Vaughn expects and wants him to open up to what he thinks about him being gay, and about some of the feelings he shared. I don’t think he realizes that Carl asking for more potatoes and potted meat plainly means that he has absolutely zero problems with him and his lifestyle. Genius scene.
It doesn’t demonstrate that he doesn’t have a problem with him or the lifestyle. It demonstrates that he is incapable of having a problem with him or his lifestyle.
Vaughn could have been discussing politics or taxes and Karl would have been just as disinterested because he was incapable of being interested.
@@memowilliam9889 I think Carl is a lot smarter and aware than people think. I just don’t think he’s dense or sheltered or incapable, despite his upbringing, placement, appearance, vocal stylings etc. A lot more to this man than meets the eye, which is what I believe this film’s primary theme is.

@@brightforwar3831 I agree with you. He did figure out what gay means to make the joke that he knows. I actually thought that fact that he heard a joke and memorized it and correctly brought it up in the conversation is evidence that he's having a lot more going through his head than french fries. He either doesn't want to share anything or his mind is working differently. Not to mention that he claimed in a different scene that he kind of knows a lot of the bible and that he doesn’t understands it all but he gets plenty. If I really have to reach I would guess that he knows being gay is "wrong" according to the bible but he gets the more important concept of forgiveness and that nobody is without sin so he should judge. He just decides not to comment on the gay part and focuses back on fries. This movie reminds me of the movie The Drop and Tom Hardie's character in some strange way.
@@memowilliam9889 I don't know... The comment at the end of the movie about Frank living in his own heart shows that Karl is well capable of analyzing and internalizing complex emotions. This scene does seem to demonstrate that he could care less about Vaughn's sexuality because the taters were more pressing issue than sitting at a table with a homosexual.
One of the finest movies ever made. I don't know why it didn't sweep the awards.
Probably didn't need it since it became legendary. A staple favorite in millions of households.
That year, I think, was really dominated by Shine, Fargo, & Jerry Maguire.

Sling blade did win the Oscar for best writing in 97 though. Personally, I think that’s the best award to win. I don’t care about the academy awards and the politics around it. It’s not my thing.
Best writing isn’t the last award handed out but I think it tops everything else. I’ve worked on a few projects and I have had this conversation a lot of times. My case for it is simple. Where does everything begin? A script. How do you attract investment? The script. When casting what is the foundation for reference? DA SCRIPT! You can go on for days about why scripts and writing is the foundation for any great piece of art.
At the end of the day I try to see the bigger picture. When we look back on great plays we don’t have a clue who was cast as Romeo, or who was cast as Juliet when Shakespeare was around. We remember the story though! That’s applicable to how great of a story BBT created with sling blade and I think that story will be remembered more than Jerry McGuire 😂
I’m so happy that John Ritter’s stellar acting talent was shown through in this great movie before he passed away.

Billy Bob Wrote and directed this movie. He wrote John Ritter's part WITH HIM IN MIND. They were very good friends way before this movie.
This is one of my favorite films and I didn't know that. You can see how people really came together around Thorton to make this movie. So many artists. So. Good.

I think he must've had a similar relationship with JT Walsh, the guy who plays that rapist/murderer who's talking to Carl at the beginning of the movie. It's a relatively small scene, but the way he tells that story and the way he revels in making Carl uncomfortable is just absolutely brilliant, it feels so real.

Film's a real gem. Sling Blade is one I can watch again every few years. The pacing, the characters, the tone, and the magnificent Karl Childers. Watch it when I gotta tote the warsh summawheres.

But I was much more familiar with John Ritter when I first saw this, and I didn't even know it was him. A well known face being able to inhabit a character so completely that they disappear is, I think, the highest measure of an actor.
Brando, Guinness, Muni, Oldman caliber acting. I'm not putting Ritter alongside them, but he certainly played in the same ballpark when he gave this performance

I disagree. What Carl was thinking about shows that he doesn't care that Vaughn is gay. He knows Vaughn is good and that's enough for him. He verifies this near the end of the film.

I remember seeing an interview where Billy Bob Thornton said that an older relative of his, perhaps an aunt or grandmother, would call mental institutions the "nervous hospital" so as to be delicate. That is where Thornton came up with that term for the movie.

the subtle grace of every scene in this film is stunning. It's a perfect movie.
It has lots of obscenities, but they are necessary for the story it tells IMO.

What a brilliant movie. Profoundly underrated
Amazing movie! So authentic! It has everything (tragedy, joy, love, hate, fear, tension) and it delivers the goods along a perfect linear pace, as we better understand Karl a liitle more in every new scene. Karl never changes, we change. The audience evolves to truly see and understand him on his journey. Little do we realize, WE are on the journey.
In my opinion this film belongs in the AFI top ten, or at least top 20, list. To top it off, the soundtrack is gorgeous.
The setting is a "quiet" little rural town/community in the South. And, yet, so much lies just beneath the spectacle of this hometown -- A little boy lost his father, and is searching for happiness once again; A desperate mother clings to the safe edge of her sanity amid perpetual poverty and distant dreams; An angry, self-centered want-to-be loser is flailing in insecurity and rage. A gay man lives a half-lived life, day-to-day behind enemy lines.
And only Karl, only he, has the inner peace to live in the moment and accept his decisions. He is the quietest hero I ever met.

What is truly remarkable about this scene is the long takes with dialogue and emotion that seems so real. Certain takes last for nearly two minutes of dialogue by Ritter where neither he nor Thornton miss a beat.
The sad thing about this movie, the characters, the storyline-this happens in real life🥺I love this movie

This movie is the most introspective piece of art that bares the humane emotional range of love and at the same time blurs what is the meaning of civility. The timing between Ritter and Thornton is Artful.
I’ve never seen this movie but this scene, and especially Ritter, is very impressive. I had no idea Ritter could do a scene like this… super!

This is one of those scenes that are definitely used in film schools for sure. Simple but effective. "You some like a gentle, simple man. You seem like youre a thinker, tell me, what are you thinking right now" "I'm thinking taking more of these taters with me".

Everyone talks about Thornton's performance here, but I feel like John Ritter deserved just as much praise for his performance. Hard to believe this is the same guy who played goofball Jack from Three's Company.
This is one of my fav scenes along with the "french fried taters" scene and "I like how you think boy" scenes.

When I was nineteen, the year this movie came out, I had John Ritter's exact build, haircut and glasses. It's chilling.
This was apparently the first scene shot with these two and Ritter being Thornton's friend for years busted out laughing when he slipped into character and couldn't keep a straight face thinking he was just screwing around. Billy Bob had to convince him that that was indeed the character and he wasn't messing with him.
This movie is on my top 10 best list. Pure genius and great acting. So after I saw the movie, I tried mustard on French fries. I was surprised how good it was!
Mustard instead of ketchup. I never thought of that but tried it once. It was pretty good.

I've said it before, Billy Bob Thornton is a genius. I don't care how weird he is, absolute genius. What strikes me about this scene is that John Ritter just looks like John Ritter having a bad hair day. Billy Bob Thornton doesn't look anything like himself. He totally became the character. That's acting talent.

As I get older and rewatch this movie... I am amazed at the subtle, profound layers I completely missed when I was younger. This is a fantastic watch!

I grew up a few blocks from that hamburger joint. I sat with my cousin in that very booth and negotiated the deal to buy a motorcycle from him when I was 13 years old 🙂
This is one of the few times that a true Southern dialect has been portrayed on film. I can hear my elder relatives and local people that I grew up around. Billy Bob was from the same area, so it’s not surprising that he nailed it 👍
One of my all-time greatest movie scenes. What makes it so great is that Karl really does understand what he's talking about but he's uncomfortable having the conversation. So he deflects with unexpected humor...

Both Mr. Roper and Mr. Furley were both right all along!!!!!!!!!!!! I will never forgive myself for laughing at their presumptuousness, which I incorrectly assumed was completely futile at the time.
