in 1924 by Vaughan Williams' student Gordon Jacob and published as English Folk Song Suite. The piece was later arranged for British-style brass band in 1956 by Frank Wright and published as English Folk Songs Suite.
The suite consists of three movements: March, Intermezzo and another March. The first march is called Seventeen Come Sunday, the Intermezzo is subtitled My Bonny Boy and the final movement is based on four Folk Songs from Somerset.

When I was a little boy here in the US-- the Mid-west is where I hail from-- my mother would play this music on a record for me and my brothers. She still loves it-- she said it was "England to her" when she listened to it... As for myself(now 54), I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree! Thanks!!
A lovely comment Allen, thank you. My best wishes to you and yours in the Mid-West. Hoping you are all safe and happy at this trying time.
First heard this as a young guy on an album done by Frederick Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble and have loved it ever since. So many fascinating moods...
My God, you have been prolific during this lock down! Please keep them coming as they make these strange times a bit more bearable! Many thanks and lovely piece.
I have indeed Mecano, and you are right: a contribution even in a small way.
love V Williams. So English. So nice...
The first piece I ever played in (at school in the 1960s).
Beautifully done, as ever.
The original suite (as played at Kneller Hall) had four movements.RVW cut out one and published it seperately as the march Sea Songs. He also orchestrated it himself in the 1940s, using a larger orchestra than Gordon Jacob had for the Suite. )It was used as the theme music for Billy Bunter in the 1950s.)
Another delightful spirit raising piece, Anthony, thanks much!
Lovely to hear this familiar work in combination with your montage. Good to see you're still posting your delightful videos,
How good of you Charles.
Nice. I think Grainger would be not far down the pipeline, right?
You have it aright - as usual.
"I'm seventeen come Sunday". Such a delightful tune. Both, Vaughn and Grainger took this folk melody and made it into a wonder. This is so captivating!!
AntPDC Thank you for the uploading. Also your choices of visuals are beautiful as always. Greetings from Miami. 🌞🏖
