CPAP mouth leak and dry mouth is a major problem for many cpap users. It is No.1 reason many cpap users suffer from dry mouth symptoms and this can lead to more serious dental problems including tooth decay and gum disease.

CPAP therapy can be noisy but mask leaks and mouth leaks can really add to the noise and it can also disturb the sleep of you and your bed partner
Mouth leak can also reduce the effectiveness of the therapy as it reduces the pressure differential resulting in a lower delivered pressure.
So how do fix it?
1. Heat and humidity - Warm, moist air will help alleviate congestion and make it easier to breathe through your nose. Cold, dry air causes the your nasal passages to shrink making it harder to breathe through your nose so you are more likely to then breathe through your mouth.
2. Fine tune your cpap therapy pressure levels. Learn from me how to use your cpap data to fine tune your therapy levels so they are optimal and working at the lowest possible level whilst still adequately treating your snoring and sleep apnea. The lower the pressure, the easier it is to breathe through your nose
3. You can try a chin strap. There's lots available.

So my moronic medical device provider replaced my old Fisher Paykel with an Airsense 11 without the climate control & wifi options on the unit. Horrible dry mouth using a full face mask. I'll try the mouth tape. Thank you Nick.
I tried turning up my humidification but it caused nosebleeds
Guess what I get dry mouth so bad it's painful. So I got a hairband put it under my chin and over my head. To keep my mouth shut works great. CHin strap is expensive , hairband couple bucks
1st time using my machine last night. Woke up 6 hours later, fully refreshed! No pounding headache! The moment i woke up, I was not even tired or groggy. This is unbelievable.
Fake news. If it's your first time, your sleep deficit is too large to not feel tired after only 1 night. You would feel the differences in more subtle ways on your first night.
@@user-lv9sx4hr9cSomeone’s personal experience is not fake news. What gives you the right to say that?
That is encouraging, I cannot wait to get mine!
Congrats!!!! Awesome feeling for sure. Hope it's still going well.
@@user-lv9sx4hr9c Felt great on my first night.
Hey Mate, just started my trial 2 weeks ago after being diagnosed, I just want you to know how amazing your videos are for first time people, at first I got seriously depressed when I got told I had to wear this machine like I was getting old and needed life support system at night. I’ve watched so many of your videos and they helped me realise just how normal it is and has helped me make so many of my choices and problem solving.. I’m two weeks in and loving how I feel when I wake up, I can’t believe how bad I have felt for years now I’m waking up normally, I’m having trouble getting to sleep still at night but once asleep wow it’s amazing… anyway from a new member of the community love your stuff
Mate what brand did you get it from?
Hey man, welcome to the club. Glad some of the vids have been helpful on your journey :-). A lot of people struggle getting off to sleep and i think i will do a vid on that in the near future. All the beat mate, sounds like you're already kicking goals. Nicko
Sleep initiating was a problem for me when I first started therapy as well. Now that I'm used to it, I don't even like to lay down without it.
We
I feel you bro. I just started on one last night, at 42 years old 😞
Feel totally depressed.
I have just been diagnosed and am learning about the wonderful world of CPAP. Your videos are very helpful and easy to understand. I also appreciate the work that you put in to make them informative and entertaining! Well done - keep it up.
Using my airsense 11 for the first time tonight. I have watched a bunch of your videos and I appreciate all the information you freely share. It has given me realistic expectations, and a head start with the settings I should use.
First time using a CPAP Machine was a life changing experience. I felt rested and stopped snoring completely.
Before using the machine I would snore the house down, having hundreds of events each night, racing heart beat, panic attacks, and an experted heart attack.
Since getting the machine I have had none of these issues. Can't recommend it enough.
Sadly I have problem I feel like I am suffocating and then get panic and have to rip the mask of ;( I have had trouble before with breathing and falling asleep so the smallest thing can trigger it, l
Wow. You are really helpful and needed. Got my machine three days ago, 73 years old, not very technical, no one answers phones or 8m calling the wrong place for help, not sure yet. And here you are!!! Thank you. You’ve informed AND alleviated fears.
You should look for another provider. Especially in the beginning you need a lot of adjustment!

That’s much easier said than done. When I was first diagnosed I was fitted for my mask at the doctor’s office by a licensed respiratory therapist.
Now, I am pretty much on my own.
I have heard the automated messages so many times I can recite them.
I needed blepharoplasty for glaucoma.
Then a strip cut from my forehead I had been using the Dreamwear unicorn 🦄 connection over the head.
As to be expected this pulled hair from my head, having to push it further back.
Also, nerve pain in my forehead and hairline.
I was fitted for a full face mask, it caused my nose to be in a red circular pattern.
Much like the pig 🐽 snout people RN and doctor from ‘The Twilight Zone’
This mask had a 90
day factory warranty.
With the understanding it has to be returned by the supply house.
The receptionist was horribly rude, and terribly OBNOXIOUS!
Actually had the nerve to ask if I had worn it?!
HELLLLLL O! I didn’t take it home to admire it through the plastic packaging.
She told me,”then we can’t take it back!”
As she smugly amused herself on the company computer without a mask.
The warranty specifically stated it has to be returned by the supply warehouse.
It behooved her to put on a mask 😷 and 🧤🧤s to place it in plastic or a Ziplock bag.
She called the ‘supposed respiratory therapist’ warehouse manager, and other receptionist to watch her make a total @$$ of herself in an arena type setting.
Then told me I would be eligible for a new mask in two months if I wanted to wait.
The insurance was billed nearly $150, then I had to pay $100 out of pocket for another type of nasal mask.
That did the same red 🐽 resemblance before the oxygen connection broke 2 days later.
I called my doctor’s RN she set me up with yet another idiot.
That had no clue what she was doing.
I went back to wearing the old, first hair tearing, nerve throbbing outdated one.
I called yet another supply house that had me call. My pulmonologist 4 times; each time needing another fax history.
I was then greeted by a beast that told me to go on~line to a virtual mask fitting.
At their office 20-25 miles from my place.
I think not.
I will make do with the expensive trash I was “FITTED” for NOT!
If everything is going to be done virtually.
Get rid of the warehouses, joke professionals and have virtual everything.
Then shipped through Amazon.
RIDICULOUS and EXPENSIVE!
Honestly…your the most refreshing information that I have seen as I have been studying the new adventure of CPAP. WELL DONE!!!
Since I watched this video several days ago I've been using a medical paper tape and it works! Those tape strips on Amazon are a bit expensive although they have some cheaper alternatives. Your videos are very helpful in getting the most out of my CPAP machine. I watched your video on how to adjust the clinical settings, which helped reset my wife's from CPAP to Autoset. Her's was set to CPAP pressure of 9. When she was in the hospital recently they set the machine on Autoset 4-9 and it worked perfectly! After resetting her machine she sleeps better. We both have the ResMed AirSense 10. I've tried using a chin strap and it doesn't keep my mouth closed so the tape is perfect!
I am in Canada and using a bi-pap machine nightly. Your videos are so helpful in assisting me to get the best use of my Dream Station and to correct problems. Thank you for your time and sharing your wonderful tips.
I am so glad I found your channel!!!! I'm exploding with gratitude 🙏
Hi Mate, I just want to thank you for wondeful videos. They are very helpful and informative. I'm new CPAP user and thanks to you I was able to adjust my machine in the first week of using it. With right settings I adopted very fast to sleeping the whole nights with it and I actually love how great I feel during a day. Thank you!
Thanx Nick for all your helpful videos. They really take the complexity out of using cpap machines.
I have been battling this with my cpap for almost 2 yrs. My pharmacy and sleep clinic just keep telling me I need a new mask and tube. I have tried 3 new mask and tube 3 times, nothing changes so I gave up on them.
I have learned more in 8 minutes than they have taught me in 4 yrs.
Thank you. Can't wait to try your suggestions.
Cheers from the states! I really enjoyed your video. I always refer to myself as a mouth breather so that part of your video really resonated with me because it's in line with what my doctor said. He said I can use the nasal pillows even though I was skeptical because as a mouth breather I felt it wouldn't work. My mouth and jaw relaxes and I sleep with my mouth open at night. I never did until about 6 years ago or so. I tried the chin strap and its too uncomfortable. I have used the mouth tape and I much prefer that. My doctor is switching me from the Amara View face mask to the nasal pillows and I'll use the mouth tape. My doctor thinks eventually I won't need to use the mouth tape as I learn to breathe through my nose at night. I am always so very tired all the time and rarely go into REM where I have dreams. I miss being able to dream and they are very rare now for me. Thanks for your video. It was very good and helpful.
I can’t thank you enough for your knowledge and the relaxed way you present your advice to an often anxious audience- so grateful 👏❤️
Happy to help and appreciate the kind words
As a recently diagnosed apnoea patient, I find your posts very helpful and encouraging, thank you🥰
Nice one Jenny, thanks for the great comment. Lots of love. Nicko
Thank you for this! I'v been struggling with dry mouth using nasal pillows forever, and couldn't get a full mask to work properly. I was able to adjust the pressure and fit and now I sleep like a baby, thanks to this video
I like this guy. He's honest and completely down to earth. Subscribed, and I'll be back for more.
He's not
This is great information. It seems to me that I usually wake around 5am because my nose (I'm a nose breather and use a nasal pillow) is plugged and have to get out of bed and sit for about an hour before all is well again. I'll have to try this tonight. Thanks. Glad I found your channel!
Can't thank you enough Nick! Your information and tips make so much sense!
I’m so glad I came across this, thanks much! Haven’t been using my CPAP but now I am.
Glad to hear brother! All the best. Nicko
Excellent video-- OMG so very helpful--- definitely turning my humidifier up a couple notches!!! Many thanks !! Keep up the good work.
This is a very helpful video. It does a great job in revealing why we need these things.
Thanks again for making a great humorous video over a common issue of CPAP therapy . Fortunately I only get dry throat when I use my air mini.
Thanks. Love the channel. Really good info. Unfortunately found you through just having received my philips recall notification but grateful I found you nonetheless.
Love your videos, wishing I had found you sooner than a week or so ago. I’m a 20 year APAP wearer, nasal mask with chin strap. I was doing “ok” until the last 6 mos or so. I had another study last week and I did pretty good with the hybrid nasal/mouth mask. So much more freedom the way it’s made & tubing at the top of my head. After 3 nights tho, I’m having such a dry mouth, but my O2 saturation is on point compared to 70’s & 80’s.😢
I’ll try the tape. I have contact dermatitis tho & don’t do well with adhesive. Tonight I’m going to try chin strap with the hybrid mask.
What brand chin strap is that in this video?
Also, not everyone apparently is trainable and I have high pressure with a deviated septum, with no plans for surgery for that!
Great suggestions. Thanks for having sensible reqs and funny, illustrative clips!
You're doing a great job here, you're awesome!!!
I just wanted to pop in and say that I struggled at first. I'm also a sleep talker in addition to someone with a severely deviated septum and osa, BUT I'm still able to use a nasal pillow mask. Oddly enough it seems that I've subconsciously trained myself to close off my soft palate when I'm sleep talking so the air doesn't rush out unless I make certain nasal sounds. (I partially wake on occasion so I'm aware but unable to control what I'm doing, which is how I know.) The best advice I have is to wear your mask before bed. Lay in bed and watch tv or read a book for an hour. Just get used to wearing it and breathing normally. That's what my sleep specialist recommended and I found it to be most helpful. It also helps any initial swelling you may have to start to go back down.
I appreciate the positive approach of these informative and funny videos. Thank you! 😇
I appreciate the kind words mate. Glad you're enjoying the vids. Cheers
Awesome, Thank you. I learned more from your video than from two technicians and multiple people on the (No) help line.
G'day, super happy to hear that brother! It's comments like these that make all the hard work worthwhile. Have yourself a great day my friend and an even better night! Cheers
Just found your channel and I sub'd. Been using a CPAP for a year now. I need all the tips I can get. Thank you for sharing your info.
Awesome Paul. Cheers for that! Plenty of tips here mate and you can always let me know if you're struggling with any particular aspect. All the best. Nicko
Nick... wow, you are always SO helpful... this really meant a lot for me. I'm new on CPAP, did the full face mask (because I told the CPAP provider I was a "mouth breather", huh!). That didn't work. Tried the Resmed P30i pillow mask and I love it... except mouth leaks. I called the CPAP provider and all they said was that they need to order a chin strap. But not you, Nick... you gave FAR more important information and i'm eager to make the adjustments, until I adapt to CPAP. Can't thank you enough for your super helpful channel, mate!
how’s it going? i’m only 19 barely just got my machine i have an over bite and always been a mouth breather with asthma.
Great tips! After using a cpap machine for a year, my recent dental check-up revealed more cavities than I had had in the previous 30 years. I was prescribed a special toothpaste and, after watching this video, purchased the chin strap and oral mouth tape you recommended. I wish I had known this when I began this therapy. Thank you so much for your video!
Hi Robert, very sorry to hear that. Can you let me know the name of the toothpaste you are using? Thank you
Nick
So what’s the name of the toothpaste
I bet the toothpaste is the GC MI Paste Plus. A friend recommended it to me and I purchased it at a dentist office. 25.00 for a small tube but should last a long time. What I was told to do was smear a small dollop of the Paste over my teeth before bed. Do not rinse out. Also use Biotene dry mouth gel on tongue. I find this helps. Plus I use a chin strap with my nose pillow mask.
My dentures smiled.
Hi, I just came across your channel and thank you so much for doing these informational videos. I recently have gotten sinus surgeries and still trying to transition in breathing through my nose. I was diagnosed with severe apnea this came very useful to know. I have tried mouth taping and I feel I'm suffocating.
Even at the lowest levels my lips release air and I end up welding my mouth together! Took me awhile to figure out why chin straps didn't work! I use tape to hold the mouth shut. Also in my case, warm moist air actually congests me. I haven't used additional humidity in years and find sleeping much more comfortably. I think you just have to try both ways.
Thanks for all your great mask reviews. I tell new CPAP users to visit this YT site and another and tell them to go through all your videos, they are that important!
So will I have to tape my lips closed forever? Or will the muscles learn?
@@braxtonbrandy I have no idea how your muscles learn here. I would expect to use tape pretty well the rest of your life. I have been using tape for about 9 years.
I love your channel it’s so helpful
Thanks for producing your videos and sharing all the useful information. I wish my provider took the time explaining things and being as helpful as you are to your viewers. Wearing a CPAP does not come naturally.
You can blame that on Medicare and the insurance companies. I had a nice person, a respiratory therapist who worked for the vendor. He came to the house and fitted me with masks and really helped me. Then Medicare decided to reduce their benefits and the respiratory therapist job was eliminated. So now we all have to figure it all out outselves.
It's a nightmare situation. I know many people who are prescribed CPAP and then quit because of the negative experiences. When they contact their provider, they get another ill-fitting mask to try.
Great information Nic. I’ve been using mouth tape for the past few months and they do work wonders! I love the nasal pillow so much more than a full face mask.
Hi Darlene, that's great to hear :-). lots of love. Nicko
So thankful for your info! GOD BLESS YOU!!!
Just got my cpap. Got the nasal mask and I struggled with it as you described. Thanks for this.
Thank you man... Your videos are very detailed and easy to understand.
Thanks trying to get to grips with this new thing in my life with your help.
This is the first time I’ve ever seen your videos, (or any videos on sleep apnea at all),
You put out a lot of good info so thank you very very much for
#1) taking the time to put out your videos and educate people (like me) on so much about sleep apnea machines I did not know! And
#2) for caring enough about others to do this in the first place!
You’re #🥇 in my book!
YOU’RE AWESOME NICK & THANK YOU SO MUCH‼️ 😘
good stuff! thanks! I do have dry mouth with my CPAP, but, I had dry mouth before it -- without getting up 3-4 times a night and feeling drousey all day. CPAP has changed my life for the better. I can deal with the dry mouth, but your suggestions will certainly help. Thanks.
You awesome if you knew what I’ve been through with people who are in this business and know NOTHING!!! Thank god for you
Thanks for the kind words Michelle it's a bit of a jungle out there
I am so grateful I found this channel. I had given up on my cpap until the other night. I had enough. I have a dream station and somehow I found your video about removing that stupid foam. Luckily I didn’t really ever use it to begin with. Last night was my first night back with it and I got 1.3 hours with it. I roll onto my back and my airway closes so the mask blows off my face. But, I’m going to keep at it. I just want to sleep. I know it’ll bring down blood pressure and I’ll just feel better in general. Thank you so much. I actually feel like I have some support. The sleep center I went to was utterly useless. Thank you again!
I have been a CPAP user for 10 years and about 5 years ago got the nasal prong mask because it was so compact and less cumbersome. I developed a lot of sinus problems and went through hell with nasal and sinusitis. I had to discover on my own that it was all caused by the nasal prong mask. I got a full face ,ask and have not sneezed since. The oxygen company or respirologist had not heard of this. I suffered greatly. It was too much pressure on the nasal cavity and everything became irritated and inflamed. Take your health in your own hands people.
Thank you, I’m glad to hear I can change my habit.
Amazing video . Thank you so much for this very intelligently knowledge filled video
I got a neoprene chin strap very much like the first style you showed. I didn’t want to do it but mouth-breathing was a problem so I had to fix it. It really worked well. I found that it actually is comfortable. Yes, it’s weird but wearing a mask is weird in the first place. I highly recommend it.
Good advice on your “how-to” videos Nicko, I’ve been using the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, (CPAP) machine since 2011. Before I went in to get tested for having a CPAP, I had realized that when I go to sleep. I start going into a deep sleep waking up approximately two or more times a night (and I had stopped breathing 45 times every hour). Great job on this informative video mate. Ryan- from California, USA
Hey Ryan thanks for your comment it really comforted me this is night number two for me I was just curious on my CPAP machine Luna G3 how can I find out how many hours it was used last night? I hope you read this and get back with me
Great information. My only comment in relation to dry mouth is that (in my opinion and experience) the majority of dry mouth is due to the pressure being too high. My technique was to progressively reduce the pressure until I consistently had no dry mouth but still a very good AHI score. The other point I would make is the reason for pressure being the problem is your tongue. Try opening your mouth and then put your tongue up on the roof of your mouth. Note that when you breath in or out the air only moves through your nose. As soon as you move your tongue away from the roof of your mouth air will flow in and out you mouth. So, if you have your mask on and air coming in through you nose at high pressure the tongue cannot maintain the seal on the roof of your mouth so the air, instead of going to your lungs, goes out though your mouth and dries out your mouth. I am not convinced that a chin strap helps with dry mouth. The air will still come out through your mouth despite the strap if the pressure is high enough (I have one and use it but I am not convinced it helps). The way to fix the problem is reduce the air pressure until the dry mouth stops but your other indicators such as AHI are still good.
No dry mouth will also help w tooth decay but that is besides the point ☝️ just a tip
Very helpful! I just switched from a full face mask to a nasal pillow and this made me feel more confident in my change! I don’t have to be a “mouth breather” !
Glad it was helpful! Cheers
Nick, here's another thanks, I've actually been on CPAP therapy for years (been through 3 machines). Currently I found your videos because my Phillips machine has been recalled and I am trying to find a good replacement. And, I didn't know that I could adjust the pressure, thought it had to be at the prescription level. On another note, I don't if it is true, but I had wear a 24 hr EKG monitor, the tech congratulated me for coming out of my coma, apparently by pulse dropped to 16 BPM during sleep. This is the not sure if it's true part, I credit my CPAP for keeping enough oxygen in my system to keep me alive.
@@jimmydcricket5893 Sorry, didn''t take it at the time and didn''t think to ask.
The data from your machine should tell you the extent of mouth leaks. I have had these issues and tried a few things and eventually settled on a full face mask. Have been using various ResMed masks for a few years now and have had a F20 for a while and it has been great. Stopped the leaks and dry mouth and has been very comfortable. Also works well when you have a cold and a blocked nose, so you can keep up the therapy. Love your vids and no nonsense approach of telling things as they are.
Thanks for mentioning dry mouth and dental decay. As a dentist and CPAP user, I have been using Rx strength fluoride to help decrease the cavity risk. However, your tips are terrific. Well done mate.
Thanks Don, much appreciated mate. All the best. Nicko
Is that something a dentist prescribes?
@@ginnymilliken8395 A dentist could prescribe the fluoride. Also, a sleep apnea doc would work in conjunction with a dentist if the CPAP is not a viable option. In that case, a dentist may be able to fabricate a dental device that may be of help for sleep apnea patients.
Yes, I use the RX toothpaste too. My dentist sells it to me. My last dental repair cost me $3,000.
Thank you. This was extremely beneficial.
Just did my first night on the CPAP machine last night - thank you for your videos - I am straight binging!!
Great information as anything that helps folks get the benefits of CPAP therapy is wonderful. I’ve used it for the last ten years, sleep wonderfully, and awaken refreshed every morning.
Great to hear it! Appreciate the kind words too. Best wishes. Nick
I envy you. I’ve been battling a BIPAP for more than a year and never slept worse, never feel rested, on mask #9.
Thank you! Love the music & ending too 😊
You're very welcome. Glad you liked it
Brilliant advice I’ve been using my resmed auto for the last 2 months and have struggled with leaking terribly
Thanks Graham, appreciate that brother. Best wishes. Nicko
The longer I sleep the more I leak. The mask does not stay put on long hair. I start by smashing the mask against my face but if I let go during sleep, I get a low score.
Hello, I just watched this video after it popped up on my page. I prefer the nose piece because the face mask is too confining due to being claustrophobic. Thank you for providing these informative videos, I'm now a new subscriber, many thanks from Canada!
Great video! Thanks I’ll try.
Great tips and advice! I'm now trying out a cervical collar to keep my airway from closing. The chin strap and the mouth strips don't work for me when my chin goes to my chest - my mouth still dries out. I tend to curl up in a fetal position when sleeping and that causes my airway to close, I think. The cervical collar keeps my neck straight and my mouth mostly shut. I may use the mouth strips too and may also have to lower the pressure on the cpap. Humidity helped my nose open up a little.
Hi James, thanks for the comment and for sharing your experience. Let me know how you find the cervical collar mate. All the best. Nicko
Thanks for the great info nick.
Thanks brother! You're very welcome. Nicko
Nice video, makes sense with a lot of the issues I've been having. I have been referring to myself as a mouth breather but I also have a deviated septum and I am considering surgery to correct. Even during the day I find myself gasping through my mouth as I have come to realise I'm not getting enought through my nose. Even when I exhale through my nose air only comes out one side and I don't have a cold and I'm not congested. Looks like I'm stuck with the full facemask for now although I did just pick up the nasal pillow type to try out and see how she goes.
Get the nose surgery it helps a lot
I’m still healing from mines
And I feel that was my biggest issue breathing
I have a crap machine and I’m terrified it’s causing depression for me I tried the full mask and oh no no , then I got the mask to where it covers your nose and I’m still having issues, next mask I’ll try is nasal pillows and I hope that wor
But have a bad nose all your life and now after the surgery, having to train your self to breathe again is kind of challenging
Have you tried nasal strips, I have learned that I have a deviated septum and an enlarge turbinate myself, and with my allergies, it causes me to constantly have a plugged nose.. in which I mouth breath. So I have been considering the surgery but will help this mouth taping thing will help me get use to breathing through my nose... so I don't have to resort to spending that kind of money.
Thank u young man looove the video kids wife, the whole kit and kapoodle!! Nice step by step instructions.
Clamping a paper tissue between your lips also works. It keeps your lips together without the inflexibility and tightness of tape. I’ve used this for years.
Wow, what a great tip! I will have to try it :-). Cheers
Do you mean like a Kleenex tissue? Do you fold it to a small narrow piece? Thanks for any help.
@@brendao.7732 yes, Kleenex. I tear it in half and clamp it between my lips. The moisture from saliva keeps it there. I discovered this several years ago during a flight when I covered my mouth with a tissue to spare fellow passengers the sight of my gaping mouth in sleep.
I’ve used a CPAP for over 20 years and am waiting for my 4th machine (replacement by recall). I’ve taken it to UK, US, on cruises and back and forth to our daughters and cabin. All of my units have been the self adjusting kind that go up and down as I need it. I don’t go anywhere where without it…
I am a chronic mouth breather and use a full face mask Quattro Air with my PR Dreamstation Auto BIPAP. My AHI was consistently in the mid teens which is not desirable.
I started applying a strip of 3M Micropore tape over my lips at night, 2” wide tape by 3” long. My AHI dropped immediately and significantly and my weekly AHI is now averaging 0.6, in fact several nights of 0.0 which is amazing. Why I waited 6 years to try this simple solution is beyond me.
Some people complain about too sensitive skin but I put lip balm on my lips prior to applying tape to area above and below the lips. Tape is somewhat hard to remove but just pull slow and steady. No tape residue.
Thanks Nick,
I've been on cpap therapy 7 weeks now. I'm really loving the information you provide. Thankyou so much. I thought I was a mouth breather but I'm persisting with a nasil pillow mask and things are improving.
Love your work. Thankyou.
Great work Steve! Glad to hear from someone who thought they needed a full face but is persisting with a nasal variety. All the best brother. Nick
Hey Nick, your videos are great thank you. I have just been diagnosed....
Hi Shareef, i'm glad you're enjoying them. Much love. Nicko
Been using cpap for 5 years now. Will be trying some of these ideas as I too suffer from dry mouth.
I've found the nasal cushions suit me best and do use a chin strap.
Thanks for sharing. I am one of those patients who has developed a bad habit of breathing through my mouth. I do use a full face mask but find I chew the bottom of the mask. I’m on my 5th mask now. I duped try the nasal cannula type but found that I ended up mouth breathing again. Now I see you referring this tape which I’ve not heard of before. Nor have I heard of the chin strap. These are definitely items worth checking into. Thank you for the information.
Hi Sherry, certainly worth a try :-). Best wishes. Nicko
Just found you! Sleep study this weekend! Bipap girl!
I've been using tape across my mouth since the first week of having a C Pap. I buy it from the dollar store. Once I was having a sleep night at a clinic and I was really embarrassed for wearing the tape. I'm so thankful that it's a thing. lol.... Greetings from Northern Canada.
Hi Susan, thanks for sharing your experience and insights. Yes it's certainly a thing :-). A big hi from Melbourne. Nick
2" painter's tape works great. Not pretty, but cheap and effective. Also, easy to remove in the morning.
I've also tried lip balm, especially the stickier varieties. I use Blistex. It provides a light sealant that also prevents air from leaking in or out.
Oh wow thanks
Greetings Nick from Florida. First I’ve heard about dental issues with cpap users. Will you be doing a more detailed video on that? Thanks for the videos!
Hey Doug, i'm not sure mate. Certainly a very common problem though. All the best mate. Nicko
Hello, just found your channel, love it! I wanted to ask you I have this awful red mark on the top of my nose from my CPAP machine is there anything I can do to cushion up so it doesn't leave a mark?
I have a deviated septum but still found no issues breathing through the nose piece on the Airsense 10 that I am going through a trial at the moment. Thanks a lot for your informative videos. Living in Brisbane, I have realized that there is no difference between filling the humidifier with water or forgetting to fill it up for over 2 weeks. Maybe a scam, I don't know. Thanks for your video.
Hi Nick, thank you for one o& the funniest thumbnails ever 👍👍👍😆😆😆. Love the content too.
Thank you for these videos!!!
Thanks for the tips! I have had a couple of times where I work up with a dry mouth, stiff tongue and cheek and even an infection in my teeth that didn't need any root canal, just antibiotics. I may want to consider the miserable looking jaw closing strap. I have allergies. When they're bad I cant breath through my nose at all. 1% of the time I'm on a full face mask and hate it. 99% of the time I use the nasal mask and like it but having a painful infection in my jaw is no fun.
When I started my therapy, I just went for the full face mask because I know I can't not breathe through my mouth. It just isn't comfortable. I don't really consider myself a mouth breather, though. At least not during the day. Now that I have to stop therapy due to the Respironics Recall my mouth is way more dry in the mornings than it ever was when using the therapy.
Try removing your false teeth before bedtime
Thank you. I’m forwarding ur info to hubby… you’re great…
That's very nice of you to say. Thank you :)
I’ve used chinstraps for years now. This is the first I’m hearing about mouth tape. I’m going to buy some and test it out. Thank you.
This is so helpful ! I experience dry mouth & drooling a lot of nights. I'll try these things to see if they help. I do use the full face mask. Thank you !
Nice one Kevin, glad you enjoyed the vid. Let me know if you have any success with the tips. Nicko
Hey Nick, good tips there mate. It took me about 3 years to work my way from a full face mask down through the range of different masks to the Resmed P10 that I use now. I had to basically re-train my breathing habits to breathe through my nose, now I realise I could have done it much quicker. It was my mistaken belief that I needed to breathe through my mouth that made me take so long to switch to a nasal pillow, but now I have it is just so much more comfortable and I would encourage anyone who feels the way I did to give the nasal pillow mask a try, it may take a while but eventually it will be worth it. I very rarely suffer from dry mouth now but I used to a lot when I was on the full face type of masks.
Hey brother, man that's awesome! I 100% agree with you. It's certainly not for everyone however for those who are struggling a bit with the full face masks it's certainly worth a try. Best wishes friend. Nicko

Thank you Nick for the fantastic, informative videos. Followed your amazon link to try out the mouth tape. Thanks again and keep up the great work. Oh, with the cpap, antidepressant meds or so many other reasons that causes dry mouth to dental decay try biotene mouth rinse or spray
Nice one Frank. Glad you enjoyed the video brother and thanks for the great tips. Nicko
Saw my dentist for first thing since starting bipap. He said biotene makes a big difference.
I just found this, great! I have been a cpap for some time.I do use a just nose mask and love it. My first doc was a pill! He set me up with 17 lb pressure right at the start. How awful, I inflated!! The "ext5ra" air went into my stomach, yikes! Once in the middle of the night and at wake up, I would sit on the edge of the bed and belch for a few minutes, just to deflate my stomach. Yeugh! The (much better) doc I have now has got my pressue in my (now) Bi-pap at 6 and 11, so 11 is now my high side. SOOOoo much better! So believe our aussie friend, get your perssure fine tuned!!
Nice one mate. Glad to hear the BiPAP is working out for you. here's a vid i did on Bipap vs CPAP a little while ago if you're interested. ua-cam.com/video/29sjchpoh0k/v-deo.html
Great video Nick! You mentioned lowering your pressure if switching from a FFM to a nasal mask. How much would be a good starting point if I'm currently at 5-11 with a FFM?
Hey mate, yeah it can certainly help in the early stages as many struggle to exhale against the higher pressures just through their nose. There's no magic number, you just start at a level you can manage and then when you get comfortable with that you move up a notch etc. It's like doing weights at the gym, you start on a weight you can lift and then gradually you add more weights as your body adapts. The body can do anything, it's incredible and it will adapt to what ever environment you put it in. Good luck. Nicko
I have used a c-pap for over 10 years. I have yet to find a full-face mask that doesn't leak if I move, even slightly. I use a nasal pillow mask now and I use breathe-rite strips to keep my mouth shut. I am a total mouth breather and so this is the only way I can get rest. I use both the Biotene Spray and the Gel. Then I coat my lips with a moisturizing stick, like Vaseline. I cut the strips in half (the long way) to make the box last twice as long. It has worked great for me for many years.
Same as me
Hi Nick, its me again from Jamaica.Just an update.I switched from a full face mask to a nasal "air touch cushion" together with a mouth seal.It helped with my dry mouth a lot.Still a little dry but now manageable. Also as you said I am adjusting to possibly not having to use the mouth seal.Tried a few nights without it and things look promising. Finally, went to my dentist worried about the dry mouth and possible resulting cavities but had none.Again thanks so much for your help and guidance and hope what I have shared will give those who still have dry mouth challenges encouragement not to give up.Cheers, Mate!😅.
Cheers brother! Sounds like you're doing great
Thanks Nicko, God Bless
CPAP therapy protects your heart. Every time you have an episode you deprive your heart of oxygen.
I totally got rid of the need via diet change. The 1st thing I cured myself of within 2 weeks of going keto.
That's great Wayne, big congrats mate. Nicko
Glad it worked for you. I have had sleep apnea since I was chronically underweight (135 lb male, 5 ft 9 inches).
I lost 25kg but unfortunately my skull and jaw are deformed so weight loss made no difference for me.
It should still help
