i love watching roger he reminds me to my old buddy that has passed away because of cancer, you just look like him and the way you talk just like him it feels nostalgic i miss fishing with him again maybe in the next life cheers
gday roger, i've recently picked up slidebaiting myself and heres a few pointers i have picked up along the way 1. it is advisable to have a 0.5-0.6mm nylon topshot/mainline on your reel, with 0.55 -0.6 generally being the preferred as it provides a good casting distance to strength ratio. even large sharks can be landed on 0.6mm nylon which equates to roughly 50-60lb. generally the common line setup is 300-500m of 50lb braid attached to 100-200m of 50lb nylon topshot 2. you MUST have a 6+ ounce grapnel sinker, this is a key component of the whole rig and without it your slide will not work properly. 3. after attaching your slide to your line, pull the line from your first guide down about 50cm very quickly a number of times until your slide is fully underwater, then move the rod tip up and down from 12 to 3 at least 100 times. this can be pretty hard on the body so theres a few different methods too it. 4. overhead reels work better as they can cast large topshots and wind on leaders much further then spin reels, if you're willing to learn and want to remain shimano loyal, the size 30 torium is an excellent reel for this and holds 500m of 50lb braid + 150-200m of 50lb nylon without too much of a worry, as well as being quite easy to control. the 40 and 50 reels are much larger but theyre hugely impractical for even the largest of mulloway and even above average size sharks. There is other similarly suitable reels from other brands, such as 50 size daiwa overheads (saltiga SD, saltist SD, saltist BG, Seagate, Sealine), Avet LX raptor MC's (mc meaning magnetically controlled/magic cast), Fin-Nor lethal 30sd (very good budget option, very similar in size to a 30 size shimano), and lastly the reel i have, the Okuma cortez 12csa (good budget option with magnetic brakes, can be found on amazon for 216 dollars which is what i got mine for, very easily to control but borderlining too slow to get good distance out of, needs degreasing and i have also found the line capacity to be lower then what was stated on the box) deep spool 651c5 and 651e5 size alveys are also suitable and have accounted for some very large spanish mackerel and GT up at fraser island. 5. Low mount rods cast further and make for less tiring fights as the reel is closer to you and lower down the rod allowing for more leverage when casting and fighting the fish as well as allowing more of the blank to load up when casting, however thats not to say some very far casts can be made with high mount rods. Some good rods that can be bought off the shelf is the poseidon coastline 13'6 heavy, assasin beachmaster zero cast 14M, shimano tcurve slidebait 24KG OH (all these rods have counterparts suited to spin reels too) You could also have a rod custom built if that pleases you however the cost of a good sliding rod blank tallies up quick considering the best blank options generally have to be imported. you could go with a 8 or 9 wrap fiberglass blank such as a 9177 or 8177 but i'd advise against it because those heavy mongrel broomsticks of rods just suck out your will to live after a long session of use. This summer i will be doing a roadtrip from where i live on the gold coast in QLD down to southern victoria to see the 12 apostles and some family and friends. When i am on the south coast of nsw, I would love to stop in wherever suits you to meet up for a slidebait session to try to get onto some biggens off the beach. cheers, chuck
I've always loved your content Roger. Old school fishing and you always respect the fish that you aren't eating. A good way to keep livies is to use 2 buckets inside each other. The top bucket I drill a heap of 8mm holes in the wall and base. Then you just pull the top bucket out with your livies and refill your bottom bucket. You can also keep livies just in the top bucket in still water with a lid. ✌️
Did plenty of slide baiting. 1. Grapnel is a must as it provides a good solid anchor to allow a taught line so slide can slide )) 2. Need at least a 12-foot plus rod so the tip is high enough to provide the elevation. 3.Need to flick the tip up and down which causes the slide to move down the line...many many times. 4. Hold on when that bite comes...
Slide baiting is quite big in South Africa. My biggest Mulloway (Dusky Cob) and Blue Fish (Shad) both caught on sliding live bait. Some tips for you: 1) Cast a grapnel hook out and leave it for a couple of minutes to dig in. 2) Study the different techniques of hooking your live bait. There are better ways to keep bait alive for longer. 3) For larger live baits you can easily use 6 or 7 ounce grapnel hooks. 4) Learn how to wiggle your rod tip to get the bait behind the backline quicker. Rule of thumb is at least 100 flicks with the rod tip. This works well to move non return sinker forward. Enjoy!!!
Hi Rodger, your stop ring needs to be the other way around, the swivel is attached to your mainline so when the slide reaches the ring it rests against the swivel.
Hu Riger I haven't had much success with slide bates but have watched some nice fish caught using sliding. What I noticed the guys were doing was the continuously pull rod up and down for about 10 minutes which ensures the slide has gone out as far as possible. Hope this helps
I would suggest when using the large live bait Roger use the weights with the wire on them. Back in the old days when I lived in the UK we always used Breakaway lead weights. I'm not sure if you can buy them over here in Australia but I did notice that Temu sell them in different sizes. The advantage of the design is that they have beads on the wire that clip into a channel on the lead. Once a big fish hits the bait or when you reel in the beads pop out of the channels and drop behind the weight meaning that the weight comes in as a normal weight without wires. The main advantage is that the live bait won't spring the beads meaning that the fish sends out distress signals because it has reached a stationary position and cannot swim too freely.
Hi roger I have found the best position for the hook is under the chin it’s able to carry the hook with out impending it’s ability to swim this also helps in a better hook up when the fish swallows the bait head first
Hi I love your show it’s really good . I have been slide fishing since 10 years now the right way to do it you have to tight your main line to the small swivel and the hook line to the big swivel circle and remember your trace line with the hook not supposed to be longer then 250mm in l long and you need the grabs null sinker not only to keep your line in position it’s keep your bait swinging down on a tight line . Good luck and I do really learn a lot from your videos
Hi Roger. In S.A I use large live baits for mulloway and 10/0 hooks. Steven Cooper recommended using large baits in his books, they certainly have worked for me over the last 50 years.🤗 Cheers
Hello John, what sort of areas are good for mully's in S.A? i would imagine the local beaches are all empty such as semaphore. where do you find fish? Thanks.
Hi, thanks for asking. Most of our beaches are too shallow, I always look for deep water and berley with pilchard cubes when live baiting. My top spots are Port Adelaide, Outer Harbour Southern rock wall, Port Elliot and The Murry mouth. The key at the Murry mouth is to use bait not lures, find a good gutter and use big live mullet. 🤗 Cheers
You would have achieved a much further cast with a grapple sinker from my experience anyways, and I use a lighter leader from the ring to the sinker just as a breakaway incase of a snag but more for off the rocks as beach fishing would be less snaggy…. Great content though 👍
Thanks, really looking forward to more of your chasing stonkers. Bait runners are a great way to get a bait out. I often bury burly blocks (but for rays being around) I never reposition, I never bring in a bait unless I think it died. I also run quick ties through the eye socket for my hook the baits do swim out faster. Awesome video really looking forward to more :) Ps that last salmon looked a good bait
Swear the salmon always turn and make a run for shore when released. Would be a funny experiment to try releasing them head to shore and see if it makes a difference.
Roger, I've got some video ideas for ya. One could be Beach fishing but strictly with lures (metal spoons/plastics etc), one could also be fishing a lake with strictly topwater lures, one could be fishing in lakes with beachworms, one could also be freshwater fishing for a change. The trout season just opened back up recently so maybe you could do another trout fishing video and you could maybe even do it with starlo. Just wanted to give you some ideas so you don't run out of videos to make 👍
I've slide-baited Roger, takes some discipline and right gear. Good fast tapered blank etc 13fters or even 14fters work well.....my last slide bait session tossed out a big tailor, turned my back to grab something from my bag, and when I turned my back my rod was nearly sliding down the beach lol (the wrong type of 'slide baiting)...dropped the fish unfortunately, but it's extremely important to ensure the slided bait reaches the end of the clip....In my instance I didn't, and came back with around 20m of severely frayed mono line... basically the fish grabbed the live tailor and ran horizontal to the beach, and with the grapnel holding hard, and my Alvey drag (e model) locked fairly tight, the line friction played it's part (slide clip tearing against main line under pressure).......(Spiro)
Great to see you setting up for the big dogs on the beach, keep up the good work, new content and techniques. Sliding is a great technique to run big baits with good success. Shaping surf board foam into the squid 🦑 siphons with bait cotton works a treat. I've experimented bobby corking the rips and exhausts off the beach which is sometimes difficult but exciting and exhilarating using glow sticks. Tight lines. 👍
Very, very interesting, Roger. I was cheering for that mullet to get out there. They are an amazing fish and will stop on the line for hours. I've found that when they get excited it's not that they're scared of being eaten but telling the Mulloway "Hey, it's a trap, clear out".!!
With that size mullet I'd be using a 14ft rod, 40-50lb mono, same in leader and definitely a 5 ounce grapnel sinker. You can also help the mullet get out by lifting the rod up and down, that helps to push the live bait out.
From my live bait experience was not to cast into weed area ..next to it yes but not In it as the fish just evades the predator fish amongst the weed and can tangle you up, just my 2 cents worth on that , can’t wait to see you doing more live bait fishing Rodger , and you still got fish n your worm rods , bread and butter fish nothing wrong with that .👍
You can get stung holding stingrays that way, it's exactly how i was stung while beach fishing, i still haven't touched one in 15 years, The pain is very intense and lasts for hours.
Also roger try n use beads before knots bcoz wen u will hook up a big fish the slider rig will rub against the bottom ring very hard n u will lose the fish pls Rgds Pompeii
