    I added a strip of Velcro around the back of my head as well because it was sliding off the front while I was sleeping. I have not slept this well in at LEAST 4 years. I sleep all night, maybe waking one time for just a few minutes but I'm too tired to do anything but go back to sleep. This has seriously saved me! I cannot remember the last time I felt this good when I woke up. No more headaches or paste mouth! Thank you so much!!

      What do you mean, Christina? Where and how exactly is the Velcro placed, and what is its function? *What* is it keeping from sliding--the cap, or the other Velcro or what?

    • @somechickinwa
      @somechickinwa 8 років тому +2

      Peg, I just put a piece around the back just like the video explains to do with the front and the cap stays on all night and does not slid around. I hope that helps :)

    • @pegdaniels253
      @pegdaniels253 8 років тому

      No, I'm still confused about what you're doing. He's got 2 small strips of Velcro on the sides of the cap and a longer strip of Velcro under his chin that attaches to those side strips. I don't know how a piece of Velcro around the back of the cap, either lengthwise or width-wise, would help, unless you're Velcro-ing the back of your head to a pillow ;-). Did you mean to say you put two more small pieces of Velcro *inside* the cap, directly underneath the strips on the sides, and you have a second longer strip as a second chin strap, so you're wearing two chin straps, one attaching inside, one outside? If you literally mean you've got a piece of Velcro around the back of the cap, on the outside, what the heck is attaching to it? Or if you mean you've got the strip inside but no second chin strap, how is that helping keep the cap on? Because of the friction of the Velcro against your hair (not that I can see that actually helping)?

    Thank you. All the ones I've been able to find start in front of the chin, pushing it back. I don't want to (painfully) realign my jaw, just keep it closed. I've been making my own using a headband. I sew a loop across the back to keep it from sliding off. It works very well for a week or two but then they stretch out. This looks like a great, permanent version of that.

    Thank you for this. I had a huge issue with my jaw relaxing during the night, causing a mouth leak, and all chin straps on the market in my country are garbage. This idea worked great - im my case, I used a cap with mesh top so it's a bit less sweaty during the night. I recommend sewing the velcro straps instead of glue

    ### 10 years later and I am just finding this now as I searched for "sleep apnea chin strap" with it being at the top of the search. This looks like an absolutely revolutionary idea and just by looking at this I am already sure that it will work flawlessly. Thank you so much, Doctor for sharing this. My only concern is what my hair will look like in the morning. I guess a shower will fix that. Is it a wives tale that constantly wearing a baseball cap makes you go prematurely bald.?? I am definitely giving this a "like"

    Oh my gosh! I had tongue cancer surgery and radiation that destroyed saliva glands. If I breathe thru my mouth it sets my mouth on fire. Used tape and worked great but some cheap silicone tape burned my lips so badly can’t do that anymore, so I’m going to do this! Thank you thank you

    JimmyCricket61258 Just read your comment about nasal congestion. My husband took steroids for years for really bad nasal/sinus congestion. Steroids were really hard on his nasal passages. While watching telly one afternoon, a doctor recommend the neti pot. Husband bought one, watched videos on how to do it PROPERLY (you must learn the right technique), and no more steroids or congestion. He does it morning and night, and he swears by it. I couldn't stand the feeling of the water up my nose, but if you're keen, look it up. Hope it helps.

    For anyone finding even the soft fuzzy side of the Velcro itchy and scratchy, I can highly recommend the tubular gauze meant to secure finger bandages. Mine is CVS brand and came in a rope 7/8" wide and 48" long and you can cut it to your desired length and slip it over the Velcro that touches your face. It's not really gauze though it called that, it's more of a smooth soft cotton. Someone else also mentioned cutting the toe out of a toddler sock.
    I chose to use a men's stretchy cap from the hair care section at Walmart, called Dri Sweat, & it works, but I did find I needed to add velcro horizontally across the back under the occipital bone to keep the cap from sliding forward. Kind of like the first pancake batter you pour, that one's usually not a keeper. Now that I know what I'm doing, the 2nd try should have a better result. I have long hair & it's a problem when it gets stuck in exposed Velcro!
    I don't use CPAP, I just used to tape my mouth to stop snoring & promote 100% nasal breathing,. It changed my life for the better, but I developed a horrible allergy to any and all tape adhesive.☹ So happy to find this video!

    I am so excited; I can hardly wait to make one for myself. Also, the insurance companies charge horrible cost of their supplies because Medicare will pay (with me paying 20%) and our poor gov't gets stuck being ripped off, one more time. Bless
    you!!! Also, believe me...the nasal "pillows" are so much better (and comfortable) than the bulky, AWFUL full face mask. I use the bi-pap machine, but the theory is the same.

    This method is as effective as the Knightsbridge dual strap water polo cap which costs $45-$50. Chinstrap and tape here. Comfortable and safe (tape has a slit and is dogeared for easy removal).

    Not sure about losing the backup of unconsciously being able to push away a strap that has some 'give' should there be an airway issue with the nose in the night. Good idea with the cap for anchoring it more for a bald head though, might try that bit.

    great idea, add a comfort sleeve to that chin strap and you got a winner, I make my own from real soft micro fiber type material, however, if you go to the infant clohes section of any store and buy some toodler socks, cut the toe out they work good as mask snuggies

    Is it comfortable or irritating . If it is then even if your lips open , it’s still providing some benefit than no strap . Also, I am assuming you can Velcro to the head heat of the mask? I’m going to try since I have some in my closet. It can easily be bought online, in any cvs type store, craft , Home Depot etc I’m just worried the material is too thick and will irritate the skin. I’m seeking the dojo mouthpieces that keep both upper and bottom teeth together but I have no idea where to start. I’ll try and see in a sporting food store or karate class in town this weekend. Did anyone see the guy selling his version for like 600$ online? Imagine

    Seriously? Does anyone who wears a CPAP have controllable hair after a night "sleeping"? Matter of fact, my hair has gained a permanent bend where my strap sits and this is actually pretty common, but doesn't make for a great cut when your hair is short. It's always sticking out where my strap sits no matter what I do, and this is not uncommon.
    I'm also an obligate nose-breather like a baby, so my mouth doesn't come open until I have no air moving through my nose ... but the nasal pillow migrates because I have no functional occipital ridge. The back of my head is flat, and more so, I have a child's large head, which means I can't get the right fit ... and I have NO idea why because children of all ages from birth to the official age of 9 should also gave CPAP options.
    I got the small size, which is better, but the damn thing still won't stay in place, so I'm going to have to make something. I can see the benefit of having a velcro strap and my design will likely use that tool, but the ends of the straps are hard and frankly, itchy and uncomfortable. I'm allergic to nylon, officially by an allergist, so anything nylon is a no-go. Many strips of velcro or elastic are nylon. Also, I cannot find a ball cap that fits properly without having that annoying plastic adjustment in the back that I have to either sleep on or avoid. So, what then?
    So, what say you to a solution for an adult with a child's large head, wearing a small headgear, that still slips easily because I have no functional occipital ridge, and the slippage wakes me often throughout the night ... so that I get NO reasonable sleep even when I'm wearing the CPAP and can breathe if the dang thing stayes in place?
