  • Today was a special day.
This video is updating you on the current collecting areas at Propst Farm. You don't always have to dig to have success.
Propst Farm is such a challenging but also rewarding place to find corundum var. ruby or sapphire. The previous 24 hours after receiving heavy amounts of rain after a passing extreme weather low out of New Orleans and the south east. This strom produced a tornado in New Orleans a F-3 . Propst Farm being my favorite place to dig and I enjoy just escaping to the farm for the day. I have been helping the owner Ronald with some projects around the farm such as removing a 1940's barn and land clearing. These jobs will lead to new areas to explore to find corundum. Today I would not of normally went to Propst Farm to dig due to the clay being so saturated from the last 24 hours of hard steady rain. It is almost impossible to remove the clay from the crystal with red wet clay. Everything just clumps and sticks. We have been in a long dry spell and during that time there has been some successful digging done on the tailend of this winter. I couldn't help but to squat and crawl around check the most dug areas. This video shows how the corundum is always being missed. Everyone is hunting for the big one and missing all these little gemstones. The day just kept getting better has the clay began to dry. Finding some absolutely aesthetically incredible small to even a few heading to the bigger range. I seen some potential ruby and sapphire hitting my Hardie's bag today. It's really neat to see the flash of the sheen of the corundum crystals while surface collecting. I ended the day working with the Ronald clearing a new area to dig in the shade during the summer. Since I was plucking the crystals I had to keep filming.
The day ended and I didn't even get a chance to clean them only the one in the thumbnail.
So I am going to do a Part 2 and show a easy technique to cleaning these corundum ruby and sapphire crystals. North Carolina still rocking out the gemstone world.

I hope we can make it work out for you. I wish the conditions were better though. We only get a few good digging windows throughout the winter.

Everyone thinks you need to dig real deep to get them when they are attached to the roots. Sometimes the key is to slow down and have patience and let them come to you. Maybe we'll run into each other Thank you for your comment.

Brother, I used to dig there back in the '80s with my uncle. Back then you put $1 in a coffee can on the little old ladies back porch and that was for one day. I have dug holes there big enough to put a Chevrolet in with a screwdriver. Got 75 lb one day. The bulk of them or not Jewel quality. But what a wonderful time I have spent there. I slept in the hole one night. I've been there in the snow. My best piece weighed 13 and a half pounds. I love your videos. I live in cabarrus county beyond Charlotte. Would like to go again sometime. Good luck in all you do!

Thank you for sharing your memories. If you sleep in a hole at Propst you are a digger. I would love to see some of your favorites. So much good corundum has worked its way out of the ground from there and still thankfully.

Crystals preserve memories. Sometimes it's not all about the value or how much you pay it's the memory of how you obtained that specimen.

Join the Propst Farm Facebook page. The owner contact information is located on there. It is a reservation only dig . Summers are brutal so there is a lot less digging and the owner has to be around. So it is hit or miss. Spring and winter is the best the ground is soft. It is one of the most challenging digs in the summer .
