Honestly, as someone struggled with playing through the Battletoads at an early age, I really enjoyed the series in a bizarre way because it was still so fun to go through the zany story and interesting mechanics just to progress and see where the story would take you. And when I remembered that Battletoads had actually entered into Killer Instinct 2013 in the form of Rash being a playable fighter, I just knew there was something beautiful to behold about the whole series and the concept of them. Anyways, I really enjoyed your video and looking at a retrospective of the series as a whole, and I wish you the best of luck with all of your future videos. With people saying that they hated the artsyle, it kind of reminds me of how people absolutely hated the Rise of TMNT art style when it was first revealed. It was revealed during the giant cartoon shitty reboot wave and it, along with Mikey saying "Memes are lit" turned off people HARD.
Maybe it's due to my love of soft big guys but I'm now extremely attached to Pimple and want to seek out a long play of this. He's just trying to live his life...
I like the art style-I think that there aren’t enough 2D cartoony games coming out today. This (funnily enough given its original nature as trying to capitalize on the Ninja Turtles trend) really reminds me of Rise of the TMNT in the general reception described here. Both have extremely bouncy, unique, colorful, and (dare I say) overall good art styles that deviated so much from what fans expected that they were dismissed immediately by said fans.
I like both art styles as well, but comparing this to ROTMNT is very disingenuous because how they're executed are polar opposites. ROTMNT wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but it was supremely confident in its own direction and style, with every moment of the show oozing with flashy pizzazz and some of the best fight scenes in the franchise. Eventually people caught on to what it was doing and couldn't help but respect it. This game on the other hand, is not that. The actual cutscenes don't translate the style the gameplay does, with cheap, janky puppet rigging that does the gameplay a huge disservice. It hides behind layers of irony and meta humor like it's TTGO, insulting even the audience that's willing to give it a fair chance. It's a thoroughly insecure product through and through, which is why even years after it released the people willing to defend it are few and far between.
@@felixdaniels37 I completely agree with you, however talking moreso about fan reception to the style rather than anything else really. Sorry if I wasn’t clear enough about that
Yeah I think the backlash to the Dark Queen's redesign and then the dev response to said backlash (basically calling anyone who didn't like the redesign sexist) overshadowed the game itself so you essentially had an inbuilt hate audience before the game even released. Meanwhile Streets of Rage 4 was, straight up, just a better game than Battletoads. Not to mention it didn't even live up to the other 80s nostalgia beat'em up which set the gold standard, Double Dragon Neon, which came out 8 years earlier in 2012, let alone Streets of Rage 4.
Hi! I had a huge binge-watch of your content yesterday, and this was the video that encouraged me to subscribe - you have an INCREDIBLE sense of humour and comedic timing! :) I also missed much of the original Battletoads mythos, as the genres I played when I was younger didn't overlap. So the 2020 game honestly just looks awesome, and I'm sad it was received so poorly. A lot of gaming seems to suffer from that currently - great projects tanked due to differing consumer expectations.
I love the fact that it is, essentially, the first 'abridged' series. Normally with shows being bought over from Japan you'll get 'show notes' for the series and each episode, giving the western dubbing studio something to work with...they didn't get that with Samurai Pizza cats. So they had to basically watch the original Japanese episode (and keep in mind, nobody in the production understood Japanese) and sort of 'guess' as to what was happening. Since it was clear the original creators didn't care enough to send them the show notes, they decided to turn it into a 4th wall breaking comedy series instead with a lot of adlibbing by the voice actors. The funny thing is the western dub version of the show is actually *more* popular in Japan than the original release because the original is considered a sort of generic series, lacking the comedy elements of the western dub.
Would I have ever clicked on a battle toads video on my own accord? No. Are your videos so good that I end up watching things I never otherwise would have? Absolutely.
This game looks pretty good to me. I might have to pick this one up. Without this video I probably would have no idea it exists, so thanks. Really enjoyed the video!
I picked this up on sale because I just had to know if it was as bad as people say, but I still haven't played it yet because I apparently didn't need to know _that_ badly. Regardless, Battletoads is weird. I can't think of another IP whose appeal primarily developed from the first three levels of a single game. Seriously, I never knew anyone who got past the Turbo Tunnel, and I only occasionally encountered kids with Battletoads games beyond the first. I think people are more enamored with the idea of Battletoads than the actual series. (That arcade game is really dope, though. Too bad it's technically unfinished.)
The artstyle for this game makes the Battletoads feel like the weird slightly gross TMNT knockoff that Cartoon Network would've aired in the 90s if they could. Big Cow and Chicken vibes, in the best way.
I played this battletoads game, and I had fun in its beat em up sections, but dreaded the non beat em up stuff like the space section or the meditation platforming section. I guess that's how it was back in the day then, huh. Weirdly enough, I enjoyed the newer sinpler artstyle, but that may be because I never grew up playing the classics. I still hope that microsoft grows smart and lets rareware bring back more of their ips too for the peeps who love them!
I don’t get where some people were coming from when complaining about the art style it’s not bad and it clearly had a lot of effort put into it. I don’t know how you would expect a game where you play as anthropomorphic Toads and not be at least be a little cartoony.
I'll admit Im on the fence about this game. On one hand I LOVE the simple, yet difficult to master combat of the arcade game with intense bosses and nigh universal attack prioritization from said bosses and enemies, which really added a sense of adaptation to the game and its difficulty.. I also feel like going down a much more grosser n' gritty route for the Toads' aesthetic fit way better.. On another, I appreciate this game and the blood, sweat and tears poured into this games' animation and aesthetic. I also love the expansion of gameplay, swapping health-tied heavy attacks to individual attack buttons and the various gameplay styles.. I do wish the bosses could've expanded on the Arcade, fighting the bosses DIRECTLY and gradually tearing them down.. The gore and blood, along with the cartoonyness combined with the grungyness of the sprites made it way more fun..
Yea this game got kinda screwed. Sucks because it's pretty fun, just got kinda everything wrong in terms of showing it off. I think the biggest miss was the art style. It's not bad but a nostalgia peice like the battletoads probably should have leaned in to that and looked straight up like a playable 80s cartoon. But like how you remember them in your head over how they actually looked
Sadly, this video shows me why I just don't care about the battletoads: the variety is not good. Everyone talks about the beat em up stage of level 1, which is always the shortest part. Because then you get bombarded with stage after stage of different game design, and none of them are what you came for. And I get it, just focusing on the beat em up stuff would not really be in the image of the franchise, but it would make it way more interesting to me. Basically, alot of my childhood is just playing through the first level of battletoads in battlemaniacs and then switching to final fight 3.
I would recommend the arcade Battletoads game! It's pure beat-em-up (with only the last level being a shooter). It's really fun and each Toad plays slightly different from each other (This is the game that introduced that). The music really captures the Toads' essence. Unfortunately, it's locked to Rare Replay on Xbox 1 and emulation. Still, I would give it a try! It is technically unfinished though.
Honestly, they could be more accurate to the original design art or using 3D instead. The beam'up sections are one of the best of the genre with a focus in variety and mobility that is lacking in other games. Their should be focus in that and not make the other part so dawn long and it was a winner game.
I played this game two years ago and honestly thought it was pretty fun. Was worried to play it because of the bad reputation it got but I was glad to see I thought it was alright. Definitely has some flaws and it's not very great, but I see nothing but vehement hate thrown this game's way so I'm glad to see a more balanced take here. Personally my favorite part about this game is the art style. I really don't think it fits the Battletoads IP - I was hoping it would be more like the gritty comic book style of the arcade game - but it looks so nice and I'd love to see more games that have that same gloriously vibrant style. It looked like a cartoon came to life on my screen, I loved it. Of course the biggest problem was that it wasn't anywhere near as difficult as the original games.
@@pika-stashe404 Yea I probably shouldn't have even mentioned difficulty here honestly since I just played whatever the equivalent of Normal difficulty was called.
11:18 Seeing Battletoads 2020 being the 2nd most hated game from that E3 2019 chart and it only having half as much Pokémon SwSh shows how people went nuclear on those game like it was the end of the world. Jesus Christ.

Did you just did a frog-pun at 16:38? Wow. Lol. Something like that i would expect that from Amphibia retrospective.
Yayy bumbles Mc fumbles
I’m surprised you had the ability to hold back the puns.
So are the battletoads level 2 aqua, do they try to make bahamut shark, can i put them in my tear deck?
Hey Samurai Pizza Cats was awesome! And following the Power Rangers trend more than the TMNT trend.
Honestly, they could be more accurate to the original design art or using 3D instead.
The beam'up sections are one of the best of the genre with a focus in variety and mobility that is lacking in other games. Their should be focus in that and not make the other part so dawn long and it was a winner game.
29:02 got me way harder than it should’ve

1:52 - And i still think that Conker's Bad Thursday and Don't Hug Me I'm Scared are only british to mock all kid shows around the world.
Petiton for Bumbles to do Gen 2 ranking!
The Topians are pun-named "Uto & Pia".
There was a show based on battletoads, which was cancelled after one episode
Are you saying that even after doing the Battletoad Difficulty?
@@pika-stashe404
Yea I probably shouldn't have even mentioned difficulty here honestly since I just played whatever the equivalent of Normal difficulty was called.
11:18 Seeing Battletoads 2020 being the 2nd most hated game from that E3 2019 chart and it only having half as much Pokémon SwSh shows how people went nuclear on those game like it was the end of the world. Jesus Christ.
Battletoads one of the games I never heard
Just HAD to slip Frog The Jam in there, huh mister?
