Welding on the outside will contract/deform the tube..... The main reason this ram still works is the tolerance on the pistonseal. But, who cares, it works....

Well that is easy, but it will be more like testing its breaking point.
if you want too calculate how much it can take you can use this to get a avarage.
Tensile strength, mn, ps (MPa) : 45 000 if its grade A

    • @gabbermaikel
      @gabbermaikel 7 років тому +4

its pretty easy to calculate how stong an hydraulic cilinder would be. You need to know what the maximum pressure is and the surface area of the pist. If you know those 2 then you can calculate the strength.

Looks more like a concept build or an assembly rather than a build from scratch. Unless 90% of the build was done off camera, starting with a hydraulic cylinder or an extruded pipe instead of a piece of 'normal' pipe that had to have the weld seam removed then honed to be round. And then the piston had to be fabricated and the threaded collar with the o rings. . . Ever so much cheaper to purchase a manufactured cylinder than purchase the bits and pieces to make one! I KNOW because I looked into making as opposed to buying for a proof of concept project I developed and that was before the machining. Granted, you have bragging rights to say, "I made it" and it only cost me - if you include your time, 5 times the purchase amount

Dunno if he followed advice or not on this, but, focus testing shows that adding them increases visibility. For example in advertising, that's why you see some commercials with bold 'components'. Now, considering UA-cam etiquette 101 is to read the video description, and the fact that barely anyone does it, IF he did it to increase visibility, i find it perfectly justified.

Good job! Im working with this stuff(making pneum. and hydraulic seals and cylinders) for almost 20 years,
I don't want to criticize, but you made several mistakes,
    1. You didnt make "nest" for the steady rest on OD of the tube.
    2. You should face turn tube, make lenght, weld pipe conection, then make inner thread on tube,
becouse welding make tube a little bit spherical.(that why you couldnt maybe tighten the pilot boss)
Greetings from Bosnia and keep up with good stuff

    Digital Hydraulic Cylinder
Any good automatic control system is not primarily depends on the accuracy of the algorithm, both using PID and fuzzy algorithm or a variety of advanced intelligent algorithms, and precise execution device is the key to the success of the automation system! Digital hydraulic technology is the key to the development of many automatic control systems beyond the existing technology.
Digital cylinder, also known as: digital hydraulic cylinder, electro-hydraulic step cylinder, electro-hydraulic pulse cylinder, NC pulse hydraulic cylinder, etc.. It is a kind of digital servo valve, cylinder, sensor, feedback and control combination, hi-tech integration products of hydraulic transmission and control, and the full digital characteristics. It is especially suitable for high precision speed and position control, coordinated motion control of transmission system, especially in the large flow rate (KL / min), high frequency response servo control, it has unparalleled competitive advantage.
AEMETEC digital hydraulic due to the innovative design, fully use the digital structure, and thus its characteristics are completely digitized or labeled. For example, the displacement of the AEMETEC Digital Cylinder 0.01 mm corresponds to 1 electrical pulses; AEMETEC Digital Valve 0.01 degree corresponds to 1 electric pulses. Thus we can imagine AEMETEC Digital Hydraulic Control of existing production equipment, only work is to AEMETEC Digital Hydraulic (digital cylinder and digital valve, etc.) to send different frequency, number of electric pulse signal, without the need for another example is the traditional control system need to repeatedly adjust the proportion, integral, differential, temperature compensation parameters and so on, makes AEMETEC Digital Hydraulic control system is installed with, fully embodies the digital technology in the field of industrial technology perfect characteristics.

Cool video about fabricating a hydraulic cylinder but as a machinist who builds these on a daily basis I see a few problems. One you should drill and weld ports on first due to possible distortion of the tube for the head to screw on. It could possibly damage the threads as well. Another thing is to at least put a taper of some sort on the rod itself so you don’t damage the seals in the head. And after said and done at least put a good hone through the barrel after the barrel is fabricated. Besides that good video

Nice build ! I have always wanted to build my own mini Hydraulic Rams (5"-8" x1" bore) I have built them 100's of times in my mind you guys make it look so easy but I am sure there are very tight tolerances that need to be followed-yes? I bought a SB tool room Lathe a few years back and still trying to learn- I"ll give this project a try after all I can that is how one learns through trail AND mostly ERRORS!!! Failures!! Thanks for the video!

This was a great project. Great workmanship here.
However,u missed to show us how you have connected the cylinder to the air pump,my biggest concern is how you connected the lever that when u shift it one direction, it moves the cylinder arm forward and vice versa. What gadget is that by the way( at minute 6:12 and 6:19)? Do let me know. Thanks alot for sharing this project

As this project has a persific mounting Flange, it's built to fit another project. This is a good build but too hard for me. Can't wait for the other half of this project.
