Ralph Vaughan Williams - Folk Songs of the Four Seasons Suite - The Sprig Of Thyme

  • A rare and winning performance of little-known RVW works: "The Sprig of Thyme" & "The Lark in the Morning". We have Martin Yates and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to thank for this.
    I took these pictures yesterday (26 May 2013) of various places in the Derbyshire Peak District.
    From The Classical Review:
    "Vaughan Williams wrote his Folk Song of the Four Seasons in 1949 for the women's voices of the National Federation of Women's Institutes. Roy Douglas, the man who did much to help Vaughan Williams by making fair copies of his appallingly untidy scores as well as replacing, to some extent, Gustav Holst as a sounding board, made a five movement orchestral suite from the work.
    The Sprig of Thyme and the Lark in the Morning must be one of Vaughan Williams' loveliest folk song arrangements with a gently flowing melody".
    The full review of the entire Album "Ralph Vaughan Williams - Early and Late Works: World Premiere Recordings" (a must have for RVW admirers IMHO) can be found here:

    Conductor: Martin Yates

    There speaks a wise man. I have always felt the history of this lovely country close around me,sometime you can almost touch the past. Norfolk is glorious, big skies and wide horizons and the feeling of freedom. England is a beautiful place and we are lucky to be a part of ot,s fascinating history.

    Thanks for this one , AntPDC. Both the music and visuals remind me of someone in my past. Although she has changed in many ways now, the memories of emotions felt over 40 years ago linger, thanks to this evocative music which never changes.

    I've rambled a bit on Irish footpaths over peaty ground, up craggy yet gentle slopes, winding my way along the low limestone walls in search of what's around the next bend, and all across the Burren in brilliant sun intersperced with short bursts of rain. But never have I set foot on English countryside (London pavements and sidewalks I've walked simply do not count in this discussion), and I hope to do so some day.

    Absolutely beautiful. Reminds me of Ivor Gurney, who he studied with. What might Gurney have achieved, if not for the First World War and his wounds. Mental more than physical. What might have been?

    The search for work caused me to leave the Peaks 20 years ago,now I am disabled and my husband needs constant care ,because of these things I have not been home for some years,.even so my heart will always belong there and the wonderful music of my favourite composer and the superb photos of Ant PDC (may blessings lite on him) take me back there . I wonder what he could do with Dives and Lazarus.

    Ralph Vaughan Williams had a depth to his music that no other composer can come close to. Its an endless depth of musical genius. He didn't have the kind of brain that Mozart, Beethoven or Bach had, his genius was different for sure. This depth has been imitated many times over the years, and thankfully so, but still not coming close to the master Vaughan Williams.

    Thanks a lot Ant for sharing these two wonderful folk song arrangements by RVW... May I ask if you are aware where the full orchestral score may be available for purchase. I also enjoy very much your images selection and on this regard I would like to ask what software are you using to create the various zoom and camera moving effects. Many thanks and best regards, Max T.

    Thankyou for another great sequence of photographs, - and more beautiful music! How do you achieve the very effective '3-D' effect, which is especially noticeable in the views that appear at 0:26 and 1:40? This particular piece of music deserves to be much more widely-known, - as in fact does the whole orchestral suite arranged by Roy Douglas. (Isn't there quite a well-known Christmas carol which is sung to the tune of "The Lark in the Morning", - which is similar in form to "The Holly and the Ivy" but a definitely different piece, - where each verse ends with the line: "......and the first tree in the greenwood it was the Holly"?)

    • @AntPDC
      @AntPDC  8 років тому

      +Robert Whittaker I do apologise Robert - I hadn't noticed your post. The "3D" effect you mention I can only explain by the slow fade slide transition I used (into a similar subject). And I completely agree with you as to the music. Best wishes.

    perhaps romanticism can comfort you. think about all those thousands in history displaced from their countries, let alone their villages they'd scarcely ever left, due to famine or conviction. you're part of our English diaspora. it often gives me a thrill when I look on a country lane and think im seeing something more or less the same as my ancestors centuries ago...Dives and Lazarus is among my favourites though im Norfolk rather than Peak..."in the fen country" is the one for me I guess
