Flash Flood Exposes Ruby and Sapphire Corundum / Propst Farm North Carolina Surface Collecting

- You rarely get the opportunity to surface collect corundum at Propst Farm. This was the first time not digging that I laid on the ground for hours and picked up corundum crystals ( ruby and sapphire ) that would fall through my screen and other diggers screens while sifting through the dirt. This was a pretty cool day. Maiden North Carolina had six and a half inches of rain and under 2 hours causing severe flash flooding. Waiting out the storm watching the radar knowing it would eventually move out and the day would clear. I was granted a once in a lifetime opportunity to surface collect after many dry months of digging. This video shows that experience. Once the rain stopped the sun dried and heated things up fast bringing out a neat experience. It was a cicada hatch and you can hear the sounds of the Western North Carolina cicadas in this video. Make sure to like and subscribe to help me out with upcoming future videos. We will be doing a group dig soon at this location for subscribers.
Most specimens showing are part of the High Country Rock Collection

Are any of those facet grade or star sapphire?
I wouldn't consider any of them facet grade. People do facet them though. They do star but every stone is different it all about how it was formed. Corundum Ruby Sapphire from North Carolina is mostly all lapidary grade. There are a few stones that have that have been found towards the Franklin N.C. area that I would consider facet grade but extremely rare.
iam from India ,I have some stones how can I find its Ruby
Hey Graham, why not show your face at the beginning of the video where you say something like “Good morning folks, welcome to my video.” It’s nice when we see you along with the specimens. Nice video. Pretty nice rocks! 😃
It's a work in progress. Thank you for the tips I felt like people would rather of seen rocks than me lol.
Do you ever find any faceting grade at this location? Enjoyed the video!
Yes but not often. They can be found but most are lapadary grade and specimens.

There are a few ways to figure it out. The first would be to look at it with a black light to see if it is UV reactive. The next would be a streak test and look at the color using a porcelain tile and scratching the stone on it. I hope that helps a little bit not all rubies are in that hexagonal shape like the ones I find here.
Hlloo
So those are worth money?
Yes ma'am . Thats what keeps me in the woods or connected to nature.
That are all Ruby or Sapphire only difference is color. Ruby is red and all other colors are considered sapphire. My problem is I find them so beautiful and unique I have a hard time selling them and end up just appreciating them. They seem to find their own home somehow.
I’m kinda excited. We’ve been seeing this place and videos from different channels, so we booked this Saturday to see if we can poke around and get lucky.
I hope you enjoyed yourself. It is a challenge to dig. It's a lucky opportunity to have I hope it went well and good luck to you.
Looked up haw much corundum is worth. Golden - $200-400/carat. Purple - $200-500/carat. Yellow - $50-100/carat. Green - $50-80/carat.
It ranges so much on the quality of the stone and the cut. You lose so much stone when cutting and the ct. Value goes up.
@@HighCountryRocks I see
They are definitely a treasure when you find one but to get that higher and quality is the challenge. Yhey all cut into beautiful stones some better than others.
@@HighCountryRocks so cool. Wishing you luck finding a huge ruby.
@@stevenevangelist5221 I don't know id you have Instagram but if you do Follow HighCountryRocks one word and i gift some throughout the year.
New Subscribers! Love the specimens you find!
Thank you for becoming a subscriber. I am addicted to he N.C. minerals. Keep in touch maybe we can get into the ground together. So much more digging to come.
Video yang bagus
terima kasih
We're is this place?
Maiden N.C. You can find out more information on the Propst Farm Facebook page. It is reservation only.
New sub here. I live in NE Tennessee, Tricity area. WNC is an hour or so away. At least to Asheville. Were is it that you were rockhounding? The weather is a challenge but it's so much fun. Have you been to the Boone, NC mining area? Just started this journey a month or so ago. Take care and be careful. ✌
It's weird Boone is not on a very good mineralized seam. You really need to start looking into the Franklin or Yancey County, Mitchell County NC. That should set your venture off on the right footprint. Let me know if I can help you along the way thank you for subscribing.
What do you do with them.
Make jewelry out of them mostly cabochons. After extensive cleaning some will be displayed and private collections or museum displays. Occasionally I will sell a few to private collectors. At this point just collecting and cleaning and collecting as many as possible.

Well congratulations you have a hobby job that you enjoy and make some money on. That is definitely a good thing.
Right now I'm just addicted to unearthing the next crystal lol. I can't complain about that one bit. I feel like I'm going to be working with this material the rest of my life for the amount of time I put in the ground here.
Hi there...nice to see you on camera, ...I enjoyed your video. 🔥
Thank you for the feedback.
Very good
BUT IT HAS NO VALUE SO BIG DEAL.
Lol. Sell me yours.
Stop trolling 😂
Thank you teaching us. So cool.
Thank you for the comment. I'm glad you enjoyed that video it's such a special place and such unique stones for North Carolina.
I'm very new to rockhounding. I just got interested this year and I'm 49 years old. Lol! I have been screening at Mason Mountain Mine and Cowee Gift Shop. My best finds so far are a 1,034 carat ruby corundum, a 576 carat sapphire (black in appearance), and a 8.5 carat rhodolite garnet. I am dying to dig at Propst! I teach school and am thinking about going over Christmas break. Is it good digging at that time of year? I wonder about the hardness of the ground. I also dig almandine garnets at Little Pine Garnet Mine with great success, but corundum is my addiction. Thanks so much for your videos! Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Happy digging!!!
You can dig pretty much most of the year. You just don't want to go there when it's below freezing. The ground at Propst is extremely hard pretty much year-round except for a few weeks during the season changes. Propst is great it's definitely a a challenge getting used to finding the crystals without a water source to screen the dirt. I would recommend going with the group your first time just to kind of get the gist of things. I will be putting together a public dig here in the near future but let me know if you got any questions. It's a treasure but you work for them at Propst.
I love that Cowee Valley Corundum though.
HighCountryRocks I go as much as I can! It's 2 hours and 40 minutes from home in Claiborne County, Tennessee for me. I would be thrilled to attend a dig with you folks!!! I can't get any of my buddies to go! They think I'm crazy. I'm just crazy about rocks! Lol. Thank you so much for the reply and info. It's very much appreciated.
Well it's a great place for rockhounding. You will love it. Feel free to add me on Instagram (same name) if you need any additional information or want to dig together. I will announce a follower dig soon.
