Hand-on-heart, it wasn't a conscious process but having watched (re-watched?) his video today, it seems probable that I've seen it at some point in the last few years and passively absorbed its content which then subconsciously informed the making of my video. Honestly, I watch so much stuff on UA-cam, even with it on in the background sometimes while I'm working, it seems likely this is the case. You don't owe anyone an apology, there are billions of videos on YT with an infinite number of similarities. Your video has meaning - in that you accurately reported what you'd actually witnessed Noel playing. James Hargreaves is a well-meaning but hopelessly misinformed bellend - he holds the world record for fabricating the most BS about Oasis. He is infamous for his baseless theories. The video where he wrongly guesses who played the individual licks in Some Might Say is a case-in point. I've been playing DLBIA for 28 years and I never knew this chord until you figured it out. I like how you used solid evidence to reach your conclusion, and weren't merely presenting guess work as fact, as Hargreaves invariably does. Keep up the good work!
I noticed right away as soon as Noel got to that part of the song, Mick leaned in and the physical reaction he had was priceless, like"finally I can see what chord/voicing it is!"
The TPS episode was really great, I was a massive oasis fan as a teenager, it’s what me want to play guitar, seeing that Noel still seems to love the process was great and that he too is like the rest of us and watches gear vids on here!

I loved when he recalled asking Dan for bigger buttons on the GigRig switches a couple of years ago, but Dan refused. The Noel says something like "That's okay, I only wrote Wonderwall!!" I’ve seen Brad Paisley use a similar chard to move from the V-iv, but usually it’s quick and only partially picked. Noel’s reasoning for never playing barre chords was brilliant btw.
The G# isn't the root as it's a chord inversion. The G# is the major 3rd in E major and it's an inversion of E7, with the G# as its lowest note in the bass. To put more simply, if any note from the chord is played below its root, it's an inversion. Sometimes, if a chromatic line is being used in a chord progression, in this case it's the walk up from G,G# to A, the middle chord is using its 3rd as the lowest note, whereas the G and A have regular voicings, with the root as the lowest note in the chord. I'm not much of an Oasis fan but I have been playing guitar for 41 years and really enjoyed the show. Noel is a really good value guest. Edit, I meant to add that the chromatic walk up and using the major 3rd as the lowest note in the middle chord, is a very popular baroque figure and is used a lot in classical music. It's a clever trick and adds a really 'sophisticated' sound to songwriting, as you invariably have a really interesting chord, that obviously grabs the listener's ears that creates a sound of 'intrigue'.
My 90’s band here in the States does DLBiA, however we’ve always done it as Noel does it when he’s singing it solo, capo on 4, played very similarly to how Whatever is done. I picked it up that way after watching him play it at River Plate stadium

As much as I enjoyed watching Noel play his guitars on that pedal show and something I never thought I needed, to me it was James Hargreaves Guitar who really solved the mystery chord before That Pedal Show.

I always played the E/G# chord. It just seemed right to me. You're spot on in saying how much instrumentation is going on. Noel laid down track upon track for Oasis' trademark wall of sound.
Another little thing i noticed is he doesn't play a G as the second chord of the chorus. He plays a Cmaj9/B. The classic passing chord we often use to get to an Am from a C. Then later in the chorus he plays a C with the G as the root. Very cool.

Guitar World Magazine nailed it back in the late 90s. I saw it as a hybrid E7 with an inversion. STP used chords like this all the time. AiC had some crazy voicings too. It really was an exciting time in music.

I watched Mick's reaction 10x in a row! I've played that song a million times... I've always played an E7 and added a G# with my pinky on the 4th fret of the 6th string. But I was never really confident that was the right answer. I feel like we all just cheated on a test.
Nice vid. I felt the same when I watched TPS interview. The E7 is the dominant chord of A minor harmonic, and A minor is the relative minor to C major which the song is written in.

Incredible. Took me years to find that chord out. And like Chris said. It’s different in the Oasis guitar books. And other places I’ve looked over the years. However sounds awful played on its own. But works perfectly within the chord sequence to that song.
Something to remember when it comes to Oasis . . If in doubt about any chord progression or individual chords in Oasis' songs, remember that Noel was very enamoured with The Beatles. John's songwriting influence is all over Noel's songwriting.

This just proves what a great guitarist Noel is ,he must of had the sound of that chord in his head and then searched for it on the fretboard, he’s one of the best Rhythm Guitarist around as well with a great sense of timing, That episode of T.P.S. Was Great I was really surprised Noel done it as I always thought of him as quite guarded about his gear and sound, but he was very generous about it all . I just wished they’d gone in to the Acoustic side as well and what he uses, plus strings, but never mind we must be grateful he did do quite a lengthy episode 1 hour and 50 I think and it was Great well done Mick and Dan 👍🏻🌞❤️⭐️
Haha, sorry but no. Noel isn't a 'great guitarist'. He's average at best. And to say he's one of the best rythmn guitarist around is laughable. I love Noel and have been a fan of his since 1995, but he's not great by any means.
This is the cord I've used for years. It was only when I started dep'ing in bands/bands with two guitars that I started finding out that it was a mystery cord to a lot of people. I had massive arguments with some people on this as well. Always trust your ear, not the tab book (or online tabs these days).
I’ve always played it as an E7/G# (E7 with my pinky on 4th fret low E string), nice to know I wasn’t too far off technically! Noel’s version is far nicer to change to than mine though so I’ll definitely be switching to his!
Even if it's not technically a diminished chord, it serves exactly the same function. By putting the G# in the bass you're creating a diminished chord with only one note altered. G# diminished would be G#, B, D, and F if you're talking fully diminished. But people will often leave out the F in favor of just the triad. In the case of the E7/G#, you have all those notes but the F is lowered to a E. It's an important distinction, but from a music theory perspective where you analyze chords in terms of "function," there's no real difference. The G# diminished and the E7/G# both serve as passing chords creating a chromatic walk-up from the V to the vi, establishing momentary tension followed by a satisfying release.
Back in the day I saw Oasis at Earls Court in 95 a week after Wonderwall came out (or so). My mate bought the official song books and I copied out the chords by hand.and just like most songbooks, chords were obviously wrong in places. Thankfully between the pair of us, we videod most appearances and had bootlegs galore, so I watched and noted what Noel played. I worked out Wonderwall from Noel playing it backstage at Glastonbury in summer 95. Saw how he fretted the B and E strings on each chord and thought "so that's how he does it". I quickly realised that after some time, he changed around how he played certain songs live as well, which I always found great too. Damn, the time before the internet was much more difficult.
I had the "What's The Story Morning Glory" CD ROM for PC 1996 when I was 12 (so it's out there, but on an obsolete, unreadable media). And this was in there. It was kind of an interactive songbook, and just animated through the chord charts along with the songs. I learned "She's Electric" on my strat copy and played it at show-and-tell at primary school.
Phew. I've been playing it the way Noel does whenever I had to play the song. I thought the G#dim7 sounded too complex, so I figured it was just the usual Secondary Dominant trick but with the 3rd in the bass rather that the root. There's only one note in the difference, but the G#dim7 has an f in it, so the E7/G# was the obvious answer. I have too much time on my hands, obviously. Edit, check out James Bay's rather brilliant cover of the tune. It's a complete reinvention of it, but it's absolutely gorgeous

I've been playing that song since it came out, back in '95-'96 I knew a few basic notes, I learned songs by ear just by listening to them, in that arrangement I always used E7, on acoustic guitar, although I always saw Noel move his hand forward after the G chord in concert on electric guitar. They're actually the same notes, and it works well.
I've always played what I called g# over e7, prob wrong name since the e is gone, but it's 4-2-0-1-0-0. Bit of a stretch w the pinky. I remember jamming w a buddy like 20 yrs ago, and we messed around for hours trying to figure it out. I think he found it on piano then transcribed. I made the same face as the host did while watching that interview for the first time. Amazing stuff to watch. Noel doesn't get the credit he deserves as a guitarist I think. Not the most creative or technical, but so much skill with melody and rythym, which isn't as easy as people think it is.

that's funny - I played it half right all these years. I would slide the G root up to G# and just kind of let it ring out and of course mute the A string underneath, but I didn't think to hit the G string on the same fret. Definitely a fun unlock - thanks for the quick dive. I did watch that entire video and somehow didn't catch that chord which I'm very interested about. I was just mesmerized by all the stuff Noel was putting down that I didn't stop to look haha.
I particularly liked when Noel yells at TPS and every video maker who doesn't show the amp settings after laboriously documenting the whole signal chain otherwise.
I play that chord all the time and randomly guessed that would be it, even with the string mute and everything. The band unwound uses it alot which is where i got it from
There are a few people on UA-cam on who have played it correctly over the years. It definitely sounds better in the whole mix. Too many were confused because it just looks like he slides the G chord up a fret. E7 with the little finger playing a G# sounds full too, although not version correct.
I was almost right all these years. I used E7/G# chord but with a different fingering: 420100. Thanks for clarifying this, it bugged me for past 25 years 😅
As someone who has played BASS on that song, i must say if the bassline is played correctly (chromatism)... You do get the dissonance you are aiming for :) 😊 even if you miss "one note" within the chord
i was trying this discovered chord on the original key of the song (C major) and i realized that he uses the chormatic aproach with bass note, between chords, but also its a cadence V - V7 (1st Inv)/vi - vi if you want to transpose the key thats the harmony
Huh. I learned this by ear years ago and apparently had the chord right, but the fingering wrong. Always played it as an open E7 and flipped my pinky up to hit the G#. Super tough to play and clunky switching positions but it sounded right. So happy to find this easier way. Lol

Noel uses Rotosound Yellows on Electrics and Rotosound Bronze Jumbo Kings 12 on acoustics.

The G# diminished and the E7/G# both serve as passing chords creating a chromatic walk-up from the V to the vi, establishing momentary tension followed by a satisfying release.
Back in the day I saw Oasis at Earls Court in 95 a week after Wonderwall came out (or so). My mate bought the official song books and I copied out the chords by hand.and just like most songbooks, chords were obviously wrong in places. Thankfully between the pair of us, we videod most appearances and had bootlegs galore, so I watched and noted what Noel played.
I worked out Wonderwall from Noel playing it backstage at Glastonbury in summer 95. Saw how he fretted the B and E strings on each chord and thought "so that's how he does it".
I quickly realised that after some time, he changed around how he played certain songs live as well, which I always found great too.
Damn, the time before the internet was much more difficult.
Having him on that pedal show was like having him come hang out with me and my friends in our living room just to have a friendly chat with us.
I had the "What's The Story Morning Glory" CD ROM for PC 1996 when I was 12 (so it's out there, but on an obsolete, unreadable media). And this was in there. It was kind of an interactive songbook, and just animated through the chord charts along with the songs. I learned "She's Electric" on my strat copy and played it at show-and-tell at primary school.

Phew. I've been playing it the way Noel does whenever I had to play the song. I thought the G#dim7 sounded too complex, so I figured it was just the usual Secondary Dominant trick but with the 3rd in the bass rather that the root. There's only one note in the difference, but the G#dim7 has an f in it, so the E7/G# was the obvious answer. I have too much time on my hands, obviously.
Edit, check out James Bay's rather brilliant cover of the tune. It's a complete reinvention of it, but it's absolutely gorgeous
James could have learned the lyrics properly...
I think that also in the original studio recording the guitar is tuned to A=450hz instead of standard 440hz.

I've been playing that song since it came out, back in '95-'96 I knew a few basic notes, I learned songs by ear just by listening to them, in that arrangement I always used E7, on acoustic guitar, although I always saw Noel move his hand forward after the G chord in concert on electric guitar. They're actually the same notes, and it works well.
I discovered that chord during the 2000 Brussels live concert. Happy to know that was the right guess :D
I've always played what I called g# over e7, prob wrong name since the e is gone, but it's 4-2-0-1-0-0. Bit of a stretch w the pinky. I remember jamming w a buddy like 20 yrs ago, and we messed around for hours trying to figure it out. I think he found it on piano then transcribed. I made the same face as the host did while watching that interview for the first time. Amazing stuff to watch. Noel doesn't get the credit he deserves as a guitarist I think. Not the most creative or technical, but so much skill with melody and rythym, which isn't as easy as people think it is.

There is something strange about seeing Chris Buck knock out the same Oasis tune that we all play at home.
I gigged in South Wales pubs and clubs in the 90s and played it wrong all the while...
I miss the Tokai Strat that I had at the time - best Strat I've had!
My favourite part of that interview was his original amp set up and hearing it I was back in 94 again

that's funny - I played it half right all these years. I would slide the G root up to G# and just kind of let it ring out and of course mute the A string underneath, but I didn't think to hit the G string on the same fret. Definitely a fun unlock - thanks for the quick dive. I did watch that entire video and somehow didn't catch that chord which I'm very interested about. I was just mesmerized by all the stuff Noel was putting down that I didn't stop to look haha.
I particularly liked when Noel yells at TPS and every video maker who doesn't show the amp settings after laboriously documenting the whole signal chain otherwise.

There are a few people on UA-cam on who have played it correctly over the years. It definitely sounds better in the whole mix.
Too many were confused because it just looks like he slides the G chord up a fret.
E7 with the little finger playing a G# sounds full too, although not version correct.

As someone who has played BASS on that song, i must say if the bassline is played correctly (chromatism)... You do get the dissonance you are aiming for :) 😊 even if you miss "one note" within the chord
i was trying this discovered chord on the original key of the song (C major) and i realized that he uses the chormatic aproach with bass note, between chords, but also its a cadence V - V7 (1st Inv)/vi - vi if you want to transpose the key thats the harmony
I used to play the E7/G#, with another D note on the 2nd string, like this: 4X0430.
The big thing I got out of the TPS interview was that I wanna see a Johnny Marr interview - and I want to "borrow" a guitar from him.

Huh. I learned this by ear years ago and apparently had the chord right, but the fingering wrong. Always played it as an open E7 and flipped my pinky up to hit the G#. Super tough to play and clunky switching positions but it sounded right. So happy to find this easier way. Lol
