Sassanian Persian Empire (امپراتوری ساسانی Sassanid Empire) - Ardashir I
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 жов 2020
- In this first episode of the new Sassanian(Sassanid) Empire series we take a look at the rise of its first ruler, Ardashir I. In 224 he would overthrow the Parthian Empire's Artabanus IV and his Sassanid (Sasanian/Sasanid) Dynasty would rule for 430 years. They considered themselves linked to the Achaemenid legacy and after displacing the Parthians would expand on that legacy. It is one of the most fascinating periods in the history of the region.

As Zoroastrian persian I thank you so much for making first professional Sassanid documentaries!
Surely there've been previous documentaries about the Sassanids from the POV of Western observers/academics...?
@@NobleKorhedron if you know of any, please share, because I don't :)
@@SlayerRiley @NobleKorhedron @Medhi Immortal My goal in making these was to present Iranian history in a neutral way without a western bias. My feeling is that while there are fantastic documentaries available on the Sassanians they either don't go into great detail (sum up the empire in 20 to 30 mins) or they have a western bias...i have yet to find a longform in depth one but as with Samma would like to know if there are others...but that was the reason for these i found a lack of in depth ones. Thanks to all of you for watching!
As a muslim persian i thank you very much too for this video 😅
@@mehdiimmortalshorts8748 I have read "Battle of the Persian Gate" which was a great read dealing with him. It would make a fantastic movie :)
The Persians are one of if not, the greatest civilization in history. Unlike Greece and Rome, and even China. Persia was able to create continuous empires that were influential in their area. For 2,800 years Persians had a significant presence in the entirety of Afro-Eurasia. Even when they were conquered, they did not lose power. The perfect example of this being that both the Mongols and Arabs, Turks and Greeks became Persianized. They adopted Persian ways of bureaucracy and the Arabs even based a large portion of their language off the works of Persian scholars. The two arguably greatest scholars of the Islamic Age, Avicenna and Al-Razi, were persian. The seventh Abbasid caliph even said, “The Persians ruled for a thousand years and did not need us Arabs even for a day. We have been ruling them for one or two centuries and cannot do without them for an hour”. What is one thing that is unique to Persia is its complete resilience. Persia has never at any point lost its power. Those who tell you otherwise are not looking close enough. When Alexander overthrew Darius III and ended the Achaemenid empire, he left all of the high ranking Persian nobility and government officials in their positions, meaning the Persians never lost their power. And even if he had deposed of some Persian officials, he died too quickly for any of that to matter.
Even when the Turks came they were Persianized . History Professor Ilber Ortayli of Galatasaray University in Istanbul Turkey said “The influence of Iran upon the Turks is like the influence of ancient Greece upon the entirety of Europe….. We [the Turks] adopted much of our bureaucratic and governance methods from the Iranians during the Ottoman dynasty. We have been influenced by Iranian civilization since ancient pre-Islamic times . Persia was both the France and Baltic of the ancient world. The epitome of class and power and stubbornly resilient and troublesome to foreign entities. Which brings me to reinforce my point. Greece eventually fell and would never become a massive independent influence in its area again. That is seen even today. After Rome fell, Italy would struggle to contend with its neighboring countries and would cease to be the biggest presence in Europe. . But Persia has never at any point in time , In it’s entire history ever lost its presence. It’s presence is even seen now, as Iran is arguably the biggest presence in the Middle East.
That nice to hear I’m from Persia and my name is Ardeshir 😂😂😂
There are empires, yes, but there are no civilizations for the Persians, and this is certain, and the opposite is true. The Arabs’ influence on the Persians is so great that 60% of the words in their language are Arabic. Likewise, Persian poetry and poetry are taken from Arabic poetry, such as nazms and others. Likewise, the decorations on the walls are originally Arabic, and then most of the names. Persians today and in the past are Arab
60% ؟؟😂😂😂😂😂😂
Wow at least i cant understand arabic for sure maybe some words from quran @@c33i

Excellent start to the series on the Sassanian empire. Accurate depiction of the historic events that took place in those years. I liked the part where you clearly called the hollow Roman celebration of a triumph for Alexander Severus. Indeed so crushing was the defeat of the Romans that they had to celebrate a false triumph to cover up their military disaster. The first one of many. Waiting eagerly for the next video on Shapur I. I’m very in awe of sassanid culture while i’m personally biased against rome/constantinople, I cannot helped be impressed by the magnificence of sassanid might. The sassanids laid some stunning victories to rome that could rival trajan’s campaign’s to parthia and that campaign didn’t progress as far beyond the zagros mountains.
Shapur’s stunning victory against emperor valerian and imprisoning him.
Khosrow’s sacking of antioch and forcing tribute from roman cities showed how much he knew about justinian’s careless expansions as he was well-informed of weakening defenses in the east and disgruntled under-paid roman soldiers.
Khosrow II would extend sassanid territory and take roman provinces such as syria, palestine and egypt. While he was eventually deposed, if not for heraclius he could have potentially seized constantinople though i find that unlikely.
I suppose the advantage I have of being a foreigner to the region is I can love all the history of one of my favourite regions...so not just Iranian history but Turkish too :)

Again, you have a great way of explaining details instead of just focusing on key events which helps understand the broader picture. My understanding is that Parthians didnt really see Sassanids as other peoples or invaders from somewhere else hence creating more of a Sassanid-Parthian confederacy. Also there was a lot of mixing between Parthian and Sassanid families.
First thank you. That is correct and why I mention in my bit about the sun setting on the Parthians is that their military structure and nobility via their noble houses would endure long beyond Artabanus IV. You could argue that for the North not much changes with Ardashir I taking power with the exception being he did engage in civil projects as I mentioned over the entire realm including the North something the Parthians did not place quite the same emphasis on.

@@YoreHistory probably, if he lanched the second planned campaign, he was able to reach ctesiphon and also Pars, because ardashir was focused on the Eastern Parthian province.. If he destroyed the sacred fires of ardashir, come with arsacid survivors and sacked sasanid mainland, ardashir will be overthrow, and persia balcanized.. And i love Parthians as a Persian😁 i like their hat, their light/leather armor, archery and pretty much everything about em. Sadly, our knowledge about em is of few. maybe due to rivalry with Hellenists( which most historians were from ) or Sassanids secret service whipped out most of their history or perhaps both. One thing we know for sure and to address “Armenia preferred arsacid” is that they had a blood lineage with kingdom of Armenia. Also me2 believe they could last longer.

Interesting solution of the Sasanians to defeat the Romans.
During the Parthian period, in the wars between Iran and Rome, most of the horse archers were in the first line and the heavy cavalry in the second line.
■
The attack was like this:
First, the archers attacked the enemy, and the enemy inflicted heavy losses, the archers gave their place to the horsemen, and the horsemen hit the heart of the enemy's army and destroyed the enemy.
This method was used until the Sassanid era.
But the Romans, learning the time of the Sasanian attack, opened their ranks when the archers attacked, so that the arrows of the archers would miss more and cause less casualties, at the same time, when the cavalry attacked, they compressed their ranks to reduce casualties. give and give more resistance
Shapur Sasani implemented an interesting and intelligent idea to deal with this method
To counter this method, Shapur Sasani arranged his forces in three lines
- First line: Shaheswaran
- Second line: shooters
- The third line: Shaheswaran
In this way, the Persians, who knew that the Romans would press their ranks when the cavalry attacked
With the attack of Alki, the cavalry in the first line made the Romans compress their ranks
The cavalry did not engage with the enemy with the utmost agility and gave their place to the archers, the Romans who were tight also suffered heavy losses and their makeup was destroyed.
At the same time, the Roman soldiers had suffered casualties and their military makeup was messed up
The archers gave their place to the horsemen and the horsemen destroyed the enemy's work with the final attack.
With this method, Shapur was able to defeat 3 Roman kings and reach the conquest of Syria and parts of Cappadocia, however, the Romans learned how to deal with this method a few years later, and instead, the Sasanians used new methods to defeat the Romans. They put to work...
I wish you start making videos again ...

Firstly, it should be noted that the two greatest powers in the Middle East during the third century were the Sassanian Persia and the Romans. Considering the fact that the Persian adhere to the teaching of Zoroastrian, a Monotheist religion and with the presence of Proto-Islam Manichean, a similar teaching of Monotheism, a transition in believe came into effect without a single drop of blood. The Persians had a long history of religious antagonism towards Christianity and towards Romans. As such It had from the very beginning all the characteristics of a religious conflict - a veritable jihad, no less. During the second half of the third century, King Shapur 1 extremely building alliances with princes throughout the Arabian Peninsula. amongst these were the Lakhmids, who were given lands by his father, King Ardashir, what would now be Southern Iraq and North-East Arabia, and who converted to Proto-Islam Manichean version - in the late third/early fourth century.
In a recent article titled “What kind of Judaism in Arabia?” Christian Robin, a French epigraphist and historian who also leads the expedition at Bir Hima, says most scholars now agree that, around mid-4th Century CE, the elites of the kingdom of Himyar converted to some form of Monotheism independent of Judaism. It is unclear how much of the population converted, but what is sure is that in the Himyarite capital of Zafar (south of Sana’a), references to pagan gods largely disappear from royal inscriptions and texts on public buildings and are replaced by writings that refer to a single deity. Using mostly the local Sabean language, this God is alternatively described as Rahmanan - the Merciful - the “Lord of the Heavens and Earth,”
Continuation with the conflict between the Persian and Romans, King Shapur II and Emperor Jovian which erupted in 363CE, the Persians, along with numerous contingents of Arab allies, carried out a systemic military expedition against the Romans. The Persian victory with the conquest of Asia Minor (Anatolia) and the whole of the Levant between 363 and 368, equaled Shapur II with the achievements of his predecessors of the third century. This was recorded in Quran, Chapter 30. The story told by the Romans of how they, in the face of this overwhelming calamity, rallied armies and reconquered all the lost territories - only has a ring of fantasy about it, and historians have long viewed it with skepticism. Certainly, there is no doubting the power and influence of the Persians in this epoch and obviously, the Romans have been falsifying history.
More extensively is that the earliest Islam, with the veracity of Quran, as revealed by archaeology, and historical evidence, is in fact profoundly Persian; The Persians were the real architects of the Islamic Empire. This would explain why early Islam is so thoroughly Persian in character. Archaeologists have found that in Mesopotamia and Iran the transition of Sassanian has left no evident destruction layer - in the territories of the Sassanians all indications are of a peaceful transition from Zoroastrian to Quran-Islamic civilization. In marked contrast to the situation in the former Romans territories of Syria and Egypt.
So, it really was Salman Farsi who wrote the quran?

"Kurd" at that point was used to refer to the Iranshahr's shepherds and herders of any Iranic tribe. One can say it was kind of like a working class in the socio-economy of Iranshahr and only in very recent times and because of political issues, it has been pushed to become a national identity. Kurds are ethnically/linguistically, and culturally Iranic/Iranian. The Kurdish languages are descendant of Pahlavi(middle Persian) language.
@@Berfo1
Persians were a union of some Iranic tribes who separated from the Medes and moved south. They spoke the same language. In historical texts sometimes Persians are referred to as Medes and perhaps vice versa!
As I said "Kurd" has not been a national identity until the recent centuries. The word was basically used to refer to semi-nomadic mainly Iranic shepherds and herders mostly living in mountainous areas in the Iranian Plateau.
Indeed some of e.g. Deylami people were referred to as Kurds since they were herders. Pahlavs, Medes and Persians, Mitani's, Arman's etc included. Thus, Kurds as we know the word today, are relatively diverse genetically. Some closer to eastern Iranics some western Iranics etc and some even close to Arabs in locations further from Iranian mainland that are close to the Arab settlements -> with Haplogroup J1

I said "diverse" but with your standards. When you said "Kurds are genetically close to Talesh people", then I said Kurds are diverse. So I mean diverse within the Iranic people or within the western Iranic people.
All current Iranics have R1a and J2 as the dominant Y-chromosome-based Haplogroup. Haplogoups are about ancestry and it is within the science of genetics!

Which was more powerful as an empire?
@@godblessyouandyoursatisfac1579 I like both Empires from a history point of view. However, I am more fascinated by the Iranian empires I think because we don't have as much information about them. Also, they are often portrayed in movies as "bad guys" or "the enemy" instead of focusing on things the empire did or accomplished like mail service, roads, food cooling, views on slavery etc.
Those are things that many movies/videos do not cover and it is a shame. Now, as for for which was more powerful that is a difficult question.
We can look at some comparisons:
Largest empire Land Size:
Achaemenid Persian Empire: 5.5million sqkm
Roman Empire: 4.75 to 5million sqkm
Largest Empire Population:
Achaemenid Empire: 49.4million people but 44% of worlds population
Roman Empire: 65 million people but 21% of worlds population
Longest Lived Empire:
Achaemenid 200+ years
ROman Empire 1000 years
As you can see its complicated...and I could list government types/economy etc So I will ride the fence and say I like both but am more fascinated by the Persian empire. However, I try to be as objective as possible.

I think Parthians could rull even more if they weren't fighting among themselves and weren't busy with their several civil wars. Plus, they were not only fighting Romans, but also Iranic Saka tribes, Kushans and also another Iranic nomad tribe called Tokharians/Tocharians (Turanians) which were weaker than Huns but way more powerful than Sakas (Scythians). They beat the shit out of Scythians. And with all this, they still rulled for 471 years. Imagine how long could they rull if they weren't fighting each other and their neighbors in the east and were only fighting the Romans.
Ramtin Fazeli plz Ramtin join channel historium in telegram and join the chat group we discussed there all about history.about your comment everything is right but actually Kushanid empire was way more developed and powerful than nomadic Huns and greater threat for Parthians than Romans specially kushanid empire under rule of Kanishka In 2 century ad(exactly the century Romans were victories against Parthians ), Tocharians with Schytians created the Kushanid empire in first century Ad so yes Tooranians of shahname including the nomadic Tocharians and the mighty empire they created with their unification with schytians and boodaism religion as Kushanid shahanshahi which was more powerful than undeveloped Huns and more dangerous than Romans , ultimately so many wars between Parthian empire and Kushanid empire gave advantage to Sassanians to destroy both of them(Parthians by Ardeshir and Kushanids by Shapur the first )Kushanids were the former Tocharians or Yooezhiz which crushed by Mithradates the second (the great )and after this wars some schytians joined him(Parthians) as Suren clan in sakastan or Sistan and some which defeated joined Tocharians and so much later their unification created Kushanid empire in first century AD.
@@aradsstates9584 Thanks for these informations. When i said they were weaker than Huns, i meant when they had to leave their lands because of Huns. @@aradsstates9584 Btw, Epimetheus uploaded a video about Parthians
Ramtin Fazeli yes Yoouezhis or Tocharians were weak in the north of China and when they migrated they defeated Sakas or Schytians and forced them to migrate but ultimately crushed by Great Mithradates the second of Parthia which his throne was enough to be proud of Parthian empire but your right until first century they weren't as powerful as Huns but with kushanid empire they became the nightmare for the Parthians but there was peaceful relations between Parthians and Kushanids too which wasn't good for Parthian nobles affairs.

Sassanids were ethnic Persian nomads from Pars province, called their language Pahlavi PARSIG (Persian) and claimed Achaemenid Persian ancestry. They had nothing to do with kurds. Kurdish ultranationalists just want to claim them cause the kurdish identity is a very flimsy identity. Kurds do not for example speak one language, they speak more than 8: kurmanji, kermanshahi, feyli, zazza, sorani, gorani etc.. kurmanji, kermanshahi, feyli and Zazza are descendant of middle Persian Pahlavi Parsig, while the rest are different Iranic languages. Kurdish historically was also mot an ethnicity but a lifestyle and it only became a loose ethnicity around 200 years ago. Kurds literally cannot understand eachothers language for the most part, a kurmanji cant understand gorani or sorani.
Yep, i mention this in the first episode :)
With all due respect Sir, your battle of Ctesiphon between Alexander Severus and Ardashir is not described by any available sources, and certainly not by Herodian. According to the sources, the third roman column was annihilated but the central column, under Alexander Severus’s command, never left Syria. But of course, if you have at your disposal newly discovered sources I am not aware of, I apologise in advance for my comments.
All my sources are listed in the description. History is recorded by both sides, it is just that the Persian side is a bit scarcer due to the destruction of many important sites. It is dangerous to look simply at a written account from one side and consider it an exact accounting of what happened. The Romans as with other Imperial powers were prone to exaggeration and often covered up losses or inflated victories. We also need to look to archaeological evidence etc.
Sometimes one side's accounts also don't always line up as is the case often between Dio and Herodian for example. Mistakes are made but for the most part they are still accounts of history.
Yore History thank you for your answer. I know by hearth all the roman sources and none of them mentions a battle between Alexander Severus and Ardashir. According to Herodian (6.5.8 and 6.5.9),Alexander Severus influenced by his mother , Julia Mamaea, cowardly renounced to lead the main column against the Persians. The third column was therefore surrounded and destroyed. The first column was victorious but suffered major casualties when retreating through Armenia.I know less well the Persian sources, but, to my knowledge, they do not describe a pitched battle between armies personally lead respectively by Ardashir and Alexander Severus. The battle described in the video is therefore fictional . Ardashir anyway did not push his advantage and disbanded his army. The war ended with a status quo ante.
@@antoniotorcoli9145 are you Italian?in the biography of Alexander severus,MC hugues claimed that southern army reached elymais, and was beated but not annihaleted.. instead, the central army was hit by illness (maybe dissentery) and wasn't able to reach the southern army..
