Something that wasn’t really touched on here that I think is super evident especially through his gt sport and gt7 videos is how detail oriented he is. You’ll see him always review his races and look at what he’s doing wrong compared to the top guys to gain lap time. It’s a almost methodical and cerebral approach to race prep. But not only does he do the prep he’s able to implement those observations fairly quickly and modify techniques to best match his driving style, car selection, and course he’s racing on

I remember watching Steve what seems like only a couple of years ago (but probably way more) when he was still using a controller. I always thought he looked a little economical how he drove, whereas I still use a controller, but use the mega-tap method for steering rather than literally steering with the thumbstick, which was just too small for me to match a RL wheel. But anyway clearly he had the right idea, and levelled up massively when he started using a wheel 🙂

That's not a deep dive. He's way more calmer in situations which gives him a second more to maneuver. Race strategies is also one of his strong points. He has the knowledge that most people lack, and that's due to him being a natural. He's aggressive when needed, and defensive when he absolutely needs to defend. People are hungry for positions since it's a race, but Supergt races keeping the spirit of racing intact. No dirty business, not affected by greed.

i'm watching supergt videos a lot these days, because the way he drives is very good, the races are entertaining, and the video editing is qualitative. it is a well know idea to brake to tighten the turn, in motorcycles this is also a thing, where we use the front brake to slow the bike, then the rear to get it to tighten the turn, and we adjust with throttle to widen the turn. there is also something i do in granturismo or forza is to brake at high speed, you feel the car more eager to turn in, and it makes sense because you shift the weight to the front thus giving it more grip.

You know how I learned weight transfer? Driving a G20 Cargo Van on the Tail of the Dragon so fast that motorcycle riders were having trouble keeping up. They pulled over with me and wanted to know what I did to make that Van drive like a Porsche 911! I told them about the engine being built for a late modal dirt racecar and how the stiff chaise with a low center of gravity made for something I had full control of and could put it where I needed to make it grip. My last run on the dragon was in a 2000 Grand Marquis (a boat of a car I called the "Uss Ragnar") and I had to use the brake and throttle to make the turns just as much as the wheel! (I could have been one of the best but I was born broken and never had the chance to go pro even after showing my skills. I'm told "if you were meant to be a great racing driver, you wouldn't have been born with a back as curved as a back road"... that and I don't have a way to earn money and you can't play unless you pay)

  • @sepg5084

Braking inside a turn is called trail braking. You don't brake away all the speed that you need to reduce at the braking point by the corner entry, you bleed some of it mid corner during via trail braking. This results in higher cornering speeds.

That confidence of being so close the the front car bumper only works because he knows he's playing with good drivers. If you do that in a race with amateur, it's certain you will hit and push them out of the road. That's something that needs to be acknowledged

Using the break to rotate is something he also mentions constantly, I tried to replicate it but man your timing needs to be really precise, I am also a controller player on Forza and "only" got a Logitech DFGT for AC/ACC, so my throttle and brake control is really wonky,
What people also not use is coasting, many corners can be taken without braking, just lifting is enough, the steering input will remove more than enough speed, conserving speed is also one of the things that needs to be practised actively.
SuperGT is an insane driver, both in reality and Virtual.

  • @DrR1pper

Whilst it seems to help in many instances versus many other people, it is is actually a very slow tecnique still vs the top in esports and real life. Watch Max Verstappen. You will NEVER see him have an increasing brake input whilst trail braking. It is only decreasing. If it is having to increase, that is because the the driver is suffering from increasing understeer on entry, leading them to not being able to build up sufficient rotational momentum by the apex and that is because the car setup is too understeery alone with a too aggressive later braking driving style. You can also see this is the case because he is able to get away with the REALLY REALLY bad habit of thrashing his car around. This would not be so possible with a more oversteering setup (like how Max has his car set up) but the benefit of a more oversteery setup (positive front end biasing and more slidy on the rear) is you don't suffer understeer on the entry rotational momentum building up phase of corner and all the while doing this with a maximally flat car throughout the entire corner as possible, leading to a higher overall average grip in the car and thus higher speed carrying potential. This style is also Lando's too, as well as Leclerc. Super GT only looks fast because vs. many other late braking drivers, doing these little extra things he is doing, do in fact help BUT the overall driving style is fundamentally limited with a progression path that yields a car limit that is signficantly lower than the limit of the car driving the way Max, Lando and Leclerc do.

do they manipulate the brake balance at all? i feel as if though changing the brake balance is more for AWD cars as RWD already has tons more oversteering.
i’m going to learn how to rotate more with braking rather than with all throttle.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, he's essentially using the brakes to give him a small but very important bit of extra front-end downforce via inertia and gravity?

Real question 💯 Is this not a normal practice or "driver's etiquette" for sim drivers/drivers in general? 🤔 If a slower driver is directly on the racing line, you have three options: 1. Brake late and overtake on the outside; 2. Break early an undercut to the inside; or 3. If you have the speed or even if you don't, just wait for another corner and opportunity. 🧐 Have I been driving in a special way without knowing or something? 😏 Someone experienced in sim or IRL PLEASE elaborate

He's capitalizing on his extensive karting experience to push the limits of performance the cars are capable to achieve.

After starting in 2005 with my first own ps2 and Gran Turismo 4, not beeing able to even really understand what to do (10yrs old) and now seeing videos and drivers like that and fully understand what is happening and wondering how much i do automatically without really thinking about is kinda a funny feeling :D
Not that i am close to this level, on controller i got about 1,5-2,5s per one minute of track behind the fastest bois, but not enough consistancy to hold that for long times at once.
But all this movements in the fingers to let of the brake till middle of the corner, steering less to get the turning better, the weight transfer here an d there, man i don't even know all the things i do and did now thinking about them, it all just happens haha :D

i’ve been a A class driver in gt sport, so i guess im not fast like him or u, but i’ve driven pit bikes in real life for a while and I can suggest this one thing for when someone is faster then u: u gotta try to doing things he doesnt expect, just like u kinda “break check” him before every corner and try to make him lose his pace gettin his line breaking before he expect it, i’ve won many battles like that cause you can see that the other driver lose his patience, or even letting him be first for putting pressure. thats kinda how rossi won at laguna seca against stoner in 2008, despite being slower, and some people say that actually stoner went in the ground at last corner cause rossi breaked early not giving stoner space to stop…u can really learn from that race cheeky stuff that makes u a more fearsome driver
