All of the Wizard of Oz references are intentional. Basically every character in RWBY is a reference to a character from a fairytale, book, mythology or something.

I think someone was able to build an extendable Crescent Rose before the show even premiered if I remember right.
Every Character is based off a different fairytale or historical myths.
Ruby is Red Riding Hood
Weiss is Snow White
Blake is Beauty & the Beast
Yang is Goldilocks & the 3 Bears
Glenda Goodwitch is based Glenda the Good Witch from Oz.
You missed his name so I won't tell you the Headmaster's name cause would give it away.

Ruby is also Dorothy Gale from The Wizard Of Oz because she has silver eyes and Dorothy had silver slippers instead of ruby ones in the book. Also Professor Ozpin is The Wizard.

There are actual RWBY video games. RWBY: Grimm Eclipse is a co-op hack-and-slash, and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle has several RWBY characters as fighters in a Fighting Game.
SMITE has RWBY skins of some of their regular characters.
They also announced a new video game is happening next year.
There's also the mobile game which, surprisingly, has more details on a lot of the characters and lore than the show itself.

blake's parents only became the chief and moved into that house five years ago, while she's never come home to live thta lifestyle, but they're easy to miss.
i love how naive they are to this. It's going to be so great. Rana is going to continue to flip. Such a low-key clever show
RWBY is pronounced as Ruby like the main character of the show Ruby Rose
actually not, they pronounce the team and show with the "w" in there, kinda like saying "rewby" instead of "ruby" which they pronounce the character like that, as "Ruhbi"

I said it in the last video, but I’ll say it again because I’m keen. Seeing how much you enjoy the music, i really believe that everyone (including you guys) would really enjoy a full soundtrack reaction with the lyric videos at the end of the volume. The songs are custom made for the show by Jeff Williams (Sung by his daughter Casey Lee Williams) and so the lyrics are all character relevant and add to the depth of the characters. (If not essential to understand them)
Suraj brought up Paramore, and I honestly did not make the connection until then. The sound and energy level is pretty comparable.
I feel the need t point out the fact that calling Rooster Teeth a UA-cam channel sells them short a little bit, since Rooster Teeth predates UA-cam.
I’m also laughing at them saying they “used to” make Red VS Blue. Wait until they find out they never stopped and season 18 comes out in less than a month.
A ton of characters in the show are references to various fairy tales and fantasy characters. Some are more obvious than others.
What got me into RWBY and why I was hooked by the first episode was the worldbuilding and the characters. Within ten minutes I was already invested in who these characters were and their stories. The dialogue is quick and snappy and feels like real conversation, the humor and charm is on point. Animation is not their strong suit in the first season (entirely due to the limited budget and software they had to work with) but it is still incredibly impressive what they did with what they had to work with. Monty was a genius and the world is a darker place without him - I'm so glad RT decided to continue the show in his honor.
Kendall Brandenburg perfectly said....the real life dialogue makes this show everything.
The Patreon fans got good taste. You guys should check out Red vs Blue and Dead Fantasy for more great animation and action choreography from Monty Oum if you like this Monty masterpiece. Suraj and Damarin also caught a lot of the allusions, symbolisms and themes.

Ruby Rose - Little Red Riding Hood (Wears a red hood, is first seen fighting wolves, and is called Red by Torchwick.)
Weiss Schnee - Snow White (Her name means white snow, her leitmotif song is called mirror mirror, and her necklace has an apple on it.)
Blake Belladonna - Belle from Beauty and the Beast (Though in this case Blake is the beauty and the beast. Her last name contains Bell, she loves reading, and own a candelabra)
Yang Xaio Long - Goldilocks (In her trailer she fights Junior, based off of baby bear, and a DJ wearing a bear mask. Yang first fights bear grimm. And she’s protective of her hair)

@@godfatherplayz5294 What he means is that in volume 1, the two-part episodes are meant to be watched as one episode, they were just split because the animation team needed to buy time to finish the season. After volume 1 it was never an issue, but early on there were some struggles.
Soooo glad you guys are watching this. I love this show. The weapons and the choreography gets so creative. One of the few shows that actually use momentum often
You learn real quick...the music is EVERYTHING!!!!!! Simply the greatest original soundtrack to an American animated series (Over Avatar due to vocals) My top 3 RWBY, ThunderCats (the REAL ThunderCats) and ATLA
i love how into it rana is. also in case nobody has mentioned it yet, every single character (other than spoilers) name is a reference to a color in some way, but on top of that a lot of characters (at least most of the main characters) are also references to fairytales or pop culture.
And honestly [spoilers] name is too, in a way.
Yeah when you see the older/more experienced students and adults fight, it gets you hyped for what Ruby and crew can turn into.

I am extremely excited for this. RWBY is such a fun, fun, fun show. And if you like character growth then you'll love this. There are such unique characters in this with great chemistry. The graphics for the first few seasons is a bit rough, but once they get the budget it improves by leaps and bounds. This really is such a great show and I'm glad we get reactions to it now.

So, if it hasn't been made clear yet by other fans, RWBY's characters are all based on characters of myth and story.
The Wizard of Oz, Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, Cinderella, and so on.
Of course, they have their own RoosterTeeth spin.
Edit: Also, the " is this an anime" discussion ended when Japan called up and asked to make a manga for RWBY. Which they did, of course.

Fortunately it sounds like they're like half a season ahead. Doesn't stop the people who think they're super clever and funny, but it does help with the "I can't wait for the BIG THING IN NEXT FEW EPISODES" people.
It doesn't help that a lot of people think that they're far more clever than they are. You know, the type who make an "inside joke" about future events that they think is just a sly wink to other people who have already seen it, but it's actually glaringly obvious what they're implying even to people who haven't gotten that far in. And heaven help you if you happen to ask a rhetorical question or just speculate out loud during your reaction, because some people honestly don't seem to understand that they don't absolutely have to answer or "correct" you.
Granted that's not a RWBY thing, it's just something you can find in pretty much any fandom when someone new is reacting to a series.

dont mind the animation, this was Roosterteeths first fully animated project, the animation greatly improves each season.
Here's some advice: Any episode that says part 1 or part 2, watch them together. Otherwise, Vol. 1 will take forever. Don't get me wrong, I like RWBY. But, it didn't really become one of my favorite shows until Vol. 2.

I'm happy to see you reacting to this. I hope you like it. RWBY had two virtuosos working on it in the beginning. Monty Oum, the creator, was a genius in animated fight choreography and Jeff Williams who creates the music. Jeff also brought along his daughter Casey who sings almost all of the songs. Unfortunately Monty died after the second volume but we still have Jeff and Casey putting out great songs and giving us new insights into the characters and story. There are 7 OSTs now and all of them are worth listening to (and reacting to *hint* they make a nice break between volumes *hint*).
I been watching this series for so long.. I'm so thrilled to see you guys become new RWBY fans.

The reason it's so good because Volume 1,2&3 are made by Monty Oum. After he died RWBY really changed. Other Volume it's not the same vibes as Volume 1,2&3.
that's individual tastes, and there's nothing wrong with liking it after that point though. I respect that you feel it isn;t the same but they are trying to make it work.

Normally not my cup of tea and the impressive animation was an acquired taste. But it grew on me and the 3rd volume blew me away!
Rooster Teeth is actually a full blown studio now, they've released at least 3 feature length films along with this show, and several other shows, and Rana will be happy to know there is a 4-player co-op video game out for the series called Rwby: Grimm Eclipse
and YES! that is indeed the voice of Jen Taylor who plays Cortana in the Halo series
Ruby is basically jumping from being a High School Junior to a College Freshman thanks to Ozpin.

They should really talk about the fighting! Yeah Ruby was badass, but you can really tell she was outmatched and useless when Glynda was fighting. Can’t wait to see your guys catch onto these little hints.

as someone caught up on RWBY wow this show has come a long way
While I love the show, I will let you know that you will miss a LOT if you don't pay close attention. It also isn't the same as other anime. The fight scene wasn't a big part of the budget, this show was originally just a side project worked on from just a few different animators working with Monty.
The main things to know people have posted, such as each character is based on a fairy tale character or pop culture reference. Such as Professor Ozpin is clearly based on the wizard of Oz, and Glenda Goodwitch, etc. A lot of small hints are built into the show, but like with HxH, if you don't pay attention you are gonna miss a lot of key things that make the show really good. Animation aside, cause this was done with basically zero budget at all compared to what other shows get now. Just try the RWBY fandom.
Also, there is a game that has a canon storyline too. It was a fan project that Rooster Teeth eventually took over.
Also, Monty created the main characters RWBY, and each of their voice actors are co-workers from the company that he based their personalities on.
Couple of things to know regarding the reactions:
You should react to the chapters that have Part 1 & 2 at the end of the title as one episode (Chapters 2 & 3 are one such pair). They are literally one chapter that was split into two parts because of budget constraints so it’s why you see some super short chapters in V1.
When you finish with a volume, a lot of reactors like to react to the soundtrack for that volume. Don’t do it BEFORE you finish the volume completely, though.
You’re talking over dialogue a lot: I’m worried you’re missing important information already. You might want to go through the chapter again on your own to make sure you catch everything.
Also, don’t turn off the chapters until the credits are over, PARTICULARLY the last chapter of any volume. We have Marvel stuff going on in this show.

Now, regarding the first chapter:
I’m impressed you picked up on Torchwick’s inspiration because that’s exactly who he’s based on. Full disclosure, every character in this show is inspired by another story. For example, Ruby, obviously, is Little Red Riding Hood.
The world’s name is Remnant.
Yup, that mysterious narrator is indeed the voice actress for Cortana.
Ruby’s sister is named Yang, in case you forgot.
RWBY is indeed an anime. The animation doesn’t degrade; it gets better. The first season was mostly animated by Monty and I’m not sure if he had one other person or not helping him. But yes, they had limited resources. And you are saying the show name correctly when you pronounce it “Ruby.”
WATCH OUT FOR SPOILERS!!! There are seven volumes of this out and people know a lot. Be careful of comments and don’t dig around too much.
They should also definitely check out the "World of Remnant" videos for more world building and understanding of the concepts introduced in the show
Jean-François Héon at the appropriate time. They can’t watch those too early as spoilers are contained. I was trying to give them a road map for Volume 1. 🙂
@@StarcraftSquall yes, of course. All of them came out at a specific time. Someone should give them a sheet with the right order in which they should watch them. On my first watch, I'd go with release dates, as it was seen originally

@@StarcraftSquall yeah, it could work. Tho maybe batches would be too much information at once, or maybe not. But there is also one in V3 that yes, without context doesn't spoil things, but it does serve more as addition to a concept that is introduced naturally in the episodes (and we know how major that concept is in the series)
Suraj what you said about the animation dropping after Monty Oum passes is not true the only thing that drops in quality after Monty passed was the fighting it went from S tier to A tier and it was S tier not because of the animation the animation really doesn't change it's the creativity and Imagination that Monty had for those scenes that took a hit in terms of quality everything else is pretty much stays the same

Funny you talk about the cosplay. Monty designed all the characters specifically so they could be cosplayed. Even with the characters that have skirts and stuff, he added pouches so that cosplayers could store phones and stuff
Let´s hope they also listen to the soundtrack later on! And the hype is real, looking forward to episode 8

Well... Only for the first three volumes, sadly. RIP Mr Oum, your work will be missed.
Edit: and your attitude (shouldn’t focus solely on his work after all). From what I saw, he was a nice guy with lots of passion for what he did.
Monty Oum is the only redeeming thing about RWBY. His fight sequences were creative and fun (as a fan from Dead Fantasy). However, his story telling was never about anything else other than getting to the next fancy fight sequence and it really shows. Especially without him, when the team tries to cobble together some kind of coherent plot when there wasn't one to begin with. The whole show falls to shit because the writing never existed and without Monty the fights weren't even noteworthy.
SailorFuzz yeah, RWBY is an exercise in what not to do as a writer (with some exceptions, as there are a few legit good scenes in the show; it’s too bad they’re few and far between), not that Monty made it easy on them by basically coming up with fight scenes and asking them to fit those somewhere in the story. People can like RWBY, it’s their right, but it really annoys me when fans claim it has a good story and deep characters
Got into Rwby cause of the action. The story is only a minor plus for me.

Yeah might want to watch multiple episodes at a time because of how short they are in the first two volumes, but if that's not your style that's fine. It's a good show with great music!

Fact 1: The narrator at the beginning is voiced by Jen Taylor, who is best known for voicing the character Cortana, as well as the scientist she was created from, Catherine Halsey, in the Halo games.
Fact 2: At 4:46, The Fourth Doctor's scarf from Doctor Who is visible in the background hanging from a clothesline.
Fact 3: The magazine Ruby reads before Roman's robbery is focused on weapons, and the back has the Schnee Dust Company's snowflake symbol with the words "The finest of them all" above it, referencing Weiss Schnee and her allusion to Snow White, the "fairest of them all".
Fact 4: The henchmen in this episode are voiced by two children from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, William Lopez and Isaiah Torres.
Fact 5: In the Dust shop, one of the magazines behind Ruby has a cover showing an entirely-white humanoid figure with a wide grin and is titled "Truth". This is a reference to Fullmetal Alchemist.
Fact 6: The Dust canisters in the Dust shop are based on a wine opener owned by Miles Luna (one of the show writers).
Fact 7: The line "Oh, that's my Uncle!" while Ruby's mouth is full of cookies is a reference to the Rooster Teeth Podcast, in which Burnie Burns said "That's my uncle!" when doing an impression of Japanese media. The line evolved into an internet meme of sorts afterward, also becoming the basis for an episode of Rooster Teeth Animated Adventures parodying anime.

Lol no, American cartoons have been dubbed into Japanese for years. Disney cartoons, South Park, Powerpuff Girls, Rick and Morty, etc
nangke but the Japanese call it an anime. By famous voice actors and actresses from big anime’s. That’s what’s different then those you listed. Giving it full promotions, then asking RT if they could make a manga for them. When I was into it a few years back they were doing big things in Japan with RWBY

There is a videogame, it is called RWBY: Grimm Eclipse. A hack and slash game, with a story mode and survival modes. You can play with up to four players. Oh and I am so happy you guys are watching RWBY. I hope you guys are going to like it!

Yes, but the problem with Grimm Eclipse is that... it's mediocre at best. It's a play once, if you even manage to finish it, and never launch it again type of game. Luckily there's a new title in the works, being co-developed by Wayforward and Arc System - far more competent development team, actually looking forward to it
Great stuff! Volume 1 and 2 had some really short episodes (exceptions being first, midseason, and last episodes). I'd recommend reacting to at least 2 episodes for the shorter videos.

You guys are in for a wild ride. Unfortunately by season 4 the creator Monty Oum passed away. I hope you all enjoy this series that he left behind for everyone to enjoy.
The characters (most of them) are modeled after various folklores/fairytales/historical people. Some more obvious than others. You all will definitely want to watch the World of Remnant videos that go into the lore and world-building; they explain things like dust, semblance, aura, the kingdoms etc.

Just a side-note! Anime is simply the Japanese term for animation. Therefore, most Japanese consider this an anime, because it just is. The creators of RWBY were inspired by Japanese anime, so it’s both western-animation and anime. I hope this puts to rest any potential silly issues/arguments that have arisen elsewhere on this topic.
Monty was a true fan of classic sci-fi, late night Kung Fu movies, folk lore, and childrens stories. Yes, A ClockWork Orange, and Wizard of Oz are just a couple of references you'll see, and hear, not to mention the dark feelings of The Brothers Grimm stories vibe.
I know during dialog in animation shows tend to make you(reactors) all want to talk while the characters are talking..........
But with this show.......there's a ton of stuff mentioned that will later make you say....
"Wha????? I don't get it,.....What's going on....."
Yet it was mentioned earlier in a previous episode/chapter.
Be mindful when you all want to yap during non action scenes.
It's been the downfall of a few other reactors over the years.

enjoy the ride, and God bless Monty for spending so many hours bringing these first 2-1/2 volumes to the world.

They really ought to put on subtitles. RWBY has good subs and it would help with that.
Im so happy you guys are finally watching RWBY but heres a headsup and I will keep reminding you during V1 that when you reach the final episode of this volume or ANY volume, stay and watching the ENTIRE credits because they have a marvel thing where they show you a small clip at the end of the season. Cant wait to see you guys watch the next episode!
Ooo, new RWBY viewers. Glad to see people still watch the series. I won't spoil anything but I guarantee you'll like the series. There is some foreshadowing but you'll understand when you reach the other volumes. Enjoy the series. :)
RWBY is a tad bit methodical as far as their lines go. They've already said a few things that would be helpful to remember. Also they do have a video game.
Every important character in this show is based of characters for different legends stories and fairy tales. My favorite part was trying to figure them out
