  • In this second episode of the Sassanian Persian Empire series we take a look at the reign of Shapur I. He would famously capture the Roman emperor Valerian at the Battle of Edessa. He would also build on the foundation laid out by his father Ardashir I. Shapur would reign for 28 years between the years 242 and 270.

Shapur I, the Roman nightmare, the developer of the great Sassanid Empire and the conqueror of Kushanshahr, Edessa, Cappadocia and Syria, and the conqueror of the three Roman emperors Gordianus, Philip, and Valerian, who would have easily conquered Asia Minor if the Eastern conquests had not occurred. ،

This videos are amazing! Sassaninds started the golden age or let's say the Renaissance of middle east. Later on when arabs conquered Persia they started using the art and mind of sassanids, which started during Abassids and led to Islamic golden age. They created the real Persian culture during their time and they were the ones who created the Islamic culture. Sassanids in my perspective are the best dynasty in Persia and dynasty which influenced many other dynasties for hounded of years. They truly deserve to have movie or a TV show.

I have to point that people didn't worship fire as zoroastrians but also consider it as a symbol of light and holiness which is referred to ahoramazda.
(Indeed they preyed (there were 5 time for praying in a day which was adapted by Muslims in after centuries) in front of fire which they believed is the most sacred creature of mazda).

Amazing job, I really enjoy watching your videos on Iranian history! I really hope Kartir will be mentioned in the next epizode, as he is a very interesting but too often overlooked character, despite how incredibly influencial he was in the internal politics of the early Sasanian Empire. Not only was he a lowborn who became one of the most important people in the empire, possibly responsible for installing Bahram III on the throne. Many sources also suggest that he was the main rival of Mani at the royal court, and the reason behind Mani's eventual imprisonment and death, as well as the creation of an organized structure of the Zoroastrian Church.

If you check my description you can see some Iranian authors who have based a lot of their findings on archaeological evidence and text translations. Will cover much more as this series progresses. We know quite a bit more about their empire than we did the Parthians for example who will likely remain a bit of an enigma until more information is uncovered (archaeological).

    • @iexist3919
      @iexist3919 Рік тому +1

Ardashir is the Modern Persia/Middle Persian name of Artaxšaçā, which is spelled in Old Persian. Artaxerxes is the latinized version of Artaxšaçā. Why is there a difference? During the Achaemenid Era, Old Persian was the primary language. As such, we use the (latinized) Old Persian names such as Artaxerxes (Artaxšaçā) and Cyrus (Kūruš), while we use mostly Modern Persian for Sassanid names like Ardashir and Khosrow.

@@proconsul6840 I think one of these two empires should stop invading and investing into defending, they had everything, Sasanian empire for example had middle east with some more gifts combine and i know they don't give enough information about it in even our schools let alone other country's schools but they were so respected by other nation and as i mentioned they had EVERYTHING
people loved them, shah was god himself on earth, more than 50 nations gathered as a country, what we call today china worshiped Sasanian, India was completely over their influence, one of Shahan shah once said
today we're at the point that
      1)our knowledge conquers minds
      2) our religion conquers hearts
      3) our sword conquers armies
and roman empire was completely equal to them in west, so one of them should say okay, that's it, why we should fight?
the problem is both of them were so arrogant and I've to say especially Sasanian, they thought they're god on earth
the problem with us (Iranian) is that in some point we think, well that's it, we conquered the world and then we stop defending, it same happened with Achaemenid empire, if u look at one of their capital, Takht-e-jamshid it hasn't even any wall around it or a stronghold to defend it, why u may ask? because they didn't think it is necessary at all.
same happened to Sasanian, idk if they told u in school or not but there was a huge campaign before Sasanian fall, and they finally completely defeated roman empire and restored achamanied empire's lands which it was their goal from the beginning. they promised Iranian that they were restore those lands and at the time it had become even bigger than Achaemenid empire because they had all achamanied empire lands combine with some more territory such as what we call Yemen today and some part of KSA and many part of western boarders, but then they suddenly stop and said well that's it we defeated the enemy and it's like they had lose their cause and the empire which is now so bigger crumbled on it's weight and Arabs took the advantage of a destroyed empire.

Even the previously captured gladiator-like and enslaved or mercenary Germanic tribesmen, neither had the motivation and belief to serve the Roman emperor nor the power to withstand the Iranshahr's Cataphracts!
Later, the free Germanic(Romans called Germans Barbarian) and Iranic Sarmatian Alans finished off the western Roman empire for good and set up their own kingdom all over the Europe. Iranshahr had an important role to provide certain kinds of support to them against their common enemy. Hats off, the eastern Roman empire was tougher though as they effectively weaponized everything they had including certain religions. One of the two after-on fabricated government-based religions was called "the radicalized form of the other one" by Armenian sources. ;)
