I literally just watched every video in this build series in one sitting. Got a CX500C two days ago, so this series ROCKed to get some inspiration. Thanks for these awesome, detailed videos!
Congratulations on doing it right! Having the headlight go out when the starter turns over will save you from being stranded from a dead battery one day down the road. I need to do the exact same on my '82 gl1100 and instead of getting a used part, I think this would be a (more complex but ) much better way to go. Cheers from Montreal, Canada!
As parts dry up it's good to know that someone is taking up the mantle to make parts for these old gems. The cx500 was the basis for Honda's foray into flat tracking and literally tore up the field. Ricky Graham!
This was beyond helpful for my BMW K75 build, thanks for showing the troubleshooting you went through. I just bought the start/kill switch from Lossa as well as the relay kit... thanks a million. Subscribed!
A great show, you should be really proud of what you have achieved not only with the cx but also your professionalism and educational value in the videos. Much appreciated,Thank you. How about you do something with the clocks? Only a suggestion!!
Thank you so much for your videos on the Moto-Fugazi! Great work! I was struggling with the wiring on my CX500 in regards to the starter myself. It turns out I have a bad ground somewhere along the line, from the solenoid to wherever. All fixed now! Cant wait to see what you do to that twin star!
Idk if you're finished with the moto fugazi build or not, but I love it! It'd be cool to have a before and after video with some great shots of the bike. Can't wait for the new build!
@luke Daniel, I have spent my first evening of the year watching the whole playlist... That wasn't my initial intention but you have done a great job with the bike and most importantly, the videos that I had to see the whole restore through. Your comments were to the point and very inspiring. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I used to own a '78 CX-500. I really enjoyed your series...but the heat shrink was pretty boring. LOL On the other hand, I really enjoyed your engineering of the wire harness. When you were mounting the megaphone, I was wanting a strap to the seat bracket to support the phone. That's a lot of arm.
Very cool series! To my mind, I would lower the headlight so that the bottom of the lamp is aligned with the bottom of the tank... Also, the bulky speedos could go, and be replaced bay smaller ones Cheers!
Love your videos!! Just watched them all and subscribed. I would lower the headlight with new mounts and replace those bulky dials. I mean.. the whole front end would be better if it was lower, but i see you have a limitation with your suspension travel. Probably changing for another front end would do the trick. Either way.. Congratulations!! One of the best things about your videos are the low key tunes that are not twice as loud as your voice. Most videos of other people have such annoying music!!
So, I bought an Emgo kill switch and starter combo. It came with a 4 wire starter switch that caused a little smoking between the ears, because the cx has a 3 wire, but in the end it was a simple jump.
Dielectric grease works well to bring new life to old killswitches. Great videos man, I am wrenching my CX500s and have used these as a good reference and inspiration. One thing... what did you do with the crankcase vent hoses coming out of the back of the cylinder heads? Murray said to vent these to the carbs but I'm wondering what you did. Other thoughts: Compressed air to get on grips! Genius! Due diligence and writing out electric diagrams. Great example for the younger folk. I find myself staring at the diagram and getting frustrated half the time.
Luke, I know this is seven years old, but could you send me a clear picture of your final schematic? I am rewiring my Xr650r after I installed an electric starter on it. Thanks, Tony
See the solenoid has power its got that but needs a grounding out spot so once the mower isn't running the solenoid releases and blocks the gas flow there's no ignition wiring I'll think of some way so it wont keep having power to the solenoid when the engine is off. Wonder if a one way diode would work for when it is running properly not
Hey Luke! Great series. Can you please tell me what upper handlebar clamps you are using and tell me where you mounted the fuses from the stock upper clamp? Thanks!
Hi Mate. Like @Sam Armor, I've just spent an entire evening watching the series. Really informative and slightly humorous at times as well - Fantastic Job!!! I would like to ask though, are you going to look at tidying up the instrument binnacle above the headlight? For my eye at least it kind of looks as if it is spoiling the overall lines of the machine. I'm in no way telling you what to do btw, just a question.
Anyway you can send a little more info on how to do the wiring for the relay to cut the headlights off during start? I have a 79 CB750 and bought vintage Honda control that has a light on/off switch which I won’t be using. Any help appreciated, thank you
Alright dude, I found this very helpful until you skipped right over the part where you took the controls off. I'm having trouble getting the handlebar controls off of my cb-750 F very similar to yours. But I can't get enough slack on the throttle cables
Hi Luke! Lovely Video man. Actually I just wanted some help with the SPDT Relay Diagram. Can you please map the Relay Numbers like 85, 86,87 etc and to which cable have their terminals been connected to? I wanted to do this on my Royal Enfield Continental GT as my new HID kit keeps blowing fuses everytime I turn on the starter!
Do you remember how you wired this setup? I’m currently going through this same thing for a GL500, basically the same thing. I think this would work with my CB750F build as well. I screen shot the diagram but I’m wondering if you added any additional wiring or if it was just strictly the wires on the relay and new switch. Also you mentioned grounding to the frame, did you run the bl/w externally?
Hi do you by any chance remember what throttle cables you are running? I am having trouble routing my cx500c cables in a way that does not cause them to stick, i am using clubman bars like yours. Thanks!
Stock CX500 cables. You'll notice on the front shots in this video that I routed the cables behind the headlight. Also, I lubricated mine not too long ago, which helps with binding.
Tried this on my 92 cbr 600 and have had nothing but problems. The bikes battery only runs at 8 Amps which renders the relay part of this project useless for me. Got everything hooked up seemingly perfect but the relay won't activate. It's a 10a relay being used in this video and I didn't realize this at first unfortunately. So I tried hooking it up without the relay in line and now my bikes ignition fuse keeps blowing (melting) after it runs for a just few minutes. I'm kind of at a total loss honestly. I figured the bikes where so close in age and design that this would work, but unfortunately not for my bikes setup.
Hey man... The way you modified this switch/relay assembly.... Does not make sense to me. If the headlight comes on when the kill switch is off doesn't that mean the starter will turn over when the kill switch is in the "Off" position? Not the biggest deal but I could see that leading to those moments when you are turning the bike over and wondering why it will not fire.
The run/kill switch turns the ignition system on and off. The start button is supposed to disable the headlight when turning over the starter, this way it receives max output from the battery. Now that you mention it, I have had a moment or two when trying to start the bike with the ignition off. ha. Happens to everyone.
can you give me a link to the throttle control you used I recently got an aftermarket throttle control and the cables on my CX are different sizes and would not work with the throttle control I got
@lukejdaniel great build man! I am basically doing everything your doing. Finishing up the painting then buying the suspension/seat. Do you have an email? I am really going to need some help with the wiring harness. :/ cheers from Austin, Tx!!!
Could I do this with a Yamaha r1 switch? Seems to be the same thing as the aftermarket switch in the video, however there are 2 extra wires, not exactly sure what they do though. It is a 2007 Yamaha r1 right switch.
I don't like those types of switches they burn out to quick from to much current i was looking for a video of a off switch to a carburetor bowl solenoid I'll make one my way if i don't find no video if anyone else has ever made a off switch to the solenoid i don't have no wiring harness to cut my stuff into

Brilliant video and information. Watching this today, years later lol
I'd just like to say that I really enjoy watching this build series. It's very motivational for me as a new rider. You're doing an amazing job!

A great build! Nice setup with the video, sound, ligths and commentary. Enjoyed every episode. Greatings from Norway!

Great series, binge watched the whole CX500 build. Looking to buy one of my own and do something similar. Double thumbs up!

Not finished yet, I have been thinking about a before/after video.
Thanks, this plus your previous video is exactly what I need to do for my controls.
Glad I could help
I've had my CX 500 since 2012 and love what you did with the switch
Ty for all the videos, best series if seen so far. great work!
This video is definitely a wiring guide, which isn't a bad thing I guess that's this whole series.

Hi Luke, congratulations very very good job. greetings from Chile.
Thanks!
I had an '81 CX500 that I was completely in love with. Ugly and indestructible. It was stolen. Much sadness. More anger.
Doing nice work, there.
So, I bought an Emgo kill switch and starter combo. It came with a 4 wire starter switch that caused a little smoking between the ears, because the cx has a 3 wire, but in the end it was a simple jump.
Hey Luke, where did you end up grounding wire at the end? Looking to do this shortly on my cb750. Thanks

that was a terrific built my friend I have learn a lot and still at it building mine....what's new/next

I used a dpdt small switch in place of the aftermarket start switch on my right hand control.....fits in easy and takes 20mins. No need for relays.
Bro, can you please post a clearer wiring diagram for the SPDT relay mod?

Luke Daniel Thanks! I'll give that a go.
Can't wait to see and do with the old girl, did you not say that is for your wife? , happy new to you and family from sunny Scotland
It is!
how did you get that grip off so easily? is that a bike pump needle?
just got yourself a sub.

what did you do for the front brake light switch ?

Lossa Engineering.
@lukejdaniel great build man! I am basically doing everything your doing. Finishing up the painting then buying the suspension/seat. Do you have an email? I am really going to need some help with the wiring harness. :/ cheers from Austin, Tx!!!
PM me on youtube.
With you're new LED headlight, it is most likely not drawing enough power to worry about when engaging the starter motor......
