Hey Cole, my father and I were in the concrete business for over 40 years. We poured many bin pads for farmers over the years and this is an absolute botched job. Call a structural engineer immediately! Call your attorney immediately! Call your banker immediately! Empty the bin out completely to get the weight off the pad. Sadly for you and the Cornstar Family, you have some major headaches coming your way. Safety first and then unleash the attorneys. Someone is going to pay for a new bin and pad...and it's not you! Best of luck

It seems strange to me to have a giant cement circle pad but the legs of the hopper only contact it on the very outside edge. Is that normal? Seems like it would distribute weight on the pad improperly.

    Concreter from Australia,
Once you start getting elevation changes in the slab its over. Best to run the bin empty or very low and find a way to secure the bin or take it down. Especially since there has been major changes in the cracks and elevation of the slab in just over a day

I used to be a structural engineer for another bin manufacturer and half the time we were called out to inspect failing bins it was because of poor foundations. My recommendation would be that in order to prevent damage to your hopper & machinery don't use it until you can get that foundation shored up. If this is your first time using the hopper then some settling is expected, but those cracks expanding and going as deep as they are is definitely a structural problem.

Civil Engineer here. The foundation is in failure. Suspect a combination of engineering design as well as construction issues. I recall some of the concrete was poured in record hot weather - if provisions not made (ice in the mix for example), it could harden before it had a chance to cure and reach design strength. Also the concrete crew could have weakened the mix by adding water to increase workability - common problem. Look at the plans to see how deep thick that pad was and compare to the pad you struggled to remove from the old hopper bottom site - that will be quite telling. Also, I hope they took soil core samples before designing the foundations but I suspect that was missed as well. Foundations are the key to a successful project - the Millennium tower in San Francisco settled 18 inches on one corner and is at risk of toppling over, so sometimes even major design firms get it wrong.

I would have expected deep soil replacement with compacted hardcore and way more rebar in there, but the American code is different than Europe. I suspect all the slab foundations are compromised meaning a complete rebuild. The work was done after destructive weather, so local contractors would have been stretched, and some will sadly make shortcuts.

also the rebar reinforcement on this bin/pad should have been near the top of the slab, and is most likely at the bottom. But 18" to 24" sonotubes under each column extending below frost probably should have been the design. Hopefully not design build type deal

Most of the comments here are spot on. In addition, it wouldn't surprise me if that pad was designed (assuming they didn't just wing it) for a regular bin and not the point loads of a hopper bottom. I would also worry if the concrete moves enough, the legs on that bin will get out of plane and could fail. Kind of like the old soda can analogy..... if you push straight down on an empty soda can, it holds a surprising amount of weight, but as soon as you have any side loading, everything crumples and it's over.

I own a concrete restoration company. That slab has failed but its not a free floating slab, the only reason it's not lifting more is the rebar that ties it together. Definitely not safe to hold a load. Where are the samples tested by the lab? What was the psi at 28 days and 56 days? What was the spec on the plans. Yes concrete can develop spider cracks for multiple reasons. Let's say from not wetc reasons. Let's say from not wet curing properly. Those are surface cracks. What u have are structural cracking through the full depth of the slab. Anything over the thickness of your nail needs to be repaired. Think yours will need to be re-poured.

Have a concrete testing company come out and do a core to run a psi test on your concrete. A good testing company should also be able to give a design mix of the concrete. Looking at the vid, which may be deceptive, it looks like a high fly ash content and that will make your concrete weaker. Adding fly ash can help give a longer truck life and finishing time but it's not good for the end strength. Have it tested and good luck to you all!

    • @stang10189
      @stang10189 Рік тому +19

It should have been tested out of every truck and verified proper psi before putting a load on it, but yes he should have it core tested before demo for legal reasons. To prove the mix was bad, if it was. Could be other issues, not being thick enough, improper compaction on the soil.

Hey Cole, you need to empty that bin asap! I’m a journeyman millwright of 25 years, that concrete work is not good. I’d have to look back at your previous build videos, but if memory serves me, when your contractor was building those pads I was thinking there was not enough rebar matting in the footings/pads. Also, it’s very evident that the footings are not big enough for the loads imposed upon them. It really comes down to the psi of the concrete and it’s cure rate over time. Get in touch with a structural engineer for their expert analysis of the situation first. Then, contact your lawyer’s. I’m sorry you are going through this.

That man couldn’t build himself out of a flattened shoe box! My story ended up with him and his partner going out of business and I’m left with a mess. He hung my addition like a deck on my almost 100 year old house not sure how much longer the small addition will last. Left my house footing exposed, and it’s a water feature too! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m praying you get this fixed. Without piers the pad is 100% relying on its own integrity and the compaction of the base materials beneath it. No piers = the cracking you're seeing now. Should be a pier directly under each of the legs of that hopper bottom bin.

From the looks of it, I'd say it started with improper prep for the footings & the lack of enough rebar or perhaps it wasn't tied together right. For any additional bins you have added to this site, I'd add fiberglass to your concrete mix design. With the fiberglass & rebar it'll give you much stronger concrete pads which will help with any shifting due to settling.

I worked for utilities(power plants, large industrial equipment, Heavy rotating equipment, Lots of Concrete/Good and Bad) for 30+ years and my experience was trying to mitigate dumpster fire situations. 1. Recruit a Civil/Strutural Engineer to evaluate the current status and risk. 2. Develop a Bandaid plan to sure up things in order to make it through the winter, plan on that bin being out of service. If I remember correctly, the hopper bottom bin was an existing bin, I would try to save the bin if possible, the pad is a dumpster fire and will need to be redone from the subsoil up, insist on better reinforcement in the bin pad, insist on recompaction of the subsoil beneath the pad. 3. Have the bin removed from it's current location before it is damaged by the pad failure., 4. Take some comfort in knowing this should be resolved at someone else's expense, you have done nothing wrong. Don't wait to take action, luck favors the prepared. Finish your harvest, stay safe, things have a way of working out, Trust that God is at work and has a plan.

Every time Daddy Cornstar goes up top he's not only showing us stuff that's loose, but also the complete lack of a safe design in the catwalks. If he's climbing down a vertical ladder onto a lower platform then the handrail should be the height of the higher tier so if he were to slip or stumble there's no risk of him going clean over the rail.

I'm no expert but I have been in the construction concrete field for 40 years. Looking at what's going on with the concrete pad. I'm seeing that the concrete was poured on bare ground. Water is getting under the outside edges and with the weigh pushing down on the outside edge it's allowing the center to heave and crack in the center. It appears there is no reinforcement bar in the concrete. When you rebuild it. Dig the area out to a minimum of 12 inches or more in depth. Fill the hole with crushed stone and compact it. Build a grid out of #5 reinforcement bar creating squares that are 12 inches on center. The grid needs to be elevated so it's no sitting on the ground. The best way when you build the grid is to drive reinforcement bar pins into the ground and tie the grid to that. When you order the concrete yu want 4,000 lbs. 3/4 blended mix.

  • @andrewfikoski4097
    @andrewfikoski4097 Рік тому +85

My advice is you will need to have a core sample taken. Concrete should not crack like yours did in that short amount of time. 3 main reasons for concrete failure is number one. The foundation the pad sits on. If the pad and sub soil was not stabilized properly. Meaning the proper depth and fill. The fill should have been compacted in layers no more than a few inches at a time. If the base layer wasn't compacted correctly then once the concrete is poured and weight added then yes concrete will begin to fail. 2 reason for failure is not reinforcement was installed in concrete. Since your in a climate with heavy freeze thaw cycles the best reinforcement I have used is a combination of steal rebar and mesh with a fiber glass mesh concrete mix. Yes the steal is over kill with a fiber mesh mix. But for the longevity of the concrete and the extreme weight your placing on the pad its best. 3rd reason would be improper footing, thickness, along with improper mix was installed. Yes there is different mix of concrete for every project. Your stone size and slump will be different from say laying a sidewalk, to a roadway, to an in ground pool, to a driveway, to even pouring concrete walls for a house. Whom ever did your concrete and bin setup has gor sure caused you all more money and stress. The over head bin does have a possibility of failure as it's hard to know without an engineer report being completed if the slab will continue to fail or settle. However with the Iowa extreme weather from summer to winter once the moisture flows in the cracks and gets under the slab. Once the freeze thaw cycle begins the structure will become unsafe. This goes for your entire site. You may get lucky to finish harvest without failure. Hopefully things will work out with you guys soon. Unfortunately the whole site will need to be redone from the ground up. It is true concrete will crack...but it would be hairline cracks. Basically surface cracks. Cracks that go the entire depth and with lifting is a cause for concern. That type of movement you have is movement you would see over the course of say 10 years...not in a 36 hour period or less. It's a cause for concern. Be mindful around your site and keep the eyes and ears open. The good thing is when the thing gets settled a solid bin company has the ability to reuse many of your components and fix the ones that was put together wrong. The foundations for the entire site will need to be torn out and done over.

First of all COOPER Happy birthday and many happy returns dude!! Hope you had a good one!!
I almost want to say, call your attorney to get the papers ready for lost of harvest and fill it up, let it collapse and then make a bigger claim to the company who build this!
The company signed it off that it could take the weight, so if it collapses it is their fault IMO.
But from a guy who did roadwork and foundation work, those slabs are compromised and complete done for.. What i would do is get the go ahead from your attorney, let a company who does concrete restoration work come in for a second opinion maybe take a core sample and let it be tested. So you have an opinion from an outsider what to be done.
And i think it needs to be taken down and completely rebuild, plus if that slab is cracking, what are the other slabs doing???
I'm not convinced that they are free of cracks even if you can't see them, sometimes small cracks in the middle can already be developing. Pressure points and so on....
Something needs to be done, and fast! this is not a 3000 dollar backyard concrete slab..

Hey Cole! Love the videos! I just watched the recent video about asking about concrete! I work for a company here in Texas and we pour millions of square yards a year and the concerns you have are absolutely in the right! That concrete should not have cracked and it may be for a few reasons!
    1. It could be that they didn’t put the steel at the right spacing in the concrete which can cause a couple things. Too much steel and you will have a weak pad due to the fact that the concrete is binding to the steel but the spacing between is very small and is causing stress. Or they didn’t have enough steel which means it’s binding but the space between is causing weak points.
    2. They poured the concrete too wet which can cause some of the aggregate to settle out of the mix and gives you a weaker holding psi.
    3. The concrete company that batched the concrete cheated you on material. Which can cause you to have a bad batch and a weaker psi.

Words fail me to express my sadness about the mess the bins and steel are in. Your family deserves better and I hope you can get it sorted out quickly for everyones safety. Good luck, take care and God bless.

Happy Birthday 🎊 Cooper, have a great day. Sorry to see this on a new site, what I'm seeing it needs to be taken down and redone. Winter is coming up and the freezing and thawing will only make those cracks much worse than what you are seeing newt.

Need to look at the reinforcement design and at the foundation/geotechnical report..sounds like could be a settling issue. Was the pad (concrete placed on compacted fill or did footings go down to undisturbed soil? Was a geotechnical boring done in the area as part of the design?

Cole. Next to farming I worked in the tower Industry. Always get proofs of every batch of concrete. Is a small bucket they fill. Keep these out next to your site. When things like this happens you can get the proofs tested for the load rating and psi rating, that directly puts the Conractor and concrete company at risk and makes them not cut any corners or keeps then honest. Just some tips for the trade.

I showed this to my Uncle who is a engineer. He said that bid could easily come down even if it’s empty. He said the same as others have said, it was a bad mix and not enough rebar. He said the way the wind sounded in the video that he wouldn’t be surprised if it stays up for very much longer. I will be praying that this all works out and that everything is fixed soon.

      This bin site SCREAMS
catastrophy coming . If theyve had this much trouble in less than a year , they should demand a NEW BIN SITE AT THE CONTRACTORS EXPENSE , by a real contractor , not the folks that did the current one .
